This is must have Model Railroading Book
I purchased this book about a year and a half ago. I must pick it up at least three to four times a week. The realism of Mr. Allen's skill as a model railroader is nothing short of extradinoary. The pictures of his work are amazing. This is the best Model Railroading book I have ever read, and my preference is O guage not HO.

Model Railroading with John Allen
I have an original edition of this book by Mr. Westcott and John Allen's work goes far beyond the model railroad it depicts. Mr. John Allen was one of the great masters of Photography and art. This is a book on light and color and texture as well as model railroading.
I bought a copy for a friend in England who is also a master of the arts. Highly recommended both for the text and the ideas!

Magnificent
Mr.Wescotts story on his friend John Allen is told very well and is a good insight on the greatest model railroad builder of all time. The pictures of the railroad in this book bear out the afore mentioned statement.A must have for anyone interested in model railroading and I'd recommend it to non railroaders who would appreciate a thing of beauty.

An insitefull autobiography with humor thrown in
I love comics. So there was no doubt in my mind that I wouldn't enjoy this book. But the sheer amount of information and humor Mort Walker puts into this book set me aback. Mort Walker himself is so intertwined with famous cartoonists it's no wonder he writes such an excellent strip. This book is a must read if you are even remotely interested in comics or humor. That's why I rated it 5 out of 5 stars, and give it a hearty thumbs up and my hopes and good wishes for the cartoonist.

Treasure trove!
Of course this is stuffed with strips, history, and information about the Beetle Bailey strip, all of which is a treasure trove for fans, but some of the best material is the rarely-encountered drawings, cartoons, letters, etc., from Walker's pre-BB days as a child, soldier, and novice commercial cartoonist. Superb stuff and a delight to read and reread.

Mountain Bike America -New Hampshire
Excellent! Great selection of trails with a variety of terrain. This guide book provides more pertinent trail information than any other I've read. Particularly helpful is the trail contour plots as well as overlaying trail lines onto accurate topo-maps. The authors writing style is unique causing me to actually read the book cover to cover.

Great Rides
This book has a lot of great info for both seasoned riders and the beginner. The maps, trail directions and descriptions of the rides are just the start. I have rolled over the MT. Agamenticus (Mount A) Pg. 236 trails for years and the author really hits the mark. I can't wait to hit the rest of the trails.

Review of Mountain Bike America, New Hampshire/Maine
This is the finest mountain biking guide I've ever read. It gives great information about trails of all abilities, plus tips on local attractions. This type of information is good to all types of mountain bikers, from rabid racers to families on day trips. Along with some of the premier trails in Maine and New Hampshire, such as in Acadia National Park, it gives descriptions of trails off the beaten path, such as that through Jefferson Notch in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Mr. Fitzhenry also provides local histories of the areas visited (which could be a book in itself) as well as great directions and trail descriptions. This book is good for local New Englanders and those from "away", because Bob did such a good job of finding trails throughout the two states. I highly recommend it.

All of the books written by Robert Thayer convey the true beauty of Acadia National Park. Robert is an outstanding photographer/ author and is an inspiration for my own work. Funny and perceptive
Almost anyone familiar with publishing will enjoy this book. It may be a little too painful if you are still a midlist author.

LOVE IT!
I purchased this book for my favorite english professor in college and took a glance in it myself and fell in love with it! You do not have to be a professor to get this--the humor is for all!

A Collector's Item
No matter how jaded, how cynical, how hard-boiled you may think yourself to be, at least one of these cartoons from the archives of The New Yorker will make you smile! Mr. Bob Mankoff, cartoon editor of The New Yorker since 1997, has put together a classic assortment of 104 drawings from the archives. "The New Yorker Book of Literary Cartoons" captures the cachet of the City, while poking fun at writers, editors, publishers, booksellers, and, most of all, at books, and those who read them. From the bookstore browsing Bibliophile Bikers Club to Mme Sartre's empty mailbox ("Sacré bleu! Again with the nothingness, and on my birthday yet!") to the hilarious note magnetized on "James Joyce's Refrigerator," one will find sterling examples of the wonderful satirical wit which has graced the pages of this magazine for 75 years. Buy this book for yourself! (Highly recommended for writer's block.) Better yet, buy this book for your editor or for your bookworm friends!

