Good information for the Healthy & ILL
It is a book that will answer all your questions regarding Food, Diet and Nutrition exactly as its title suggests.
My father is in a "Presistant Vegigative State" due to a massive hammerhadge, and thats what triggered me to look for a good book that will help me to deal with his special feeding requirment. Not only that I have found very valuable information concerning my fathers situation, but I also found excellent information for me and my wife so we followed a dietery program to loose some weight.
Unfortunatly in 'Kuwait' where we live,we have very limited sources of information regarding Food and Nutrition so we needed a reference book that explains every term and has all information needed in details such as the tables and calculating formulas and soforth.
In my opinion this is 'a most have book', and in the field of Nutrition it is 'Second-to-non'.

Excellent!
Krause's Food, Nutrition and Diet Therapy (eds; Mahan and Escott-Stump)10th ed is 1000% user friendly! Each chapter starts off with a glossary of terms in the ensuing pages which levels the learning field. Colorful charts on practical information are generously sprinkled in every chapter with clear illustrations on anatomy, energy reactions, and algorithms. You'll find lots of "ah ha" moments are you go through this book like I did. An example was the increased metabolic rate by adding spice to a meal! And the reference was also right there!

Each author's excitment and passion for the topic covered comes through the pages loud and clear. Cleverly colored boxes of strategically placed information capture your eye and your mind! Another example.. in Chapter 6 on Water and Electrolytes.. the percentage loss of body water and degree of disability associated with the same could not be made any more obvious.. and you just don't forget the message.

This resource covers everything from herbal therapies and rationale to heart transplant and all points in between. Over 1150 pages to get the new Millennium off to a smart start! I already know this book will be among the most used in my professional library. It is highly recommended.

Excellent!
Hi! I am nutritionist, I've worked in research, education and in projects of development in my country, this book has helped me and other colleagues, we called it "Our Bible".

Very, very good.
An unexpectedly good book.

If you're interested in implementation choices for Scheme and the Lisp family of languages, this is an amazing book. Its worth reading even if you never plan to implement a Lisp interpreter and just want to learn a bit of theory and history behind these languages.

The best book available on Lisp implementation
This is an excellent book on Lisp implementation. You'll get a lot out of it, whether you are interested in writing compilers and interpreters (for Lisp or any language) or whether you just want to see how Lisp works. It is the modern day successor to Allen's "Anatomy of Lisp".

Good book on functional languages.
This is the English Translation of a book originally published in French, under the title _Les_Langages_Lisp_.

In it, Quinniec covers a variety of different approaches to interpretation and compilation. Typically, an idea is presented with a chapter discussing the issues related to it -- then in the following chapter, a compiler or interpreter that implements it correctly. He covers compilation to C, compilation to bytecodes, direct interpretation, token-reduced interpretation, denotational semantics, lambda-calculus, continuations, macros, and an object system. It's well-written and engaging, and unlike some translations, the English is handled very well. The primary language being considered (and used) is Scheme -- arguably the easiest LISP dialect to implement and the hardest to implement well.

Unexpected surprise
I picked this book up at a discount bookstore as much because I like to read light-hearted fare for a change every once in a while, as for the fact that I needed something else to charge a minimum amount on my credit card. I mistakenly started reading it last evening. Big mistake. I got so engrossed in the story I could not put it down! I almost skipped dinner, and only finished it at 2 in the morning (and I would have to be up by 6!). The book tells the story of a group of friends who went to high school together, and the secrets revolving around a terrible accident that changed the course of their lives. Emily is a single successful woman who is almost hopeless she will get married and have children. Deciding not to wait anymore for Mr. Right, she buys her own house in the suburbs. Upon hearing a long-lost high school friend on the radio, she feels the need to contact her high school sweetheart, who had unexplicably left her twice in the past. Their deejay friend starts a popular series on his radio show about a group of high school kids who are more than based on Emily and her friends. Her former boyfriend, Jeff, and Emily try to reach out to their radio friend, who had all of a sudden disappeared before graduation, following a car accident that involved Emily, Jeff, and another friend who had been at the wheel, and had ever since been confined to a wheelchair. United again, each person has secrets that unravel during the course of the novel. Its cheesy cover should not lead you away -- there is no explicit love scenes, and this character-driven, well written plot will keep you asking for more.

