Not Just for Arachnid Lovers!
Do you know how to tell if a tarantula is in its burrow? How about how far a jumping spider really jumps? This book is great for any home or classroom. Children love to learn facts about their environment and I'm sure that they would love this book. I found this book to be fun and educational... I even loved it!

A Real Retirement Guide for Real People
Finally, a book on money management that speaks my language! Don't Die Broke! (A Guide to Secure Retirement), by Melvin Jay Swartz, is the original handbook that cuts through all the garbage put out by self-proclaimed financial gurus who sell their 10-steps-to-greater-wealth nonsense on TV infomercials, audio cassettes, and the Internet. Swartz writes for the average person who just wants to make the most of what he or she has and avoid unnecessary costs when making plans for retirement. He seems to care sincerely about the reader. He's not trying to push a product, or even his own service. In fact, he encourages people to seek financial, tax and legal advice only from local professionals who are credentialed, licensed and certified to practice in their areas. Don't Die Broke! is an eye-opener. It warns of the real dangers of taking bad advice that can literally cost people their life savings. Swartz is a straight shooter who avoids jargon and legalese. What a breath of fresh air in this age of canned self-help programs.

Progress in Race Relations
This book is a testament to the progress that can be attained in modern society through an open minded approach to race relations. The author's refusal to allow his beliefs and his writings to be influenced by stereotypes and prejudism gives us a refreshing look into the possibilities that lie ahead of us in the area of race relations. I highly recommend this book to any person: of any age, race, sex, or conviction who is interested in destroying their own preconceived notions concerning racism in a modern world: A must read.

Educational Care
Educational Care, A System for Understanding and Helping Children With Learning Problems at Home and in School by Dr. Mel Levine is a book that all professionals in the field of education should be required to read.

As a special education teacher, the topics Dr. Levin presents are paramount to the education of all children. Today, with curriculum frameworks and standardized testing, general education teachers are being pushed and pulled in too many directions. Teachers in the general education setting have many diverse learners; teachers need the valuable information from this book to assist them in guiding/coaching the children in their charge. It is imperative, as the educational system moves forward and the bulk of students that were once serviced by specialist are now being instructed within the general education setting, that these students are provided with the tools that will assist them in learning and retaining information. Many general education teachers have minimal knowledge of the differentiated practices that can be implemented within their repertoire in educating students with diverse learning needs. Teachers whom have been in the general education setting for the past years have a wealth of knowledge, techniques, and strategies to service their low average, average, and gifted/talented learners. However for children that do no fall within these categories, general education teachers have not been instructed or equipped with strategies to help guide these students with specific learning deficits. Educational Care is an excellent resource for all educators to use to assist them in better developing their craft of teaching.

Educational Care presents a wealth of information regarding weak attention control, phenomena related to: reduced remembering, to chronic misunderstanding, deficient output, delay skill acquisition, and to poor adaptation. In addition, this book has chapters for the provision of education care, assessment and management, and implications and applications for the misinterpreted child. The Appendixes is a valuable resource for every teacher to peruse and use for those students whom could benefit from such helpful planners and organizers.

Educational Care gives tremendous assistance on both fronts:educational strategies in the classroom and strategies that the home caregiver can provide to assist children with learning problems.

This is a book that I will be lending to many colleagues in hopes that they too may learn how to help those students that are struggling in the educational/social setting.

Business Law for Business Dummies
Well, as you can guess by the title I used for this review, I am not a business genius. I'm just like many people who start their own company. I needed help and I got it, from this book, "The Entrepreneur's Business Law Handbook." Sean P. Melvin helped me understand so many aspects of being an entrepreneur, which is what all self-employed people are. His precise, no nonsense approach was refreshing compared to other business books I had read. I especially found the section on incorporation very helpful.

I have no legal background, so I appreciated Mr. Melvin's approach to the material. I would STRONGLY recommend this book to anyone who wants to start a business, or even those who already have their own business. I've bought several copies of the book already and have given it to fellow business associates. Buy the book; you won't regret it.

Plus it's a business deduction... :)

Great book on Chicago ethnic history
This is a very well written, well organized and interesting book about the ethnic history of Chicago. Starting from the early settlers, the authors write about the history of different ethnic groups such as Poles, Ukranians, Germans, Chinese, Japanese and Greeks among others. Most, if not all chapters are written by someone from the ethnic group in question, and each chapter seems to be very well researched. I admire the neutral and scientific writing style. In other words, there is no hint of side taking, even when the authors describe recent and painful conflicts between ethnic groups. This is just how a research book should be.

The book is easy to read, and I found it very illuminating. It is a very good source of information about Chicago. The book traces the history of different ethnic groups in Chicago through the 19th and 20th century, their struggles for adaptation, their neighborhoods, occupations, and life styles. After reading the book, I feel I appreciate the diversity of this great city even more. I learned many things I did not know about this city from this book, and I keep looking for the neighborhoods and landmarks mentioned in the book with interest.

The book is also a very good source of reliable information about American history in general, because the immigration patterns in Chicago and the process of adaptation of the immigrants to American life occured in somewhat similar ways to other large cities, and in several chapters, the authors discuss the immigration of a certain ethnic group to the USA in general, as well as to Chicago in particular.

Finally, I found the book very helpful in terms of information about recent world history. The reasons that led the ethnic groups in question to immigrate to USA and Chicago (the push factors) are shortly discussed in each chapter, and this gives the reader an overall idea about the recent history of each of the nations in question.

The editors of the book did a very good job in ensuring continuity across chapters. Even though each chapter is written by a different author, I did not feel any gaps between chapters, and did not think there were any problems of continuity.

This looked like a thick book with 600+ pages, but I finished it in a few weeks, and I think this was time well spent.

I wish I had read this sooner
I read this during my second year of ophthalmology residency and found it to be incredibly useful. It is easy to read with real, hilarious cases to explain the optics. The authors have a great sense of humor. Believe it or not, optics can be funny. I checked it out from our library, but bought my own copy for home because it is so good.
