Chemical determinism is not enough
The author of this book contributes interesting material on the important biochemicals (dopamine, estrogen, progesterone, LHRH, testosterone, prolactin, oxytocin, and others) that influence and help to regulate the universe we think of as "human sexuality." You will learn more than a few things. It seems that a working knowledge of high levels of testosterone can teach us quite a lot. (Women, proceed with caution!)

Unfortunately, she neglects other factors (and there are so many that make up human choices in love and sex: psychology, for example - and whether or not a couple has a single thing besides the kids to talk about after twenty-five years of marriage) that for me the information loses any authority it might have had.

In addition, she has an ax to subtly grind, and it is that men and women in their fifties (and older) have the very best chance for sexual compatability - for a set of specific chemical and biologically determined reasons. This information would seem to argue for couples staying together, but as we know, there are many other factors beyond sexual compatability (which is often fully present in couples who are literally coming apart - in every other way) that must contribute to couples' happiness - not to mention fidelity.

This book has interesting information about biochemicals' influence on our sex and love lives. You will doubtless recognize yourself and your mate in some of her descriptions, but as science it should be taken with a large grain of salt.

understanding hormones influence in Love
Everyone should read this book before they think they are madly in love. It will help anyone discern whether it is the chemistry of our hormones or real love, or maybe both. In our lives it is often "hard to see the forest for the trees". This would help alot of people avoid making life mistakes.

Chemical Bonding...
The insight of how the range of hormones effects the F/M relationship was wonderful! Hormones is what makes love happen...It explains how these hormones control our thought, how we perform, and the part they play in our associations from birth on up. This book also gives information about Progesterone's and Estrogens and the use of these in Hormone Replacement Therapy. It helps you see and understand the actual chemical bonding which happens between F/M.

BASIC Digital Printmaking
BASIC Digital Printmaking -That should be the title of this book. Perhaps for the amateur photographer who is unfamiliar with basic digital processes. There is so much more that can be done, missed completely by this book.
The book is filled with cheezy Photoshop effects equal to those "star" filters back in the 70's. cheezy, cheezy, cheezy...

Terrific Digital Printmaking Book
While searching out another photography book, I stumbled upon this one and bought it on a whim. What a revelation! I am totally thrilled with the book, the authors' writing, and the info - both aesthetic and concrete - inside. I've had several print b/w darkrooms - bathroom affairs that I've loved - but no longer have the space. I really have missed the print-making experience. Thus Creative Digital Printmaking opened new and exciting doors to me. Even better, it clearly explained how to handcolor digiprints, something I'd done with my b/w images, but never imagined I could do with a digital print.
The book's instructions and explanations are masterful - clear and concise, yet full of exciting techniques. While the book takes the reader on interesting creative journeys, Airey also focuses on the concrete, such as how to calibrate a monitor and the best way to scan a negative or photograph. The combination works. So do the excellent photographic examples. If you have the urge to make digital prints that last and ones that resonate with and excite viewers, this book will guide you on your way. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Practical and inspiring
You can spend weeks following web users groups that discuss specific papers, inks, printers and combinations of archival inks and papers etc. You can subscribe to numerous artists' magazines. But in this book, you can save yourself months, because of Theresa Airey's practical information and lists. The book not only helps photographers looking for quality in printing but it also gives people who hand tint photos good advice with the current lineup of digital materials. From the applications standpoint, I like that this book takes readers from basics to difficult, creative projects. The listings for companies, websites, papers and other media are excellent. Useful, but not Excellent
I found this book to be somewhat useful but not nearly as wonderful as I had hoped. The author is definitely biased [against disposable diapers, which I expected; but she also seems to think that everyone should use a diaper service, or if not, wool diapers/covers. She doesn't seem to give fair judgement to some of the other great products out there].

This author also made home washing of diapers sound MUCH more difficult than it really is [maybe this is because of the bias towards using diaper services?]. If I didn't already know a lot about cloth diapers, I'd be frightened off by her description of laundering. In reality, washing cloth diapers isn't much more difficult than washing the rest of baby's stuff. It certainly doesn't have to be the ordeal described in this book.

The whole book seems very opinionated more than factual, and sometimes the author's tone got on my nerves. That having been said, I found the Product and Resource listing in the last part of the book extremely useful. The only problem is that it is somewhat dated now [I think the book came out in 1997]. Several of the numbers I tried to call that were listed were disconnected at this point.