Kathleen is the most underrated contemporary novelist today.
Kathleen Gilles Seidel is the most underrated contemporary novelist I know of, partly, perhaps, because she writes "romances", but even this does not explain it. Her characters are interesting and diverse and her feel for dialoge is outstanding. People change and grow, but only in believable ways. My husband likes them even!

Excellent Book
This book is an excellent book that has great character development, an entertaining plot, romance (without tons of graphic sex) and is a book I will read over and over again.

The What's For Dinner Cookbook
You must have this cookbook if you have any cookbooks. This book can be used by the busy mom trying to get dinner on the table or for the one-time special homecooked dinner. With the shopping lists, I never forget anything. This book is the best.

The only diiner cookbook you'll ever need
This book is fantastic. I can cook for my family without worring what I am making for dinner. The dinners are well planned. The kids like them. The shopping lists are complete and I am worry free.

It's All There!
I LOVE THIS COOKBOOK! Divided by the four seasons, it provides an entire year's worth of complete meals, not just main courses. Each week provides five days worth of meals, and there's even shopping lists provided. The "Quick Tips" only add to it. This cookbook is great for the new cook. And the variety is definitely there - everything from "down home cookin'" to lighter recipes. My mom got this for me for Christmas, and I pull it out every time I go to make my grocery shopping list.

Excellent reference for massage students
This book is an excellent reference for massage students. It is well-organized and easy to comprehend. It is good as a knowledge source for information look up on pathology and clinical aspects of massage. However for the National certification test I used the following:
The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers Vol 1, Vol 2, and Vol 3
Vol 1: isbn: 0971999643
Vol 2: isbn: 0971999651
Vol 3: isbn: 097199966X
Believe me these four books are well worth it for the national certification exam. The last three books were so specific and thorough which prepared me highly for the national exam.

Very good book, very helpful
I recently used this book to help study for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. I found it quite good as a reference for massage techniques, client history, benefits of massage and sanitation topics that were asked on the NCETMB. I also highly recommend the following three volumes which are available on amazon.com:
The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers

Vol 1 (Topics: Human Anatomy, Physiology and Kinesiology)
(ISBN: 0971999643)
Vol 2 (Topics: Clinical Pathology and Recognition of Various Conditions)
(ISBN: 0971999651)
Vol 3 (Topics: Massage Therapy and Bodywork: Theory, Assessment and Application. Professional Standards, Ethics and Business Practices)
(ISBN: 097199966X)

These four books helped me pass the NCETMB. I was first recommended these books from a few friends who used these books and found it extremely helpful for the NCETMB.

A heart-touching, powerful, and highly recommended story
On The Day His Daddy Left is a very moving picture book about the sensitive subject of divorce by Eric and Kathleen Adams. A young boy must come to terms with the day his father leaves the house. He must become used to seeing his father only at certain times of the week, and a question wracks him - "Is it my fault?" A heart-touching, powerful, and highly recommended story about adjusting to traumatic change, On The Day His Daddy Left is realistically illustrated by the artwork of Layne Johnson and an important addition to school library, community library, and family counseling collections.

Excellent tool for therapists and parents....
Very moving and compassionate, (I cried) it deals with the primary question for children: "Is it my fault that my parents are divorcing?" However, children often don't know how to express this concern and this book would assist in opening a discussion about their feelings. Additionally, it can be read over and over especially during the first few months that children are learning to cope.

As a therapist I am directing parents to this book to assist parents in more fully understanding their childrens' reactions, concerns and questions. It also provides parents with positive models for how to respond compassionately to their children.

Perfect Balance of Realism and Sensitivity
What a wonderful resource for parents, teachers, and counselors! I have not seen a better book for younger children on the pain and confusion of divorce. The text is clear and compelling, and easy to understand without being "written down" to its audience. The question "Whose fault is it?" is one that many children struggle with, and the authors treat the issue in a way that is caring and reassuring, yet very realistic. Beautifully illustrated, it speaks to children who are experiencing divorce as well as those who want to understand what their friends or relatives are feeling. Family therapists should also really appreciate this book. Great job!

