I loved it!
I wanted to read this book to six-year-old children. Before doing so, I read the book myself. It was wonderful. I cried in some parts, and laughed in others.

The adventures of the cats and squirrels were lots of fun and kind of exciting. When I read the book to the children, they were fascinated and listened to every word. I read the story so that the book came alive for them.

I highly recommend the book, as I really enjoyed reading it I know you will, too.

Made me cry in some parts, but I loved it!
This story touched me.

I have always loved animals, but specifically, cats.

This story was mainly about cats and their families, and the adventures they participated in, but there were a lot of squirrels in here, too.

I fell in love with Biscuit, the smallest baby of Long Tail and Boots. The story was a little unusual, but I really liked it and recommend it.

A heartwarming story for animal lovers
While reading one of the chapters to my visiting grandchildren, I could not keep from crying. They in turn, also began to cry.

We stopped for a while and treated ourselves to a snack, during which time we talked about the story, and the children anxiously waited for me to continue reading.

During the story the children sat there in awe, often expressing a variety of anxiety, laughter, fear, and happiness.

The following week, with book in hand, they asked if I would read the story again. I was happy to accommodate, as I too found it as rewarding and enjoyable reading it the second time, as I did the first.

The children also excitedly mentioned that they have adopted an adorable kitten to which they have named "Long Tail."

CRIMINALLY UNKNOWN
if i could take only two photography books to my desert island, they'd be "Jeanloup Sieff : 40 Years of Photography," plus Lillian Bassman's relatively thin -- yet sensually-overloading -- volume. what a crime her work is not widely known. hers truly are impressionist photographs at their absolute finest, dripping with lushness and yet extreme fragility. they seem to float dreamlike around us and about us, offering a glimpse into that most rarefied world: the strange ethereal galaxy of a french fashion model of the 40s and 50s, bathed in moonlight and wrapped in jazz. god these are beautiful pictures.

A book of ethereal black and white fashion photographs
Lillian Bassman treats every photograph as though it were a canvas. With her selective toning and bleaching, it's hard to believe many of these images are photos. Her work in fashion was groundbreaking.

Stunning Fashion Photography! Puts The Zip In Your Zipper.
Lillian Bassman is a well known fashion photographer of the 40's and 50's. Her work is glamorous and visually exciting. The photos in this collection are a combination of photography and other artistic tools which give them an almost otherworldly feel. The book is oversized, which makes many of the pictures big enough for framing which is exactly what I intend to do. There is also a short biography of her career which continues through today. A very good buy overall.

A+++
Wonderful book with explanations of origin and culture - great addition to your art book library - excellent read and techniques!

Best oriental paiting book, beautiful illustrations
If I had to recommend one oriental painting book, this would be it. It includes the most information and the clearest explanations. It is also in full-color and has many beautiful illustrations throughout.

First, the book covers materials including how to choose papers, brushes, and inks. I found the photos of each brush to be very helpful. It then teaches you to how to hold the brush correctly & make basic Asian characters.

There are wonderful step-by-step demonstrations on painting bamboo, orchids, wisteria, chysanthemums, plum blossoms & various animals. Also covered are various landscape elements, water types, buildings, & figures.

The book also covers qi, color, composition, perspective, mounting your artwork and using seals. Some historical information and a glossary in the back are great bonuses.

This is THE book to get for beginning in Oriental Painting
As a relative newcomer myself to Chinese Oriental Painting, I drifted through a LOT of titles - until I found this one.

Not even the shops in San Francisco's Chinatown have this book.

It is thoroughly laid out, with lots of lovely color pics and every section has a practical lesson to follow and learn from. In depth discussion of tools and equipment options are discussed, and different techniques and applications are displayed and explained in just the right amount of detail.

This is also a hardback book, and, in my opinion, represents real value for money.

I shall lovingly keep this book forever as a great momento of my beginning with this medium, a fine and wonderful work.

I can't recommend this book highly enough - it's great.

Simply... great..
Probably the best book ever written for new parents. You won't get tired reading it because of the way it's presented. It's simply a good book to read.

Great for Parenting Group
I belong to a group of mothers who get together once a week to share parenting tips and experiences, and read aloud what some of the "experts" have to say. We've been experimenting with different books and styles, but this one was an instant winner! The author manages to say in a few words what other authors do in whole pages and chapters. It is never boring, and was a real sparkplug for conversations and feedback with other mothers. If you belong to any type of parenting support group, I highly reccommend using this book as a read-aloud text.

so many golden nuggets
My wife and I acquired about 18 inches of books on child care when we had our first child three years ago, and I'm ready to stick them in the basement and free up some shelf space after reading this one. So much wisdom in a one inch binding! This is one of the best combinations of "predigested" expert advice from a variety of sources and author's personal perspective that I've seen in my (slightly obsessive) attempt to outwit the pitfalls of parenthood. As I moved through the book, I was able to get an affirmation of some of the practices my wife and I have followed with our firstborn, as well as some great hints for refining, improving or avoiding others. The style of the book is very conducive to your testing your own experience against the book's viewpoint ("rules" is a bit strong---this is not a dogmatic work by any stretch). Silver has a nice way of educating you without making you feel stupid, and the book moves at a nice clip. (It's also easy to pick up and put down between bottles, diaper changes and the like, since each "rule" is rarely longer than a few pages.) For that reason, this may be an even better book for those who don't read a lot of this type of subject matter than for bookworms like me.