I'd say this book is worth having for someone who is considering using cloth diapers, but overall it could be much better.

Great starting point for those considering cloth diapers
I purchased this book during pregnancy of my first child. I'd already decided to use cloth diapers and was looking for information to help me make more informed choices. While I still felt a bit overwhelmed after reading the book cover to cover, the book is a must read for familiarizing yourself with the broad spectrum of cloth diapering. There is helpful information on the wide variety of cloth diapers and covers available today, how to care for them, how to use and clean, even how to make your own diapers, etc.

However, I feel that you will still need to spend some time doing your own research and getting opinions from others, such as from an online message board or from the folks that run websites that sell cloth diapers (many of whom are moms with children in cloth diapers). Eveyone's needs are different -- for both the parents and the baby.

The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that there are even more types of diapers than mentioned in the book and some of the references are out of date.

Very handy and informative
I bought this book for my own research on cloth diapering and it has been a great resource! What keeps it from getting the full 5 stars is that I miss some very important brands that really have and will continue to relolutionize the cloth diaper market. But it's still a4+ or a 4,5!
If you are wondering about cloth diapers and how to go about it, this is the book for you.

Useful information. My Dr. told me to buy it.
The book was not hard to read at all. I learned a lot about what I am going through and it explained most of the things I feel. If you do have syndrome X, read this book.

A great Place to Start PCOS research
This is one of three books I have read on PCOS. It is well written and easy to understand. I took it with me to my first visit with a new Doctor and referred to it many times throughout my appointment. Its great reference so you know if your Doctor is ordering the right diagnostic tests and correct treatment. You can get a feel for how "up" your Doctor is on PCOS by reading this book. (If your Doctor doesn't take what you learn from this book seriously, move on to another Doctor!!)

Ms. Cheung refers to and cites the book, "Good News About Woman's Hormones", by Geoffrey Redmond, a great deal. "Androgen" is an easier read, and more specific to PCOS. If you can only buy one book, start with "Androgen" and then get "Good News". "Androgen" eases you into the terminology and how things work and fit together, "Good News" is far more detailed and will build on the "Androgen" book. Both are a "must have".

excellent
I work in this field and so was really pleased to discover a straight forward but detailed account of this very serious problem. This book describes the problems but also offers help. I recommend this book, it is excellent.

outdated
Although there is much practical advice and interesting facts about child development, the overall result is a tired and dated manual. Some of the advice is downright dangerous! The book explored the conflict between putting infants to sleep on their back as opposed stomach. There is a clinically accepted link between Babies sleeping on their stomach and SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrom. There isn't a pediatrition or health nurse on the planet who would recomend putiing an infant to sleep on their belly, let alone give an option between the two.

Understand the development of your babies brain.
My pediatrician recommended it after the birth of my first child. It was fun and fascinating to understand better how my babies brain was developing. I read and reread each chapter. I have bought it as a baby gift for at least ten people.

Far and away the best book to track developmental progress!
I had my first child in 1989 and the book The First Twelve Months of Life (Capland) was an absolute neccessity to track my child's developmental progress. Not only does it tell you what your baby's Gross Motor skills are each month, it also gives you clear and concise information on Fine Motor, Language, Social, and many other developmental skills. I am having my second child shortly and I went shopping for a book that would be as informative and helpful as the book by Capland. I couldn't find one. I ended up getting the same book and I plan on referring to it often.

Wish I hadn't wasted money on it.
Wow! I really wish I had listened to the one reviewer that gave this book one star. It is definitely not as the title suggests. The entire book is about 200 pages that could be summed up in about 5. The author repeats herself so many times I was about to scream. Even the quotations by famous riders (which makes up about 80% of the book) were repeated many times. The book doesn't give you any good rational reason not to fear riding. And I agree with the other reviewer when they said that the book made them more afraid. It makes horses out to be super dangerous horrible beasts that we may have to use in order to achieve our goals. I got no sense of love for horses in this book. The main idea was that if our goal is to become a famous dressage rider then we have to use a horse to get there. And if one horse isn't good enough, "dump it" (exact term from the book), and get a new one. I can tell you right here the whole summary of the book without costing you a penny. Defeating negative thinking, imagining the best case scenario, and determining your goals. That's it. Don't waste your money on this book now because I just told you all there is to it in one sentence!

