When the Halo Falls
This was the first time I had read one of Ms Kane's books. Let me assure you, you will not be disappointed in this masterpiece! This was a good book. I laughed, I cried. This was a good book!!

An Angel in disguise
Patience Goodfellow is in love which would be great but she's an angel and the man she loves is her charge Brady Shaw. She's been with him through everything and knows he's a much better man than what the world would believe. After trying to convince her "boss" that she should talk to him she goes into a shop and dreams. She wonders what life would be like if she were engaged to Brady. She takes up her halo to try on a veil and trips and hits her head.

When she wakes up she has only one thought in mind. To visit her fiance but when she visits him he has no idea who she is. She thinks it's all a joke and stays put. Suddenly the whole town believes she's Brady's fiance and more importantly Brady wants her to be his. A funny charming novel that will make it into your keeper pile Kathleen Kane writes a touching romance.

Pestilence!
Wanna waste your money? Buy a book with no plot, no chemistry and no spark. You will NEVER say that about this book, nor this author.

Kathleen Kane always comes thru for me. When I need an "ahhhh" moment in my life, I pull one of her novels down and read it again. When I need a laugh, I pick up my tattered but oh-so-loved copies of Ms. Kane's many works. When the Halo Falls is yet another keeper. I just wish I could have her cloaned so that she could write a book each month!

Patience Goodfellow will thrill you. She will touch you in places you never knew you had. Brady Shaw is the type of hero that makes you root for him and wanna shake some sense into him at the same time. What I love about this novel is that you also grow to love each person in it. Lily, the former lady of evening, grew on me and I rooted for her "lawful" love.

You won't waste good money with this author, that is for sure!

K-5 Educator Review
Dr. Kain's science books provide marvelous supplemental activities for children to experience the excitement of science. The activities are great for kids with learning handicaps and offer them the opportunity to enjoy and learn outside of a more rigid curriculum. Children are introduced to the concept of the scientific method in a fun and hands-on fashion. Teachers are given ideas for extending the activities into other academic disciplines. And finally there is a wealth of additional resources available in the back of the teacher's manual for those who wish to expand upon the concepts introduced in the books.

I heartily endorse the use of these books by educators of children in grades K through 5.

Erin E. Flory, 5th Grade Special Education Teacher, California

Fantastic!
We got this book because it happened to us too - one child broke an arm twice when falling off a bike. The book was loads of fun and brought back some memories for all of us. A great fun way to share what happens when a bone is broken!

It's like going to the dentist!
Reading the Science Spiders books is like going to the dentist. So why did I rate the books so highly? I have a very good dentist. He's friendly, interesting, and before we're finished with the small talk, he's finished with the injection. The worst part of going to the dentist is over before I know it's happening. The Science Spider books are simple, playful stories about a patient, scientifically inclined mom and her young children. The readers don't realize they're learning science until after it happens. My jaw gets numb just thinking about it. There's no math, but readers of all ages become familiar with chemical reactions, color theory, acids, bases, forces, energy, molecules, scientific method, air pressure, and center of gravity. The lucky children who are introduced to science by the Science Spiders will have a positive feeling for the subject that can only help them in future studies. Dr. Kain has a Ph.D in materials science and engineering. She barely conceals her identity in the books as "Mom." Mom is an excellent role model for all children, but especially girls. She and her kitchen experiments prove that science is very much woman's work. And apparently, so is dentistry.

Crosses over all paths
We are seeing many artists "cross over" between the arts these days. Robert Gass is probably best known for his recordings on Chant. We might probably be most familiar with the "Merry Meet" song, which has been in .wav form for many years. Mr. Gass now approaches Chant from the literary side with this book.

Mr. Gass gives us a look at how he became personally involved in chant, and then explores the history and mystery of chant. He examines the roots of chant, the various cultures who apply chant in their everyday lives, even how we can learn to chant (Mr. Gass assures everyone they CAN chant). He also explores how chant can be applied to our own personal Spiritually.

I noticed this book can be purchased three ways. You can buy the book alone, or with the 2 CD set. You can also find a book club version with a single CD. I like the CD that accompanies the book. The CD gives you a very good overall accompaniment to the book and for those who are not musically inclined it gives a reference point, and an idea of the style of music we are discussing here.

I also found this book crosses over all Spiritual Paths. Wiccan, Pagan, Native American, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, so many paths utilize chant. Chant does not discriminate. I found this to be another "Celebration of our Diversity" and can be recommended to anyone on any Spiritual Path. I also found it to be a most wonderful tool to be utilized by anyone. Give it a try. I am sure you all know at least one chant from somewhere. How about:

We call come from the Goddess
And to Her we shall return
Like a drop of rain
Flowing to the ocean.

