A Requisite Resource For Tourists & Locals Alike!
First of all, I have to mention that I live in Maine. And I can tell you from experience that the beauty of Kathleen Brandes' book lies in the sheer span of coverage, which is considerable, matched with a propensity for detail, which is astounding! Even the "Native" Mainers will find much to enjoy in this book. This is a rich, dense, and completely user-friendly volume, folks!
I'll give you an example. I'm a photographer based in the Bangor area. I bought this book for my personal library which aids me in seeking out photographic areas of interest. Last week I traveled to Lubec, Maine - and I used this handbook for lodging and dining info. I located the Eastland Motel in Lubec based on this handbook, and met the proprietor - Lee Aragon - who cheerfully provided suggestions for exploration in the Lubec-Eastport-Campobello region. I mentioned to Lee that I had read about her in The Maine Handbook...and that she was correctly described by Kathleen Brandes as a "Lubec booster". Lee was tickled pink by this, and by extension, I was able to get some nice local insights that I would never have known about otherwise.
Paging through this Maine Handbook, you get the feeling that Kathleen Brandes is a scholar of "All Things Maine", and she is enjoying every minute of it. And who can blame her? Maine truly is.....well.....the way life should be.
Buy the book, come to Maine....and if you already live here, buy the book anyway! It has become something of a "state bible" for me. Can't image traveling without it.
And there is something in this book for everyone. Kathleen has you covered, whether you are single, married with children, an armchair traveler or someone who simply wishes to know more about the Pine Tree State. Longtime locals and prospective tourists alike would do well to mine this gem of a book. I have two dog-eared copies....one for home, and one for my car - enough said.

Maine Handbook Makes Mainers Mighty
This book nearly saved my life when I moved to Maine and didn't know a darn thing about the place except: lobster and Acadia National Park. The author lives here and definitely has a huge fondness for the people, land and language of Maine. It really is like having a knowledgeable local to show you around. She gives great information on cultural events (fairs and festivals..some pretty obscure), great day-trips and off-the-beaten-path hikes and trips (some of which I mentioned visiting to long-time residents..and they didn't know about them!), local-isms (and they abound in Maine), tips on lobster eatin' and blueberry pickin' and more! And, most importantly for the visitor or newcomer, really good driving directions. I've heard that there is a new (2nd.) edition of this book..but this first is such a classic that I hope they didn't goof it up. However, it would probably update the visitor on some items that are no longer in existence: for example, the Bangor Blue Ox minor league baseball team. It also reveals the exact location of Stevie King's house..which is not often given out!

Don't Go to Maine Without It!
"Maine Handbook" is the most comprehensive guide to the state of Maine I've come across. In addition to all the usual tourist information, this book includes wonderful little off-the-beaten-path finds, and even has information on where the nearest laundromats and drug stores are, and where you can get film developed! I used this book on a trip to Deer Isle/Stonington last summer, and was very glad to have it!

Mush On and Smile: Klondike Kate, Queen of the Yukon
Wonderful job of compiling information for this piece of historical fiction! Having heard so much about the Alaskan gold rush and Klondike Kate, I was most interested in reading this version. It made for great reading; especially with the author's slant of Kate reflecting back years later. It truly made it hard to determine fact from fiction. A time stopper in literature! This book was also reviewed by the Tacoma Koffee Singles.

Genuine page turner
I bought this book for a vacation read. I finished it in two days. The mixture of historical fact and fiction are woven to produce a multi-layered plot and a bit of a twist at the end. The romantic element is written in a way that every woman of every age will enjoy. I was reminded of Jan Karon's Mitford series, well written, characters that you feel like you really get to know and can't wait to read the next page. I bought 2 more for gifts for friends. ENJOY!

