Funny and Sobering!
This book shows how foolish people have been in their quest for cures from disease and perfect health. The sad part is that it's still going on all around us and people are absolutely serious about it. Except now it's called "alternative medicine" and the government is spending taxpayers' dollars on it. Hilarious indeed!

Quaint, preposterous, and horrifying medical devices
Quack!: Tales Of Medical Fraud From The Museum Of Questionable Medical Devices is an informative and fascinating compendium of quaint, preposterous, and occasionally horrifying medical devices foisted upon the public by calculating charlatans and misguided medical practitioners. Some of these purveyors held the public's rapt attention for a time (Albert Abrams, who believed that all that was needed from a patient was a drop of blood, a single hair, or a handwriting sample which gave off a "vibration" that could be used for diagnosis and treatment, was promoted by Upton Sinclair in "Pearson's" magazine), while others were simple snake-oil vintage conmen whose tactics were to "hit and run". Profusely illustrated with photographs of odd medical mechanism, period advertisements, and newspaper clippings of the day, Bob McCoy (curator of the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices) offers a full-spectrum, very highly recommended survey of American medical quackery from the Prostate Gland Warmer to the Recto Rotor, the Nose Straightener to the Wonder Electric Generator.

A cure for all that ails you!
The long wait ends for a modern book on quack medical devices! The quality is everything one might hope for and more. Excellent quality, and highly entertaining.

A Loving Review of the Life of High Henry
One of my memories of Hank Aguirre is his pitching in relief of the first major league game I saw in Detroit in 1958. After completing a game in Yankee Stadium in which Al Kaline broke his collar bone to make a diving catch to win the game the headline read "Tigers Find A Starter But Lose A Star", the Tigers found they had a legitimate starting pitcher for their staff. Hank's inability as a hitter are legendary, but the author spends a great deal of time on Hank's humanitarian efforts on behalf of Hispanic minorities in the Detroit area. His business efforts were ultimately successful, but the time spent away from his family took its toll. People are remembered for what they give, and Hank gave of himself to others. This is a very easy to read book, and one that would be beneficial to high school libraries even though the name of Hank Aguirre is an unknown to them.

rings with truth, no hyperbole. a fascinating life! a must!
i was fascinated by the title itself. the tall mexican should be a must read for all minorities who struggle under the lash of predjudice. i thought i was going to read a story about baseball, but discovered TTM is a story of hope and of love for our fellowman that goes beyond the ordinary into the realm of the spiritual. Hank Aguirre was, pure and simple, a giant of a man whose work for other Hispanics made him an apostle for the underpriviledged -

An inspirational story of sharing the American Dream.
Bob Copley paints a vivid and moving picture of a man who showed us all how to be better human beings. Hank Aguirre was no more perfect than the rest of us, and that made him the perfect role model for real people. He had talent and determination and compassion and he parlayed those qualities for the benefit of those less fortunate than himself. Aguirre showed us all how to be better managers and better citizens and better friends. Copley's biography brings us into the world of Hank Aguirre and allows us to experience life as a friend, neighbor, and colleague of Aguirre. And as such, in the end, we grieve Hank's untimely passing with the same sadness. Hank's legacy lives on, through his family and through all of us who are willing to share our blessings and opportunities with others. The Tall Mexican lets Hank Aguirre continue to provide a powerful role model for generations to come. Share it with your children.

What a Wonderful World

What a wonderful book!
This is a fantastic book! My six and three year old children are already on their second copy - we wore out the first! Both of my daughters love to read it - actually sing it - over, and over, and over. They're fascinated by the pictures as well.

Of course, once they learned to sing the song, it was so easy to introduce them to the music of Louis Armstrong. This book was the perfect bridge. Now my six year old asks me to play "Lewis" for her when we're in the car.

Ultimately soothing
I first saw this book being read/sung to the children in my preschooler's class. I purchased the book for my son and to my amazement,my 1 year old LOVED it as well. The illustrations are bright and captures my baby's attention, he'll sit and "read" the book for minutes! Now, whenever my kids are starting to "meltdown" all I have to do is start singing the song and they both immediately search out this book!

What a Wonderful World
The lyrics to the song, "What a Wonderful World" by David Weiss and Bob Thiele come to life as Ashley Bryan imagines a wonderful world and creates this image in the form of a puppet show. Through the puppet show and the bright colorful illustrations the young audience is captured and can easily relate. It is a great book for young children! It is a book of hope for children and the world!

Note to teachers: This book is great for teaching diversity. Use the book and set it to the music of Louis Armstrong. The children will love it and adults will be moved. Let your children create props for their own puppet show or let children illustrate the book and put together for a class book. Then use Louis Armstrong's music again with the children's class book.

