Great ideas for introducing children to theater and drama
Focuses on conducting "Storytelling Arts" programs with children 4 to 10 years old, and is suitable for educators, libraries, scouting groups, etc. Illustrated with b/w photorealistic line drawings, the puppet and mask projects in this book are all constructed using everyday materials in a big way. Paper plates, paper bags, cloth, and cardboard are transformed into large parade-oriented and theatrical puppets, including an elephant, a dragon, a lion, a giraffe, and even an "Overbearing Ogre." The chapter on "Scenery in Motion" shows how youngsters can participate as active scenery in plays, whether as a "Wandering Mountain," or a "Tumultuous Thundercloud," to name a few. This book is great for anyone working with children and theater, and would be very helpful to teachers directing a grade school play; but the seasoned puppeteer or storyteller would do well to look elsewhere.

[Part One: "Am I Crazy to Do This?"] Intro) A Peek at the Possibilities 1) Getting Started

[Part Two: Puppets and Masks] 2) Small to Medium-Size Puppets 3) Large Puppets 4) Simple Masks

[Part Three: Setting the Stage] 5) What was that Blurry Thing? 6) Scenery in Motion 7) Stages for Storytelling 8) Sound Effects

[Part Four: Opening Night] 9) On with the Show 10) Creating a Story from Scratch

Great, but where's the originality?
I just finished the book about an hour ago. It took me three days, and I love the book . No reason to not buy it unless you hated Burning Love. Simply since it's plot is practically identical to Burning Love-only w/ a different atmospere.Happy Reading!PS-can anyone tell me how to get a copy of Burning Love? lost mine.

Superb retelling of Anastasia in 1890 Texas

In 1885, Texas Ranger Captain Russell takes a young white girl he found living among the Apaches to dwell at the Border Convent in Nogales, Arizona. All she owns is a locket with the initials M.S.H. engraved on it. Over the next five years, Mary as the nuns call her tries unsuccessfully to escape several times. In 1890, a dying Father Fitzgerald visits the convent to say his good-byes to the sisters. When he sees Mary, he recognizes her as looking identical to the Regent family, extremely wealthy members of his flock in Texas.

The Regent matriarch, eighty-one years old LaDextra is ecstatic that her long lost granddaughter, Anna Regent Wright, has been found. Everyone welcomes Anna, who stands to inherit a million prime acres and fifty thousand heads of cattle. That is everyone except LaDextra's step-grandson Britton Caruth, who runs the ranch. Even though Anna seems to have insider information, he believes she is a fraud.

Nan Ryan has consistently been one of the best writers of Americana romances in this decade. Her story lines are classic, spellbinding tales that leave her audience desiring more from this incredible talent. Ms. Ryan's latest tale, WANTING YOU, will provide sub-genre fans with immense pleasure from wondering along with Brit whether Anna is the missing heiress or a brilliant con artist? Brit is a typical late nineteenth century Texas rancher; in other words, he is a hunk. This novel is historical romance at its award winning best.

Falters and wavers
I'm very glad that so many readers liked this book, and that it's been a good one for Vietnam vets. But I felt that this book never found its way. It felt like snapshots from a depressive life, intermingled with a thriller. I guess it just didn't work for me as literature, or as a thriller. I was was drawn to O'Nan by his work in Granta 54, but I probably won't try him again.

Dealing with incurable illness
Stewart O'Nan plunges the reader into the chambers of horrors that are the aftermath of Vietnam. He understands the razoredge tension of being underfire, the hopelessness of being without the security of even minimal coping that eats the brains of many Vietnam Vets, and he knows the vagaries of the promised paths of healing from physical and mental war wounds. Some writers describe actual moments of battle contact better than O'Nan but few dig into the battle rattle that so chronically impaled the men and boys who came home from Vietnam. And with all this ammunition on board, O'Nan has written a very fine novel that is, yes, grounded in the sequelae of war, but succeeds in unraveling a fascinating story of at least one man's survival. This is a pithy book and deserves to be placed on the shelf along with O'Brien, Caputo, Turner and the other fine writers who still struggle to make sense out of the irrational Vietnam error.

