The ABC's of Food : A Study of Food as History, Story, Tradition and Nutrition

Authors: Louise Ulmer, Richard S. Calhoun, and Anne Catharine Blake

Amazing what I learned!
ABC'S OF FOOD encyclopedia is one of the most interesting and informative books I have. For example, I assumed in eating the abalone that we ate the body. In the ABC'S OF FOOD I learned it's the foot we eat. It even explained how to cook and tenderize the foot. Most fascinating were the how and where foods, such as Hot Cross Buns, originated from. With the explanation of terms, such as Dry Water, I can now answer customer questions. I work in the food area of the largest retail chain in the world and I am asked about lots of products. Now if I don't know the answer, I use my ABC's book!
Also, reading about such down home wild foods as chinquepins
(chinky pins), hickory nuts, muskadine grapes, and pawpaws brought back childhood memories of following my daddy through the woods, looking for these, along with sassafras roots for the tea in the winter for better health. And if I got hungry while there, we ate veenie weenies (Vienna Sausages)with crackers. I wonder how many of the readers have some of the same fond memories. It would be very interesting to hear from them. I hope there is a follow up book VERY soon! Linda Clark,
former Bakery Manager for Ingles, Consumers, Wal-Mart.

Fascinating and Challenging
It is a pleasure to read a food book with such vast information. With its tightly written entries, I can absorb knowledge while relaxing. I have worked with freshly prepared food and fresh produce all my life. My father is an avid gardener.
With my past 30 years of experience in restaurant work and as a produce specialist, it is uplifting to keep learning from this book. The ABC'S OF FOOD has fascinated and challenged me to broaden my horizons. I highly recommend THE ABC'S OF FOOD to any age group. --Joan Harness, Wal-Mart Superstore Produce Specialist

ABC Arrangements
Ulmer and Calhoun have presented a comprehensive food library that is sprinkled with stories and anecdotes that keep the reader at full attention. It is easy to read, concise yet useful by its brevity, and gives the reader what he is looking for. It has both utility and entertainment. Bravo Ulmer and Calhoun!

A must read
After a friend of mine recommended Gluck's poetry to me, I bought Ararat at the local bookstore and it sat on my shelf for months. Finally, when I found the time, I sat down and read it. I thought about it. And then I read it again. It is a phenomenal book. What I especially enjoy is Gluck's approach to writing a complete sequence of poems, which she then encloses in a "book." Story or myth, call it what you will--behind these poems is a disciplined passion, a sort of genius that I appreciate. READ IT, I promise you won't be sorry.

how I discovered my favorite poet on this planet
Through "ARARAT" I discovered Louise Glück,my most favorite living poet on this planet.Every book she created is deep, elegant and mystifying.

Her Best Work
Probably the most influential book of poetry published in the language in the last two decades; solidified (and spawned a generation of mimics of) what is now widely recognized as The Gluck Style: spare, unblinking but not unflinching, tough, mournful, deceptively simple. The book, rightfully, that all her other books (except The Wild Iris) may be judged. "Long ago I was wounded.." it begins. Gluck turns away from alluding to a specific mythology (though she runs back to it in Meadowlands and Vita Nova; though, in fact, Ararat itself is a Jewish myth) to read the mythology of domesticity: her father the hero, her sister the Fury, her mother like Dido, herself like Euridice, whose only hope of escaping is to turn completely away. But Gluck was "born to a vocation," to bear witness to the great and ordinary mysteries, the death of her father, the death of a sister, the ache and hunger repeated infinitely within her drama of four, the view of her family that will reduce her to ashes in the act of witnessing. "Like Adam, I was the firstborn. Believe me, you never heal. You never forget the ache in your side where something was taken to make another person." She accomplishes all: poetry, drama, narrative. And somehow she escapes the cheap glamour of confessional poetry. These are painfully honest pieces that she somehow also keeps at arm's length, to examine like an artifact. By all means, read this book. The language and imagery and syntax are easy, unintimidating, and then you realize that she has laid out quite plainly the way people love and harbor and reject one another. "Long ago, I was wounded. I thought that pain meant I was not loved. It meant I loved."

The Art of the Violin

Very good book,
Not a lot of explanations but lots and lots of exercises I am a violin teacher and I sugest the book to all my students... but most things in the book still need explanations, Very good exercise book if nothing else. Fingering has changed from the time the book was originaly written, but still a very usefull book if you would like to use the fingering and style that players in Beethoven's time used. I sugest the book to all beginners and advanced players.

Encyclopedic but with loads of stuff to play.
As an adult beginner, "The Art" gives me everything I need to complement my lessons - answers to basic questions of theory and technique, progressive exercises, technical principles illustrated by hundreds of phrases from the masters. And scales, scales, scales. Especially nice are the complete two-part scales of Cherubini.