A great modern musical gets a great Vocal Selection book
Complete with color photos and information from the Director, Lyricist and Composer of The Scarlet Pimpernel. This is one of the most informative vocal selection books I have bought in a while.

However the importance is in the songs that are featured. The only notable absence from the book is "Prayer". Yet all the great songs are there. From "Where's the Girl" to "Into the Fire" this book contains some great sings for different ranges. The piano accompaniment is quite good and does the job of accompanying the singer quite well. However it cannot compare to the original orchestral arrangement. The songs are almost exactly the same (singers interpretation causes differences) as those featured in The Original Broadway Recording of The Scarlet Pimpernel (Douglas Sills and Terrence Mann).

A great group of vocal arrangements are presented in this book and is highly recommended.

This is cool!
This score of the amazing musical was the BEST! I loved the arrangements and certain harmonizings that the arranger added. I have many of these "play" books, and this was one of the best! "The Scarlet Pimpernel" rocks!

Very Good Music
This was a really good book, the music is easy to play on the piano and it's just as pretty, if you like playing Broadway songs on an instrument, then you need this book!

Incredible and without parallel
I have finally found a concise yet thourough story of Zen Buddhism ...it is a book called THE STORY OF CHINESE ZEN by Huai-Chin...trans..T Cleary. This books is written by a learned Zennist and accomplished historian and professor of Taoism and Confucianism....this well written book is without equal in its Buddhist approach to Ancient Indian History and the period of Shakyamuni and the intricate web of philisophical factors influincing Buddhism and the nature and causes of spread of Zen and reasons and splits of Hinayana and Mahayana trappings and practices and their roots....As a complete 180 degrees from the professorly books on Buddhist history that takes a dry and bland timetabled look at Zen and Buddhist history this book is both straigthforward in every sense of the term ..not only from the point of view as being written by a very competent Buddhist but by a equally skilled historian ... This book appraoches the branching of Buddhism and the external and internal shapings that were undoubtably the reasons for the formation of the Zen school.....of ALL the scholastic and analytical writtings on Zen and its philosophical compare and contrast chapters ...this is the ONLY book that is written succinctly and thoruoghly on the subject of Buddhism starting with the period of Shakyamuni and the historical catalysts that shaped Zen to its present day form....in short wow......remarkable in all aspects. Having a great deal of experience with other such books in the same genre. I can say with a strong basis for comparison that this book is a real diamond among the numerous lumps of coal that are dry analysises of Zen.

concise, clearly written, excellent!!!
a great book on the history of Zen. Lucidly written!

a succinct summary of Buhddism and Zen
This is Master Nan's fifth English book. It is translated from the Chinese edition which was first published in 1968. It provides a succinct summary of Buhddism from Buhdda's enlightenment path to Chinese zen. The summary on the various Buhddist doctrines from the viewpoint of an enlightened praticioner is particularly valuable. It also provides the history and background of zen in China. Buhdda did not particularly speak on zen, because zen cannot be expressed by words. It has to be passed on from one zen master to another. You cannot possibly grasp it through books, audio, video, etc. However, the book will tell you what zen is and what it is not. It will also tell you how zen developed in China. As such, it contains stories of many zen masters as interpreted by Master Nan. The interpretation of zen dialogue by an enlightened master is invaluable. Many zen practioners went astray for misinterpretation of the dialogues. Invest in Mater NAN's books. They have ever-lasting values. Some of his Chinese books first published in 1955 are still print. Some of the more popular ones went into 20th edition in Taiwan. His Chinese books - 33 of them published both in Taiwan and mainland China - cover subjects in Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Chinese culture and history. His books are widely respected by Chinese academicans.

Grounded view of Heaven
Master Huai-Chin Nan states, with clarity, what meditation is, and how it affects us. He makes the case for the mind-body connection most clearly, and explains how enlightenment is attained by those who can persist in their efforts. There is no new age talk here, only facts as seen from the perspective of a spiritual discipline with threads running back to human origins of spiritual yearning. After having studied martial arts and chi-gung for decades, and read hundreds of books on spirituality, this one elucidates questions I always wanted answered. A truly great book written by a man I wish I could meet.

Real meditation experiences through development stages
I have practiced meditation for more than 10 years and during that time period, I have read more than 60 books on meditation from different traditions: Yoga, Indian Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, Zen Buddhism and Taoism. This book is the only book that not only teaches you how to meditate but also tells you every physical and mental reaction in your body as it is transformed through meditation precisely. The author is a real master who had been there and done that.

Beginners in meditation often surprised when they experience something phenomenon inside their body, or the see some light...and thought that they have made some accomplishment and thought that they have attained "Tao" or the Truth and unknowingly stop themselves on their spiritual path. Without proper guidance, one could be scared and falsely believe in their own illusions.

This book will help you go all the way to Enlighment.

Review of Tao and Longevity
Many people who are seeking information about Chinese spiritual practices and meditation in general, find it easy to go astray. Tao and longevity is a definitive reference for anyone interested in acquiring the basic theory behind meditation practice.

The book discusses the motives for meditation as well as the physiological and psychological effects on the body. Theoretical principles of jing, chi and shen are also discussed.

For a serious beginner I cannot recommend this book enough. In conjunction with this book you will also want to check out Nan's other books (some of the material is quite challenging), author Charles Luk (Lu'kuan Yu?) and Bill Bodri and Lee Shu Mei who wrote 25 doors to meditation.

I hope this is helpful.
