Bob the Angry Flower: Coffee With Sinistar
Published in Paperback by Leftover Books (01 December, 1999)
Author: Stephen Notley
Amazon base price: $12.00
Average review score:

Bob is the best
I would recommend this book as well as the rest of the BtAF books, available at Notley's website, angryflower.com. The humor is quirky and cool, Bob's rants and tantrums are strange and hilarious, and it's just fun in general. Get to know Bob, he rocks.

Yay for Angry Flower!
Bob the Angry Flower...Humor so bold as to make a large man weep. Alright, maybe not a large man, but maybe a sickly, craven, pansy man. Still...Read it. Steve Notley so owns me.

It keeps getting better
It's been a long wait for this second Bob the Angry Flower book; but it was worth it. True to form, Stephen Notley delivers more of his sophisticated and unique brand of humor. "Nobody wants to be lectured by an Invisible Cow", "The Seduction", "AI", "Lying to the loan officer" and others are funny because they portray scenes which are, on the one hand, wildly absurd, but on the other, strangely rational, at least in Bob's twisted world. You get a sense that anything can happen, and it usually does.

I'm also impressed with the artwork. Stephen pays attention to details, and the result is an added level of expression - the malovent mischief in the slant of Bob's eyes, the muted horor in Freddy's eyes, the apathic resignation on stumpy's stance. The richness of drawing (not consistantly, to be honest, but prevailingly) is especially enjoyable when compared to the sparce and minimalist styles of most other cartoonists.

"Bob the Angry Flower: Coffee with Sinistart" is a refuge from the mundain and simplistic humor of the daily funnies. It's original, provocative, and, of course, hillarious.

Another Hit in Our House!
This book was very simple and just long enough that my children did not lose interest in a drawn out tale. As usual, the characters work together to find a solution that makes everybody feel good, and it helps my children talk about their feelings and come up with solutions. I love Dragon Tales, and this book is no exception! I am very glad that I ordered it!

My own "Shrinking Dragon" loved it!
As a proud mother of a 2.5 year old "shrinking dragon", I really enjoyed reading this book with my daughter. She is shy and seems to relate to Cassie more than the other characters on the show. When she saw this book, I knew I would only be reading this book to her for some time to come! I truly believe it helps her with her own shyness as well. The repeating passages that she is familiar with from the show make her eyes light up. It is fun to have her read it to me because she remembers so much of what happens from page to page. A must for preschoolers!

Cassie loves a parade
I first read this book to my younger sister Jane. She loved it . It is a wonderful book for 3 and 4 year olds .It tells about Cassie the Dragon who signed up for the book float at the parade at the school in the sky (her school). If she does not get picked to ride on the book float or does she. You will have to read this book to find out.

Another great Bob Barner book
I picked up this book for almost three year old daughter because we loved Bob Barner's Fish Wish. My daughter learned so much about the ocean from that book and I thought Dem Bones would give her an introduction to the body. The book follows an old African folk song called Dem Bones. "The ankle bone is conneced to the foot bone, the foot bone is connected to the leg bone" and so on. Since my daughter is so young I just sing the song to her and point out the bones on her body as we see the corresponding ones on the skeletons in the book. If you have an older child there is much more in depth information about the bones provided on each page. That is why I love Bob barner's books so much. My daughter can follow along the simple to read stories now and when she gets older I can go over the more informative parts with her later. She has already learned a great deal from this book and she really loves it. Bob Barner really makes learning fun.

Dem Bones
As an elementary school librarian, I used this book with my classes. We sang the song as we turned the pages. Then, at the end we laughed about the names of the bones and practiced ways of using the "real" names. 1) Go to the nurse after you skinned your knee on the playground and ask for a bandaid to put on your patella; 2) You stub your toe and grab it and moan, "Oh, I stubbed my phlanges", etc.

Kids from K through 5th grade enjoyed this! Lots of fun.

We love this book!
This book offers a wonderful introduction to the bone structure of the human body, even for very young children (my 3 year old daughter and niece just love this book). The use of fun, bright skeletons appeals to the reader and balances the use of scientific language in the text. Even mom and dad will learn a thing or two while reading it! You'll have your kids singing Dem Bones (the foot bone connected to the ankle bone, etc.) before you know it.