An absorbing, rich portrait of the Great Plains
This is a really excellent collection of 77 photos taken 1985-1995 across the high plains states from Montana to Texas. All are in richly captured color, and all manage to bring the panorama of this wide open country within the viewfinder of the still camera. Brown's achievement is to show the suggestive and telling details that transform these "empty" landscapes into spaces that are filled with drama and atmosphere.

A shot of winter prairie, south of Edgerton, Wyoming, reveals the contoured undulations of grasslands thick with frost, the banks of a shallow wash weaving into the distance, the horizon blending into the brightly overcast sky. The entire image seems sepia-tinted in the winter light. An early summer shot of ground water standing dark and rippled in a Nebraska Sandhills pond shows tufted grasses in the foreground leaning with the wind. A single slender fence post is echoed in the distance by a single tree in full leaf and just visible beyond it a windmill. The grass extends to the gently rolling horizon where a white thundercloud begins to pile upward into the vivid blue of a brightly sunlit sky.

Light, shadow, clouds, all seem still but are in movement, and many of the photographs heighten a sense of time's gradual passing -- the hour, the day, the season, the years. A roadside directory, indicating the distances to ranches has been weathered and sun-bleached. An old shingle-roofed elevator stands empty and overgrown with trees. There's a disused one-room school, white paint worn by wind and rain down to the bare boards. Tall weeds grow in the playground, and the setting sun casts the shadow of a swing set against a side wall.

And there are many signs of life, as well -- a general store with gas pumps and pop machines in front, a TV antenna overhead, and a gravel lot for parking; a barber shop with curving glass brick and shiny red tile facade, with an American flag on a pole at the curb; a last-picture-show cinema, the Rialto, with nothing on the marquee, but above it a wonderful mural of cowboys around the campfire and a chuckwagon with "Welcome to Brownville" on its canvas covering.

There are photographs of small town life -- a young man and little girl stand by the front door of a tiny house, the white siding bright in the late afternoon sun and a darkening sky behind them; a sign painter sits on the back of his truck under a hand-lettered sign, "Advertise Dammit Advertise Before We Both Go Under"; a floor-to-ceiling chalkboard is filled with for-sale notices for hay hauling, an early American sofa and matching swivel/rocker, a 3/4 ton Chev. 4x4, toy poodles, chow puppies, and a bird dog that "will point."

And this really only scratches the surface. The photographs reveal themselves slowly, and with a patient and inquisitive eye, there is much to see in all of them. If you have lived in or traveled through this region, as I have, you will see much that you recognize, recall its quieter pace of life, and marvel again at the great diversity of landscape, seasons, and weather.

Kathleen Norris has written an appreciative introduction to the book, and Brown has an essay at the end, describing a lifetime of fascination with this part of the world. The book includes a listing of all its photographs, noting the location of each and the year in which it was taken. For anyone who grew up on the Plains and now lives elsewhere, this book is like a return home. As a companion volume, I'd recommend Ian Frazier's book "Great Plains," which covers this same territory in words and with much the same attitude. Kathleen Norris' "Dakota" is another good one.

An honest plain view.
Photographer Peter Brown wanted this book to reflect the many jouneys he made across the Plains in his youth...''from open country to a small town, through this town, on to a larger one, and then out again into open space and sky'', he says in his Afterword. This great book of photos does just that.

Years ago I read Walter Prescott Webb's definitive study 'The Great plains' and I became fascinated by this amazing part of America (still haven't managed to get there yet) and he descibes how some of the early settlers stopped when the came up against the Plains, being used to the European countryside they just could not take the flatness, no trees, no hills and if it it was not the quietness it was the wind, blowing for days on end. These fine photos capture the flavor of what they must have seen.

The small town photos show buildings with a weather-beaten look, the Allensville, Kansas, city hall is no bigger than a simple house, the lovely aerial shot of Marfa, Texas shows a town you could drive through in a minute and after the photo of Marathon, Texas it is back to the flat landscape until the end of the book.

