A must for your vegan library
the New Farm cook book is a must for a vegan's cook book library. perhaps the best recipes in the book are the breakfast & baked goods: Who says pancakes have to have eggs in them!

The book offers helpful tips for making tofu, wheat gluten, tempeh & soy milk. It also has photos and cute cartoons of the folks at the New Farm commune doing their thing. It offers advice on raising vegan children, and vegan nutrition while pregnant. Most of the recipes are easy and very "American" style, like cheese-less mac & cheese, grilled tofu sandwiches, etc. There is also a section on vegan jewish foods, like knishes, that is great. The only thing I dislike about this cookbook is that it tends to call for powdered spices rather then fresh... and you have to admit that nothing beats fresh garlic! Of course, you can always substitute. For the cookie recipes that called for honey I used a mixture of turbinado sugar and maple syrup. it worked fine!

Buy the book! You won't regret it! :-)

The BEST Soy Cookbook EVER!
I love cooking with this book! It has everything from soy yogurt, milk to (my fav) spaghetti balls! The recipes are easy and very delicious. I just ordered another one because mine is falling apart from using it so much! I wish they'd make a spiral bound hard copy! :) The Cooks that contributed the recipes are awesome and I'd love to go down to the FARM to take cooking lessons. The BEST book if you're just turning vegitarian and are looking for different soy choices for variety. I LOVE IT!

Recipes for making soy products at home and using them.
Undeniably the best vegetarian cookbook I've ever encountered. The book is packed with recipes using tofu, tempeh, soymilk, and soy yogurt. In addition, it includes no-fail instructions about how to make these products at home. How to make soy ice cream, soy cheese and wheat gluten are also included.

This is the most-used cookbook on my shelf and has been for 11 years! I'm about ready to need a new copy...

Plantation Princess from Another Planet
Since moving to the South from NYC 10 years ago, I have been discovering wonderful storytellers like Fannie Flag and Rebecca Wells. I have just discovered another in Louise G. Mann. This "little" book of vignettes is a BIG book in humour and poignant stories. With her book Miss Mann was able to make me laugh while telling very touching stories about growing up in the Delta. I read the book in December and recommended it to my Book Club for January. Here are some of the comments from the Book Club's January meeting: "funny, laughed out loud", "story of herself with self-confidence, ddin't follow rules, author willing to reveal things about her childhood that were not accepted in her society", "astounded when someone is in the forest and can see the trees, can recognize was universal when it is not in your world "neighbors borrow breast implants the way they borrow cake pans"", "a slice of southern americana, we are storytellers in the South".

Congratulations to Miss Mann on an excellent FIRST. I hope she is busy working on a second book, I can't hardly wait!

Plantation Princess from Another Planet
I ordered a copy of Plantation Princess from Another Planet recently. It arrived at my office, and I tore into the package. I immediately started reading it, and began laughing outloud until I was crying! I read passages to my coworkers, and soon had everyone in stitches. I went home that night and did a "reading" for my wife. She soon was doubled over, too. With "Princess", Louise G. Mann has captured the essence of growing up in the South in a delightful and very amusing way. You'll find yourself unable to put it down as you read about the escapades of life in Shumard, Arkansas. This very affordable little book makes the perfect gift for any occasion from birthdays to bridal showers; graduation to get well wishes. Read Plantation Princess from Another Planet with a box of tissues nearby. You'll need to mop up all those tears of laughter!

Everybody should read this wonderful book.
The Birchbark House was a good book and I think Louise Erdrich is a wonderful author and illustrator. The part I liked the most was when the main character's, Omakayas, grandmother told her a story in the winter. It was about her grandmother when she was a little girl. A sad event in the book was when the visitor came and brought smallpox to the village. It was also sad when Omakayas's little brother died. All in all, everybody should read this book.

A chilren's book enjoyed by an adult
Louise Erdrich is my favorite author so when her children's book came out, I was determined to read it! It held my interest with the loverly interpretations of Ojibway language, the glossary of terms at the end to help me to say the words as I read. I was amazed at the depth of my sorrow reading about the smallpox, the death of her brother, the love for her crow and the amazing heart of Old Tarrow. This book will win many awards. I have already passed on my copy to a co-worker who is just finishing the Little House series so this book gives the perspective of a Native American girl in my home state of Minnesota.

One of the finest books I've read in some time.
The Seamstress is a spellbinding book, and is certainly unlike other books about the Holocaust. A moving posthumous memoir, this book should make everyone's "must-read" list. The author tells her remarkable and unusual story with grace and power. She was a rural Romanian Jewish woman born at the time of the rise of the Nazis and virulent anti-Semitism in early part of the 20th century. This book reminds us of the importance not only of courage itself, but how courage combined with other strengths can permit us to survive (if not always overcome) evil. A fine, fine book.

