Blown Away
I have been a Wordperfect user forever, I had it on the Atari platform and then I got the Mac version when I switched to Macintosh computers. I was pretty disappointed when Wordperfect dead-ended. I have been using 3.5e for the last little while, but the world has taken to Word and I, until now, refused to go along.
One major sticking point on changing from Wordperfect to Word was that Word could not jump from start of file to end without me having to use two hands. I had learned to hit either the "home" or "end" keys and Word bugged the hell out of me because I had to use the command key as well. A minor annoyance to most, but to me this was big!
I bought Office 2001 for Dummies and got no help. The best I got was to use icons for start and end. A bit of an improvement, but still not what my fingers and brain had become instinctively used to.
I have had the Missing Manual for Office 2001 for a day and I was able to assign the keyboard to do it my way: The Old WordPerfect Way!
Thank you all of you. This book paid for itself with that one tip.

I have been browsing the Missing Manual, and it is overwhelming - in a satisfying way. It has so much more than the average computer manual. Best of all, it explains it in sufficient detail that I can actually do what the authors are writing about without the usual frustration. In the past, it has been my experience, that most manuals were written by computer programmers for their buddies to read, or else were so basic as to be useless.
If you're using Office 2001 on the Mac, get the Missing Manual.

It's Worth the Money!
I picked up this book a couple of weeks back and I have to say that I love it enough that I am going to go back and pick up the OS 9 Missing Manual.
The book is well laid-out, it's clearly written, it's up to date (for now) and I found out enough info for Excel that made it worth the money to buy it.
The book is aimed at someone who is relatively familiar with the Mac operating system but not with Office 2001. It starts from the beginning but does not coddle you. I think it even goes so far as Excel macro programming but I have yet to go so far.
I used to be a computer bookstore manager(Toronto Computer Books) and I've seen a LOT of books in my time. This is one that I would actually pay for full price! :-)

Things I didn't know I could learn
This book exceeded my expectations. It is written in that clear way that helps you to understand processes that are after all, usually pretty hard to understand. The many sidebars of tips are especially helpful and reading it made me want to try out some of the new stuff mentioned.

Fun and Murder with the Tatum Twins
Bert and Nan are at it again, mixed up in murder and trying to earn a living. These twins make the mystery more interesting by being up to their noses in suspicion.

A charming read, a few good chuckles, and a killer stalked by the daring duo. What more could we ask? It's a good book for a relaxing evening.

Antiques are murder
When an unsavory antiques dealer is murder, Nan and Bert Tatum are question because of recent fights they've had with him. But when Bert's daughter Ellie is arrested for the murder after confessing, the twins dive head first into the case to find the real killer. Further complicating matters for Bert is her ex-husband. Jake wants back into her life and is using this case to drive a wedge between her and current boyfriend Hank, the detective assigned to the case and responsible for arresting Ellie.

This is the fourth book in the Tatum twin mystery series, which is still going strong. The characters have become so strong and familiar that I didn't have any trouble at all with the alternating narration. In fact, part of the fun of this book is seeing the personalities of the twins switch after Ellie is arrested. The plot is slow in a couple places, but over all flows very smoothly.

If you're already a fan of these twins, this book is for you. If you haven't meant them yet, start with the first, DOUBLE MURDER. You won't regret it at all.

A double delight!
This is an enjoyable cozy with an unforgettable cast of characters who will ingratiate themselves in to your heart and onto your keeper shelf. I realize there is nothing funny about murder but the way these two go about solving it you can't help but chuckle from time to time.

Bert and Nan Tatum, whose mother named after them after the Bobbsey twins, Nan and Beatrice, are soon to be forty, identical twins and a one of a kind sleuthing team. Their mysteries take place in Louisville Kentucky, home of Six Flags Over Kentucky Kingdom and the Gigantic Flea Market.