A GREAT BOOK BY THE FIRST FAMILY OF FITNESS
This is an excellent book for beginners and hard-core fitness gurus alike. The book covers all the basics of health, fitness, and well-being. I can never get enough of Mark and Julie. The stories about their careers and the people they have worked with is fantastic. Their conversion to the power of strength training and the "how to" portions of the book can't be beat. This book is filled with great photos and the wealth of knowledge the authors have gained through out their lives. No where can you find the cardio-vascular part of fitness explained so well and made so simple. This book is a must have.

A REAL book!
It's for real. You have two world-class athletes - not bodybuilders or celebrities or fitness models, but two of the fittest people in the world here.

What makes this book different? (1) The Allens recognize that most people have other priorities in life, such as jobs and kids, and therefore can't live in the gym for 2 or 3 hours a day. (2) They also recognize - unlike many athletes - that not everyone shares their passion for their sport. They don't expect you to open this book wanting to do an Ironman of your own as they've done, but they won't discourage you from training for one either!

The book is loaded with sound, honest advice, tips, encouragement and motivation. If you want to get fit, well, you have to work at it. They're not trying to sell you seminars or supplements or some 'magic bullet' that only slims your wallet. They're not trying to relive past glory days either - the anecdotes are purposeful: meant to instruct and/or motivate.

There's several different 18-week workouts here, depending on your goals. All of them offer a balance between cardio (ANY cardio - not just running/swimming/cycling) and weight training. During the week, most workouts are about 30 minutes to an hour, with a longer one on the weekends, and an optional one for the true weekend warrior. Plus, the Allens offer plenty of suggestions for squeezing fitness into a busy schedule for full-time employees and full-time moms.

This isn't another feel-good-because-you-showed-up 'exercise' book. This book is for people who are serious about trying to raise their level of fitness, no matter what shape they're currently in.

I also strongly recommend reading it thoroughly for some of the nuggets hidden inside. For example, 5-6 small meals, each about the size of your two palms held together. An easy visual guide to portion sizes that you always have with you! How can you lose? Or better still, how can you not?

Excellent!
This book is direct & simple: You need to do significant work to see significant results. The Allens are not trying to sell you supplements or seminars or quick-fixes; they just pool their considerable experience to tell it like it really is.

It's not a book you can quickly skim for 'sound bites,' nor should you. If you try, you'll miss nuggets like "5-6 meals a day, each the size of your two palms held together." Now *that* I can visualize!

Although 1.5 to 2-hour workouts may not suit everyone's lifestyle, the Allens make several practical suggestions for fitting fitness into REAL life. Unlike authors who are 'trainers to the stars', these people recognize that most of us don't have fully adjustable, personal-trainer-on-demand kinds of lifestyles with huge spans of free time between gigs.

The weight training is uncomplicated and targets all the major muscle groups. This book also offers more cardio emphasis than most in a progressive, realistic and safe program. But don't be fooled. "Safe" in this book does NOT mean "unchallenging." Not from world-class athletes like these!

This book is worth every penny - especially if you USE it.

She was a lady of true beauty
An excellent book which pays tribute to a beautiful attractive lady. What is especially sad is the fact that Mr.Willoughby had been with this beautiful actress from the start, and was able to follow her career and her personal life with never before seen pictures.I agree with Mr.Willoughby-I miss her too.

"Paris..." galore!
My favorite Audrey movie is "Paris When It Sizzles," so I was floored when I saw how many FANTASTIC pictures from the making of the film this book shows. Previously, I didn't think they existed. Bob Willoughby is a gifted photographer and I am delighted to have this book, not only as an Audrey fan, but as a movie and photography enthusiast as well. Wonderfully compiled and shot!

Great addition to your collection
This book is full of great images that cfome to life. the narrative that is woven along the book adds a very personlized touch to the photographs one is viewing. The artistict quality of each picture is essential to the portrayal of both actress and photographer. This book is a great addition to any collection.

Excellent
This book is good I love dean smith. He's smart and a kind man that helped me with basketball. He's my hero, I think that dean is smart at good ball basket. The secret was hard to learn, but wit the help of this book I learned the secret of basketball, now i too have a big nose.

Great book
This book is a must for all coaches. It explains the Carolina system. Which history has proven has been a good system. The book explains alot. It answers questions that you have not even thought of yet. The special section by Bob Spear of the Air Force Academy was wonderful. It explained the shuffle offense to perfection. If you are a coach and looking for an offense to run, read this section on the shuffle. You will like this offense and all the variations that are well explained in this section. The one thing that could be explained more is the famed Carolina 4 corners. They could have discussed it more, and given more examples of how it works. That is the only negative of the book. The motion offense and it's rules are explained in great detail. If you are looking for a zone offense, take a look at the triple post offense. The different defenses are explained very well. Smith's famous run and jump defenses are diagrammed and explained in great detail, along with their other defenses This book shows you how you can set up your style for your team. I am constantly referring back to this book during the season.

