Gets teens on the goal-setting track!
As a father of three teenage girls, I'm always looking for ways to help them reach their full potential. What Do You Really Want has really given focus to my daughters' everyday lives. Like so many teens, my girls have great hopes and dreams but aren't sure how to make sense of them. The book's fun worksheets and journal exercises helps teens decide what's truly important to them and takes them step by step through the goal-setting process to help them achieve those goals. What's more, it's a book they can carry with them for the rest of their lives and continually turn back to for guidance. I recommend this book to any parent or teacher looking to bring direction to teens they care about - or even themselves. I was surprised at how much I've incorporated what I learned about goal setting in my own life!

Excellent Guide for Those Suffering The Pain of Abuse
I could not put this book down. Most "self-help" books lay on my shelf half read, but this one was a real page turner. The author does an excellent job describing the forms of emotional abuse and helps you understand the dynamics behind it. She also provides helpful information in the book for the abuser. The best part of her book is the information she provides at the end of the book for changing your life so you can begin to seek out healthy relationships. She provides concrete, tangible things you can do to help raise your self-esteem and to identify the warning signs in possible abusers!

The Emotionally Abusive Relationship
I would like to thank you for publishing the book by Ms. Beverly Engel, entitled "The Emotionally Abusive Relationship" . This book was well worth the time and effort it took to read and, I am convinced that if others had an opportunity to experience what I gained from this reading it would force them to look deep within and possibly gain an understanding of themselves. Ms. Engles book, The Emotionally Abusive Relationship was recommended to me by my wife, who believed that I was emotionally abusive. I was told to underline passages within the book because she felt that they pertained to the way I was treating (mistreating) her. I agreed to read the book and carry out her wishes, well upon reading the book it turned out that she was the cause of hers and our emotional abuse. This book described my wife to a tee, which she still denies. In order for one to understand ones problem one must first admit that there is a problem unfortunately others would rather blame others for their own inner turmoil's.

Ms. Engles kudos to you and your fabulous work and for the advice you rendered, you're my blessing in disguise.

Sincerely

Ron Owens

An important book on emotional abuse
Beverly Engel is a terrific writer and her knowledge and sensitivity make this book absolutely vital to anyone trying to understand, improve, or get out of an emotionally abuse relationship. I highly recommend it -- it has been a real source of comfort and knowledge to me as I've tried to understand why I find myself in emotionally abusive relationships again and again.

This book changed my life in one night!
For once, a book that is not about keeping him, but about KEEPING YOU!

Have you lost friends because all you talk about is your relationship and you neglect them for him? Do you ever feel empty and lonely when he's not around? Do you suppress or change your personality, your habits, your clothing or appearance, or feign interest in his hobbies? Do you neglect your own career, your own needs, your own goals, things you enjoy when in a relationship? Does your relationship become your life? If you answered yes, or "yes, but..." to any of these questions, you might be a disappearing woman. Through this book, I found out that I was, and how disappearing had pervaded and destroyed my relationship, and how I can put that to an end, starting today.

For a year and a half, I have been in love with a wonderful man. As I started to love him more and more, I tried harder to make myself into someone he wouldn't leave. Problems from this snowballed, and finally, he wanted to make the insanity stop. I was devastated. I thought I could get him to tell me what to do to get him back - *who to be*. I began looking at the hundreds of books on relationships, hoping to find one that would tell me what I could do to fix everything - I even considered re-reading that horrible book of games "The Rules". I am so thankful that I found "Loving Him Without Losing You."

This book was like the sun breaking through the clouds for me! I saw, for the first time, a clear picture of a behavior that I've had through every relationship, since childhood, because of childhood. I never realized the full picture of what I was doing to myself, my relationship, and the man I love. I was still looking for ways to sacrifice myself to keep him. That is, until I read this book.

What you will find:

Part One: Disappearing Women
Through information and stories of real women (and celebrities), find out if you disappear, and WHY Women disappear (cultural and psychological truths). Most importantly, Beverly describes the problem as a continuum, from mild to severe cases, and no matter where you fall on that continuum, this book can help. The problem is laid out simply, accurately, and completely - extensively reinforced by respected works of other people. This book doesn't purport to be a quick fix and isn't some silly parable about planets or ridiculous rules or rigid gender roles.

Part Two: The Seven Commitments.