In this the third Nan and Bert mystery, the twins, against their better wishes, return to sleuthing in order to find out who killed a unsavory flea market booth owner. When this mystery hits too close to home Nan worries as she watches her genteel twin sister change before her very eyes. Bert's maternal instincts transform her from a kind, sensitive woman to a protective mother with an agenda, the agenda being, to keep her daughter Ellie out of prison and to catch the murderer who is making her family suffer.

The plot is strong and current; in fact the contemporary atmosphere is so up to date that even Monica Lewinsky gets a mention. The mystery is hard to solve and the authors exercise good timing when introducing the suspects. As the ladies sleuth, the reader is entertained by their identical yet individual personalities.

Mystery readers, especially cozy fans, if you haven't read a Nan and Bert Tatum Mystery you are in for a double treat.

Nice Introduction to a Relaxing, Spiritual Experience
It's a good book; an easy read. With a bit of background and set-up, Gefen quickly and easily gets the reader into the process. Yet even here - avoiding getting bogged-down in lots of dry, background material - there is a sense that the author had to work very hard to "puff" this to make a 170ish page book, when it would have been just as effective as a tightly-edited 20-page article. The lure and prestige of a book credit is obviously great. Nonetheless, I recommend it as an excellent way to learn and cope with our crazy, imperfect, in-need-of-repair world.

Excellent introduction to the meditation in a Jewish context
This is a great summary of and introduction to the practice of meditation directed at the jewish reader!! It points out, in several places, the areas where the Jewish approach to meditation differs from other practices of meditation, which are particularly helpful to someone who is familiar to meditation, but not familiar with how to incorporate meditation into an observant Jewish lifestyle.

It is not an exhaustive study of the topic, but it doesn't purport to be such. Very helpful to beginning meditators.

All aspects of meditation within a Judaic context
Discovering Jewish Meditation: Instruction & Guidance For Learning An Ancient Spiritual Practice in a "reader friendly" manual on all aspects of meditation within a Judaic context. Author Nan Gefen teaches her readers how to meditate on their own, thereby placing them on the path to a deeper, establishing and maintaining a more intimate connection with the Divine, and garnering insight about their own lives. Ideal for the novice, Discovering Jewish Meditation also has much to recommend it to those already embarked upon a program of meditative practice as a key element of their Jewish tradition, practice, and spirituality.

Mostly great cookies
A wealth of easy to follow recipes that don't need a lot of exotic ingredients. A few recipes were far more bland and boring than the author's over excited descriptions, but most produced great results with minimal effort. One more complicated recipe well worth the additional effort is the chocolate souffle brownies. When she says rich, she means rich.

Good book, great cookies, bad copy.
This book would have received five stars, except for the fact that mine was printed incorrectly and I must see about returning it for a good copy. One chapter is printed twice, and the duplicate eliminates one section entirely. Odd mistake, and one I've never seen before.

On to the content: Ms. Rosenberg's first book was excellent. This wasn't as good, but it was still much better than other cookie books out there. Why? Well, the recipies are easy to follow, fun to make, and good to eat. On making them the frustration level is nil. It is a refreshing book for cooks of all areas of expertise -- and a great volume to share with the kids. There are definetly some noteworthy treasures in here, worthy of becoming the stuff of family legend.

Like I said, great book. I look forward to getting a shiny new copy so I can see what I'm missing! ;)

Not as good as her first book but...
still good. The cookie recipes are easy to follow and the results are consistently delicious. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys making cookies.

Shallow Treatment of a Vital Subject
The people described in this book are true heroes, and their stories make me feel humbled and ashamed. But the book attempts to describe 50 different people. Each person gets 3-6 pages, and at least one of the pages is a photograph, leaving room for only a short, unsatisfying glimpse of each life story.

The flyleaf states that "'Speak Truth to Power' is accompanied by a major exhibition opening at The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., then traveling nationally." It almost appears that the story is secondary to the photographs--a pity.

Excellent, touching reading
I bought this book for the sole purpose of a class where I was required to do some outside reading. This book was on our recommended reading list. I read the entire book, only one story was required. It was astonishing how these people change the world. I was moved by these stories.

almost religious in its power
The stories and photographs are deeply moving profiles of several of the most courageous people in the world. There are few terms to describe the total power, since I turn to this work on many occasions to gain some inspiration.

