Best book out of 3 shelves of health care books
Absolutely fantastic, must-have book! I have over 7 years of experience using holistic medicine for my family and 3 bursting shelves of health-care books. Whenever anyone in the family is sick, this is the first book pulled out for reference. I've given it to 5 mothers-to-be as baby shower presents, and whether they use conventional medicine or alternative medicine, they always rave about how much this book has helped them. I know one RN who bought a copy for each of her 5 adult children, she was so impressed with the quality and quantity of information it provided.

Be your child's BEST health advocate with this awesome book!
Written by a medical doctor, a naturopath and a pediatric nurse, this comprehensive A-to-Z quick reference guide gives you what you need, when you need it, without having to waste any time wading through all the fluff.

At-a-glance options for the most common childhood ailments are provided, along with a guide to common symptoms, dosage guidelines for herbs and nutritional supplements and of course the huge yet easy to navigate A-to-Z listing. Excellent suggestions for each illness are provided in 9 different categories of healthcare:

Conventional Treatment
Dietary Guidelines
Nutritional Supplements
Herbal Treatment
Homeopathy
Acupressure
Bach Flower Remedies
General Recommendations
Prevention

I pass by all the others on my bookshelves and never fail to find just what I need in this wonderfully written and thorough compilation. Between my conservative, conventional husband and my own more holistic instincts, Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child greatly pleases and helps BOTH of us.

With 470 oversized pages, this tome is HUGE and a great bargain even at the full ... retail price. I can't tell you how thrilled I was when this book arrived in the mail! In addition to the main meat of the book, the authors thoughtfully provide a plethora of other helpful information to assist you in caring for your child, divided into three separate and neatly organized chapters.

Part One: The Elements of Healthcare
You'll get the basics (and then some) on all of the above listed 9 categories of healthcare ' history of each method, how and why they work, common treatments and how to administer them properly. There is even a ten-page section on pregnancy and your newborn as well as a helpful checklist for assembling a comprehensive home health kit.

Part Two: Common Childhood Health Problems
The nitty gritty of this book which features the A-to-Z listing and suggestions.

Part Three: Therapies and Procedures
So you might possibly be interested in using acupressure to help your child who keeps wetting the bed, but have no idea how to properly do this. This section of the book will give you brief instructions along with an illustrated chart of common acupressure points on a child's body. You'll also find other helpful information such as CPR procedures and illustrations for infants and children, first aid for choking, how to prepare herbal treatments (baths, teas, ointments, tinctures, etc.), relaxation techniques for your child, and more. The small section at the end of this chapter, on 'time outs', is the only part of the book that I do not fully agree with or recommend. The rest of the book is so incredibly valuable that it is easy for me to simply overlook these one and a half pages.

At the end of the book you will find a helpful glossary, a chart of common medical abbreviations, a guide to recommended suppliers, a listing of resource organizations and even a listing of toll-free hotlines on a number of parenting issues.

An excellent companion to this book is 'A Parent's Guide to Medical Emergencies: A quick and easy-to-use handbook to the most common childhood accidents', written by the same trio of authors/experts and presented in the same easy A-to-Z format. Between these two books, my husband and I have become deeply educated about our son's health and have never felt more confident about the choices we are making on his behalf. If you are an involved parent, Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child is one of the best resources you will ever get your hands on!

Hands down - the best gift for any new parent.
Calling all Parents: Today's allopathic world of modern medicine can be overwhelming and excessive for our children. Side-effects from even over-the-counter relief medications can be devastating. The greatest gift you can give to your children is health, and this does not come from doctors, it comes from you and your knowledge. This is simply the best book to help you understand the basics of just about any childhood illness. Where doctors are limited to one kind of medicine, this guide gives you a great advantage in diversity of treatments, from allopathic to naturopathic. Strengthen your childrens immune system and treat their illnesses through the use of nutrition, herbs, homeopathic remedies, and accupressure. Learn about your children and yourself and empower yourself with the knowledge of the healing arts. THE PERFECT GIFT FOR ANY PARENT!

Texas Cowboy Cooking
Texas Cowboy Cooking by Tom Perini arrived yesterday. It is a cookbook that makes you want to jump up and make the recipes as you are turning the pages of the book. We have already tried the Cowboy Bloody Mary, Lisa's Favorite Caesar Salad, the seasoned olive oil for the Sourdough Bread Chips to use as croutons for the salad and are in the process of making the Sourdough Starter for the Sourdough Bread. It's the best Caesar Dressing that we've tried and the croutons are very good.