Superb writing -- Makes you hungry & happy
A superb piece of work by a wonderful writer, this book gives you the history and background of NC bbq, plus all the information you need to either produce your own or get out and find it in NC. The man knows what he's talking about -- and he talks it so well.

Makes me miss Durham :(
Though I only lived there two years, I've often yearned to go back to Carolina. This book made that yearning into a painful ache! How many cooking books do you read with the intensity of interest as a thrilling novel? I did this one. Warning: This is not a recipe book. Yes, of course it has recipes, from both eastern Carolina and western Carolina barbecue traditions, as well as some variations of both. But the stories and history of this book make it a treasure in my collection. This one is going into my library, far more worthy than to be consigned to the kitchen to collect dust under the microwave (a fate deservedly given to a certain book by Martha Stewart).

This book makes me more homesick than ever for my adopted home. If you have any glimmer of passion for Carolina style barbecue, you MUST get this book.

the best there is on n. carolina bbq
bob garner is the man. no other person in history has captured the true spirit of n. carolina bbq. it is a must for anyone who enjoy's bbq. it is something that can be passed down to generations.

Not One Shred of Decency

Exciting Historical Novel
The rich historical setting blended with the exciting drama of mutiny, incited by the son of the Secretary of War, made for a very satisfying read. The characters were vividly fleshed-out by the author. I appreciated the research that went into writing about this incident in our history. Excellent book.

Expertly detailed, historically accurate
In 1842, Midshipman 18-year-old Philip Spencer, the son of the President John Tyler's Secretary of War was hung for mutiny aboard the U.S.N. Somers. Not One Shred Of Decency is a masterfully written, expertly detailed, historically accurate, ardently recommended novel based on the circumstances and aftermath of this unusual event in American history. Bob Brown demonstrates a mastery of both his subject and his ability to write a gripping account that has the reader avidly engaged from first page to last.

Good book, great story
Bob Brown knows how to write believable dialogue, and he knows how to make history come to life. His story of the hanging of the son of Secretary of War, John Spencer, is fascinating and true to life. I recommend it highly.

Set a goal
I have known and worked with the author for 30 years so I might be considered prejudice. I can honestly say however that I enjoyed the book on it's own merits. Naturally being able to visualize Bob as he described his daily adventures enhanced that enjoyment. Most of those who know Bob as a conservative banker(retired) whose main idea of excercise was to walk out to his garage for a drive in his Mercedes were shocked when he announced he was going backpacking across Spain. This was completely out of character as was acknowledged by his wife Marie and other family members. However, true to character when Bob said he was going to do something you knew he would. For me the highlight of the book was his thoughful planning and preparation prior to the actual trip. I also enjoyed his colorful description of the people he met on the trial and how they watched out for each other. I actually grew to like George and Margaret and hope someday to meet them if they ever come to visit Bob in Chicago. As Bob described his daily travels his doggedness, attention to detail, honesty, frugality (he loved those $6.00 a night refuges) and dry sense of humor kept emerging. I found myself smiling often and thinking "that's Bob". I may never hike the St James Trail but Bob's book was an inspiration to rethink what is possible when you have a dream, set a goal and achieve what you set out to do.

Diary of a Walk
I was impressed by the writer's thoughtfulness to address the preparations prior to making his historic walk. Bob Tuggle's diary format of his journey makes it easy reading, as well as placing the reader in a position to actually visualize the trek without have to do the walk. The writer's descriptions of relationships developed during the trek also added some drama and enjoyable reading of his book.

Finally...a real guide
After wading through book after book about the mystical or cultural significance of the Camino, I was thrilled to find such an honest and down-to-earth guide. Mr. Tuggle made it personal enough to keep me interested, but factual enough to give me a good idea of how to plan my upcoming trip. I finally feel prepared to go. Another thing that is so great about this book is that Mr. Tuggle offers his personal email address for readers to ask questions and such. I wrote to him, not really expecting a reply, but he answered all of my questions thoroughly and with such grace and kindness that I am even more enthusiastic about my trip and his book. It is a fast read and a must for anyone who just wants to walk the trail and not worry about cosmic visions, reincarnation or the power of ley lines. Thank you, Mr. Tuggle.