An amazing story of one woman's survival against the odds
I simply could not put down Mrs. Seren Tuvel's book. This is truely one of the best books that I have ever read. This is a truely fine book, written by a remarkable woman who lived to tell of the horrors of the Holocaust and her strong will and determination to survive. This book I would highly reccomend to anyone. It is sad that Mrs. Tuvel-Bernstein passed away some years ago, but her spirit lives on through her amazing story. This is one of the best Holocaust memoirs ever published.

A Review for The Seamstress: A Memior of Survival
When I was assigned to read a book for my Freshman English class, I decided to read about the Holocaust. When I picked out The Seamstress: A Memior of Survival, I could tell it was going to be a book I wouldn't be able to put down. After I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. To learn what Seren went through to survive makes me feel really lucky for where I am today. Myself being 15, knowing if I was in Seren's place I would be away from home , being a seamstress- I know I couldn't handle that. How Seren, Ellen, Lilly, and Ester stayed together through the torture of the SS guards, made them live longer. When things seemed as if they couldn't get any worse, they did. And to survive through something that horrible is amazing. And for her to retell her story, remembering those memories that had to take a lot. I feel more educated reading this book, learning what it was really like, but knowing I'll never really know what it was really like.

Unlikely Romance of Kate Bjorkman

The Unlikely Romance of Kate Bjorkman
This is a wonderful book. If possible I would give it 10 stars! I have read it over and over again. It is a teen romance novel about a likeable and realistic girl. This novel holds a certain reality to it, unlike any of the other romance novels that all seem to have the same ending. Kate is an average teenager (self-consious, and nothing close to perfect) who fell in love with her brother's best friend. He went off to college. After a year or so, Kate's older brother brings him home to spend christmas with Kate and her family. What will happen? Welp, that's for me to know and you to find out! It is a wonderful book, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

This book was humorous, and well written
This book is a must read for anyone out there who loves a very real romance. This is not the romance with the skinny, petite, gorgeous female, and the handsome, strong, popular male. This is a very realistic novel about two unsuspecting people who happen to fall in love. The relationship between all the characters in so real, you can feel all the emotions they all feel. It's like Kate (the main character) is talking directly to you in a conversation. Once you pick up this book it is so hard to put it down. You can't tell what will happen untill you read it all the way to the last word. I definately recommend it to anyone who craves a good romance and even anyone who doesn't!

A great Christmas YA novel--witty and well written.
Louise Plummer has taken the romance novel to a new level, and YA readers will get a kick out of how she has fun with the conventions of romance novels while at the same time spinning an enjoyable, and funny, story about a girl who falls in love. For teachers, this book presents many opportunities to discuss writing and the writing process; Kate, the narrator, includes revision notes that reflect on what she has written and how she might revise her romance novel.

Sexy, Captivating & Fun
I have stumbled upon a great new writer and her name is Louise Bagshawe. Way more fun than a chick-lit book, FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS is a tale of deceit, romance and cattiness in the social circles of Manhattan. Louise Bagshawe has a gift for drawing the reader in and never letting go until the very last page.

FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS is the story of Diana Verity. The novel opens with the very demure, very British, and very princess-like Diana on the morning of her wedding to Ernie Foxton. Ernie has just been named head of a huge publishing house in New York, and after the wedding, the two are heading to New York to live. It doesn't take Diana long to find her footing in the top social circles in Manhattan. Her weekly dinner parties are a hit, she's getting all sorts of great publicity, and making good friends with the highest ranking society ladies in NY. What Diana doesn't realize is that her life, her marriage and her social standing is all one big game, and it seems she is playing it a little too well for some people's tastes. She ends up finding out about her husband's affair, and refuses to sit back and take it quietly. She leaves and tries to make it on her own assuming Ernie will come running after her. He doesn't, but Diana soon realizes that maybe she doesn't need Ernie. Will Diana pick herself back up and regain her place in society? Will she find the one true love she never had in Ernie? All these questions are answered, and getting to the answers is all the fun. Highly recommended!

Captivating!!
It was hard to put this book down once I got started, as the story line is excellent and filled with great entertainment.

FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS delves into the lives of one social butterfly, Diana Foxton and her rich husband Ernie Foxton a successful head of a publishing empire.
Ernie relies heavily on Diana for lots of mortal support, for she has that personal touch filled with lots of class which is imperative for him when he entertains and wants to impress his business associates. As a "stay at home" wife who lunches daily with her aristocratic friends when she's not busily buying up the best in designers clothes, shoes, perfume and jewellery, her face is constantly splashed across the newspapers showing off her stunning good looks and her fashionable tastes.

However, all does not go well for very long, as she soon finds out her husband is having a torrid affair. She catches him right in the act so to speak, and leaves him immediately trying to keep her pride in tact.