Must-buy for string players not least for the bowingchapter
This is one of the great string-playing books. Please buy it and read it---you will not be disappointed.

wow. just wow.
wow! i often find myself gravitating toward the book, repeatedly pressing the same buttons over and over! this is what i would classify 'a real pageturner.' i couldn't put it down; i read it in one sitting! thank you, ms. hananan.

Thrilling from beginning to end
When I first picked up this book I was uncertain as to how I would like it. I'm normally a straight-sight girl so when I saw this book had sound I was a little hesitant. All my worries were soon dispelled however because when I started reading and pushing the sound buttons I was immediately drawn into the 'barnyard mystery.' The determination of Rose and Sally Dog in their search for Mommy's watch drew me right in. I particularily loved the character of Emma Chicken. I haven't seen such life in a chicken since I last watched 'Chicken Run.' Reliving all of these memories makes me want to go reread the book right now. You know, I think I will.

Fantastic!
This is an absolutely fantastic book by a pair of wonderful authors. When we read it we had a whole group of young people gathered around, laughing, joking and enjoying the fabulous story. We couldn't wait to find out what had become of the watch. We couldn't put it down!

I highly recommend this book
An inspiring read by a sensitive and personable seer. Includes personal stories that make this subject accessible. Topics include dealing with the death of a loved one, precognition, time, and karmic relationships; all presented via fascinating and real stories. Offers comfort, hope and clarity to the deeper meaning of life.

HEART-LINKS
This book gives me hope and comfort. After losing a loved one I have been searching desperately and exploring my spirituality. Heart-Links is filled with stories of wonderful connections to loved ones. Louise's compassion and caring comes through as so much of what she does. Her sharing of her incredible gifts shows me how I can also become a multi-sensory intuitive being. This book has brought me some peace in my heart. The exercises will give me tools to guide me. I feel that people of many different beliefs and religions can benefit from the lessons and stories. I encourage everyone searching to read this wonderful book!

Inspiring and heartwarming spiritual journey
This book captivated me. Ms. Hauck tells of true life challenges, from a perspective of love and insight, and offers tools for dealing with obstacles in our lives. Her ability to make sense out of others' seemingly overwhelming problems is inspiring and uplifting, offering us all a glimpse at the possibilty of enlightenment and understanding of what life and death are all about. I've read it several times and have given copies of it to many people.

Silly, Fun, and Educational Too
This book is an absolute scream!

Believe it or not, my college bookstore actually carried this item. As a pre-exam stress break, I picked it up and started thumbing through it. I laughed so hard that I had to buy it.

_Bunches...of Bunnies_ is a book written to teach children the wonders of multiplication in a fun, silly way. Low on text, and high on pictures, this is meant for the just-learning-to-read set.

I just think the pictures are so adorable. Unlike a typical children's book, in _Bunches...of Bunnies_, the expressive and sometimes mischevious bunnies are featured doing everything from going to school to playing pool.

I can't wait until I become an aunt, as I plan to buy this for all my nieces and nephews.

An easy way to learn squares
I had this book when it first came out, but rediscovered it recently. What I always remembered was the simple but engaging way the multiplicative squares (1 x 1, 2 x 2, etc.) are presented -- with increasingly large groups of bunnies. Easy rhymes and darling pictures help beginning mathematicians grasp the underlying concept of multiplication without being overt about it. Younger childern will simply like all the bunnies doing silly things.

One of the Best Bunny Books Ever
I had this book when I was a child, and has remained with me through the years. Children will enjoy how the bunnies multiply, and the repetition of phrases is an excellent learning tool. Also, the rhyming will keep their attention. Simply a wonderful, snuggle-up-with-your-kids and read it book! Both parents and children alike will love it.

Very good
This was exciting and adventurous, but the ending was slightly unsatisfactory.

Chilling and wonderful
This book blew me away the first time I read it, and even now as an adult I still love reading it. The characters feel like real kids with real problems and imperfections. The descriptions are vivid. The science fiction aspects are thrilling and not dumbed down for kids. What I loved most was the question of what's real and what's hysteria, how the kids decide who and what to trust when they can't turn to adults anymore. Also check out Moonwind by the same author, which is almost as good.

An exciting story about a space accident
Calling B for Butterfly is an absorbing science fiction story about a survivors from a space ship that was hit by an asteroid. The space ship was out of control and the survivors boarded a life ferry and were trying to get back to Earth. At first they thought it was hopeless, but they regained their confidence when they found the radio and called for help. The other space ship received the call and decided to rescue the life ferry. Even though it wasn't very exciting, it still has an interesting plot. If you like science fiction, you will like this book.

