Initially, we didn't actually read the words in the book very often because the vocabulary is too complicated (and boring) for a one-year old. However, this book offers loads of opportunities for interaction with babies and toddlers. Early on, our son loved to look at the creatures on every page and play "where's the crab." Once he got a little tired with the pointing game, we took his tiny finger and helped him count the different kinds of creatures on each page -- or point to the biggest or smallest of a certain creature. Now, at nearly two, he's becoming more interested in the text, which is an educational rhyme. He's very verbal and likes to finish each line of the rhyme if we pause and give him a chance.
The book is also very colorful and so great for talking about colors.
We've also enjoyed the tiered, cut-out construction of the book. Each page is slightly taller than the next. When the book is closed, you can see a bit of each page and the key creature on it. Sometimes we talk about all the animals in the book for a good while before we start turning pages.
On the first page, there is an eel poking his head out of a hole. My son thinks it's hilarious when I poke my finger up behind the eel and wiggle my finger while pretending that the eel is talking to him about the other creatures on the page and asking him how he's doing. We've named the eel "Morrie" ;-)
