Lust and Trust: Nan Goldin
Nan Goldin is one of this decade's most influential photographers. She is very much a part of the world that she photographed and therefore she has unlimited access to her subjects. There is no sense of exploitation even though these people, who are on the margins of society, are often caught off guard in private moments. Her work is raw and snapshot esthetic--a recurring theme is that the subjects never quite belong and are lost and lonely in what can often be a bleak and hostile urban environment. She shares with us quite eloquently a form of diary; one can relate so much of their own lives, fears, desires, and pain. She put it best: "I used to think that i could never lose anyone if i photographed them enough. In fact, my pictures show me how much i've lost."

Great story! Great art!
Beautifully illustrated, this telling of a cherished Bible story is a great lesson for children (and adults) today. A young man is taken captive and pressure is put on him to compromise, but he remains steadfast to his faith and his standards. He is put to the ultimate test because of his convictions and God delivers him miraculously. And deals with his enemies. And blesses Daniel and his friends.
Could be subtitled: How to Be Fed to the Lions, and Live!

Another side of a great artist...
As a long time "fan" of the art of Canada's Emily Carr, I was anxious to read more of her writings. Through these letters to "friends", we, the reader, are given another side of Emily Carr. So much has been written about her irascible personality as she grew older; her intolerance, her feistiness. But in these letters I heard echoes of loneliness, insecurity and the fear of aging and growing sick that we all share about our own futures. I am not sure she would have liked having these letters published but I think reading these letters can give an insight that genius is not always confident or happy...that each of her paintings was like a child that she wanted everyone to love and understand. We read about her daily struggle to find a place to live, to relate to people, to just survive. This is what we read in "Dear Nan". The book saddened me that it was obvious that Emily Carr died alone with no one near her for comfort. It made me question the quality of her friends, and if they were truly friends. I think every reader of this book will examine their own lives, be they artists or just human beings because this book is really about friendship.

a gift to our eyes and brain
ever look at pictures and wonder how the photographer was ever given permission to photograph such intimate things? This book is another example of Goldin's ability to let people's guards down and really understand (in an aesthetic and emotional level) her subjects. It is a sucessful collaboration with text and image!

The Dog Food Book

The Dog Food Book is THE best book for dog owners!
I have referred to this book time & time again regarding questions I have about dog food, health, and nutrition. It reviews more than 60 commercial dog foods, has an excellent section on canine nutrition, talks about labelling - how to interpret the ingredients, etc. etc. And, it's independently produced, so I don't worry about the influence of major corporations on the reviews. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in his/her dog's health. It's also very easy to understand, and I've even called the publisher to ask questions when I needed clarification - the company has been very helpful.

A Review by Fredy T., Ines S., and Jason R. (Class 5-506)
We three fifth graders read a book called East Side Story, written by Bonnie Bader. This story is about an 11 year old girl who is named Rachel Boganovich. Rachel Boganovich was a Russian immigrant who came to New York in 1912. Rachel liked to read books but Rachel's father said she didn't need anymore education. Rachel used to go to school and really liked it. But Rachel didn't just stay home. Rachel had to work in a Triangle Shirt Waist Factory. The supervisors were very strict and harsh. Rachel never liked the factory. "WHY"?. Because the place was alway's hot, filthy, dark, and in bad conditions. Wonder if by this paragraph, we thought this book was boring?

Well, we all looked at the cover of the book and thought it would be very boring. But when we finished the book, we found it very entertaining. I found this book very entertaning because I never thought the Lower East Side would be so crowded. (I.S) My opinion about this book is that it is interesting like when Rachel hid in the box so the inspectors couldn't see her in the factory. I also like the protest. (F.T) My opinion about this book is that when Rachel got into fights, to me that was very interesting. (J.R) Another reason we liked this story is because we all live around the Lower East Side.

We recommend this book to people who like to read about history and like to read about something that is related to a biogrphy. We think the author feels serious and emotional about writing this book. This book looks difficult to write. We feel bad for Rachel having to work in a factory aged so young. Hey, do you think Rachel's dream will come ture???

Two Journeys
I found this a fascinating book on two levels. The journey around the world visiting and sometimes traveling with friends was an absorbing story in itself. But the inner journey-the "solo" journey- was a moving and uplifting experience. Everyone has those special birthdays-30, 40, and in the author's case, 60, when one tends to take stock of one's life. The trip was a chance to both see a part of the world we rarely get to see as well as to look back with the author at the process of becoming the person who is taking this trip. I believe a great many people will enjoy taking these journies with Ms Watkins.