Watch Diana move from riches to rags as she tries to recapture the life she once enjoyed, as her so called friends wait around with baited breath longing to see how this great lady will make it on her own. Does she have the brains to reestablish her place in society as well as a place in the business world, or is she just another pretty face with no change in her pocketbook? This you'll see for yourself in Ms. Bagshawe's new novel.

This could be a nice birthday gift for a sister or a best buddy.

Sexy, 'Can't put it down for a second' Summer Read.
This book was one of those wonderful books that upset you when it is over because you must say goodbye to the characters. At first I was sure the herione was pure fluff, but the growth and integrity she exhibits made it so enjoyable, I defy anyone not to respect her courage by the end of the book. Very empowering to women, yet Bagshawe is ruthless about her character's flaws. The hero, 'Micheal' is enough to make any woman gasp and pant a little even though at times she wants to throttle him. It is a rip roaring ride! Where can we get more of her books?

You don't have to be a sci-fi fan to love this book!
I was somewhat reluctant to read this book because I am not a big fan of science fiction. However, I am so glad I read it! This is a very captivating story full of excitement and adventure, but also full of so much more. I found this book to be loaded with very deep meaning about life, humanity, and faith. The author was definitely trying to convey some interesting ideas about humanity and society, and I found those ideas to be fascinating and full of some important truths. This book opened my mind and really got me thinking about a lot of things.

This book will grab you right from the beginning, but I did find it to get just a little confusing in some places towards the end. However, overall I would definitely say it is a page-turner and well worth your time, not just for the entertainment value but also for the ideas that it contains. I highly recommend this book, even if you are not a fan of science fiction. Read it -- I feel confident that you will be glad you did!

A masterpiece of scifi-fantasy
Only a very few people are capable of combining science fiction and fantasy, and even fewer can make it something that captures you as this book does.

The book starts off with a young woman on a planetary anthropological mission, on a world called Andrecia. Andrecia is medieval and primitive, and in no way capable of handling the knowledge that advanced, spacefaring societies exist beyond their world.

But the heroine, Elana, soon becomes involved in a plot concerning the potential invasion of Andrecia. But it is near-impossible for her to save the Andrecians, superstitious and magic-believers, from an invasion.

Nearby is also a medical guy, Jarel, who feels remorse at the intentions of the Exploration Corps. They do not consider the population of Andrecia to be sentient and worthy of their notice, and promise to bring destruction down on Andrecia. There is also the son of an Andrecian woodcutter named Georyn, who identifies Elana as the Enchantress of the Stars. He believes that she has come for the purpose of testing him, if he can defeat a fearsome dragon in the forests.

This clash of the sophisticated and the simple is well-drawn and almost saddening at times. Georyn's faith in Elana's "magic" is truly touching, without making him appear ignorant or dumb. Elana is an excellent, intelligent heroine who captures your sympathy and does not let go. Her struggles with integrity and truth do not transcend the reader, but are ones that you feel as much as she does.

Too often in books there is a clash between magic and science, but in this particular book there is no clash. Perhaps that is partly due to the writing style -- half the magic seems to be in the otherworldly descriptions, interspersed with more grounded prose in the right places. (And Engdahl definitely knows how to write a beginning that will suck you in) Though some things like "Imperial Corps" and "Federation" imply a pseudo-Star-Trekkian space opera, this is none of the kind. This is a thoughtful work, filled with intelligent questions that will stimulate as it entertains.

This goes on the shelf beside Tolkien and the Riddlemaster trilogy.

A thrilling combination of science fiction and fantasy
In her novel Enchantress from the Stars, Sylvia Louise Engdahl combines science fiction and fantasy to weave together an intricate plot and tell an entertaining and interesting story. The time in which this story takes place is not clear. When the book begins, it seems as if Engdahl is writing of the future. As the story progresses, it seems as if she is writing of the past. In the end of the book, the two times intertwine so that it seems as if time does not exist at all.

The plot is set on the planet of Andrecia, home to a poverty-stricken, primitive society in which the people live in small rural villages and are governed by a monarchy. In one of the poor Andrecian villages, at the edge of the dreaded Enchanted Forest, lives a woodcutter with his four sons, all of whom dream of better, brighter futures. While the three eldest brothers wish for power, gold, and treasure, the youngest, Georyn, wants only wisdom equal to that of his King. Thus, when word travels to them that the person who slays the dragon inhabiting the Enchanted Forest will receive from the King whatever reward he desires, all four brothers are eager to set out at once. However, the dragon is actually a giant machine, or rockchewer, built by a far more technologically-advanced society, the Imperials. The Imperials, who are planning to take over the planet, have created the rockchewer to clear the land so they can build a colony. As the Andrecians appear one by one to Òslay the dragon,Ó they are paralyzed by the ImperialÕs stun-guns, making them defenseless captives.

