Bravo!
A marvelous book exploring not only the history of wine making in Long Island but also how it began in this country. It also provides a nice story of the wineries and the people behind the wine. I recently came across the book while visiting a specialty wine shop in New York. I never thought much of New York wine before but after reading the book, it served as an excellent guide this past summer as I visited many of the wineries.

Now I wish they did one for New York State.

A toast, to the to the Authors and the wines of Long Island.

Don't Leave Home Without It
"The Wines of Long Island" by Beltrami and Palmedo As an occasional visitor to Long Island's East End, I was pleasantly surprised when someone gave me a copy of the second edition of "The Wines of Long Island". Not knowing much about wines, just knowing that I enjoyed drinking them, I was pleased to read a book which not only dealt with the subject at hand but offered a general course on differences between wines. There are finely described sections on each variety. (Did you know that the name merlot comes from merle, the French name for blackbird?) There is a spendid chapter on the history of wine-making on Long Island. We are told why the region has the potential, particularly on the North Fork, to become a great region. Then there are attractive accounts of the wine-makers currently in the business of producing these wines. What made them go in to what can be a difficult life; what do they deal with in producing these wines? While talking about these wineries, the authors make no judgments on the wines, it is up to us to do that. The colorful photographs are also an enticement to anyone to want to visit these wineries. Before a visit, it is my opinion that they should not be without a copy of "The Wines of Long Island".

From diet to lifestyle triggers for depression
Women & Depression provides a self-help guide which explores not only the symptoms and treatment of depression, but keys to understanding how it evolves. Many struggles with depression are the result of women participating in careers designed for men, without consideration of pregnancy and other changes in a woman's life. From diet to lifestyle triggers for depression, this provides some important keys to understanding.

A must have for women suffering from depression
I had recently been diagnosed with depression and was sure they had it wrong. My opinion of depression was people sitting around moaning about how bad their life is. I was so wrong and this book helped me recognize so many things in myself that were always attributed to me just being me. Ms. Rosenthal gives straight-forward advice and a no-holds barred look at how depression can affect women so differently than men. I would highly reccomend this book for women with questions regarding depression and for their families as it is extremely insightful. My sister now realizes that I actually do have a problem that I can't just "snap out of".

Clever, stylish and fun!
A friend of mine at work recommended this book, and I really loved it. If I had to describe it, I'd say it's a gender-bending piece of classic crime noir - but with topics ripped from the headlines. Its interesting to note that Ms. Beck wrote this before the recent turn of terrorist events. Wow! The style is very spartan and clean, and there are plenty of bizarre surprises (don't want to give them away). Definitely the kind of book you just have to read in one sitting.

A Great Little Book
Set in the fog and fantasy of San Francisco, this book tells about three transgender women who get unwillingly caught up in a terrorist plot. The Osama-like "Mr. M" { a character whose chilly inner thoughts are quite interesting} and the old cop{male} and young cop{female} who try to get a handle on what's going on are all interesting characters. A slightly weird group whose goings on constitute a multifaceted mystery that challenges some of society"s most important issues -- gender bias, relationships, and terrorism.

Abhidharmasamuccaya: The Compendium of the Higher Teaching (Philosophy)

A Mahayana Abhidharma
If you have ever wondered about the Mahayana Abhidharma, this book is for you. I mean, if everything is ultimately empty like Mahayana Madhyamaka teaches, or if everything is just thought like Mahayana Yogacara teaches, why bother with the detailed technicalities of the Abhidharma? Well, Asanga, founder of the Yogacara branch of Mahayana, must have thought there was good reason to do so, or he would never have bothered to write this book!

There is a story about Asanga and his younger brother Vasubandhu. Vasubandhu had written the Abhidharmakosa, which went on to become the classic of "Hinayana" Abhidharma. Later on, after talking with his older brother Asanga, Vasubandhu converted to Mahayana. He was so mortified at what he had earlier taught, with his great eloquence, that he decided to cut out his tongue. Asanga dissuaded him from doing so, telling him to use his eloquence to spread the Mahayana. So goes the story.

Asanga had by then apparently already written the Abhidharmasamuccaya. But despite the story, this book seems to have a lot in common with his brother's Abhidharmakosa. I guess that is because the Abhidharma, whether Hinayana or Mahayana, contains the basic teachings of the Buddha. I do get the sense that the Abhidharmakosa is a compendium of the basic Buddhist teachings that was skillfully put together, after these teachings were sorted out, by a brilliant thinker, Vasubandhu; while the Abhidharmasamuccaya is a compendium of the basic Buddhist teachings that was put together by a practiced meditator, Asanga. Both of these books are heavy going, but nonetheless fascinating to read and compare.

My 7 year old loves it!
My daughter and I were more than pleased with this math CD. I'm pleased with the music style -catchy tune AND understandable, no rap. I also like the fact that each addition is repeated. Although my daughter knows how to add she still uses her fingers sometimes, I have found that this has helped her to memorize facts more easily. The singing book that comes along is a big plus! I would also recommend the Multiplication unplugged because it teaches how to count by 2s,3s,etc.

Creative and a good read!
This book is very entertaining! The dialoge is great and overall it is a wonderful story. The names used for the animals are very descriptive and humorous.

Young Sara is put in a predicament when she realizes she can communicate with the animals (Wollo Bushtail and others) and must be a laison between "human kind" and the "forest dwellers" to help solve a big problem.

I would recommend this book for pre-teens and older. I really, really enjoyed reading this story.

Very Clever!!
This anthology by a group of Oklahoma mystery writers cleverly uses animals to help solve the various crimes. For example, Moira K. Wiley's story, "Old Mack Donald's Ghost", features an emu. One cautionary note--husbands and boyfriends don't fare too well in some of these tales so all of you men be sure to check your egos at the door!!