I'm not alone with my fears!
This was a great book. If you ride buy it now because you either have had a fall or may eventually have one and you will need to know how to get back on your horse and continue to enjoy the experience of riding. This books discusses the fear that I've experienced while the horse I was riding was enjoying itself by just being a horse. It gives very useful techniques on how to deal with the natural fears and concerns of being on top of an animal that at times has its own mind. The interviews with professional riders were very helpful and inspiring. The lessons learned can be applied to life in general. This book is not for those who pretend they don't get nervous at a full gallop but is definitely for those whose adreline surges during the excitement.

Finally, a book for a much-ignored riding population!
Topics include: understanding and using nervous energy, risk management, defeating irrational thinking, the importance of goal-setting, cultivating trust and minimizing fear, riding safety tips, ending with 18 personal case studies of different level riders with different types of fears as well as mental exercises to defeat those fears. The author's goal seems to be for anxious riders to trade their fear in for excitement and meet their riding goals with confidence. This book also features interviews with 12 top riders and how they positively use nervous energy as well as tips you can use. Whether you fear injury, embarrassment, and/or failure while riding, this book will give you the tools you need to conquer your fears and make your riding dreams come true!

Aspartame (neurotoxin) for osteoarthritis?
The example of a man who consumed a six-pack of diet cola and his arthritis improved by the end of the football game he was watching is hard to believe. I was sick for years from consuming only a small amount of diet cola or NutraSweet in such things as Crystal Lite. When I drank the entire can of a 12 oz can of Diet Coke instead of the usual small amount, I became so ill immediately that I had to see a doctor right away.

Good to have on hand if you self-medicate!
If you take any herbal supplements, this might just be a good book to have as a reference. Did you know that taking St. John's wort and antidepressants can cause excess serotonin to be produced resulting in severe agitation, nausea, confusion and possibly even a heart attack? Well, according to a list of drugs that don't mix, that could happen.

The authors suggest you read this book before taking any medications (prescriptions and OTC drugs). You might also want to ask your doctor if there is any medication you should not take with any new prescription drug he gives you. Most pharmacies will give you a list, but more often than not, there is no information on herbal medications or reactions.

Kava Kava can cause sedation if taken with Xanaz or Valium. Xanax and Valium also should never be taken with alcohol or it will cause extreme sedation.

Ginkgo biloba can cause excessive bleeding if taken with Coumadin or Aspirin. Ginseng can increase the potency of estrogen. Echinacea should not be taken with Ketoconazole or methotrexate for more than eight weeks or it will cause liver damage.

If Antibiotics are taken with milk or other dairy products, it may not be fully absorbed and cause the infection to persist.

A great book to help you see what you can and can't take together. Hopefully you will just take Herbs. They usually have less side effects, but you do have to read up about them.

Every home library should have a copy!
After checking out the Graedon's book, we stocked up on a few items as we headed out of town for a weekend camping trip. One of their recommendations is Alka-Seltzer for bee stings. (We had never heard of this!) When one of our daughters was unfortunate enough to cross paths with a bee while identifying wild flowers, we popped a wet Alka-Seltzer on the site of the sting. She was skeptical, but the pain and swelling was completely gone in a few minutes. We won't go anywhere without Alka-Seltzer this summer and a few of the other home remedies they recommend. Excellent! Everybody needs a copy in their home library.

BEWARE: If you bought the Server book, DON'T BUY THIS ONE!
Kinnaman has written truly great books that will prepare you for the MCSE exams, but I feel it is important to reiterate what the gentleman from Oklahoma City said about this book: IT IS A VIRTUAL COPY OF THE SERVER BOOK. Kinnaman tries to cover this up by adding a phrase here and there to sentences, but the book is essentially the same. This begs the question, are the Server and the Server in the Enterprise exams so similar that one can write the same book as a study guide for both? The reason I gave this book one star, even though it may sufficiently prepare you for the Enterprise exam, is that I think either Kinnaman or the publisher (or both) was (were) dishonest in not coming out with a Server/Enterprise combination book, that simply included the few chapters that don't appear in both books into one study guide. He (They) are trying to rip you off.

BTW, the Table of Contents in the Enterprise book is totally screwed up (after the Intro, it starts off on page 77 with Windows 95, skipping Chapters 2 & 3), plus the chapter on Troubleshooting is repeated twice in the Table of Contents)

PS: Can someone write another review that lists the chapters that differ between the Server and the Server in the Enterprise books?

