Excellent IC Recovery Guide
This book, as well as Catherine Simone's first book, is a must-have for anyone who is serious about taking charge of their own health and recovering from IC. A year ago, I read Cath's first book and began trying the suggestions she made. A year later, I am MUCH improved. I read her second book recently and found more useful information that I have already begun to put into practice. The suggestions she makes are self-help based and easy to do at home. She offers a very compelling theory for what causes IC and a practical approach to overcome it, always with the patient's comfort and safety in mind. She also encourages individual choice and research, rather than dictating some rigid program to follow. Her compassion and understanding of fellow IC sufferers really comes through. Finding Catherine's first book changed my life last year and her new book is prompting further changes. There's lots of hope and inspiration here!

Along The Healing Path,Recovering from Interstitial Cystitis
Catherine Simone has hit the mark again with her new book.Besides going into more detail about natural healing modalities she encourages IC patients to "find their own healing path" regardless if they have a medical doctor or alternative practioner. This is the message that I came away with personally, that we all have the power to heal ourselves and to trust your gut feelings. Although western medicine has offered IC patients some treatments and medicinces for this dreaded disease, they don't work for all IC patients and some are very invasive. Alternative medicine may not have all the answers either but Catherine Simone,a former IC sufferer herself,is living proof that alternative methods work and many others are finding this out as well.A must read for anyone with IC and wants to get well."The road less traveled" might be a longer road and not a familliar one,but it will get you to where you want to be....a better life in terms of health for the IC patient.

I consider this one my "IC BIBLE"
This book is definitely a "must have" for anyone suffering from Interstitial Cystitis, especially those not having much luck with conventional medicine. The author makes you feel as though she is right there with you, guiding you through each and every herb she found that helped her. She goes into great detail about each herb, what it is used for, and any known side effects or warnings. There is a wealth of information in this book written by a recovered IC patient who has put years and years of research into this disease. Her focus is what can and will make the IC body healthier. Thank you Catherine for another great book for those with IC.

A very Good taste.
This book gives you a very good taste of all the natural alternative building techniques, and also where to find out more information on them. This is an excellent book for you to start researching all the different alternative building techniques or if your already well read on the subject it may introduce you to some new techniques or be a good refresher on the subject.

Art of Natural Building
This is a great place to start your research if you are interested in natural building. Web sites, resorce books and organizations are listed at the end of each chapter. This book started my career in natural home building.

Stylishly Ethical Living
Today, around 5 million people on Earth work and live in buildings made of adobe, stone, rammed earth, straw bale, cob, wattle and daub and so forth. That is, most of our planetary brothers and sisters live in earthen houses that rely on renewable human labor and local resources like mud, straw, rock and tree. These houses are less energy intensive, more durable, and are often more esthetically pleasing than so-called "modern" homes, as this book shows.

"The Art of Natural Building" questions the environmental responsibility of a 5,000-sq-foot, 500,000-dollar house. As more and more people begin to make the kind of money it takes to buy their own American Dream house, we must question the feasibility our of contemporary building practices. Would it be possible cover the globe with modern homes? Building companies certainly think so, but aside from what a project of this immensity what mean environmentally, the resources are simply not available.

There is simply not enough lumber, brick, cement, and processed material to go around. Our building industry would gladly sell us into oblivion if it meant a buck or two in the short-haul, but we need to get away from this kind of thinking. We also need to consider the environmental impacts of our current practices. What are these impacts?

As this book reminds us, buildings already account for one quarter of the world's wood harvest, two-fifths of its material and energy use, and one-six of its fresh water usage. In the past 100 years the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has risen 27 percent, one-quarter of which has come the burning of fossil fuels just to provide energy for buildings. During the same period, the world lost more than 20 percent of its forest. Quite simply, our building philosophy is not sustainable; and with a populaiton of 6 billion rising at an incredible rate every year, reconstruction of this philosophy becomes all the more timely and important.

We can start by dropping out of the rat race and getting our hands dirty. Natural building is much more affordable, durable, environmentally responsible and estheticly pleasing than the track homes and skyscrapers advancing on the horizon. We can also avoid the loan-mortgage game which weds us to unfulfilling job and Sisyphus-like existence. We can create spaces that are non-toxic, unique, and ecologically sound. And perhaps most importantly, we can reconnect with Earth and the spirit of artisanship.

Along with the philosophy, you will discover a veritable treasure trove of natural building styles and ideas, from the radically new and innovative - like concept "earthship" - to the ancient and elegant, such as the living roof pictured on the cover. Architects need not apply, nor must you be good with your hands to fashion your own natural house. I consider myself very fortunate to have seen this book before investing in a home of my own. Like many people, I might have ended up working the rest of my life to pay for "a house without a clue."

By far and away, this is one of the most important books I have ever read. Philosophers dabble with theories of justice, beauty and truth, but with this book you will discover how all of these ideas can be BUILT into the very structure and fabric of your life. You will discover the ethics and aesthetics of building design and ecological living.