The historical information is good and has added color to this cookbook. It is not Texas boastful--simply well done. We plan on giving it as Christmas gifts to family members who have visited us here in Abilene, Texas.

Cowboy Culture & Cuisine!
Since we frequent Perini's Steakhouse, we know Tom's award-winning cuisine first-hand! His cookbook is a "no-holds barred" approach... giving ALL of his famous recipes from his unbeatable steak rub to green chile hominy to his signature bread pudding with whiskey sauce!

In addition to fabulous recipes, the book also showcases wonderful photography depecting life in West Texas. Sidelines feature insights into several famous Texas ranches.

Your cookbook collection shouldn't be without this book! It is one you will be sure to use often!

Texas Cowboy Cooking
The book would be a welcome addition to any cookbook library, but we don't think you will be content looking at this book on a shelf. Our guess is the purchaser will find the book being used over and over. There is a wonderful variety of recipes from which to choose, whether preparing a meal for family or friends from the neighboring ranches or, shoot, if you happen to live in a city then this type of cooking is sure to please. Over the years we have been fortunate to enjoy many pounds of prime rib cooked the Perini way with the flavor of the beef drawn out with his Texas Herb Rub found on page 85, cooked over mesquite coals and served with some of the delicous recipes that can be found in the side dishes section, followed by Tom's bread pudding with whiskey sauce found on page 173, leaves me hoping others will be so fortunate. In additon to recipes, the book is filled with ranch photographs taken by a well-known rancher/photographer and the food photography is stunning. Also the information about historic ranches, ranch cooking and the old photographs will be fascinating to anyone with an interest in real Texas food told by a man who is now sharing great food ideas with you.

A Thoughtful Analysis of Martial Arts in America
This book discusses a variety of topics that most martial artists find that they need to address at some point in their martial arts careers. It begins by discussing motivations for training and then covers such topics as the "evolutionary cycle of combat arts", kata, the metaphysical, selecting a school, modern training methods/techniques and women in the martial arts. It is well written and provides the reader with the insights and conclusions that Mr. Orlando has arrived at after 30+ years in the martial arts. There are helpful pictures and interesting or amusing illustrations.

I think that the person who will benefit the most from this book, in general, is relatively new to the martial arts. This book would be invaluable for giving the newer martial artist food for thought as well as some very practical advice that could be immediately applied. I also think that some classically trained martial artists may find the ideas in the book a bit intriguing and perhaps challenge their ways of thinking. There is a lot of good stuff in this book.

However, I think that the more experienced martial artist, who has already spent considerable time exploring various martial arts, and himself, may not find a lot of new ideas in the book. I bought this book based on a post that was done on a martial art mailing list and the various positive reviews on Amazon. While the book is very well done, I simply did not find it that interesting because I had already personally dealt with most of the issues that he discusses (and come to many of the same conclusions). The book is relatively short and easy reading so I did read the entire book; however for me personally it was a bit of a let down (after reading all of the great reviews) because there was not much I could take out of it. For example, I already train with shoes on, I switched from "classic" blocking/striking motions to more "modern" applications, I have studied internal & external arts and I know what to look for in a good training hall - therefore these (and other) sections did not tell me a lot that I did not already know.

I am not saying to rule out the book simply because you have a lot of experience in the arts. My advice is that you try to look through the book before purchasing to determine if there is something in it for you. I can certainly see where this book might change the way you think about martial arts (also evidenced by the reviews here), but it is not for everyone.

One other item that I think worth commenting on is that the book reads a bit a like a compilation of short articles with a common theme. Nothing wrong with that - just something to be aware of. In fact, making this point reminds of a book that I enjoyed, called Moving Toward Stillness (which actually is a collection of articles by Dave Lowry). This book takes nearly an opposite theme from Mr. Orlando's - ie. Mr. Lowry is a proponent of the preservation of ancient Japanese arts in their original forms. Although I lean more toward Mr. Orlando's way of thinking about martial arts in America, Mr. Lowry's book gave me a new appreciation for preserving certain things that I previously would have thought silly to preserve. Therefore, I highly recommend that you consider Mr. Lowry's book in addition to this volume for a more balanced view of preservation versus innovation.