Wow--Bob Griffiths wrote this book for me!
I was attracted to the title of this book since I have been in the same field for 30 years and have begun to feel burnt out. I didnt see a way out before normal retirement, until I read this book.

This book has been very helpful to me since it includes a step by step guide to identifying your passions, what you do well, your fears, your financial picture (including differentiating between needs and wants), family concerns and more. Equally encouraging are first person reports from people who actually made dramatic life style changes and are doing what they love. I have gone over the sections and am just finishing evaluating my finances and feel that I am in a better position to make a change in the next few years. I now see that some lifestyle changes, an early or normal retirement with a reduced income and a part time job could give me options that will improve the quality of life for myself and my family.

Sometimes you need a nudge or another way of seeing things differently. This book has given that to me and I highly recommend it.

Wish I had this book 4 years ago!!
When I left the corporate world in June of 1998, it was quite a difficult period -- after 14 years, I left a high-paying job at a movie company in Hollywood and moved to a small Northern California town (without a paying job waiting for me) to write plays and screenplays. It was trial and error all the way -- with the emphasis on Error. This past Christmas I was given this book as a gift. Wow! What common sense guidelines, interesting case histories, and superb advice from Mr. Griffiths! While I can't undo past mistakes, this book is STILL useful in helping me plot out my goals and do it successfully. I urge anyone who is thinking of changing careers in mid-life (or even before) TO READ THIS BOOK! It will save you a lot of grief. Take it from one who knows!

Bob Griffiths' book changed our lives!
When my husband was down-sized a few weeks ago from his corporate job, with its hefty salary, we were both depressed and fearful about the future. Then, we read Bob Griffiths' intelligent new guide to career change and personal renewal. My husband had been an industrial chemist for years, but had often felt that he had chosen the wrong profession. Secretly, he felt that he belonged in academics. Bob's sage advice in his book encouraged him to apply for a job teaching college chemistry at a prestigious college. At the time, he believed that he had no chance of landing an interview, let alone being offered the position. However, he was chosen over forty other candidates, and there is an excellent chance that his contract will be renewed for next year. It is true that he makes less money in academics than he did in industry, but he has never felt better about himself and his life, and that makes me happy, not only for him, but about our marriage, which had suffered because of his dissatisfaction with his former job. We both feel that we have a new lease on life. I highly recommend Bob Griffiths' book to anyone who is tired of the same old grind. He's a superb coach who inspires you to realize your dream in life, but he is also a Dutch-uncle when it comes to helping you deal with the practical and financial aspects of changing your career.

good
I loved this book. The pictures were very nice to look at. This book tends to focus more on Bob's music career then his personal life though. But otherwise this is a great book for all you Marley fans.

A Musical Prophet
Like so many other deceased musicians, there are way too many "insider" books about the person. This is the only authorized book by the Bob Marley Foundation and it is a superb picture book. Filled with an abundance of color and black and white photographs this book brings the man to life. The pictures are rare as some are private family photos that are being released for the first time. This is a book that you want nearby so you can look at the photos periodically and remember the man as you listen to his music. The introduction by his wife Rita Marley is heartfelt and lays the foundation for intimate views of Bob Marley. His passions, his friends, his children, and even his music is here for all fans of Bob Marley. One of the cool features of this book is the format and how the narrative is given using some of the titles of his albums as a backdrop. Just a great book about a great man who passed this world much too quickly but left his mark for all to listen to the whisperings of a mystic. "Bob will come again. Like Christ he shall come in a new name"-Rita Marley.

A liberating and inspirational story of a true prophet.
Songs of Freedom truely gave me as a Bob Marley fan a better look at the life of a legend. Next to Bob's biography, Catch a Fire, this is the best acount of Bob Marley I have read. Songs of Freedom is filled with unseen photgraphs and quotes from Bob's loved ones, friends, and colleagues. An excellent story that has touched me deeply. I give this book a strong recomendation to life long Marley fans and those who have yet to discover the mystery, inspiration, and spirituality in this mans life.

This book is a very "happy read"
Although Bob Mathias: Across the Fields of Gold will not be a big threat to win any Pulitzer Prize, I thoroughly enjoyed it's charm and always felt good every time I picked it up. This story is a sleeper, not in a boring way, but in the fact that Bob Mathias is really one of the great "stories" of the 20th Century. It just may be a sleeping giant!

