Great for the beginner
This is a great resource guide for the entire Southeast, listing agents, cd's, theatre groups, teachers, photographers, everyone! There is even information on how to start if you have no idea what to do! It doesn't tell you who accepts unsolicited headshots, so call first, but otherwise, a truly terrific resource book.

Interesting and instantly absorbing book
Sinclair Lewis takes a distasteful and controversial subject and spins one of his best books that I've read. The book examines the feminist / women's suffrage during the early 1900's through the 1930's by following Ann Vicker's life. He covers her experiences with: abortion, voting rights, marriage, sex rights, and divorce.

However, the primary focus of the book is on the cruel and primitive jail conditions at the time. Ann's call in life is to run a prison. Lewis unabashedly describes the gory details of the torture and living conditions that Ann finds through her first experiences.

The characters in the story, especially that of Ann Vickers, are clearly drawn out. However, I found some of the "innocent" criminals to be a little too fake. At times I felt like Lewis was trying to tell me that all people in jail didn't deserve to be there. However, Lewis does make some poignant observations about punishment and the politics involved with it.

Overall, a great book and I would recommend that all Lewis fans or those with a passing interest in feminism / women's suffrage or jail conditions in the early 1900's to read this book.

Atlantic Canada Handbook: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador

Though Slightly Flawed, Still My First Choice for Maritime C
Mark Morris has produced an extremely helpful travel guide on Atlantic Canada. This Moon Travel Handbook has a solid introduction section that covers the region's land, ecology, history, government, economy, climate etc.

Each Province is covered succinctly and Mark Morris' information and recommendations are helpful, but his restaurant comments could be more critically informative, ie. "the food is well prepared" (what the heck does that tell me?) or "the seating is smoothingly refined" (huh?). Also, because the publication date is 1999 (thus the information is pre '99) I found some restaurants and inns closed or sold. As a whole, accommodations prices have increased an average of 15% to 20%.

Maps are an essential and critically important aspect of any guide. The maps in this guide are easy to read but lack the user friendly aspect of locating the recommended restaurants and accommodations on the maps.

A area that has become as essential as address and phone numbers is email/web site addresses. A time and significant cost saver especially for up-to-date information and accommodation quotes and reservations. I am sure this will be addressed when the next edition comes out.

Though slightly flawed due to the date, lack of user friendly maps and absence of Internet information, this guide is still my first choice for Maritime Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador. You will not regret this purchase. Recommend 3.5 Stars

Ballad Review
In this portrayal of the famous ballad of Mu Lan ,or Fa Mulan as some call her, a story of a young woman who saves China is depicted. She puts her life in danger to protect the life of her father by taking his place in the draft. This very moving and heart warming poem is very well written and a must read if you are interested in the story at all. Its good to see the real work that the movie was based on...

Native American art projects
I have used this book with elementary students with nice results. The first few pages describe how the Northwest Coast Indians made, decorated and used wooden boxes. Then line-drawn patterns are given which can be colored, cut out, and pieced together like a puzzle. There is a Salmon Egg Paint recipe for making the same type of paint the Indians used. There are instructions for making a Bentwood Box out of heavy paper, which is then decorated. The design templates imitate well the art of the Northwest Indians, similar to that used on totem poles.

The Children of China, An Artist's Journey
I bought this book for my daughter who is Chinese. I use it as an educational and cultural tool of the country of her birth. The pictures are wonderful to enjoy as both an adult and child. My daughter is now two and we enjoy reading the captions to the pictures and as she gets older, I can read her the full text. It is a must have book for parents with children from China.

Choosing a Hometown in North Jersey
I found this book to be extremely helpful in learning the "nitty-gritty" about the various communities in Northern New Jersey which my wife and I were looking to move. For each town, the book lists out a brief history of the town, the quality of its schools, average income per household, ethnicity proportions and average property taxes (very important!). It saved a lot of time and energy to have one source for all my questions.

I am looking forward to obtaining a more recent edition for my personal library.

Urban delight
This book is the photographic equivalent to mythical eighties Dennis Cooper novel. Five American photographers, forerunners of their generation, each with a distinct style of his own yet sharing the same subject matters: urbanism, seperateness, violence, Aids, homosexuality, to name a few. These issues are dealt with through the use of portraits, mostly-urnban landscapes and youths. Though some shots are not as good as others, every artist here has at least 2 or 3 gems in his/her collection, and these gems make the book a must.