Through facts, real women's stories, and the author's own self discovery, each of the seven chapters in this section talks about the benefits of the committment, ways that it shows love and respect to your partner, probing questions that will really get you thinking, signs and symptoms to look for, and steps to take to get yourself back. Some steps are large and take dedication, but others are things you can do NOW, TODAY, to get yourself back on track. Extremely detailed steps (with extensive references) every woman can take, regardless of age or relationship status, to begin to find herself as an individual.

Part Three: Becoming a Woman of Substance

Further exercises for women with an extreme form of the problem, but also great for exploring yourself by finding your authentic self, your voice, your shadow, and your substance.

Where Do you Go From Here?

More steps, hints, and helps, as well as an extensive book list.

Caveats:

1. As you are in an emotionally vulnerable state while reading this book, you may be affected by the horror stories and lack of success stories. She talks about one woman who married someone who molested her daughter, one that married someone who trying to hide his homosexuality. Her "success" story was about Frieda Kahlo, who remarried Diego Rivera but would not sleep or live with him - that doesn't sound successful to me! I think this book would have benefited from some encouraging examples of women both in and out of relationships who had found themselves, and found a healthy relationship or revised their current one.
2. Because you're looking at yourself in a new way, you may feel more negative than necessary. As you read, it is easy to get caught up with all of the examples that trigger memories of what you've done or do, and forget about the times you have been yourself, causing you to feel a little *more* depressed about yourself after reading it.
3. There are not a lot of positive viewpoints from or about men. Although there are some times that she does talk about good men, most of the men in this book are bad men. However, it is very true that good men can fall into playing along with their partner's disappearing act because of their love for her, and that he would be extremely happy and supportive for the changes this book can bring about.
4. Unfortunately, for Women only. I wish that this book was entitled "Loving *Your Partner* Without Losing Yourself" because although Beverly pontificates in detail all of the ways women are socially programmed to disappear in relationships, I believe it happens to men, too.

Beyond the caveats, though, lies a powerful, wonderful, compassionate book. When I saw that the answer was not in becoming someone else, but finding me, and that I could begin to heal my relationship by *being me* instead of playing games, a burden lifted from my shoulders. I talked to the man that I love, and he said that he saw me fading away, and wanted to end to our relationship because he was tired of me faking, and his own playing to it. He believes I have become self aware, and has committed to helping me become "A Woman of Substance." With the simple, yet deeply reverberating steps in this book, I have begun to do just that. YOU CAN TOO!

good advice without the hype
This book is a refreshing change from the usual self-help books, which are typically are filled with the author's own buzz-words and usually over-simplified view of relationships. Ms. Engel explains problems that women and men frequently encounter, explaining them not only in terms of the individual's choices, but also in terms of the cutural and social settings in which they arise. Rather than give a formula for success, she helps the readers understand themselves better and inspires in them confidence for making their lives better. My daughter, 20, found this book to be very helpful in making sense of a failed relationship; I picked it up and found some good ideas for improving my own long-term marriage.

Caution
I wanted to read a synopsis of this book before purchasing it. I've read Bev's other book on Emotionally Abused Women and found it very helpful. I have been in therapy for some time and am about to start a Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills program. The paperwork from my provider referred me to a website: the Mental Health Sanctuary to read up on Borderline Personality Disorder, etc. I would be remiss if I did not caution other Amazon customers in taking as gospel the words of those of us who post reviews here; .... There are two sides to every story....I know I open myself up for scrutiny by even posting this caution, but I am concerned when anyone posing as an authority is impaired themselves. I would just advise caution. I don't know Ms. Pheil, I just know the damage that can be done by following the lead of someone who perhaps means well but needs to heal themselves first, before giving advice to others.

Very Informative!!!
I think this book is very informative and I recommend this to anyone. I'm still reading it, when I'm done, I'll be passing it along to relatives.