Great Book! Excellent writing!
This book is a "must read" for anyone that enjoys reading about a truly great american athelete. This is a one of a kind book, put together with a great deal of thought and preparation. I applaud this book. It simply can not be put down, once you start reading. Where photographs and text truly meet! Bravo!

Enjoyed it very much
Just want to say that I enjoyed reading Across the Fields of Gold. I am inspired by this great athlete from a wonderful time in the USA when family and community pitched in for the good of all.

The Book of Tequila: A Complete Guide
Published in Hardcover by Open Court Publishing Company (1997)
Author: Bob Emmons
Amazon base price: $26.95
Average review score:

Excellent primer.
I found this book to be very comprehensive on the history and process of tequilla making. The focus on the process is more in depth than the Mesa Grill Guide to Tequila. The book surveys various quality tequilla producers and distilleries. There is also a section on organizing a tequilla tasting. I would recommend this book if you are the type of person who enjoys developing hobbies over a medium to long term timeframe, or if you are a seasoned wine or beer taster. The content is beginning to show its age however, as descriptions of many newer brands tequilas I have encountered in restaurants cannot be found in the text.

The most factual, comprehensive book about tequila
Bob Emmons has done his homework. He is painstakingly accurate. His tequila facts read a bit like a textbook and his stories, one from almost every distillery, read like prose. You cannot ask for.

He lets the reader know what an NOM number is and what it means. He shows which distilleries make only one unique brand and which make dozens of brands using the same tequila in all brands

If you are serious about tequila, this book is a must.

Best Tequila Reference Book Available

This book will not sit on your bookshelf!

New tequilas have come to the market since this book was written. But the reference guide in the book is so complete that it's easy to look up a NOM, find which distillery it was made at, and see which other products on the market are made from that same distillery. There is also a lot of personal tasting notes on all the major tequilas available written by Bob Emmons that I find very interesting.

This book has helped me immensely and I recommend it to anyone interested in setting up their own tasting panels, mixing margaritas or drinking straight super premium tequilas, or even visiting the tequila producing areas and distilleries that actually Bob does not recommend.

great book
this is one of the great books available the sport of boxing.whether you are a casual fan,or the true afficionado this book is a must.filled with great photos, great bios, and recaps of some of the greatest bouts ever fought.one of the best things about this book is that the info is right there for you to compare the modern day "pound for pound" best and compare them with the best of all time.the sad part is that you will also see that boxing has degenerated to the point where a "champion"is rarely what would be a champion by the standards of the days gone by.

Good book
This is a one of the better boxing pictorial books ever done. Great pics and intelligent and fair text.

Excellent photos, well written, objective analysis of boxers
This handsome book with it's colorful and captivating photos, encompasses and presents a succinct exciting, yet compassionate commentary of the men who competed in the most aggressive and most popular sport in history. The commentaries blend the personal with the professional. It is done in a very sensitive manner allowing room for one to appreciate, as best possible, the true personality of the champion. It preserves their stature as heroes yet allows us to see them, in a sense, as frail humans with much left to be desired. It is truly a collector's item; a must for any boxing fan who has followed the game over the years.