Read on and Smile!
A dear friend of mine once said, "A woman who tells you her age will tell you anything!" The reader of "Mush on and Smile," is given a unique opportunity to relish the thoughts of a reflective 70-year-young celebrity -- a former showgirl in the wilderness of the Alaskan Yukon -- who probably has never told her real age to anyone. Kate Rockwell's prospective marriage causes her to review her life, her performing career, and her enduring, unrequitted love and ask, "Who am I, really, after all?" She can hardly reveal the answer to herself, let alone to her friends and fans who know her only as Klondike Kate: Queen of the Yukon. Her soulful efforts to discover the real Kate Rockwell provide an intriguing, tender page-turner for the reader of this delightful book. You will find that you do not want to put this book down. Fortunately, it's a quick read -- perfect for a weekend vacation or cross-country flight.

Excellent Intro to Gregorian Chant
I purchased this complete with a copy of "Chant" by the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos.

The beauty and stillness of this is enchanting and refreshing to the mind. We truly enter the world of sacred monastary in this way.

Just beautiful! Pax Domini!

Grounding-Thought Provoking
While walking the reader through the daily life of a monk's spiritual journey, this author also inspires the lay person to listen to the "Music of Silence".

Every chapter deserves contemplation. The book gives everyone a direction to follow, as the hours of the day flow.

I found it even more inspirational to listen to Gregorian Chant while reading. I especially like "CHANT" by the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo De Silos.

If you truly need a break from the hectic pace of today's life then this book is a must read.

It has become a permanent part of my library and look forward to reading more from this author.

The listened appreciation of time
The author discusses how time can be a deeply sacred part of the hours of our lives, and why an appreciation of time has been developed by the experts of the monastic orders. Nothing is as ordinary, or as sacred, as time. Far from being an infinitesimally small unit of measurement or a means of separating one event from another, time provides the means by which the still, small, silent voice of God may be heard. This is a book to take on a sabbatical journey.

Great characters meet to create a warm and heartugging story
As a kid Charly Phelps had a reputation for trouble. But when she returned to her childhood home after twenty years, even Charly couldn't have expected the trouble she found herself in. She smashed her car into a tree, was set up on a drunk driving charge and thrown in jail, and finally found herself being bailed out by do-gooder, knight in disguise...and total stranger, Troy Starr.

Although One More Knight is dusted with humor, the book follows Charly as she faces the pain of meeting the son she had given up for adoption those twenty years ago, confronting the very difficult relationship between her and her father, and reconciling her growing feelings for Troy, who represented everything she had come to despise.

One More Knight is a warm and well crafted story. Ms. Creighton has a real talent for using language to set the tone. That along with characters that the reader cares about and a plot that is both funny and heart tugging at the same time make One More Knight one that you won't want to miss.

TERRIFIC read!
ONE MORE KNIGHT, the newest of Kathleen Creighton's long-running string of books with Silhouette, is also one of her best. As always, a solid, gripping read right from page one. The characterizations (particularly the heroine) are strong, believable and so real as to make you look twice in a mirror -- and then sigh.....

Heroes? Well, yeah, all Kathleen's men are, but they're also several steps past the 'strong silent' stereotype that's plagued contemporary romance (unfairly!) for the past two decades. These men are REAL -- slobbery dogs and all.

Add a terrific grabber-of-a plot (a hallmark of Creighton novels), punches of humor and solid excellence in writing (none of those hackneyed 'green eyed, blonde, silhouetted in beauty' cliches for this author!) -- and you've got another in a long string of WINNERS.

This author ranks up there with the best of Sandra Brown and Nora Roberts -- looking for much more of her work in the future (any break-outs into single title publishing? hope so!).

Thanks, Kathleen! -- TERRIFIC WORK!!!

TERRIFIC characterizations -- another GREAT Creighton read!

A good book with a big surprise at the end
Marie dreams of being a ballet dancer, but cannot follow her dream without a sponsor. This book was neat because Marie could do some dancing, and had a big surprise at the end (I think the best books have a surprise at the end!)