The hidden dimensions of our health
My name is Aliou Ayaba a physician from Benin in West-Africa.I have practiced in rural hospital in Benin for almost ten years now.I met Dr Yates by chance because she was willing to donnate medical equipments and supplies to rural hospitals in Benin after an ad I placed in a local newspaper. If I saw her book on stack in a library I would not have paid attention to it because like all today modern physicians alternative/traditional/ natural medicine is secondary, imprecise and sometimes not important. It is sad because everytime we want to make a prescription about High blood pressure, diabete, sickle-cell anemia, depression etc, we start with :" hygienic and dietetic counseling" even though we do not have time to explain all this section to the patient..But this is rather a big issue about the place of alternative medicine today. The book written by Dr.Yates impress me a lot for it reveals in a very simple language the hidden part of our health. It has more effect on me probably because I practice in a rural hospital in Benin where I cross every day in the hospital traditional healers giving secret care to their hospitalized patients just because unlike we modern physicians busy with "mathmatical medicine" they take time to listen to patients, their recipes are natural, cheaper easy to use and with less side effects...they care not only for the body but also the mind and the patient's environment as well. Cardiovascular diseases CVD are the first killer worlwide and as Dr.Yates indicates there is a single chance: they are preventable, their prevention is cheaper or only costs a little change in our lifestyle. For everyone and particularly black women all over the world I recommend this book because if today we cannot change our socioeconomic status which put us at higher risk of dying for CVD at least we can modifies slightly our lifestyle by following the simple receipes of Dr.Yates in order to enjoy this life that never rewind...

Heart Health for Black Women by Dr. Beverly Yates
This is a very excellent book. I found it very informative and inspiring. I enjoyed the fact that it covered not only physical issues but emotional and spiritual issues as well. It made for a very good read because I felt the author really knew her subjects and what things might be underlying causes for ill health. I would recommend this book to all women who are on a quest to feel better physically and emotionally.

The best!!!
Beverly Connor is a jewel of an author who has yet to be discovered by the masses. But she will be. No mystery writer this good can go long without topping the bestseller list. In this installment of her Lindsay Chamberlain series, Beverly does it again with clever twists and turns and sharp writing. She's a smart writer for an intelligent reader. I never read a Connor book without learning something and, quite frankly, that's the kind of fiction I like to read. Buy this book and I promise you won't be disappointed.

Another triumph for Lindsay
Lindsay Chamberlain never invites danger into her life; it just happens upon her frequently like an unwanted guest. In this tale Lindsay is in danger...this time of losing her job at the University of Georgia's Archaeology Department due to a merger with another department. If that were not enough to worry her, a cache of priceless artifacts delivered to her by her father is stolen, and all eyes are on Lindsay. Lindsay also becomes involved in the murder case of a long-missing UGA professor whose skeleton is recently found? Friends and strangers linked to Lindsay are either injured or killed trying to help, and Lindsay must put together all of the strewn puzzle pieces before she is next on the hit list.

I have enjoyed Beverly Connor's series for many years; Lindsay Chamberlain is one of the most original and dynamic sleuths to have been created in recent years, and Dressed to Die is well worth the cover price.

Another Excellent Book!
Ms. Connor does another excellent job! Dressed To Die is a finely written book. This plot is close to the protagonist heart. Lindsey must face that her dear grandfather may not have been the man she thought he was. This story involves two murders close to home. One found on her family farm and another involving the University where she works. Once again, Ms. Connor gives the reader a fun and involving plot to soak up. What is the family secret? Who did what and why did people have to die? The author does a great job in answering these questions, with pose and wonderful character development. What a fun read this mystery series is, I look forward to more Lindsay Chamberlain novels. Thank you Ms. Connor for this excellent series.

A fun new series!
When identical twin Bert Tatum is approached on her lunch break from a handsome man who seems to know her (though she's never seen him before in her life) she doesn't think much of it. It happens occasionally that she's mistaken for her twin sister, Nan. Unfortunately, when the stranger shows up murdered on the local news and her sister claims to also have never met him, the mystery begins!

The twins both get themselves involved in an intricately-plotted puzzle that involves a murder from their childhood somehow tying-in with the current tragedy. Twists and turns abound and the writing is sassy and enjoyable.

The interesting thing about the book is that alternating chapters are written in the first-person by each of the twins, giving each part a unique perspective on the goings-on. It's particularly fun when chapters overlap and you can see either the similarity or complete difference in both Bert and Nan's points of view.

A charming and quick read, I found it difficult to put down! It's also the first book in the series so it's a great place to start if you're interested! I've purchased the second and am eager to start it!

Double Fun
Identical twins Bert and Nan Tatum are used to being mistaken for each other. So when a stranger approaches Bert on the street, she assumes the stranger is looking for Nan. Only later does she find out that Nan didn't know him either. By that point, he's dead. Nan, curious as to how a complete stranger knew them, drags Bert into the investigation. But it's soon clear that they are both in real danger and the only way to get out alive is to solve the case themselves.

This book is a lot of fun. The "gimmick" of alternating chapters from Bert and Nan is part of it. It took me awhile to get used to it, but it brings out the humor in the different points of view. The authors, identical twins themselves, have done a good job of creating very great characters. Nan and Bert are very different, and the other characters are also well defined. The plot moves along at a quick pace and reaches a logical conclusion. A great first novel in an enjoyable series.