Filled to the brim with great references, links and some amazing photographs to stimulate your right brain, "The Art of Natural Building" is a must for anybody interested in saving the planet and saving a little money at the same time. The ultimate ecological building encyclopedia! A must read for all dwelling creatures.

The Chambers Dictionary

THIS IS THE TRUE SUCCESSOR
"The Chambers Dictionary" is not just the official reference dictionary for U.K. Scrabble competitions, it is the true successor of the famous 'Chambers Twentieth Century Dictionary'. With more than 215,000 references and 300,000 definitions, this lexicon is (arguably) the most complete and the most comprehensive single-volume dictionary available in Queen's English. It is worth every cent you spend on it!
Misled by name, many people who rushed into buying 'The Chambers 21st Century Dictionary' instead of this one realized their mistake a little too late. And, I can understand their anger with Chambers Harrap Publishers Ltd (for the confusing title which they mistook for the successor of the 'Chambers Twentieth Century Dictionary'). Be sure not to be misled!

Chambers Dictionary rocks!
I don't know if the definition of "rocks" in Chambers would render the correct sense to the title of this review as I have only just purchased my third copy of this dictionary, having given away my previous two to people who just fell in love with them. I think that speaks volumes in itself that a simple dictionary might inspire such passion!

I use many other popular dictionaries when I want to see if most people would understand my usage of a word; but if I want to know about it myself, I use Chambers. Chambers is probably the most comprehensive single volume dictionary around. It is often highly readable and amusing. It is the official Scrabble dictionary for the UK, and if you play the game as I do, to improve your vocabulary, there's no other single volume reference like it. There is no other lexicon which captures the wealth of the language around the world with such geographical impartiality.

It is not easy to find it in some countries (which is why I had to order it at Amazon), and that is a real pity. I hope this does not mean that it is reaching the end of its lifetime as I recently heard it was out of print. I wish it came on CD-ROM with regular updates from the publishers.

Publishers information

Lifetime of writing her book
Mrs. Vos's daughter gives her mother a most beautiful compliment in writing of her mother's passion: creating a Biblically accurate children's story Bible. She observes, that, as a child, she took almost no notice of her mother's personally-committed habit of ascending the steps of their home to an upstairs area where she could research and write... what has become one of the best Bible story books written.

Our family used it as a three year Bible course. We learned so much from her added notes which weaves the stories to the time line of Israelite history. Catherine F. Vos' chronologically written stories gave a point of reference from which our son could create a timeline of pictures and Bible references.

Very good book with very few pictures.
We have used this book as a part of our family worship time for several years. The more I see of what else is offered for children's "bibles" the more I appreciate this book.

For yourself and your kids!
My husband was given this story Bible back in 1961 when he was baptised as an infant. We are still reading it to our 4 children today. It has been glued and reglued, taped, etc. to hold together this beautiful text. I was ecstatic to discover it's been recently republished. I have encouraged many parents to purchase it as it is an excellent, easy to read Bible for the whole family! Parents themselves don't often model personal devotions because so much of the Bible is difficult to understand. Read this every night and I guarantee you'll understand your own Bible much better, and have the best basic biblical overview possible! Vos doesn't water down the Bible stories - even some of the gory details - but in a respectful, careful manner she presents nearly every bible story. We LOVE this book!

inspiring, thought - provoking, life-changing,and EMPOWERING
This is my favorite book. I have now read it 3 times, and it continues to be empowering. The prayer suggestions are straight forward result achieving prayer suggestions. I had my largest month in business after doing the exercises in one of her chapters. I promise you, if you read this book, and really use the exercises, it will change your life, and bring fulfilment and dreams to reality.

Excellent book, easy to read and very inspirational
All of Catherine Ponder's books are excellent, informative and inspiring. This one in particular is so appropriate for the times of this society's materiality. Dr. Ponder is never "preachy", just very matter-of-fact with a significant number of examples. It's little wonder that she has been called the "Norman Vincent Peale" of lady ministers. I personally like her better, and she has a great sense of humor running throughout her books.

Change your thinking, change your life.
Every Ponder book I've read was better than the last; however, I do believe this one is my current favorite. So many ideas, so many prayer techniques, so much potential for such good in my life, I'm bubbling over with enthusiasm. The best thing I can say after reading the book is that Ms. Ponder has renewed my faith. I had become cynical, bitter, and angry. I just felt I had absolutely no control over my life. But I've been putting Ms. Ponder's ideas to work, and I have been faithfully praying and asking for God's assistance. I have let go of so many grudges and have stopped blaming everything and everybody for situations that go awry. I am more at peace, and it's thanks to Ms. Ponder. I highly recommend this book, and any book by Catherine Ponder.