i loved it!!!!``
In the beginning I was pretty ambivalent with it, found the war scenes hard to read and stay with - but I kept with it and the more I read, the deeper I became drawn in. On all levels the book was real and deep. The writing was fabulous and beautiful. I think for the 1st time vietnam became very very real to me, the horror of it and the bonds the people who were there fighting made with one another and how incredibly hard it was for them to return to life here after there. The book moved me alot.

honest check list for relationship status & how to improve
Reading this book was like a check list for me. My marriage has gotten to the point that my husband's councelor suggested we both read this book, then meet together with him. I found this helpful for me to see exactly where I was in my opinion of our marriage. The occasional "tests" helped me to see myself honestly and admit the mistakes I've been making for the past 22 years. It was difficult to admit that I was in such an unsuccessful relationship, but when I was the one taking the tests and answering the questions, it was obvious that I needed to take some of the advice the author suggests for each "problem". Now I can only hope that my husband will do the same. Atleast for me, I know that I really need to consider a divorce as an alternative to being lonely, depressed and unhappy. Even though it was not easy, I am glad I read this book.

Professional information accessible to anyone
This book was required reading in my clinical psychology, masters level course. I was surprised to see a "popular psych" book in a graduate course but it turned out to be a great text. This book combines an academic and research perspective with accessible and easily generalized examples that can benefit anyone. Since reading it, I have significantly improved my relationship skills and use them frequently in my marriage. The self-tests, the simple practices, and the engaging writing style place this book at the top of the stack for relationship advice. This book is not just for couples in trouble--new couples or anyone looking to improve their relationship skills can benefit. I give it as a wedding gift all the time.

A must read for married couples!!!
I read this book on the advice of my marriage therapist, right after my divorce was final. No advice has ever rung so true. It was a little too late to fix that one, but it's given me a lot to practice for the future. Of course, no book can answer all the questions, solve all your problems, but if you want to understand some of the more intricate patterns of communication that can subtly erode your marriage, I think this book is exceptional. I recently read it again with my partner, and it drew us together, helped us understand the goings on of our communication, where each of us has difficulty, and gave us sensible, reasonable solutions to mend our relationship and make it more positive. The best part of all: neither of us felt horrible for behaving like children; it just helped us understand what the consequences of our actions might be.

One little bit of data he uncovered, the impact of positive to negative interactions between couples, was reduced to a rather mathematical forumula: to practice a ratio of five positive to every one negative interaction. Sounds scientific enough, but in practice it's remarkable how much that little habit has done to improve all of my relationships. I think Gottman's work is a significant contribution to understanding how marriages do work, and what couples can do to avoid the pitfalls of harmful communication patterns. I have recommended it to everyone I know whose relationships are ailing and have gotten a lot of grateful thanks from them.

He's got a great writing style, humorous at times, and the book is fun to read with your significant other. I feel his information is practical, authentic, and gives the people like me, who don't quite understand all the ins and outs of communication, hope to have a better relationship.

Way Too Much Hype about this guy
When I bought this book, I believed I was going to read the cream of the crop of crime novels. It isn't. The main character lacks charisma big time. The villains lack charisma big time. Hell, not even the girl has much. The only really cool character is the ex-football player. And he's a secondary one.

Why do I even give two stars? Because, I must admit, I'm very afraid to give this guy less than that. He certainly did his homework and knows a lot of the cop slang and settings he describes. But that's a very common flaw, to put a lot of accurate information on a BORING plot.

For great crime fiction, do check on James Elroy.

As cool as they come.
'Glitz' is the work of a novelist who knows exactly what he's doing. The plotting is strong without ever seeming contrived; the characters, with the possible exception of Vincent Mora, who's a little too good to be believable, are all arrestingly real; and the backdrops -- Puerto Rico, Atlantic City, Miami -- are vivdly painted in. The plot here is a little knottier than in some of Leonard's later books, but is none the worse for that; his comedy, too, is more subtle. All crime fiction is really a guilty pleasure, but that doesn't mean there's not room within the genre for originality and craftsmanship. Leonard isn't Tolstoy, and doesn't have any illusions about his stature, but on his own turf he is a master, and worth ten novelists who've buried their heads in Derrida and Lacan. Like his protagonist, Leonard knows all the angles. You'll finish this novel with a broad smile on your face, and a desire to read all of Leonard's work.

