Necessary book for the young performer!
I teach private voice to many young female singers and would be absolutely lost without this book! There are are a wealth of contemporary AND classic songs.....and I have found that, luckily, my students love the majority of the material included in this book. Even the hardest to please young singer can find something here. Helpful.too, is the CD that comes with it.

Great!!!!
I audition for musical theatre a lot. This book let me practice without an accompianist. I also had a different song for every audition. It has great songs. There were tons of great songs for sopranos and a few for altos. This is a great investment for musical theatre performers.

Hilarious!
I began reading this book for an english class at about 3 in the morning and after reading only a few pages I just could not put it down. There were times where I was laughing so hard I had to cover my mouth because I didn't want to wake-up my roomates. Plummer is an amazing writer, her essay's are inspiring, and original. This is a book that I have been recommending to all of my friends. If you like clean humor and wit then this book is for you.

One of the best FUN books i have read
This was one of the best books on life's little experiences that i have ever read. I really couldn't stop reading the funny and sometimes embarrassing momments of Louis Plummer. She is such a gifted writer. I went out and bought 5 more copies to give as gifts. Louis Plummer makes life come alive and makes everyone to record their little life experiences and by doing so realize the joy we all share in life. I loved it what more can i say.

essential!
I've collected a small library of herb books over the years, and this is by far the one I reach for the most.

This has to be one of my best books in my collection
I would have to say that more times than I care to count, I have gone to this book to look for information that just was not in my others. I am working on collecting as much reputable material as I can get my hands on. This one is definatly worth every penny I paid. I think that you would enjoy it if you are looking for a book that goes that extra mile to give you more information. I have only a few words for you, "Buy it, you won't regret it!" I love my copy.

Comprehensive introduction
I really liked this book. The first six chapters are a little hard to get through, but the rest of the book is well worth the effort.

The chapters on interviewing, what to take with you, and market research are great. I learnt a lot from Zobel, her writing is friendly, helpful and crammed with useful and unusual facts.

All here--nitty gritty details plus broad overview, too!
Zobel does a superb job of both introducing the novice to the work of the travel writer while at the same time providing the type of tips & insight even experienced travel writers will find stimulating. The sections on marketing are some of the best I've seen in any book on writing!

a great book, especially for peace lovers
this book is great. Personally i like war books like redwall, but this was equally good. There were good characters and all that good stuff. the only bad thing about the book was names that sounded like jibberish. I really only give it a 4.5 but that wasnt an option for my star rating.

This book shows that through non-violence peace is possible.
Of all of the books by Louise Lawrence that I have read, this one gripped me the most. I loved the perspective of a race that was on the brink of extinction and how it showed that if you bind together and use words and reason then you can create everlasting peace.

Fundamental Ways To See That We Want The Same Thing
This is a wonderful book, written for both men and women to read. It succinctly puts into words ideas that many women continue to struggle with about their identity. It also points out that many men haven't a clue of the fundamental psyche of women.

I believe that in reading this book, many readers will truly realize how powerful women can be, and how much better our relationships with men will be, because this book explodes dependency myths.

My favorite passages in this book are:

"Women help perpetuate the myth of the strong man, for if there is a strong man a woman can imagine that she is safe, that she is being cared for and looked after."

"Because women unconsciously do not expect satisfactory emotional nurturance and understanding from their partners, men's inadequacy in giving this nurturance is to some extent accepted and even anticipate by women."

"When women do express their needs, it often comes out as a criticism. When a woman experiences disappointments as a result of the emotional attention and care she so desperately wants, there is a buildup of emotional upset, because while she may expect that she won't get it, she still feels such great need. The woman may declare that she doesn't feel happy in the relationship, that he doesn't give enough emotionally, and so on. He wants her to be more specific, because he doesn't know what she's talking about. He responds to the criticism with anger, which frightens her. She finds it hard to be more specific. She wonders why he doesn't know what she means."

"The psychological fit is that the woman feels her needs are too great, and so the defenses that the man has constructed against his own feelings of inadequacy in the arena of emotional nurturance, seem necessary because of what appears to be the woman's insatiability."