A positive, supportive book for kids and moms alike!
My daughter read this book when she was in high school. She was so excited to find out that so many kids had experiences and feelings like hers! She has had all her closest friends read the book so they would understand her and her life better. There are essays in here that are suitable for nearly any age child.

A Nice, Positive Book About Lesbian Moms And Their Kids
Non-fiction book with the personal stories of sons and daughters of lesbian mothers. I liked it a lot, it's a positive book for anyone who has a gay or lesbian family or anyone who is interested in the topic.

A Wonderful Book!
An absorbing compilation of stories of the lives of sons and daughters of lesbian mothers. The diverse group of authors range in age from seven years to middle aged and they all provide a wonderful record of how they feel about having "different" mothers

What a wonderful book!
Reading it was such a pleasure. I cried and laughed with those heartwarming stories and admired all these people who really love dogs, and who can appreciate what a dog can give you. A special gift you can't get unless you live with those little Friends. Almost all the books I have about dogs deal with their characters and ilnesses etc, but this book has a special place on my shelf because it speaks to the heart. I highly recommend it.

This book was a pleasure to read.
This was a very enjoyable book to read. The people who contributed their stories shared many of the memories that I have of my own dogs. I recomend this book to all dog lovers. If I could give a six star rating to the book I would. I hope that the book has helped the Humaine Society.

Great book with many interesting and heartfelt K-9 stories
This is a great book -- especially if you are crazy about dogs! The book is a collection of short stories written by all types of people -- rich, poor, famous, lonely, happy (you name it) -- and their canine friends. EXCELLENT GIFT idea for friends or relatives that love those furry faces. Also, a great gift for someone who is grieving over the loss of a dog. Definately a worthy purchase -- all proceeds go to the SPCA. The editor/author must have a big heart.

ADDENDUM to finds4u's Review: Here's The Jacket Blurb...
To summarize our earlier review, this is one of the most comprehensively educational works we've ever come across.

We'd wanted to include the full dust jacket blurb for the 1978 1st Edition, ahead of its complete 3-Volume Topics List, as an additional public service (since Amazon doesn't happen to display an editorial review for these scarce but valuable works) -- but we were concerned about exceeding our 1,000 word limit.

So, here it is as a supplement (again, we'd like to REQUEST A COMPARATIVE REVIEW from anyone familiar with the additions and changes incorporated into the 12/2001 2nd Edition; diplomats and/or scholars, please pass this along):

------------------------------

"The Encyclopedia of American Foreign Policy is a selective reference work containing specially commissioned essays that explore concepts, themes, doctrines, and distinctive policies in the history of American foreign relations. The essays range in coverage from broad concepts such as isolationism and national self-determination to specific topics such as the Monroe Doctrine and the China Lobby.

This topical approach presents to serious readers - students, academicians, government officials, journalists, politicians, and the interested layman - an authoritative compendium of essays that analyze the development, application, and meaning of basic concepts in foreign policy.

The ninety-five essays in this volume are all based on the most recent scholarship, and many of them deal with topics that have not previously been the subject of consistent investigation and systematic analysis. Even in those essays that deal with material that has received considerable scholarly attention, the authors offer original syntheses and interpretations. All topics are discussed within a meaningful historical context and in a manner not available elsewhere.

The authors were not required to adhere to any standard methodology or ideological model. Among the foremost scholars in their respective fields, they have written with complete freedom. The result is not the conventional chronological account of American foreign policy but wide-ranging discussions that cover a broad political spectrum, from Left to Right.

The Encyclopedia of American Foreign Policy: Studies of the Principal Movements and Ideas reflects the importance of American foreign policy in the contemporary world. It is a comprehensive survey of thoughtful analyses, which enriches and clarifies foreign policy and the concepts and rhetoric associated with it. It is an undertaking unique in the historiography of American foreign relations."

SUPERB In-Depth Survey: Check Out The DJ Blurb &Topics List!
This is one of the most comprehensively educational works we've ever come across. The older 1st edition is now a bargain, with the bulk of its articles, covering pre-1978 events/issues, still holding great validity. They would make valuable supplementary copies in a school or public library, or highly informative reference works in a private one. We're anticipating as much fun with our copies over the next couple of years as we had with War And Peace!

WE INVITE A COMPARATIVE REVIEW from anyone familiar with the additions and updates in the 12/2001 Second Edition; diplomats and/or scholars, kindly pass this on....

Here for your delectation is the 1st Edition's complete 3-Volume Topics List (if it all fits: Volume 3 ends with "Unconditional Surrender"):