Bruno Sammartino: An Autobiography of Wrestling's Living Legend
Published in Paperback by Imagine (1990)
Authors: Bruno Sammartino, Bob Michelucci, and Paul McCollough
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Kayfabe, Flashbacks and other thoughts
This book was very good but also had some negatives. The positive side was a fine, detailed history of wrestling when it was wrestling. Sammartino takes the reader down the now-familiar stories of every wrestler's rough start in the business. In this book you will see wrestling when it was still viewed as being a legitamate competition, so much that sports sections in newspapers carried the results alongside of the NFL and Boxing match results. This brought back pleasant memories for wrestling fans like myself who detest what wrestling has evolved into. The negative side of the book are conspicuous misspellings, typos and other grammatical errors starting with page one and continuing onward. Also, and this may or may not be a "negative," but Bruno NEVER breaks kayfabe in the book. He actually goes to great lengths to support the legitamacy of wrestling--so much as to even deny that razor blades were ever used to draw blood. His exact quote (regarding the use of "blading" in the ring) is "Again, if such a thing has happened, I don't know about it." He then defends his answer saying there is no way a wrestler could smuggle a blade into the ring and cut himself during a match without anybody seeing it. He makes the point that he never even wore tape on his wrists to hide a razor blade. This, of course, is irrelevant as some men (Bruiser Brody, et. al.) hid them in their inner lips. Others (Hogan, et. al.) hid them in their tights. He also makes painful efforts to deny that matches are ever predetermined. This book was written in the early 90s--when wrestling was still somewhat protected. Also, before people like Superstar Billy Graham (who took the title from Sammartino) as well as Ventura, DiBiase, Hogan, etc. openly admitted that razor blades were always used to draw blood and that the outcomes of matches were always predetermined. I find it hard to believe that everybody was in on the angle except the World Champ at the time! (Can you imagine Graham pulling Bruno aside and saying, "Bruno, I gotta let you in on something--I was just playing the whole time. We all were. We were going to tell you, but it was like spilling the beans about Santa Clause to a 3 year old!") To Sammartino's credit, wreslters were and are wonderful atheletes and no matter how much "kayfabe" Bruce puts into the book, I would still strongly recommend it to any fan. It gives a glimmer of hope into the mind of a genuine old-school wrestler. I just wish wrestling was like it used to be in the early 80s and before. I will always be a fan of Bruno Sammartino!

Bruno Cleans the Mat..
The other reviewers are absolutely correct. This is the best book of its kind; Bruno and his co-authors are to be thanked for putting into print not only a great life-story but perhaps the best overview of 20 or so of wrestling's greatest years. Brono's story contains informative, interesting glimpses at mat legends like Killer Kowalski, Primo Carrera, and Gorilla Monsoon, and thrilling blow-by-blow recaps of some of his legendary matches. Add to that the very enlightening and often touching scenes of life-on-the-road, away from family, and the blood-boiling indictment of today's wrestling and promoters' throat-cutting (guess who?) of their stars, makes this THE book on wrestling.

A legend in and out of the ring.
Brunos' book is the most realistic autobiography you could ever read. I should know because I'm a close personal friend of the family. The book not only deals with wrestling but it also tells of his personal life. He is a great role model for people of all ages. The book tells of the sacrifices that his family had to make for him to become the Legend that he is. It will inspire both young and old to overcome all obstacles to achieve thier dreams. There are few role models left of his stature, this is a must read for all who wish for genuine people.

Bugs! Bugs! Bugs!
If you are a parent of a younger child looking for an educational book on bugs you should check out "Bugs! Bugs! Bugs!" by Bob Barner. When finding a book for very young children there are many things to look at, such as the use of bright colors to catch their attention, thick pages that won't tear easily, and large, easy-to-read typeface. "Bugs! Bugs! Bugs!" accomplishes all of these.
When it comes to the pictures, he has the bright colors and uses collages to add texture and realism to the illustrations. He uses pictures that are more like cartoons than reality so the kids will not be afraid of the featured insects. He puts these pictures on thick paper that will not tear easily so the kids don't destroy the book too quickly. At the end of the book there is a "Bug-O-Meter" that can help kids identify bugs and possibly help them learn to use tables and graphs. He also tells the reader little things about the different bugs to help kids learn the differences between the featured "bugs".
The way the author uses words is engrossing, with the words scrolling across the pages, leading the reader through the illustrations. The sparse wording may help children learn to spell. The wording is also contrasting to the colors of the illustrations and creates a dimension of words that can be taken apart from the illustrations. We reccommend it to parents of young toddlers.

My daughte LOVES this book!
My daughter is 14 months old and she absolutely loves this book. She pages through it over and over again. We have a pile of about 20 books for her to "read" and this is always the first book she grabs. She points to the bugs and we say the name and then she'll turn the page and continue. She loves the bright color pages. I just wish it came in board book version, because she's wearing out the pages. She is just one, so she's a little rough on paper pages. ;) I love the page in the back that teaches you about the insects.

A Best Loved Book
My daughter is 2 and 2 months and she loves this book because
of the great colors, simple but meaningful language, and because she can associate the words and pictures with real bugs she sees in our garden. Each time she wants to read it, she asks to have it read to her at least 4 times in a row. A great introduction to reading book.
