Christmas With the Rural Mail

Touching children's story with charming illustrations
A poetic narrative of the delivery of the rural Christmas mail by horse and sleigh in turn of the century Nova Scotia. The naive illustrations by Maude Lewis make the book charming to adults and easily understood by young children. Our two year old requests it again and again.

If you like Diane Farr, Georgette Heyer and Sandra Heath...
Try this marvellous adventure of a set of coach passengers stranded by bad weather. The heroine is a governess travelling to her new post, and short of money. She must borrow her inn expenses from another passenger, a former soldier who has just left the army and who is travelling in his uniform, having nothing else to wear. [OK, that might boggle the imagination but...] Throw in some wonderful travelogue, insights into the other passengers that remind me of Heyer's THE CORINTHIAN (why? you will soon see why?) and of Dicken's THE PICKWICK PAPERS. Yes, there is a villain travelling with the party, but who is the villain. I could write more on this marvellous story, but won't for fear of spoiling it for you.

Warning - there is no physical intimacy (read = bedroom scenes) in this very traditional Regency. Of all the books recommended to me by my reading group, I found this book and the works of Diane Farr the most worthwhile as a slight change from Georgette Heyer.

The book rates a 4.9 in my opinion (comparing it to other Regency romances and Regency historicals that I have read recently). Fantastic story, great setting, and a thrilling adventure. Plus a romance. What else could you want?

A book that changes lives!
Books by John & Mariah Bear have literally changed people's lives. This is no less true for this book. Although not quite the behemoth that the larger "Bears' Guide to Earning Degrees by Distance Learning (14th ed.), this book instead provides a tight focus on specific programs for those who either need a little more guidance or for whom smaller/less expensive works better. It still provides the same solid advice that readers have come to trust from the Bears.

College Degrees by Mail and Internet provides all of the information necessary to earn a degree (BA, MA, PhD) through distance learning. Now in its eighth edition, this book has stood the test of time.

If you're looking to change your life (more money, better work, etc), you need to check this book out.

Excellent presentation of nontraditional higher education
With so much disinformation regarding nontraditional schools offering higher degrees, it's comforting to read a book based in both reality and calmness. No high sales pitch here, just good advice regarding a lot of good, nontraditional schools and programs. Highly recommended.

Excellent book for new Outlook user.
This is an excellent book for new Outlook users or for those who want to get up to speed with Outlook without the fuss. While intended for IMO mode users this book has enough information on Corporate/Workgroup mode to be of benefit to those users. I particularly like the Author's use of Integrated File Management and the emphasis on using Outlook as a "central" application. Must be the first book that has details on using WinFax Starter Edition. A good buy!

Confessions of a Mail Order Bride: American Life Through Thai Eyes
Published in Hardcover by New Horizon Press (1989)
Author: Wanwadee Larsen
Amazon base price: $21.95
Used price: $6.25
Collectible price: $10.95
Average review score:

Very nice book, romantic, and even a surprise ending!
The book is perfect for anyone interested in both Thai culture and what seems to be an objective view of the American way of life. This is not a racy scandalous book if that is what you are looking for. Wanwadee is a conservative Thai who marries a rather typical American man. What an adventure to follow her thoughts as she is confronted with this strange country with its modern culture. I frankly could not put the book down.
The cover is a little misleading as is the title except that she really was a "mail order bride". If you are interested in Thai culture and a bit of romance then you will like the book. The side benefit is we American's get to blush a little when we see ourselves as others see us

Technologically interesting
This book is based on extensive studies of the effects of computer-based communication technology - e-mail, distribution lists, bulletin boards, and computer conferences - through field research as well as social and psychological experiments. Sproull and Kiesler, both I believe trained as experimental social psychologists, believe that computer-based communication is radically changing the ways people interact with one another, much like nineteenth century communications technologies as the telephone, typewriter, and railroad transformed social and business lifestyles. With new computer-based communications, the authors argue, organizations are becoming more flexible and fluid, people increasingly think of themselves as part of the larger organization as opposed to mere members of a single department, and managers are working more democratically with employees.

The early work of this book was basic research on groups, especially on the topics of group dynamics, communication, and decision making. When Reagan was elected president, Kiesler had just come to C.M.U. and the N.S.F. held up her grant on standards setting groups. So, for fun, she began to explore computer networks, the experiments of which "revealed many interesting phenomena, which we eventually wrote about in books and articles--on flaming, electronic group dynamics, changes in decision making and employee participation, and new kinds of teamwork." Connections: New Ways of Working in the Networked Organization, summarizes that research.

Another must have book for MAPI and Exchange
Armed with this book and a copy of 'Inside MAPI' you can begin to unlock the insides of Microsoft Exchange. The book helps to clarify what is an extremely complicated and convoluted system. Without both of these books, any attempts at writing MAPI and Exchange applications is almost certain to fail.

Concise Reference for Managers and Marketers
This is a handy desk reference for marketing folks and the people who work with them. And a great value. Definitions are concise and well-written (but the trade-off is they are sometimes incomplete). Good coverage of trade terms (but marketing academics and researchers might want to look elsewhere).