For someone not immediately interested in the field of human rights, the work is probably not quite as affecting, as personal stories about those who are involved in human rights will be unlikely to move the unconcerned. "Speak Truth to Power" is essential sustenance for the converted.

Nan and Bert are at it again.
Bert is still trying to get back on her feet after her divorce. Living next door to her identical twin, Nan, she's currently working as a secretary for a nasty divorce lawyer, Stephanie. The only reason she hasn't quit in search of a better boss is that her Mom and Stephanie's Mom are good friends. But one morning, she goes into work to find that her boss has been shot. Having solved two previous murders (DOUBLE MURDER and DOUBLE EXPOSURE), Bert and Nan try to sift through the many people with grudges against Stephanie to find the killer. Meanwhile, Bert is feeling insecure about her relationship with her boyfriend, homicide detective Hank Goetzmann.

It's great to see the twins back in action. As always, they tackle their latest case with humor. However, this book was a bit slow compared to the others, which is why I'm only giving it four stars. It's enjoyable, but just not quite as good as the first two.

Froth for a Spring Afternoon
Some books are right for reading in front of a fire on a rainy day, some for under the covers on a winter night. And some are indulgences, made for the day you played hooky from work because it was the first spring day of the year and you wanted an afternoon on the deck in the sunshine. "Double Cross" is just such a book: it's light, funny, and well-plotted. It features identical twins who are opposites, mothers who are all too believable, a witchy murder victim who deserves what she got, a hint of feminism, and some decent writing--not the least of which is the technique of using a twin to tell the story in alternating voices. I got just what I wanted from this book: amusement, entertainment, and escape.

Great book in a wonderful series
The terrific twin authors give us lively, funny and very real twin protaganists: Nan and Bert. Alternating chapters give each twin's point of view. It is the skill of the authors that makes Nan and Bert each a distinctive character. In this third episode of their adventures, the twins find themselves embroiled in the murder of a tough divorce lawyer who had developed a unique way to make the ex-husband pay dearly for his freedom. I agree with the reader who recommended that you read them all. The first two are available in paperback. Wonderfully entertaining, these authors do it right.

Working Toward Enlightenment: The Cultivation of Practice

trying to read this is work
It never fails that no matter what book is reviewed under "customer reviews" you have people talking about how great it is. I bought this and couldn't even read it. I found it not only hard to read but almost incomprehensible. when it wasn't being incomprehensible it was boring.

He jumps around, citing endless obscure buddhist texts, and never really leading you towards anything you can even understand. I read about a quarter of this and gave up and learned absolutely nothing of any use from the eighty pages i did read (eighty LONG pages, might i add).

If you are his student, ok, you've probably heard enough of this that it makes sense. If you are a buddhist scholar, maybe you can figure out what he's talking about, droning on about these endless texts. Otherwise, good luck.

I'd save my money if I were you.

A Treasure Trove of Cultivation Teachings
I'll add my praise of Nan Huai-Chin to that of other reviewers. This is a treasure trove of cultivation information. It's full of specific, detailed information about the enlightenment path. I'm not a student of his, but Wow do I wish I was. Finally someone who can explain this most complicated of subjects with depth and clarity. What's more amazing is that if you are an actual cultivator then as your experience grows so does the value of Nan Huai-Chin's books. I'm not kidding, they are so rich with information that you'll exhaust yourself long before you ever begin to exhaust their depths.

At one point he said that if you can't find an enlightened teacher than this book, and its companion, will serve as one. This from a man who is not only recognized as an Enlightened Zen Master, but also as an Enlightened Esoteric Buddhist AND Taoist Master. If you're looking for the real dharma, this is it.