Leonard is most definately the man!
My first leonard novel was Rum Punch,I have been hooked ever since.I have bought 15 of his books,Glitz is my overwhelming favorite.I often wonder why this novel has not been made into a movie. The way he goes from one scene to the next reminds me of the movie experience.Teddy is the most interesting character I can think of.If you could not find this book absolutely compelling, you may be comatose,or maybe you're just a jerk.

Cheating Lessons (Thorndike Large Print Young Adult Series)

This book is horrible!
This book is horrible! I was reading the other customer reviews and they all said 4 or 5 stars! How could anyone like this book? The plot is falling apart, there is no description, and there are many things that are mentioned mid-way through the book and are never mentioned again! I advise you not to read this piece of garbage (and if you have, my sicerest apologies, NOT! you brought this on yourself!). I wish there was a way to give it 0 stars!

A Young Adult Book for Children
This book's target audience (grades 6-10) is too high. It's a cute, original story but it's one that I find too young for Young Adult. The character is supposed to be a junior in high school but she acts more like a sixth-grader- with an entire chapter of her explaining the habits and mannerisms of a cat and a train of thought that is very immature for a seventeen-year-old.

The plot in the YA novel is usually almost identical to that of an adult novel-with multiple, complex (teenage) problems that need to be solved, or at least recognized, by the end of the book. The plot in this particular novel centers around one thing- the fact that one of the students on the quiz bowl team is cheating. Cheating is not a complex teenage problem.

Kudos to Cappo for touching on a subject that is frequently over looked by YA authors, but this is still a childrens book with a 17-year-old character.

From a publishing standpoint this isn't a problem as children always like to read about characters that are older than them but from a literary standpoint, it doesn't make sense.

My Fancy Review Title
Cheating lessons was a great book that reminded me so much of my school days. It had the classic good vs. evil and yet still was able to relate to our lives today. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to read, or even if you don't like to read, I'd still recommend that you did.

Quick read, unsatisfying
While the characterization is often vibrant and exacting, this debut novel falls short of its promise. A main shortcoming is that the story of Arthur and his family, one of the two interwoven tales, fails to be more than filler, a structural place-holder. And Arthur's telling of the other story, that of a woman several years older than him, rings false--his need to relate these events is nowhere evident. Most disappointing is that many of O'Nan's sentences are ragged and difficult to read. One gets the sense he'll get a lot better.

Influential Book
I first bought this book four years ago and have read it 5 times since. Haunting images, desperate characters. Although this book is about murder and divorce, there are no villans and no heros. This book made Stewart O'Nan my favorite author. Also check out THE SPEED QUEEN

Stephen King for adults
Dense! Needs to be read slowly: sentences are often put together in a way that brings the story to a halt and forces you to read them two or three times. My favorite is on p. 124: "Colored floodlights bathed the front of the complex aqua." Love it or hate it! Reading an O'Nan novel is like watching a train wreck in slow motion. You know that horrible things are going to happen. When they do, they're not as bad as you thought they would be, and yet at the same time they're worse.

Devastated...
I have to say that the whole series has been enchanting. I couldn't put the books down. Yet, I was horribly dissaponted with the ending, not to say it was not good, it was simply unexpected. I truly hope that there will be a fourth book! Interesting, romantic and extremely entertaining, CRASH is one of the best portrayels of true romance I've ever read.

The Bridges of Cyperspace County with a surprise twist
First off, do NOT buy one of these books without buying all three (Chat, Connect, Crash) at the same time - they really do have to be read all together. Secondly, do yourself a favor and don't download these books. Try to find them in book form becaue you'll want the originals to stay on your shelf, ready to be picked up and read again and again.
Finally, here's the reason you should read this series: it is an orignal, well-done and witty flirtation and eventually full-blown romance between a man and woman who meet online. This is the FIRST romance series I ever read which was written from a cyber perspective, complete with emoticons (a crash course in them, in fact, useful if you've not particularly computer-savvy). I've read others since then but this is still my favorite. If you don't have much time to read but love a good romance, this one moves quickly but is fullfilling and emotionally engaging. Be forewarned: Have a box of Kleenex nearby!

Crashed plane!
This was a great book, like many people out there, I am dissapointed with the tragic ending to the cyberseries. I got hooked when I read the first novel "chat" and then had to read the other two. At 16 years old, there's only been very few books I've enjoyed reading. Please Nan McCarthy, surprise all of us with a 4th novel and bring Max back to life. :)

Had the makings of a good story but it fizzled
In 1899, divorcee Ellen Cornelius accompanies her octogenarian Aunt Augusta to London. The wealthy, crusty senior citizen seeks an elixir that will allow her to live forever. In England, the two Americans meet medicine salesman Steve Cory and his associate Padjan, allegedly an Anazasi.