You know that one, don't you? See how simple? Sit for a few minutes, singing it over and over. See if you don't feel better. The book has some chants, with music in the back Resource Guide. For those with some music skills, it would be easy to pick up the tunes. The rest of us can sing along with the CD till we have it memorized.

A wonderful exploration of a subject we are probably familiar with but never really explored. I do hope you at least pick up one of his CD's and give this a listen. I think you will be very happy with them.

Very thorough, hard to find information
This book is a rare find. Most writing about Chanting is based on a single religious doctrine/path. Gass, however, covers Christian, Jewish, Sufi (and other Islamic), Buddhist, Goddess/Pagan, and First Nations (aka American Indian... if you want to be inaccurate...) chants. Whew. The book is written in a very conversational manner. It's easy to read and has a personal feel. I was (pleasantly) suprised to see how much of the book is geared towards teaching the reader to chant. There are "exercises" in nearly every chapter, as well as ideas on how to incorporate chant in everyday life.

Occasionally Gass's shifts to New-Agey lalala kindof material that some people may find off-putting (I kept getting the feeling that he was going to start talking about Astral Projection any moment...) The bulk of the book, however, is pretty down-to-earth and definately recommended. It is respectful to all religious belief systems and is very thorough and is sure to have you chanting, whether Alleleuia or Ommmmm.... (or both...)

Imperishable Spirit in Sound
I KISS the pages of Chanting. (When I ordered this book from One Spirit book club, there was an exclusive complimentary CD, with the 'best of' which included Cuncti Simus, Alleluia, Santa Maria, Sri Ram, Om Namaha Shivaya and the surprise of unreleased tracks ~ beautiful CD. This choral group named "On Wings Of Song" blesses and enriches my little life with such grandeur - The music is a dear invitation to enter the imperishable worlds of Love and devotion. The elixir pulsing from the collective Messiah (Heart) transmit the primordial OM....We are drowning in the sea of God's Love. OM, this luminous prana is alive with rhythm and rhapsody. Listen deeply. You can hear the twilight and the nebula chorus. The constellations are a lullaby. The cosmic vibration is so lovely - quicken your heart to accept its sonic invitation. It's a MUST have
This book is awesome. I'm a mother of 2 and didn't need any help with my first child, but my second child was very difficult and I found this to be an invaluable resource. It even lets you know when you should contact your doctor or when you should head to the emergency room. Being from Boston, I know that Boston Children's Hospital is one of the best in the nation. What is also great about this book is that it covers the developmental tasks of a typical child for a specific age group. It is a great basis to know if your child is under or over performing and helps you find your strengths and weaknnesses. It also has all of the growth charts in the back and an amazing appendix of different child illnesses. Anything you could possible want to know or have questions about when and if you need to be concerned is in here. It's like a Bible!

The Only Guide that New Parents Need!
If you are about to have your first child, buy this book. If one of your children or grandchildren is about to have a first child, give this book to her or him as a gift. If you like this book as much as I think you will, you should consider having a copy at home and one in each of the family cars for situations that arise while away from home.

This book deserves more than five stars. It is the only comprehensive guide to childhood development and illnesses that I have seen. The content is remarkable for being easy to understand, concise, and representing many different perspectives (including those of moms, dads, elder siblings, physicians, and other health care professionals). The book exudes a respectful sense of optimism that parents will do a good job, and avoids taking stands about issues related to religious preferences. At the same time, the book is quite up-front about pointing out what works best for children and their families.

The book is organized so that the first four sections deal with developmental issues, from learning to mimic to toilet training to dealing with jealous siblings to school adjustment, on through the school age years in considerable detail. The fifth part gives you information on childhood illnesses, injuries, and conditions.

I particularly liked the way the development sections talked about how children usually regress just before making a major development, and that this is healthy. The book even points out the good sides of childish outbursts. I wish someone had told me these things many years ago!

Having been a parent of four children over the last 30 years, I checked out the book against every illness, emergency, and developmental issue that I ran into for my own children and their friends. In each case, there was relevant material that told me more than I knew when I had to deal with each of these issues, despite having read every book on child care that I could lay my hands on prior to the experience. In particular, the book is very good at explaining both the near-term and the long-term consequences of a situation. For example, one of our children went into severe convulsions with a sudden spike in fever to 106 degrees. The book points out that this happens to about five percent of all children, more often to boys, and that there usually are no long-term consequences. I wish I had known that at the time.

I would especially like to praise the chapter on child care, which has 31 pages that summarize the best and latest research on how to select the right kind of child care if both parents work. You even get what the ratio of child-care people should be to children at different ages. Further, there's an excellent section earlier on what's involved when a child is sick, including how parents should think about how to balance their work and the needs of a sick child who needs a parent at home.

