Houser: The Life and Work of Catherine Bauer
Published in Hardcover by Univ of British Columbia (1999)
Authors: H. Peter Oberlander, Eva M. Newbrun, and Martin Meyerson
Amazon base price: $85.00
Average review score:

A Feminist Activist In Housing Policy
Houser is part biography and part intellectual history of the early days of idealsm and activism in the housing movement. Oberlander and Newbrun are effective in using a sensitive telling of the life of Catherine Bauer to evoke a sense in which housing policy today has lost its way despite the foundations laid by Ms.Bauer and her colleagues. This book is a must read for those interested in reviving American housing policies.

very informative, very enjoyable.
This book is not only required reading for anyone interested in public housing, but also very enjoyable as a lively account of a most attractive and courageous woman. It is fun to read about her amatory exploits on her first trip to Europe, exciting to read about her successes in public life, and sad to find out about her tragic death. I would recommend this book to anybody interested in a remarkable woman's career.

Atlantis-The Lost Empire Review
We ordered this book because after I saw the movie, I admired the animation. I can say that this book is quite easy to understand, and it makes drawing easy and fun. I admire all of the "How to Draw Disney..." series books very much, as I have a few of them. I would definetely reccomend this book to anyone I know that enjoys Disney films, and I also would like to add that I have drawings that I drew from Disney's Atlantis all over my room.
These books helped me to draw quite well, even though everyone said that I already drew good. But now, my drawings are to MY satisfactory. I would like to repeat one last time that I am very glad this book came out, and that it has very easy-to-learn step by step instructions.
The End

Walter Foster does it again!
I am a rabid ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE fan and have an extensive collection of books, toys, and posters relating to this film. And this is one of the best books there is! The film has a highly stylized look, and this book helps a lot to make it easy to reproduce it. The instructions are simple, as is typical of Walter Foster books, and the illustrations are marvelous. My ATLANTIS character pictures look much better since I got this book. Nowadays, this title is somewhat hard to get, as it was published in January, but it's worth the hunt! You don't have to be an ATLANTIS fan to love this book! Definitely one of Walter Foster's best!

Illuminating!
This book is fascinating. I was delighted that - although I am not a psychoanalyst - the book is written with such clarity that I could easily understand its complex psychological concepts.

I was attracted to the book because I am a writer and it contains a section about creativity and addiction which I found extraordinarily insightful.

This book makes excellent reading and is also a useful tool for self-examination.

Hungers and Compulsions: something to chew on!
Hungers and Compulsions, co-edited by Jean Petrucelli, Ph.D. and Catherine Stuart, Ph.D. is an ambitious, thought-provoking and perhaps even life-altering, collection of scholarly writings by various experts on "addiction" in the broadest sense of the term.

While the book is targeted primarily at professionals in the fields of psychology/psychiatry, etc., as a lay person, I find myself reading it "compulsively" (if you'll excuse the pun), since it offers fascinating insights into areas which may touch our lives or the lives of those we know -- hunger disorders, cigarette smoking, alcoholism and drug addiction, etc.

The book also explores the patient-therapist relationship, from unique vantage points: often that of the therapist and his or her own needs or the analysis of a literary character's behavior.

If you are looking for substantive summer reading, I think you'll find it dulce et utile. After reading the first few chapters, I was shocked to find myself in the exercise room for the first time in my life! Perhaps it was the image of the coughing cigarette smoker or the patient who yanked and ate her hair. Hopefully, it will inspire others towards positive change, as well.

I, Rachel: A Biblical Love Story

Author: Catherine Brown Tkacz
Amazon base price: $13.50

Lyrical and moving
I, RACHEL is a beautifully rendered poem with the rhythms, sensibilities and forms of ancient narratives. It evokes a long-ago time and place as well as timeless emotions -- the love of a woman for a man, the longing for harmony within a family and a tribe, the desire to preserve faith in God. We also see what gets in the way -- jealousies, deceptions, many human frailties. The story is compelling, skillfully plotted, aesthetically satisfying. A beautiful book. I think a broad audience of readers, of many ages, will find this a treasure.

I, Rachel
I, Rachel: Beautiful poetry contemplating love and knowing.
Rachel is very perceptive, reflecting on all the loves in her life. I, Rachel is for everyone, reflecting the great measure of compassion, hope and JOY which comes from believing in the God of Jacob. I LOVE THIS BOOK!! You will want to share with your friends and family, save some time and get more than one copy.

Excellent lectionary resource
One side-effect of the common lectionary used by Catholics, Episcopaleans, Lutheran, and various mainstream Protestant churches is the development of some excellent lectionary based resources. (A lectionary contains the Biblical readings for a given Sunday).

This series of three volumes for the three year lectionary cycle (each year concentrates on a synoptic Gospel - Matthew, Mark or Luke) contains music, poetry, art, etc. that in some way reflect on the Scripture for a given Sunday. The volumes are carefully multicultural.

An example: for the first Sunday in Advent, there are poems by Czeslaw Milosz, Sandra Cisneros and Janet Morley; a photo of a festive cross by Claudio Jimenez; quotations from Lamar Williamson Jr. and the Gelasian Sacramentary; a song by Arthur G. Clyde (contemporary); paintings by Rodolfo Abularach and Salvador Dali.

Each Sunday is equally diverse. You should always be able to find something that meets your needs and/or challenges you to reconsider your needs. Highly recommended.

gorgeous
Gorgeous book of art tied to the Christian lectionary. Poetry, paintings, photographs, sculpture, scripture quotes. A real treat!

