Chronicle of a "Communist" witch hunt in Washington State.
False Witness is the story of Prof. Melvin Rader¹s experiences as a target of the Washington State Legislature¹s Committee on Un-American Activities in 1948. In his own words, Rader vividly describes the tactics and procedures used by Albert Canwell and others in this ³investigation². Although eventually able to clear his name, Rader¹s chronicle reveals the civil rights violations which led to the dismissal of three University of Washington professors, punishments for three more, and the abandonment of ³due process² in the rush to find and punish ³Communists². A short, easy, informative read.

A classic adventure story
Mel Ellis was the first author to really grab my attention. Like most kids I only read the books that were assigned to me by my teachers. For my first independent book review I ended up choosing Flight of the White Wolf. What a book! The story of Russ and his wolf was a neverending adventure. It is the book that the reader won't put down. Mel Ellis had me daydreaming for weeks. This is a book that should be available to every child. Let them live the adventure and give them something that they will enjoy reading.

Reviewing the Fundamentals of Economics
As far as basic economic textbooks go, this one is very good. The authors do a great job of putting complex economic theories into terms the average student can easily understand without over-simplifying them. The graphs are always colorful and well labeled, and the real-life examples used in the text really do help the student to see how various theories operate in reality. While the pedagogical devices used throughout the book make the text very easy to learn and study.

A good book for those who work with budding yeast
This is a thorough book on yeast genetics (mainly budding yeast). It gives a vast background on most basic techniques. This includes the basic methods used in the field with some background material. Additional topics are covered (e.g. Ð cloning and recombinant DNA, mutants production, gene expression, as well as topics in cell biology and transport). Those who look for protocols for fission yeast, this is not the book.

The Harlem Cycle: A Rage in Harlem; The Real Cool Killers; The Crazy Kill
Published in Paperback by Canongate Pub Ltd (1998)
Authors: Melvin Van Peebles and Chester B. Himes
Amazon base price: $16.95
Average review score:

underappreciated
This is a typically entertaining entry in Himes' Coffin Ed Johnson/Grave Digger Jones series. The two Harlem police detectives investigate a stabbing at a wake and the usual cast of colorful characters--gamblers, pool sharks, holy-roller preachers, etc.--are on hand.

Himes may well be the best black American author of all time. It seems he was sold short by serious critics because of his status as a "crime writer" & perhaps by mystery fans because of his race, but it appears a major reappraisal of his work is underway and he is finally getting his due.

Excellent
Excellent introduction to the study of the Holiness movement. The book is thorough but not overwhelming, and is indespensible to the study of Protestant Christianity in North America and overseas. This book fills a niche and covers a topic often neglected by the Reformed-dominated American East Coast academy. I highly recommend it.

Superb "all-in-one" introduction to Jewish civil/crim law
There are hundreds of books on Jewish ritual law. This worthy volume, however, is focussed on the criminal and civil laws governing Jewish communities in the diaspora and in Israel. For the lay reader (that is, the non-lawyer) the "textbook" format may be difficult. Each section ends with questions meant to foster discussion and reflection in a law-school classroom environment. The questions group into two patterns: further analytical inquiry or comparative analysis with United States law. In true law school tradition, the questions are designed to stimulate thinking; no answers are suggested and no teachers manual is available. The kind of discourse that only a lawyer could love... Putting aside the chapter-ending questions, the material itself is excellent. Organized coherently, with abundant citations to the Talmudic and halakic sources, this book will carry the reader (layperson or lawyer) into the fascinating labrinths of rulings in such areas as voting rights, family law, artificial insemination, extradition, commercial disputes, criminal responsibility and punishment.