East Meets West
This book, cleverly written by Bob Orlando, is an enjoyable read. The book is humorous at times because of his witty style, yet always serious and shedding light on this topic of martial arts. He effectively writes about the differences between the traditional martial arts and the "western" approach, which emphasis on combat effectiveness and sport. The book can also be read by someone who has never studied the arts. He doesn't use a lot of "karate jargon." When he does use an unfamiliar term, he gives a quick definition.

He has also mixed photographs and artwork into the book which gives it an extra flavor. The artwork is multifaceted; serioous, humorous, and at times, reverenced. Most topics are discussed: Sport karate, kata, combat fighting, and how to find a good school. Instructors will benefit from this book as well as he speaks about many innovative topics as developed in the western world.

Martial Arts America
Bob Orlando's book Martial Arts America is about how Eastern martial arts are adapted or should be adapted in the West and more specificly the US. This book has many good examples and suggestions for adapting Eastern martial arts. For example Orlando talks about how modern safty equipment changed the way most people train today as compared with how training was conducted in the past. Orlando also talks about where some of the traditions of the martial arts came from and why they are what they are. He also talks about why some of them should be changed. I don't agree with everything Orlando says but I agree with the underlying arguement of the book that Eastern martial arts must be adapted to the culture that they are transported too. This book is thought provocing and should be read by students and instructors alike.

F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C!!!
This book does to college football what Pavarotti did to opera. The authors have captured the essence of tailgaiting, partying, and eating Chinese food in the back of a rundown limo. Reading this book is like being on tour with the authors...What's next? Movie? Play? Book on college tennis? I can't wait to read their next work.

What a book
This book is truly amazing. what is better then reading a book about football, college and saturdays. a must read

I have seen heard the voice of god and its name is waldo
For a shoeless, candy eating, office leeching guy, Bob Waldstein is an am amazing author. I was absolutely amazed by how well these two authors both wrote an excellent depiction of their journeys across the country and made fun of themselves at the same time. I do not beleive anyone could have "hit the nail on the head" any better than these two have. I would like to meet these two great men at some point in my life. These men truly are college football gods. I can't wait to read the sequel. I would love to have a college basketball madness book in my library.

Unbelievable
Okay, I'm not into poetry, but this book is one of my favorite books ever. Lots of different voices, so there is will be someone who will put to words your experience. But the most interesting poems are the ones where the author is coming from different space and the messages still cut through. No cliches here.

beautiful, honest, beautiful, beatific
i was shocked by the enormous beauty contained in the words - the simple english, spanish, or hybrid mixture words - how much emotion, how much skin and sweat can be placed within them. i am a poetry fan, but what i like is particular and peculiar. the poetry in this book speaks to and about human beings in the honest, skin-blood-bones-organs-nerves way that i feel has not been captured since the Beats. while i love sylvia plath, this poetry contains none of the almost ascetic, sterile, abstraction of most poetry, poetry like how you think "british" when you think poetry. this is tactile poetry, and though one may not personally relate to the writer, one would hope (I would hope) that the reader can relate to the words as they are placed, the emotion invoked and evoked by the words-plus-tone, by the very act of those very particular words placed together to create this poetry. this is where appreciation lies. this is where poetry is. this is turning feeling and thought and experience into sounds and words - into poetry.

Poetry Bible
This has got to be the best anthology around. So many different styles of poetry. It has become my favorite book in my entire collection. I have given this book to freinds who swear they hate poetry and have changed their whole outlook on the art.I first read this 4 years ago and it inspired me to pick up my pen (after not writing for almost ten years) and make my voice heard

Discovering the World of Shakespeare
Hamlet's Dresser is Bob Smith's memoir about his life going up with a severely retarded sister, a detached father, and overwrought mother. He tells of his escape of this environment and lonely childhood when he discovers the language and world of William Shakespeare.

It is not a book about Bob Smith's devotion to his sister, but his endeavor to escape the confines of his sister even though he loved her very much. The main aspect of the book was his intertwining of Shakespearian passages in describing his past life and his present life when he teaches the elderly the wonders of the Bard. This in itself really opens up so many facets of how he felt. He is the Hamlet of his life and his mother is Lady MacBeth with his sister being Ophelia.

Though his writing is rather florid at times, this is an amazing first book by Mr. Smith. Without the Shakespearian prose interspersed throughout the passages, it might have been just another memoir, but Mr. Smith has turned it into a book that flows. The reader can even start comparing aspects of their own life with Shakespeare just as the elderly do in his classes.

Read it and compare it with your own life.