Of particular value to new parents will be the sections in each area called "When to Call the Doctor" which gives you a sense of not only "when" but "how quickly" you should seek help.

To get some idea of how contemporary and extensive this book is, you will find a section on "Body Piercing Infections."

Unlike many books on childhood and pediatric illnesses, this one is not the views of one person. Instead, over 80 physicians and pediatric experts combined to share their expertise, drawing on individuals practicing at Boston Children's Hospital or teaching at Harvard Medical School. I have great faith in Boston Children's Hospital having often taken our children there to deal successfully with important illnesses. I am also pleased to say that one of our children has survived the experience to become a staff member in the hospital's emergency room.

The section on emergencies is not only good, it is also organized to help you prepare to handle emergencies before they occur . . . and to avoid them in some cases. Those pages are rimmed in pink so you can find them quickly if you are in a panic.

Give children the best informed and most loving attention you can!

Brand new and a must have!
I have been a pediatric nurse for 25 years and a parent for 15. I wanted to get a reference book for new parents and found this one published this year. I'm a big fan of Dr. Brazelton and his Touch Points which are included here regarding child development. The disease section was very thorough and I particularly liked the asthma section. It has the most recent treatment modalities laid out simply and clearly. I bought this at a regular bookstore for full price because I had to see for myself if it was of any value. It is an excellent reference, a "must have" for any parent. ....

If you love the young women in your life, buy this book!
I am a 30 year old woman who received this book back in 1987. I just "rediscovered" it this week. As I look back on the entries, I'm surprised at how much I've grown, how much I've learned, how tolerant I've become & also how I have very much stayed the same. This book guides you thru some of the bad things that can happen to a woman who doesn't plot a course for her life. Some of the myths of being a woman are debunked (can't do math, can't be a trucker, or a construction worker, etc). What I liked most is that it doesn't push any specific feminist ideaology - just asking the question - what would you do? The message is clear - don't count on anyone to "take care of you". It tries to teach us to take care of ourselves. It is true that this book (at least my edition) is geared toward working / middle class teens. But as a middle class teen, it helped me enormously! This book is great and I look forward to getting it for both of my daughters!

Shows teen girls that life doesn't end after high school..
I am constantly ordering this book. I am a foster parent for teenagers and I use this book as a family activity as well as at girls slumber parties. It makes thinking of the future and what you want to do with your life almost a fun thing. My childrens' therapists keep borrowing it and not giving it back!

This book was a true inspiration for me..
This book really helped me in believing that sex before marrige isn't right and now that I am married and can always look back and thank the author!

Death Valley: California, 1849 (Survival! 6)

My review
I recommend this book to any one who likes excitement or good adventure. It's very exciting because you don't know if Will or Jess will find water or food. It has a lot of adventure because Will and Jess have to travel through sand storms, quick sand, and desert. When Will and Jess go through the sand storm they have to take shelter in an abandoned cave. It's a very tight space and it's hard for them to breathe. They have to go without meat for days before they find a weak ox, which they then cook over an open fire. I like the characters in the book because they are very independent and different. Will shows his self-sufficiency when he tries to go ahead to look for the rest of his party in the valley. In conclusion, if you like good adventure and great excitement, this is the book for you.

A gripping tale of survival in the deserts of Death Valley.
Twelve-year-olds Will and Jess Brantcourt are a twin brother and sister travelling west with their family to California in 1849. Because of their father's stubborness, the Brantcourts end up being separated in the desert from the rest of the wagon train. Now their wagon has broken down and their father is seriously ill, and the family is unable to continue. Now Will and Jess are the only ones that can save their family from death. So the determined twins set off across the desolate, dry, and unforgiving deserts of Death Valley. The valley threatens to live up to its name every moment of Will and Jess's desperate journey to find help as they encounter heat, thirst, hunger, and dangerous creatures. But they're determined to carry on and not give up, because their family is counting on them. This was another great book in the Survival series. I highly reccomend it if you like historical or survival stories.

Another great Survival! book.
Death Valley was another great book in the Survival! series by Kathleen Duey and Karen A. Bale. This book was about a brother and sister, Will and Jess Brantcourt. Mr. Brantcourt has decided the family will go west to search for gold in California, even though no one else in the family wants to go. Then he decides they will take a shotcut that will supposedly get them to California faster - one that goes through the cruel, unrelentingly hot desert of Death Valley. Then Pa gets sick from an injury, and the Brantcourts' wagon breaks an axle. Now, it's up to Will and Jess to go find help for their stranded family - for they are the only hope the Brantcourts have left. But can they survive in the desert with only scant food and water, and get help for their family before it's too late? Read this exciting book to find out!

It was wonderful!
Picked up this book by accident and what a find. I am looking forward to reading more of Ms. Kane's books!!