Captivating - Couldn't put it down!
My first novel by Catherine Lanigan, but certainly not my last. This book was well written, easy reading and didn't bog you down with too many characters at the very beginning of the book. It was good, clean reading and wasn't chocked full of explicit sex scenes and profanity. I picked up this book at every opportunity I had to find out the "rest of the story." If you like romance and drama - this is the book for you. Finding other books by this author is at the top of my "to do" list and I can't wait to get started on another one. I loved the bio in the back of the book where her college professor told her she would never earn a living as a writer. Ten best selling books later and two movies to her credit isn't too shabby. I am glad she didn't let her professor's stupidity discourage her from fulfilling her dream. Way to go

Mainstream fiction at its' most enjoyable
In a wealthy suburb of Chicago, ostensibly affluent Bud Pulaski sees no other way out of his current predicament except suicide, which he commits. Thirty-eight year- old Roya, his grieving spouse of twenty years is further shocked when Kitt Cabrizzi, Bud's mistress for almost four decades, announces who she is at the funeral. Her parents offer Roya no help as they can't deal with the suicide. Roya's life spins even further out of control when she sees how in debt the family truly is.

As Roya begins to salvage her life and that of her teenage children, she realizes that she trusts no males after learning the devastating secrets hidden by her allegedly beloved husband before he took his life. As she straightens out her own life and supports her children during their time of need, Roya depends on no one else. However, that does not stop her from falling in love with Nick Petros and also having to contend with a vengeful Kitt, who blames everyone but herself for all she lost with the death of her beloved Bud.

Catherine Lanigan scribes a brilliant relationship drama that has a unique twist in the central story line that links everyone to the man who has killed himself. Thus, the story line hinges on how various females behave while coping with a sudden and violent death, especially since they are unable to confront him with the repercussions to his choices, including the suicide. IN LOVE'S SHADOW is a great contemporary women's fiction novel that is sure to garner awards for the remarkable Ms. Lanigan who vividly demonstrates how women can, through adversity, empower themselves.

First Class
I saw this browsing through a bookstore. First class all the way. I use it all the time as a professional research chemist. Really well organized.

My one regret in life is losing this book...
Excellent text and I have been trying to find a copy on it ever since I lost mine... Presents quite a bit of the subject in a very well thought out and organized way... If you ever get the chance, then sit down and take a good look. Serves as a great companion to Cotton and Wilk. "Basic Inorganic Chemistry" or those books...

Abondanza Again!
Without a doubt, this is my most favorite of cookbooks. It's not the most thorough and it's not the most helpful, but it certainly is the most fun. The cover, a snapshot from the movie "Good Fellas" shows Catherine Scorsese (as Tommy's mother) sitting at a table having just served three gangsters a midnight snack; the gangsters are Joe Pesci (Tommy), Robert DeNiro (who, Catherine claims, thinks she makes the best pizza in the world), and Ray Liota. This book is filled with simple Italian-American recipes handed down through the years on both the Scorsese side and the Cappa side (Catherine's family). The most famous of these recipes is the first--tomato sauce with meat--and meatballs--which every good Italian American knows is consumed on Sundays--that's the tradition. There are veal recipes and recipes for soups (Catherine's lentil soup is the best--I've made it). And of course there's the previously mentioned pizza (sausage or pepperoni) about which Robert DeNiro raves. There are also several dessert recipes--the Sicilian Cake, with ricotta cheese and heavy cream providing the center--being the best. There are transcripts included from Scorsese's documentary--"Italianamerican"--from which the title of this book comes. Catherine and her husband Charlie reminisce about life in New York's Little Italy on Mulberry, Mott, and Elizabeth Streets. There are several charming black and white photos of the family through the years--the Scorseses, with little "Marty," standing beside the Christmas tree which the old folks "didn't go for." The anecdotes are sometimes hilarious; Catherine and her sister-in-law, for example, laugh about how they'd go to DiPalo's deli and make fun of the way customers pronounced such words as "ricotta"--it's rigotta--and "capicole"--it's capicoli. The praise on the back of the book, from Francis Ford Coppola, summs it up: "I am very happy that Katie's recipes are being published, so that I can immediately start trying them out." In fact, in Coppola's restaurant in Belize, there is the famous dish, "Mrs. Scorsese's Lemon Chicken."

This book makes a lovely contribution to any cookbook collection. In fact, it's the one guests always seem to pull from the shelf and thumb through. My copy, of course, is stained from years of use. There are tomato sauce stains and cheese smudges. The pages are as tasy as the actual dishes themselves.

Enjoy!

Learn Italian!
I have been searching for an easy way to teach my daughter, age 4 who has grown up only speaking english, my native Italian. I have tried various computer programs, books and tapes, and other teaching methods. All were rather boring and unhelpful, my daughter soon lost interest. This system is wonderful! The lessons are interesting and fun. They are blended wonderfully with songs and activities that keep a child's attention. I highly recommend this program. I do recommend that someone in the family practice with the child and participate with them while they listen. This is by far the best children's language packet I've seen.

An engaging and informative program for learning Italian.
My son and I enjoyed the music, activities and games provided in this learning program. The use of children's voices for the cassette was very effective. A great starting point for both children and adults alike.

It would be great to have this program on video.

Great for the young learner.
This book is easy for your youngster - ages 4 - 9 - to learn Italian. Good Instruction Book.

E molto divertente!
We had an informal Italian class for a small group of children in my home this past summer. This book provided hours of fun and games for the kids. It had great ideas to keep the children interested as they traded an afternoon at the local pool for an afternoon learning a foreign language. The price is a bargain and it gave me lots of great ideas. The games reinforce the basics and we'll be using them again and again throughout future classes. For this price, I'd buy two!! Ciao tutti!!!