Breathtaking -- surprisingly so.
A professor friend of mine recommended this book to me. She had read a review in the Washington Post. Normally, I nod politely at such recommendations and go about reading whatever else it is that was already on my wish list. But, for some reason, I went out and bought this book.
I read it on the plane and, to my great embarrassment, found that I had to put the book down in my lap several times and take deep breaths, lest the other passengers see the tears welling in my eyes.
Bob Smith is a man I didn't know of before picking up the book. I didn't expect to care about his memoir. What I found is that I ended up caring very deeply and simply could not put it down until I'd finished it. To say that it is a moving book is an understatement. Somehow, Mr. Smith touches on all of life and love and loss and hope and well --- humanity. Perhaps it is because he weaves into his tale the timeless wisdom found in Shakespeare. And he does so masterfully.
By reading this memoir, you will learn about life, yourself, Shakespeare, and what it means to be human.

A real treat for anyone who grew up loving the theatre.
This was the most enjoyable book I've read in quite some time. A rare and wonderfully detailed account of one young man's coming of age in Stratford, Connecticut. Not your standard sexual awakening tales. No, this is a story of a spiritual awakening - a discovered kinship with Shakespeare and the Muses of comedy and tragedy. Bob Smith tells his story with compassion, wit and elegance. He doesn't shy away from the troubling memories of dealing with a mentally impaired sibling, nor the profound impact she had on his life and the lives of his parents. What the reader is left with is a sure sense of the authors humanity. His Shakespeare classes for senior citizens - the special relationships and bonds that he has nutured with lovers of The Bard - those famous and those seemingly forgotten about. Bob Smith's story is inspiring on many levels. However, the greatest gift this book gives us is a beautiful articulation of the awe and wonder that can only be found in the thaetre.

Insightful study of one of history's greatest generals
While the text itself is somewhat dry and analytical, this rates as one of the great studies of military tactics and provides a facinating glimpse into the mind of one of history's great generals. Attacks! is Rommel's first person account of his experiences in WWI. As was his custom, he recorded his military exploits and summarized his findings for his own personal study and the benefit of those military students to follow. Anyone interested in gaining insight into Rommel himself or interested in what makes a great platoon/company level commander should read this book.

A Treatise on Maneuver Warfare by One Who Knew How to Do It
This book covers Erwin Rommel's First World War experiences, from August 1914 to November 1917. Rommel served in interesting areas: France 1914-5, Romania 1916-7 and Italy 1917. The book was written in 1937 and is less a memoir than a manual on infantry operations. There is very little human detail. Nor is there any analysis of the big picture (Rommel was only a battalion commander by 1917). German troops are made to look invincible; the French, Italians and Romanians are depicted as second-rate. Rommel was a very aggressive mountain infantry officer and won the Pour le Merit in the Caporetto offensive. The tone is subtlety braggadocio. Rommel's style was overly aggressive and similar to Caesar's in the Balkans and Egypt: bold thrusts and pursuits with handfuls of troops which sometimes got Rommel into some very tight spots. He was almost killed or captured on several occasions. Note, the tactical lessons are too narrow to draw useful conclusions from other than: dig in whenever you stop, conduct reconnaissance while the main body rests/prepares and never stop pursuing a beaten foe. Logistics was evidently not one of Rommel's strengths and would later hurt him in Africa. Excellent sketch maps for most major actions. When I visited the Caporetto area in 1996 I brought Rommel's book and was easily able to relate the sketch maps to the terrain.

Small Group Leadership at its Best!
Rommel's Attack is a great first person account on the activities of a junior military officer, trained on the concept of problem solving and overcoming the obstacles that he finds as he accomplishes the task that present themselves to him during combat in the Great War. In a war that has been defined as a defensive engagement, Rommel is consistently able to overcome these defenses, attack effectively, and achieve his objectives. This book is a great account on one military officers utilization of his leadership ability, coupled with the effective incorporation of those around him into an effective fighting organization. Rommel also incorporates numerous sketches of troop movements, obstacles overcome, and his battle plan intentions that add to the readers ability to learn from these writings. While many see warfare of today as much different from that of the Great War, it is important to remember that conflict still requires one group to overcome another and the thought process utilized by Rommel (and explained in this book) is still as useful today as it was then. This is a excellent book for those interested in then military, but should also be a must read for those who work with others at difficult task or objectives.