Easy to read--and memorize!
My 2 1/2-year-old loves this book and was soon "reading" it back to me! Its simple rhymes relate a story of generosity and thoughtfulness. We read it every day for weeks, and return to it frequently after 4 months. Paperback version is not sturdy, though--pages fell out after repeated reading.

A Fable For Today
This is one of my favorite books. It is so simple and beautifully told, gently imparting an important message of selflessness. It is a modern fable. Each page is an amusing "chapter" to an adventure with a gratifying surprise ending. I love how the author respects kids' ability to be kind and creative without the prodding of adults. The illustrations, painstakingly, gorgeously rendered in cut paper, are facinating. Like the story, the pictures are a celebration of a conscientious approach to life.

great book about giving
what a wonderful book. I love the illustrations and the rhyming text. My 2 1/2 year old son (also named Benny!) loves to hear this book over and over. He has many parts memorized, too. It is nice to read a book in which the main character, who could easily spend the money on himself, finds something for his mother, brother, sister, cat, and dog, spending one of his five new shiny pennies on each of them. He gets nothing for himself, except many "thank you"s and that great feeling of giving!

Your the man Sing
After looking at all the JINI books available except the O'Reilly one, I found this book to be best....by far!
If you want to learn peer to peer computing, start with this book at page one and read all the way through...you will not be dissapointed.
It has everything, great on code...it will show you how to code JINI, philosophy, ideas, implementations etc...

Sing...when are you going to publish again??? You are great!
If you do, I hope its a topic that I need..

Thanks
- Adam

Lots of material and code
I used this book in parallell with other books.

Chapters on networking and RMI were very useful.

It helped me to understand Jini, though I got a lot of help reading other textbooks in parallell.

Issues on agent techonology were very interesting.

A complete, detailed, well-written book
Mr. Li starts out with a section focusing on advanced RMI and CORBA, and how they relate to Jini. The CORBA section includes examples for building a Java client/server using the ORB that comes with the JDK, as well as using a C client on Linux with the free ORBit ORB. An excellent overview of CORBA for people who have never used it or simply haven't used it with Java.

His writing is detailed, explaining how things are done and why they're done that way; after reading this book you will have an excellent understanding of Jini. For example, the detailed discussion and the several examples on UDP multicast and how it is used in the Discovery protocol was quite fascinating. I found the case study chapters, accounts of real-life applications of Jini and JavaSpaces, to be very interesting to read as well.

Overall, an inforative, highly readable book aimed at advanced developers.

Intense reading
This collection of interviews with Flanagan and his wife along with some of his creative work is a great tribute to a man who had so much to overcome and did it in a way that most of society could not understand. It would have been easy for someone to give up or to become self focused, but Flanagan used his body and his mind to push himself, push his illness, and try to educate the rest of the world about his struggle and about kink. A lot of what is written and shown will disturb you, it should distrub you, but you'll walk away thinking he was a very brave man.

Super-masochist is super straightforward
Meet Bob Flanagan, devoted SM enthusiast and cystic fibrosis patient. Andrea Juno and V. Vale collected a series of intervies with Flanagan and his partner/mistress Sheree Rose about his life and their alternative lifestyle choices. Flanagan is a poet, writer, performance artist and musician, along with trying to create a 24/7 submissive and masochistic life scenario with Rose, all while trying to survive the ever increasing damage to his lungs and body from cystic fibrosis. He fights his pain with pain, and overall, has a very powerful, rich life. The presentation of such intense erotic detail comes across as natural and normal in the relaxed conversations of Vale and Juno with Flanagan, his friends and family.

Bob. What a guy.
Bob was definately out there. And that's coming from a musician who lives in NY. The mold was certainly destroyed when he was made.

My Daughter Loves This Book
My daughter is now 20 months, but has loved it since she was 6 months.

One of our favorites!
My daughter loves Veggietales and especially the whole Educational Series that they came out with including, Shapes, Colors, Opposites, etc. They are catchy with their fun rhymes and rhythms, bright colors, and familiar friends. If you want good clean fun, education, and further imparting good Christian values...VeggieTales are a way to go.

A+ book for kids
I bought this book for my nephew. He loved the Veggies and we've been trying to tach him the alphabet. Now that he's had his book a couple of months he is learning his alphabet with Bob, Larry, and all the Veggie Tales Friends! I highly reccomend this book to anyone who has children. Not only is it entertaining to see you favorite cartoon friends in a book but this is also a very educational book that teaches your child the alphabet and to read.