Repeat of NT Server 4.0
I bought this book because I bought the NT Server 4.0 book from these guys (which I would rate 4 or 5 stars). Unfortunlately, except for 1 1/2 chapters, it is the exact same book! So I am sending it back. I have to think there is more to the Enterprise test than what I studied for the Server Test. If not, I guess it would be a good book since I liked the NT Server 4.0 book.

The most helpful book I've found
The Accelerated MCSE series has been an excellent source for exam preparation. After attending classes and on-the-job training, I used this book to put it all together. New Rider and Sybex pale in comparison. This book puts all the concepts together nicely and succinctly. I used this for the general overview and Tom Carter's excellent book on NT to complement Accelerated MCSE.

Rustic but still expensive
For all the talk about architectural principles, green building, etc., his work basically boils down to selling secluded homes to a wealthy few. That said, he has good taste. His houses use stone and wood almost exclusively, and are invariably set in remote wooded locations. Don't expect to learn anything about construction; this is just daydreaming material for most folks.

It's the Only One
A four star book about a five star architect. Wish there were more written about Cutler but this is it. Great introductory purchase into the work of the father of the "Northwest style." Until more is published, this is my Cutler reference. Good color pics. Pencil drawings that are truely Cutler craft.

Very fine book about a very fine architect
This is a very fine book about a very fine architect (from a publisher who's also doing a very good job). James Cutler's work has much more substance than virtually all of his better-known peers. He's concerned about the natural environment and that concern is translated into definite design strategies. He's also very much concerned with the craft of building and he understands that the art of architecture depends on materials and how they're assembled. This concern and understanding is evident in his loving and thoughtful development of details and in his material choices, which are very purposeful. This is not the type of architect who would treat brick the same as sheet metal when the budget wouldn't permit titanium. I think the reviewer who says that this work is "tectonically wacked" misses the boat. I agree that there are some minor oddities but if James Cutler's architecture isn't "tectonic," I don't know what is. I'd be tempted to say his work is all about tectonics if it wasn't also about space, sustainability, humane design, beauty..... I only wish the book were not so compact, but I appreciate the compact price. An important architect who has convictions, designs accordingly, and lets the world of fashion play its games by itself, a million miles away.

Good guide but a bit outdated
I used this book when I moved to Seattle four years ago, and it was extremely helpful in acclimating me. I especially liked the overview of neighborhoods. But, a friend who is moving here just got it, and in checking out her version, I am surprised the data hasn't been updated the past few years. A lot has changed.

Ballard, for example, is not a blue collar neighborhood anymore. It's become quite yuppified and expensive. There are not many housing bargains (rental or ownership) to be had there anymore. There also needs to be updated info on up and coming neighborhoods -- like Columbia City.

I think any book on Seattle needs to address the earthquake hazard. Some neighborhoods are safer than others. For example, the 2001 earthquake made it pretty clear that Pioneer Square, which is built on landfill, isn't where you want to be when the Big One hits (unless you fancy brick showers.) If you have the time, it might be worthwhile to wait for the next edition of this book which will hopefully contain 2000 census stats. And do some more research on the seismic issues-- try to live in a place built on bedrock.

Good Seattle guidebook without too many details
I recently visited Seattle after moving away some 7 years ago. I wanted a book to refresh my memories and to reacquaint myself with the city and whatever changes it has gone through. This book does give a lot of information about the City, and yes, the Eastside communities are not discussed in depth (but, who cares? if you're going to live in the area, Seattle is the place to be!) The data, for me, wasn't enough though. I was looking for even more demographic-type information and couldn't find any other book that came close. The data is from 1996, so things have changed somewhat. With the latest census 2000 data, I would hold out for the next edition of this book, should one be forthcoming. One complaint from me is the graphics. The image of the city is used in many graphics with shaded elements refering to city extremes. These are often hard to decipher and leave many of the areas of the city without coverage. Overall, the book was the best sourcebook of those I found in many of Seattle's great bookstores.

READY TO MOVE TO SEATTLE
THERE WERE SO MANY INTERESTING ITEMS IN THIS BOOK THAT I HAVE A THREE-RING BINDER FULL OF NOTES. I AM DEVOUT TEXAN, BUT SINCE THE FIRST TIME I VISITED SEATTLE I HAVE WANTED TO MOVE THERE. THIS BOOK MADE IT EVEN MORE APPEALING. EVERYTHING IS DISCUSSED FROM THE NEIGHBORHOODS TO THE CRIME STATISTICS. THIS IS A MUST FOR SEATTLE RESIDENTS AS WELL AS THOSE THAT WISHED THEY WERE.