A Gift in Words From A Living Legend
If you are a fan of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, then this book is something you probably can't wait to read. If you are a poor soul who has never sat down and listened to "Live at Carnegie Hall"...well you'd better get busy. You have a lot of reading and listening to do, and I envy you for it. This book is simply beautiful to read. Mr. Clancy has the Irish way with words in the truest sense, and its a wonder he waited so long to begin a literary career (I always enjoyed his liner notes!) The story of his life and career is well worth reading to fans of his music and to fans of good memoir writing as well. Read this book and you will feel as though Mr. Clancy is speaking only to you. He evokes memories of family, home, and childhood with amazing grace and ease. In addition, be sure to get the reissue of his solo album "Liam Clancy" which is availble from this site. God bless the Clancy Brothers!

NONFICTION

THE MOUNTAIN OF THE WOMEN: Memoirs of an Irish Troubadour by Liam Clancy, read by the author (Random House Audio). Irish folk musician Clancy masterfully recounts more than "40 years of acting, singing and great foolishness" with a powerful, melodic voice and guileless magnetism.

A Long Way from Tipperary
Liam Clancy portrays a poignant, honest, and sometimes irreverent portrait of the life of a young man growing up in the Ireland of the 40s and 50s. His prose is as lyrical as his music, sprinkled with laughter and pathos.

I read, and understood his struggle living in a country of which he said had one foot in the twentieth century and the other in the Middle Ages. From provincial Ireland to the fast pace of New York's Greenwich Village in an era of coffee houses, folk singers, booze and (Playboy) bunnies, the multi-talented Liam Clancy comes out a survivor, unapologetic and charming.

My only problem with this book is that it ended too soon.

Will we be treated to a sequel, Mr. Clancy?

Absolutely Incredible!!!
This has to be one of the most powerful works on eliminating gossip ever published! This little book is packed with solid information on how to transform your life in an area that isn't typically associated with being harmful -- our discussion of others. Until this book, one could have thought that gossip is not that serious...after all, everyone does it right? This book demonstrates in simple terms that speaking ill of others is a life-robbing insidious cancer that may in fact be popular but it does not in any way support prosperity. If you want to change your life instantly, if you want more freedom, fulfillment, money or peace, get a copy of this book for yourself. Then get a copy for every person that you love. Together you all will harness the power of ending gossip in your lives. Just learning how to do this one thing, each of you will immediately increase your individual levels of happiness, and you'll never experience life the same way again. Thank you Lori Palatnik and Bob Burg for authoring all of us into empowerment. With this book you have given us a blueprint for changing this world one person at a time! This is not just a book, it isn't even a mission. This soul transforming work is an entire movement of which we can all take part!

Superb Book On A Relevant Topic
If you have the bad habit of gossiping, or if you're around people who do, this is a must read!

Perhaps Charlie "Tremendous" Jones, a noted speaker and author, put this book in its proper perspective with his cover testimonial: "It took only a few pages for me to ask God to forgive me."

Using "10 Pathwways Of Positive Speech" as their framework, the authors offer practical ways to overcome gossip, and insightful tips for discouraging others from speaking negatively about others.

I loved the chapter on The Reverse Gossip Game. The reader is encouraged to "repeat only the good people say" versus "telling people the gossip said about them or others." But the gem of this book is found in the closing chapter. "The Best Story Ever" is a classic example of why we should guard our mouths wherever we are.

Don't let this 146-page book deceive you into thinking it isn't profound enough. Each of the 18 chapters is packed with useable information that can transform your life--and the people around you by the example you set.

Put an end to gossip by learning from, and acting on, the wise advice found in this remarkable resource.

Profound And Life Changing!
I feel the principles of Gossip: Ten Pathways To Eliminate It From Your Life And Transform Your Soul, will impact and mean a great deal to many people; and I can recommend it highly. I know it changed my life in a very profound and positive way as soon as I started to read the book and implemented the principles that are taught so well.

Recently, I was able to use the principles I learnt from reading Gossip, at work. It came as a shock that on my first day at a new job, I would be privy to evil speech, i.e., gossip, from my new team mates about people not only in our department but in other departments as well. Thanks to the principles of the book, however, I was able to over come the gossip feast by remembering and practicing what I had learnt. I felt better for it, knowing that I could refrain from joining in or even listening to the gossip around me.

Enjoy reading Gossip: Ten Pathways To Elimate It From Your Life And Transform Your Soul. Enjoy not only the difference it will make in your life but also in the lightness of your soul.