I have a new favorite author!
I loved this book! I have read time travel books in the past but nobody puts them together like Kathleen Kane. She has a wonderful sense of humor and it shows in all of the strong characters that she builds. I really felt like I knew each one of them. She puts in personal details that bring the charaters to life. It's hard to find a book that really makes you laugh out loud and cry as well. This book was great! I can't wait to get my hands on another Kathleen Kane story! If you like time-travel romance, you'll love this one.

A wonderful book!
This is a beautiful story that makes you laugh and also cry because you are so touched by the characters. A wonderful fantasy and beautiful romance mixed with love, emotion, drama and a few surprises. A keeper!!

Don't Miss This One!
Another wonderful American Indian novel by Kathleen Eagle which co-mingles two stories, past and present, into one unforgettable book. Cecily, a kind, young and guileless young woman becomes inextricably drawn into the American Indian movement of the '70's when she befriends a courageous young Indian woman and her world-weary but oh-so-irresistable brother, Kiah.

Cecily acquires a 100-year-old traveling trunk at an auction which contains some artifacts and writings of Priscilla Twiss, daughter of a White Indian Agent sent to educate the "savage" Sioux. Priscilla, drawn to the Sioux, comes to visit her father in the rugged, untamed west, and there she meets and falls in love with the proud warrier, Whirlwind Rider.

Both couples, though a century apart, share similar obstacles of restrictive social mores, racial hatred, and tumultuous circumstances in American Indian history, not to mention a suprising revelation which ties past to present.

Highly recommended reading for unforgettable romance, gripping storytelling, and fascinating American Indian History.

It may break your heart, but don't let that stop you...
I lucked out and found this book before it went out of print. If you have access to a used bookstore, look for this title; it is one of the best stories I have ever read. Told alternately in the 19th and the 20th century, and spanning several decades, it is a tale of four lovers - two White, two Native American - who cross the boundaries of their respective cultures and give up what is comfortable in order to commit to one another for all their lives. Powerfully sensual, mysterious and somewhat sweetly painful and disturbing (particularly the 19th century story), be prepared to shed some tears if you find this book. Keep it, it can be reread and seen new each time. I've read as many of Ms. Eagle's books as I've been able to locate, and I think that this is by far her best work.

I CAN'T DESCRIBE IT IN WORDS !!!
The old story is soooooooo moving , he promised to love and protect her and she gave everything up for him , their love was so pure ........ and the modern one is great ( as usual men are trying to be tough and stronge and love doesn't affect them ) but she made it true , she was able to move his feelings i think if u didn't read it , u missed a very beautiful two love stories

Surprisingly good!
As the American Diaries series progressed, I felt as if they were regressing in their style and interest. Then came this one. Reading the back it doesn't seem nearly as exciting as the others and can be mistaken for a sleeper. But it's actually the other way around. It was much better than those hugely descriptive action books in the series (except for Emma, that one was very good). Alexia is a character that you love. You connect with her more than many of the other Kathleen Duey characters. She wants to become a seamstress (ah-ha! Finally one with a dream!) and finally found a companion in the boarding house lady (who is also a seamstress). Her mother had died and she was constantly moving around. She loves her father very much and then faces a moral dilemma when he is going to try to swindle the seamstress. Finally, we come in touch with the character and sit on the edge of our seats... waiting to see what she will do! This is one of the best American Diaries books because of it's moral choices, not because of the so called action.

A con man's daughter faces agonizing choices.
As the daughter of a travelling con man in the early 1900s, motherless twelve-year-old Alexia has always faced many moral dillemas. But it's his latest potential victim that she feels the worst about, because it's a woman that has befriended Alexia and been like a mother to her. The woman is Mrs. Tanner, who runs the boardinghouse where Alexia and her father are currently staying. He finally gets a real job, but quits and decides to swindle Mrs. Tanner, then he will flee with Alexia to another city. Can Alexia finally find the courage within her to stand up to her father, and make her own dreams come true? Read to find out! There wasn't much action here, but it was an excellant book nonetheless.

Excellent book.
Another great American Diaries. Alexia, a 12 year old girl lives in 1905 San Francisco in a boarding house with her con-man father. He goes around cheating people out of their money and now his target is Alexia's true friend, Mrs. Tanner, the owner of the boarding house. Alexia has to stop this. But will she have the courage to do so?READ IT!

Nifty idea
My 2 young daughters really like it and request it often, I hope to see another book in the series soon.

Great book, can not wait for more like it
As a mother of two and a future teacher this is a wonderful book. It is educational and fun to read. Hope there are more coming soon!

A fun and educational children's book.
As a mother, I was quite impressed with this book. Kids will learn about two different cultures and countries as they hear the story of two flys - one from Australia and one from the United States (New York City). A great book!