A clear beacon for the lost
If you are like me, that is, trying to make sense of what is means to be enlightened and how to get there (i.e., lost) this book will set you back on course. In a clear (and sometimes thankfully repetitive) prose, Master Nan hands you precise guidelines to continue the quest. I have never read ANYONE who has the depht and clarity of Master Nan's insights into the dharma. His description of the meditative realms (dhyanas) are so clear that you feel you can just walk in there!
Definitely the best book out there - enjoy!

The Inter-Faith Family Seder Book
Published in Spiral-bound by Heritage (01 March, 1998)
Author: Nan Meyer
Amazon base price: $12.50
Used price: $4.95
Average review score:

Finally, a need being served!
Nan Meyer is to be congratulated! She has written a Haggadah with which Jewish families can welcome their non-Jewish friends and relatives to the Seder table. But in the process she has produced a Seder book that many Jews who have lost touch with but wish to return to their culture will find inviting to use. The Inter-Faith Family Seder Book is not only entirely user-friendly, it also provides practical suggestions for preparation and conduction of the Seder, and it gives the Seder service in a step-by-step, easy to follow sequence. In an era where Jews are becoming increasingly assimilated into the population, through both intermarriage and simple acculturation, it's easy to lose touch with their heritage. Getting back in touch with it can be difficult. However, this Haggadah can ease the retunr. It is very comfortable to use. It is in no way intimidating, the Hebrew that is used appropriately is also used sparingly, but in ways that are familiar. It is as appropriate to the ex-patriot Jews who wish to return as it is to non-Jews. Nan Meyer has made an important social contribution with her Haggadah. I would love to see more publications of this nature.

The Title Says It All
THE INTER-FAITH FAMILY SEDER BOOK: How to Celebrate a Jewish Passover Supper with Christian In-Laws and Non-Jewish Friends by Nan Meyer (1998),says it all. This is a delightful, easy-to-use haggadah that while making the prayers, songs and ritual accessible and comprehensible to the non-Jew, does not fall into the trap of "Christianizing" the seder. It has such practicial pointers as suggesting white rather than purple grape juice for the children because purple stains, "and there may not be much time to get their holiday finery cleaned for Easter Sunday." Then there are sensitive interpretations, such as that for the ten plagues visited on the Egyptians: "When people do evil and bring suffering upon themselves ... (but) we cannot rejoice over their pain." Traditional songs like "Chad Gadya" are paired with universalist English (only the blessings are in Hebrew in this user-friendly ritual) paraphrase of "Eliyahu ha-Navi" set to the tune of "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing." This reviewer suggests you take advantage of this book for your family seders.

Great!
Must write to thank the author for this wonderful book. I never thought I would be able to be at a seder again after I married out of my faith. Imagine my astonishment when my Christian wife surprised me with a seder in my own home. My children could see what a happy party a seder is. The author has explained the do's and don'ts of a seder so that anyone can produce one. My children could have the fun of asking questions that have been asked for thousands of years. I could have the pride of answering them. Can't wait till my next Jewish friend marries a Christian so I can give them a set of these books as a wedding gift.

A fast read
A fast-paced thriller with a sci-fi edge. Interesting characters and a timely plot structure make this an enjoyable read.

Thy Brother's Reaper
This book definately kept me turning the pages and wanting to come back for more! I am an intense reader and it held my interest. It also has the groundwork for a sequel. Should make for a great movie!

Thy Brother's Reaper
What a rush! Turn a great writer's imagination loose and this is what happens, you get "Thy Brother's Reaper." I couldn't turn the pages fast enough with this brilliantly crafted thriller. Don't pick this book up if you have things to do, you won't be able to put it down! This author knows how to keep you captivated and beware--when you think you have it all figured out........ Try to imagine a world where your absolute existance depends on your "trusted" government and then think along the lines of "global catastrophe." Humans in diguise, innocent victims being mutilated, drinking water contaminated, religious freedom revoked, perfection-"the key to life"--you have to read this for yourself it won't be the same if I tell you. If your not a fan of this author, you will be now! Nan Hayes once again leaves me realing in the aftermath of yet another masterpiece.