A Shear Joy.
I loved this book from the very first page on! Marie has a tranquil life in bussling Paris, France. Her day consists of helping her parents in the family Cafe and Pension(pahn-SYOHN) or boarding house. Then meeting with Madam Gabrela for her dance lesson. Or, at least, that's how it used to be... Now, the streets of Paris are begining to fill with rebels, the air is filled with the whispers of Revolution. Change is in the wind not just for France, but for Marie personally. Some very important people begining to weave into Marie's life, giving her an idea that just might help with the Country's poverty problems. I absolutly loved this book! It provided such a vivid picture of France and her people, at such a difficalt time in it's history. This book taught me not only about France's Revolution, but parts of it's lanuage as well. Try it. You'll love it!

Marie is my favorite girlhood journeys girl!
Marie is really cool! An invatation to dance s the beginning of her adventures! The best part was the suprise at the end! I think you'll like it!

Probably not in stock
The book is an excellent purchase, but don't even think of purchasing it here because it probably won't be in stock. At least this is my experience.

Mediations on Mary
This gently written, beautifully profound book really touches one's heart. The Blessed Mother is made readily accessible in the minds, hearts and souls of all persons who read this treasure. It is a very enlightening and interesting book and I sincerely hope it makes a positive difference in the lives of all who read it. I really loved it.

A beautiful way of discovering Mary
My husband gave me this book for Christmas and it has become very special to me. As someone who also grew up in the Presbyterian tradition, I had always felt the absence of Mary in the church. When, as an adult, I turned to a more "catholic" religion, I was finally able to embrace Mary. This book, with it's beautiful illustrations and wonderful essays is a spiritually rewarding path to Mary.

Our Views On Mind Games, The Aging Brain and Its Health
We both read the entire book and did the exercises which are challenging and really give your brain a workout, and some of them can be done while driving. It seemed to be saying the brain needs exercise regularly to keep it healthy just as the body does, and the book contains numberless exercises. There is something in it for everyone.

I loved this book!
The authors blended together (in eloquent prose) concepts, strategies, and techniques to sharpen the mind. This book is not merely one to read, but a book to study and review periodically. It contains valuable information that one needs, and should know about the human brain. The authors did their research and it shows. They combined substance, style, and wit in presenting their imformation in a manner that makes the material "unforgettable". If you are looking for a gift that just about anyone can benefit from, this is it! It was a terrific gift I gave myself!

An Outstanding Book
This book has provided the most interesting games and exercises for practice and entertainment. It has accomplished the goal of inspiring me to continue such activities to keep my aging brain healthy. Positive results from having read it are already noticed. However, this book is more than a book of games. The chapters which involve the development, styles of learning, and processes of the brain are presented in most understandable an dmeaningful ways.

Quick and Handy Reference
This is a reference we use on our psych unit because it provides information in a quick and easy-to-use format for nurses who do not deal with medical issues on a regular basis. It has logical cross references and recommendations for further investigation.

Picky Book buyer loves it!!
I felt that this was the most complete and EASY to use Lab book for nursing students, such as I. It even suggests what abnormals can mean clinically.

Simply the best
Honestly, I don't give many books 5 stars, nor do I give many glowing reviews, but Mosby really did an outstanding job putting this book together. The format is friendly, the data is accurate, and the tests are all relevant in hospital or clinical settings. Great book and an invaluable reference for nurses and laboratorians alike!

Good for more advanced work. but a little "out there"
This book was excellent when one wants to do further study beyond the basic numbers and wings. I had a few breakthroughs while reading it. Toward the end it smacks a bit of "new-age" which will probably not bother some, but, upset my own "Christian sensibilities" a bit. However, I (and other people that I know and study the enneagram with) have found it very helpful in furthuring our understanding of the enneagram. This is not a book for beginners. Riso's Personality Types is much better for that. But if one wants to delve more into the heart/head/gut centers this could be the book for you.

Best advanced book on the enneagram.
This book is best read after you read a basic enneagram book first, when you feel comfortable with the different numbers and meanings. It is excellent for taking you to the next step, how to see yourself and others on a more spiritual level, and how to heal yourself. An excellent read!

A book to put your body mind and soul in unity. a must read
If you don't understand yourself your spouse or kids and life seems out of control. Follow the insights revealed in this book you can get it all together and help those around you whom you love.