Another society of people, even more advanced than the Imperials, is determined to stop them from taking over the planet. Elana and Evrek, two teenagers, and ElanaÕs father journey to Andrecia to help the native Andrecians revolt against the Imperials and scare them off the planet. ElanaÕs people have the unique ability to move objects with their minds and to communicate telepathically. As a result, Georyn and his brothers believe Elana to be an Enchantress. Through many tests and a developing friendship, she teaches Georyn how to control the movement of objects and prepares him for his face-off with the dragon.

"Enchantress From the Stars" is an engrossing book that keeps the reader on their toes from the very first chapter. Weaving together two different genres allows Engdahl to interest readers of all kinds. "Enchantress" is not only a story about dragons and spaceships, it is also about testing the true strength of love. A definite must read!

The Gotta Have Parenting Book
Kid Cooperation : How to Stop Yelling, Nagging and Pleading and Get Kids to Cooperate is a great book. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. This is a book that I would recommend everone to read. There are great tips on how to get your kids to cooperate, even if your child is a toddler. My son is 18 months old and has responded very well to all of the techniques that I have used in this book. He listens to me the first time I tell him to do something, instead of me having to repeat myself numerous times to the point of yelling. This book will change your life and will give you a new outlook on how to parent your children. Its a definite must-read.

The only parenting book you'll need!
The minute I saw this book on the shelf I had to have it. I wanted to stop yelling, nagging, pleading and get my kids to cooperate. Who wouldn't? I have three children and have been using the many ideas in this book since I purchased it a year and a half ago. Each time I read it - either cover to cover or just glancing over the great reminder pages - I gain more useful ideas to help me be a successful parent. As my children enter new stages in their life and new parenting challenges are faced, I have the confidence to tackle them head-on by using the techniques that I have learned in this book. I have recommended Kid Cooperation to all my friends and I highly recommend it to you as well. I can't imagine what my family life would be like if it wasn't for this first rate parenting book. It is a must have for every parent.

Life changing! A "must have" book for all parents!
Parenting would have to be the most difficult (yet rewarding!) job in the world. Of all parenting challenges, discipline is probably at the top of most parents' list. Every parent wants to raise kids who are responsible and caring people. But HOW on earth are we supposed to achieve this? Often the only blueprint we have for discipline comes from our own parents, and involves methods such as spanking and shouting, which are neither effective nor respectful to children.

Thank goodness for Elizabeth Pantley and her wonderful book Kid Cooperation: How to stop yelling, nagging and pleading and get kids to cooperate! I must admit to being somewhat sceptical when I come across claims such as those in this book title. "If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is", rings in my ears. However, I am DELIGHTED to be able to say that this book not only lives up these claims but MORE.

In Kid Cooperation, Elizabeth Pantley shares parenting skills that are LIFE CHANGING! I do not say that lightly! This book will change your life! The wonderful thing is that the skills outlined are easy to learn and implement, they actually WORK, and probably most importantly in my opinion, they are kind to and respectful of children. Elizabeth's style is very readable, positive and not at all preachy. She allows you to determine areas needing improvement in a way that leaves you feeling both hopeful and positive.

The first chapter comprises a quiz to determine your current discipline style. Are you permissive, democratic, balanced or autocratic? (I erred on the "too democratic" side!) The good news is that, whatever your current style, you CAN find help in this wonderful book.

The remaining chapters contain the gems of wisdom which fulfil the claims on the front cover! Chapter 2 teaches the keys to successful parenting - take charge; think; when you say it, mean it; use skill. Chapter 3 covers cooperation and how to achieve it in your home. Chapter 4 discusses punishment versus discipline. Chapter 5 teaches ways to build your child's self-esteem. Chapter 6 is all about sibling relationships. Chapter 7 deals with parent anger. Chapter 8 discusses ways to look after yourself and the relationship with your parenting partner. Chapter 9 consists of some common discipline questions with several suggestions on how to deal effectively with each. Each chapter ends with a very helpful "reminder page", which can be copied and placed in appropriate spots around the home. This really makes learning the new skills manageable!

Throughout the book, examples of situations and dialogue (some from the author's own family experiences) make understanding easy. Many readers will see themselves and their kids in the examples (I know I did!) Elizabeth makes it simple to identify ineffective parenting AND to replace it with techniques that actually WORK. I have personally used many of the skills taught in this book with my own child and am thrilled to report the improvement in harmony in our household. Some examples which have been particularly useful to us are the "5-3-1-go" (when leaving a playground for example), making objects talk (great for things like teeth cleaning time!), and using happy faces and sad faces on a daily chart.

I thoroughly recommend this book! My ONLY complaint is that I didn't get it when my child was younger!