Steve and Padjan agree to escort Augusta to the latter's Indian village where they insist a fountain of youth can be found. Ellen believes Steve and his cohort are clever con artists, shilling her aunt. However, the quartet travels to and across America. On the journey, Steve begins THE SEDUCTION OF ELLEN and soon they make love several times during the trek in places that will hurt the back. Still, though attracted to him, she hates him for what he is doing to her aunt and to her.

THE SEDUCTION OF ELLEN is an amusing historical romance that never decides whether to be a satire or a serious work. The story line succeeds when the plot winks at the sub-genre and Nan Ryan's previous novels, but ironically falls short when the tale turns serious as with the graphic sex scenes. A key secondary plot never ties back to the main theme leaving the audience wondering why Ellen's visit to the Citadel is included. Though often humorous, award winning Nan Ryan's latest novel is not at the level expected from this superstar.

Just be seduced by Ms. Ryan's prose
Nan Ryan's historical romances set against the lush western frontier is definite to please- and with a story of Ellen Corneius as a spinster bound to her spoiled aunt Alexandra embarking on a quest to immortality, Ellen finds a taunting challenge especially Steve Corey whom she believes is a charlatan. They embark on an expedition to the Lost City in search of magic water to prolong Alexandra's youth.

Rest assured, sensuality and full-blown passion is her triumph in this novel but with an exquisite tenderness and compunction for the characters as well - it is though difficult to accept the drastic change of demeanour towards the end when her aunt gains redemption, and the lovers treating each other with mutual respect. Ellen as a prim spinster and she matches well and feisty as the leading lady; Steve is equally enigmatic and dark as a hero. As a romance, logic is cast aside - just be seduced by Ms. Ryan's passionate writing.

The Seduction OF Ellen
Once again, Nan Ryan raises the bar for the genre. With an adventurous tale, she blends cultures, characters and folklore and takes the reader several steps beyond passion. Ellen meets her match in the sensual hero, Mr. Corey. The attraction is mutual and sends the reader into a searing look at intimacy. Do not plan to curl up with the intent of being lulled to sleep. This is some of Nan Ryan's finest work to date.

Fun and Refreshing Read
If you are looking for a short and fun read for an afternoon, Nan McCarthy's novel Chat would be an excellent choice. This short novel allows the reader to eavesdrop on the conversation between two people that are communicating through a series of emails. In the beginning the focus characters, Max and Beverly, are innocently chatting online about computers, but in time their relationship develops into an online love story. This book weighs in at mere 115 pages, so it is understandable that within this length there is not enough time to develop characters in much detail.

Computers play a big role in all of our lives today. People have had their attention span shortened by the intense contact we have with computers and television. We are thirsty for information, but only in little doses, and this book does just that. The series of emails used to develop the plot introduce a man named Max who is new to online chatting and emails.

Initially Max is just looking for some information on what kind of computer system to buy, but he meets Bev, a book editor that has been logging on for years. With each email exchange more is learned about each of the characters, and the lives they live. Max likes to speak his mind asking searching questions early in the relationship, "Are you happy?" (10). Bev is initially portrayed as one who is online strictly for a tool of communication, and does not take kindly to some stranger hitting on a married woman, "You, on the other hand, are probably wearing a smelly jogging suit with your butt hanging out the back and Cheetos crumbs hanging off your beard." (8). With each email exchange the two grow closer together sharing more personal information and quickly this develops into a powerful online relationship.

Additionally, the characters are developed through the use of emoticons in some of the emails. Early in the book, the emails exchanged are just straight text, but as time moves on we begin to see the characters using emoticons to help express their feelings or tone of voice. It is through this we can begin to see something deeper than just an online friendship starting to evolve. Even though it is not hard to guess where the book is leading, it will still be hard to put down, and the ending will be left up to you as the reader to write the next email.

Chat gives those who have not yet experienced the world of email and the Internet a glimmer of what endless possibilities are out there. From finding actual information (like Max originally intended) to finding the love of your life, the Internet might hold your answers.