Twice the fun!
I love mysteries and "snack" on them the way others indulge in junk food. I'm addicted, and in Double Murder I found a mystery as good to read as chocolate is to eat. (And with the possible exception of sex and sports cars, very few things are as good as chocolate.) With Double Murder the reader gets a bonus--not only a great mystery but a glimpse into the world of twins. The authors do for twins what Tony Hillerman does for the Navajo Indians and Elizabeth Peters does for Egyptology. What's next on the twin authors' list of mysteries?

Twins, Murder and Mistaken Identities
Will they ever learn? These twins get into more trouble than playful kittens! It's a good mystery, with interesting twists. Bert and Nan get mixed up with murder and their attempts to solve it are hilarious and adventurous. A good story to spend quiet time with.

The Twins Are Still Going Strong In Their Fifth Mystery
Nan Tatum is tired of the single life. Deciding to try a new way to meet men, she signs herself and her twin sister Bert up for MySoulMate.org, an internet dating service. Soon, she thinks Mr. Right has replied to Bert's posting. Posing as Bert, Nan soon finds out that Mr. Right is Mr. Wrong. The next time she sees him, he's Mr. Dead. But when the body disappears, she can't get anyone to believe her. Dragging Bert along, she tries to prove she's right. Meanwhile, Bert is more concerned about patching things up with her boyfriend, Hank, who believes Bert signed herself up for the dating service.

This book takes the mystery solving twins through yet another harrowing adventure. The twin authors have once again provided plenty of suspense and laughs, and I could hardly put the book down. The alternating narration continues to be an asset, helping with both character and plot development. This is the fifth book in the series, and it shows no sign of slowing down at all.

Fans of the series will enjoy this book immensely, and I'm already looking forward to Nan and Bert's sixth outing. If you've never read these books, do yourself a favor and get the first one (DOUBLE MURDER) today.

The Twin Sisters are Back!
This series is a delight! For those who like mysteries that are lively, colorful, and witty - but low on the grimmer aspects of death, this is your cup of tea. This time the real-life, identical twin sisters have written a mystery involving an Internet dating service and their series' characters, identical twin sisters Bert and Nan. The twin's love lives, always an interesting feature of previous mysteries, are highlighted in this one. A trail of deaths follow the twins into the cyber world of dating. The dynamics between Bert, the traditional sister, and Nan, the nontraditional sister, are great fun. With this entry, the writers have continued their development of the intricacies of a twin relationship, as well as a sister relationship. The creative use of each twin's point of view in alternating chapters allows the reader to understand the motivation of each - but it also gives the reader an often amusing peek into how each twin views the other one! Louisville, Kentucky, is the interesting setting for these mysteries. More Bert and Nan!

good
I think that Ramona the Brave was a really good book.It was funny in some parts of the book.I am nine years old and I think that other nine or ten year olds would really like it!Beverly Cleary has been through alot of books especally Ramona books. Her books are one of the best books that I have ever read !!!!!!!!!

Nothing is fair in the first grade-- a true-to-life story
Boy, Bev knows what she's talking about! This book is very realistic. I remember reading it in 3rd grade a long time ago (the Ramona series were the first chapter books I ever read! ) Reading it and about all the injustices Ramona suffered, I could really identify with her! First grade was not easy for me, I was always in trouble for things I didn't start, and felt so picked on and misunderstood! Poor Ramona, I felt so bad for her and knew exactly how she felt!

Ramona the Brave promotes self-esteem in children
More so than with any of the other Ramona books, Cleary weaves intense emotionality into Ramona the Brave without slowing down the action. This allows her to create the story of a six-year-old's struggle to grow up (and survive first grade).

Along the way, Ramona learns how to make "the girl in the mirror like her." Children who identify with Ramona will find themselves more able to achieve the same goal after reading this book, especially after discovering how Ramona resolves her problems.

Lessons from the Masters
Very generic, some nice figure drawing but on the whole not worth the expense.

The Best There Is.
This is the best book for the art student that has ever been written, or ever will be written.

Excellent Introduction to Drawing the Figure
Mr. Hale's book has been invaluble in understanding figure drawing. He uses wonderful examples from the great masters. At times his commentary seems snobbish but if you can get past that then you will learn a great deal. I would highly recommend this book to anyone (novice to intermediate) interested in drawing the figure.