If you want to capture the feel of the Plains this book will do it for you...an excellent keepsake. Maybe I'll visit next year!

picture perfect
I found this book in the giftshop at the Sioux Falls airport in South Dakota. As a woman who grew up On the Plains, I found that Brown's photographs captured the true essence of the beauty one finds there. It's not simply a collection of "postcard" photographs of abandoned windmills, lonely pastures, and fragile pasque flowers. The photos depict the "real" plains, complete with its people and its architecture. Norris' introduction is, as I had anticipated, an enjoyable complement to the photos. This is a lovely book to share with people who appreciate the beauty of the Great Plains.

A mother's gift
This book is a wonderful book of unusual history of an everyday object. The rug has a history that most people don't know but Kathleen R Bashian "does!" and she wishes to share it with those of us who are curiouse enough to ask "The Rug?" yes that simple piece of wool, silk or many other fine fabrics has a past that only one women knows and now she wish to tell the stories of the rug under foot. It's stories play a bigger role then one would notice. In fact if one did read this book, one might ask "Why isn't that taught in history?" Indeed this book will bring a smile to your face and a few more brain cells satisfied. I would recomend this book for any one who has a rug under foot.

For all pop culture, interior design & carpet enthusiasts.
Once Upon A Carpet is a unique and beautifully produced history and survey of the carpet through photographs and paintings. Author Kathleen Basbian presents her historical and cultural survey in six chapters: If The Rugs Could Talk? (carpets in diplomatic space); Roll Out The Red Carpet! (carpets in privileged space); From Cradle To Grave! (carpets in domestic space); This Is Holy Ground! (carpets in sacred space); Oriental Mystique! (carpets in exotic space); and Carpet Diem! (carpets in unexpected space). Basbian's lively and informative text is engaging, entertaining, and at times surprising. Once Upon A Carpet is further enhanced for the reader with an epilogue, endnotes, bibliography, picture credits, and biography. Highly recommended reading for students of popular culture, interior design, and carpet enthusiasts everywhere.

A gem to keep or to share!
From the fist moment, I knew this book was special. The cloth binding and gold-rimmed pages make it feel luxurious, the four-color prints throughout build that luxury and the richest treat of all is in the blend of language, stories, art, rugs and literature to weave a tapestry for the reader. We have only one oriental rug, but I treasure it even more now after visiting the history, mystery and romance of this cherished possession. Thank you Dr. Bashian!

Counting to ten in a Japanese garden through haiku
It makes sense to adopt a non-traditional definition of haiku for this counting book that looks at the hidden secrets of a Japanese garden. So what is impressive is that the haiku in this volume follow the traditional five-seven-five syllable pattern. "One Leaf Rides the Wind" combines the haiku poems of Celeste Davidson Mannis with the illustrations of Susan Kathleen Hartung, created using oil paint glazes on sealed paper as we follow a young girl as she counts her discoveries in and about a garden. To help young readers to understand that Japanese gardens are places that encourage visitors to look within themselves to find peace and tranquility, this beautiful volume includes notesa bout Japanese religion and philosophy. This is how we learn about the shih tzu dog statues that guard gardens and temples as well as the sweet treats that are part of a traditional Japnese tea ceremony. "One Leaf Rides the Wind" is a lovely little counting book because it does so much more than simply provide ten different things for children ages 4-8 to count; it also introduces them to the aspects of another culture that should inspire them to further explanation (and which even inspires some reviewers to use haiku to express their own joy over this book).

Simply Gorgeous!
This book has it all! Beautiful words, pictures and more. It is a misnomer to pass this off just as a counting book. It is poetry, it is art, it is entertainment and it is educational too. What a thrill to be able to sound so knowledgeable about Japanese gardens when asked questions by my little one, thanks to the very discreet information portions of each well designed page. The best part was the final image where we could see the whole garden and recount our journey while counting up all the elements gathered together in a single beautiful painting. Don't miss out on this one! It will be enjoyed for years.

Took my breath away
Took my breath away