Book of Sarahs

Spoiled little girl with a sense of entitlement
The first part of this book depicts a spoiled little girl with a sense of entitlement who didn't (and still doesn't) know how good she had it! The couple who adopted her were fabulous parents. They were good to her beyond all measure and loved her unconditionally. Unfortunately, Sarah has never been able to accept that love, let alone return any of it. The story she tells, however, of the search for her birth parents becomes more and more fascinating as the pages turn..... It is quite a story, and by the end of the book I felt that she had come to terms with who these people were and are, but the adoptive parents are still out there someplace, wondering what happened to the little girl they adopted and loved. Sad story.

An Honest, Candid Memoir
I beg to differ with some of the other customer reviews posted for The Book of Sarahs. Reality is messy. Members of the adoption triad--birthparents, adoptees, and adoptive parents--share a complicated, emotionally charged relationship from the moment the adoptee is born. There are one thousand and one reasons why birthmothers feel that relinquishment is the best possible choice for their child; there are just as many reasons why adoptive parents choose to raise a non-biological child. But the adoptee has the most to gain or lose. In my twenty-six years as a birthmother, I am continually amazed by the infinite variety of paths triad members have traveled, yet we're all connected by the same feelings of uncertainty, wistfulness, and longing for what might have been. Thankfully, adoption today is much more open, kinder, gentler; many studies have documented the impact of adoption on all triad members, and there are fewer black holes than there were a generation or more ago. Catherine McKinley's personal story of life as an adopted Black child raised in a white family and predominately white community will captivate readers. One does not have to a member of the adoption community to appreciate her search for self. Ms. McKinley's prose is a pleasure to read, a beautifully, richly written story of relationships that readers will find hard to put down.

Real, not falsely heartwarming
This is a very interesting, readable account of a biracial adoptee's search for her birth parents. Growing up, she fixates on the idea of an imaginary but vividly detailed African-American birth mother. Finding out that her actual birth mother is white is only the first shift she must make in her outlook. Subsequent revelations shatter some other expectations, but there are some happy surprises too. Every step of the way, though, the relatives she turns up are actual people, with histories and flaws and good points and bad points, not one-dimensional characters ecstatically welcoming the lost sheep.

It wasn't a major point in the book, but I just had to laugh when the author described her lack of enthusiasm for the adoptive family's hiking and birdwatching expeditions, even though she was adopted as a baby. A very funny nature/nurture case study.

Catherine : the story of a young girl who died of anorexia

Excellent
This is an excellent book. ...I would recommend this book to those suffering from an eating disorder, or to the friends and family of a sufferer as it gives great inssight.

DANGERS OF DIETING
I read the novel 'Catherine' a few years ago, and it deeply saddened me. 'Catherine' is written by the mother of a twenty-two year old girl who died of anorexia nervosa in 1984.

The testimony is a brave and frank account of Catherine's terrible illness which gripped her from the age of fifteen years old. It intersperses extracts from Catherine's diary, which show the tragic mental and physical effect this illness had on her. Her diary records her food intake, and her weight, which tragically plummets to 3 stone when she dies.

It touches on her childhood days, where Catherine was a happy and bubbly child, and continues throughout the development of her illness.

I would recommend this book to anyone, especially young girls considering dieting. It shows how out of hand dieting can be, and certainly a great help to those suffering from anorexia. I myself suffered from this illness, and this book gave me some strength to battle with it. I didn't want to die like Catherine, and the many other girls who die each year from this horrifying condition.

truthful insight into an often romaticised world
eating disorders are often romanticised; few know of the realpain which they cause, and courage which they demand, in both thesufferer and the family members and friends. this touching documentary of a young girls struggle with, and eventual defeat by anorexia nervosa is openly told by her mother and accompanied by excerts from her diaries. as the book so truthfully details catherine's behaviours, it may be disturbing to the unaware, tear-wrenching to those directly/indirectly affected but yet also so critical to the understanding of the seriousness of these psychological disorders.

A long-time favorite of mine
My sister and I recently discussed how we loved this book as young teens. First read it as a Reader's Digest Condensed book. I loved it so much that I've since purchased many of Ms. Cookson's books. She feeds you some history and flavor of another culture, painlessly wrapped in an emotionally gripping tale. Another favorite from her: Feathers In The Fire.

Wonderful Story
As a huge fan of Catherine Cookson, I'd have to say The Dwelling Place is the best I have read so far...and I've read many of her books! Don't miss this story of a young girl's struggle to ovecome the odds at keeping her family together. Her selfless strength of character and integrity throughout this story, as well as the satisfying endings to this and all of her stories, are what make Catherine Cookson's books so wonderful and keep the reader coming back for more! Read The Dwelling Place ~ you won't be disappointed!

My all time favorite
I have read this book for many years. I bring it out once a year to enjoy it. The courage that Cissy had was so unbelievable. I felt like I was right there in the cave.Catherine Cookson 's books make you feel that you are living a part of history Bravo Catherine Cookson.!
