Leveling the playing field with the IRS
Very well done book which helped me with my problems with the Irs. The forms that IRS sends when you want to offer a compromise were baffling (just like any government form). The Tax Debt book helps to get through the paper work, and the real life examples in the book are great. You still have to do the footwork, but the IRS will cut your tax bill if you know what you're doing. It wasn't easy to deal with IRS on your own, but it's impossible without a book like this. Knowledge means money when you're fighting the IRS!

A Linguistic Must
This is a wonderful book for the intermediate linguistics student. Though it does start at a basic level, it does jump rather quickly into a more difficult areas. The multiple charts and other illustrations make it especially useful to those who have to "see it" and not just read an explanation. I would definitely recommend this text to anyone interested in linguistics.

Awesome Bible!
This is one awesome Bible! Although the description above says large print the binding of mine says 'Giant Print'. It is great for those with poor vision or want a Bible that is easy on the eyes. The binding is super-high quality. It also includes a dictionary and doctrinal index.

The authoritative biography
First of all, this book is NOT by Edwin M. Stanton, who died in 1869. The authors are Benjamin P. Thomas, the distinguished historian who was also the author of Abraham Lincoln: A Biography, which I read with great appreciation on 22 Jan 1993 and which was published in 1952 and which is generally considered the best one-volume biography of Lincoln at least until David Donald's superlative biography of Lincoln (read by me Feb 4, 1996) came along in 1995 and Harold M. Hyman, the co-author of Equal Justice Under Law: Constitutional Development 1835-1875 (read by me with much approval on 10 July 1982). I found Stanton a good book, tho some of the parts, where the Civil War and the problems with finding a general are reviewed, did not happen to excite me. But there can be little doubt that Stanton did yeoman service during the War and that he played a big role in the North's successful effort. The dramatic events during the dispute between Andrew Johnson and the Radical Republicans in 1866-1868 are detailed well in this book, though very laudatory to Stanton. While I agree with much of the viewpoint of the Radical Republicans I have never felt that the impeachment effort should have succeeded, and I thought the biography of Andrew Johnson by Hans L. Trefousse (which I greatly enjoyed when I read it 31 July 1999)reinforced that feeling for me--and Trefousse is certainly no apologist for the forces against the Radical Republicans. In fact, the course Stanton pursued during the impeachment fight, when he refused to obey the orders of the president of the United States, his commander-in-chief, grate on one accustomed to the current view of presidential power. The book is well-footnoted, with the footnotes where they belong (at the bottom of each page, so one can see whether they need to be read or whether they are merely source notes), but there is, sadly, no bibliography. But as far as I know this is the best biography of Stanton, a man of great interest to any student of the 1860s.

A wonderful Christmas story
The story of the little angel Melvin who cleans his star so well that in the end he wins a competition and has the honor to be the star of Bethlehem really is heartwarming. For a long time Melvin wants to have a star to polish and clean until it shines and finally one day his dream comes true. It's only a little star but it is his. His friend tells him about a star competition and Melvin decides to be part of it. He doesn't think that he stands a chance but he wins against all angels including the big Gabriel. The Lord chooses him to be the star for a special birthday, he will be the star of Bethlehem. I think children can really identify with little Melvin standing up against bigger kids or grown-ups. The illustrations are beautiful and until the last word of the story you have no clue to where this is leading. It is a different christmas story than the ones we usually here but it has the right Christmas spirit in it - a wonderful story and a wonderful book I can highly recommend.

Thinking man's journey
This book contains some of the finest short stories I have ever read. Running the gambit from time travel to overpopulation to pollution, these timeless lessons come at you in a way you'll never forget. Howard Fast appeals to a whole new audience with this work.
This title is difficult to find, and if you do find it, keep both hands on it, because you'll want to share it, and they'll want to keep it!

The introduction to sets is very fast. This is fine, as I fall into the class of people who find the introductions tedious. This is just a warning to anyone looking for a very introductory book: there are cheaper ones which you will understand better than this (Kamke, for example).
However, if you have had a fair amount of experience with logic and some set theory, then this book is great. The author's method of double induction brings together a large number of topics. Cohen's forcing method is presented with crystal clarity, and in a significantly interesting way. Independence proofs are, by their nature, generally tedious and pedantic. Yet the authors managed to make those presented very interesting.
Each chapter starts out with an interesting summary of the main ideas to be covered. This gives the reader a sort of "road map" in each chapter, allowing her to see where the chapter is headed, and how it is going to get there. This sort of thing is very important, but often lacking in mathematical books.
I highly recommend this book.