"Men look to sex as a way to affirm their identity as well as a means to contact. Women often trade sex as though it were a commodity in their search for security, warmth, affection, love, and economic protection."

"She told him he didn't need to have answers or interpretations, but that she would appreciate a hug and some questions. She'd like him to try and get into her shoes just for a minute to see what she was feeling and then step out of them and relate to her with tenderness and understanding."

When you, male or female, really pay close attention to each of the above quotes, and think about your experiences, you are free to get what you are really looking for in your relationship.

I wish every woman would read this book
This is, by far, the best, most informative book I've read in a very long time. Intelligently and clearly written, WHAT DO WOMEN WANT exposes the way society shapes our roles as women and men. It's categorized as a "women's studies" book, but it could just as easily be in the psychology/self-help section (if Berkeley Books ever reads this--please put it in psychology!). Here, at last, is a book which is able to EXPLAIN why men and women have intimacy problems, sexual hang-ups, control issues, dependency problems. While the focus would seem to be on women and the source of their dependency issues, the book also explores the matter from the man's point of view in a way that is both respectful and enlightening. This isn't a male-bashing book; rather, it is a thorough look at the history and societal forces which shape us as men and women--and which create the misunderstandings and relationship problems that ultimately lead couples to divorce courts or marriage counselers. Throughout the book, we're given examples of couples whom the authors had counseled. We get, firsthand, an entire range of intimacy problems from the points of view of real men and women. Their stories are then illuminated by the authors in terms of gender roles and expectations. What I particularly like is the last section, "New Directions," which offers concrete ways that men and women can begin to face our vulnerabilities and foster the intimacy and connections that we so crave. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in understanding how the dynamics of gender roles play out in their own relationships. Do you want to feel more connected to others? Do you want to learn how to communicate more with your mate? Do you want to know how your own upbringing (the dysfunction in it) affects your approach to yourself, your body, men, sex, relationships, etc.? Then this book is for you. I'm amazed that this book hasn't done better than the Harriet Lerner books (Dance of Deception, etc.), because it's so much more well organized, useful, well written, informative. I'd encourage the authors to get this book over into the psychology section of the book stores! It deserves more notice.

Delightful story and beautiful illustrations.
I purchased this book for my daughter, a teacher of elementary age children. The story is very touching and illustrates the bond between a teacher and students. It would make a wonderful gift for the child just entering school or for a special teacher!

Beautiful story -- wonderful for a teacher!
This is a wonderfully written story (book is in a protective sleeve) about a teacher who has a "secret" locket around her neck. The children in her class speculate what could be inside of the locket [great to encourage class prediction]. Without giving away the ending, the locket contains all of the things she holds close to her heart... Illustrations are beautiful and creative! Children up to 3rd/4th grade will enjoy. I hightly recommend it as a read-aloud story!

Captures the true spirit of Francis
An imaginative retelling of the last years of Francis and the final stage in his spiritual growth. A timely parable about the loss of innocence we all experience as we see our youthful dreams and ideals compromised and twisted by the institutional dynamics of power, money, and bureacracy. Will Francis become bitter, cynical and disillusioned -- or will he break through to an even more profound understanding of what it means to be a witness to the nonviolent Christ?

Moving, theologically rich account of Francis' last years.

LeClerc describes St. Francis' struggle with challenges to the original simplicity and poverty of his Order, in a series of deeply moving dialogues and lyric descriptions. This is a beautiful and challenging book, full of the spirit of Francis -- deeply joyful, deeply sorrowful, deeply loving and trusting God.

I have read this book a number of times during the past year, and am still finding new insights and matters for meditation each time I pick it up. It's truly excellent -- a masterwork.

True friendship revealed through 25 years of letters.
I loved this book, not only for it's inside view into pre-French Revoltionary France and Naples but also for its rich portrait of friendship between a man, a woman and literally two kingdoms, France and Italy. Ample biographical information is inserted between the letters helping us understand the characters and their lives. In particular we follow Madame D'Epinay and her role as a female in the Enlightenment. She had a brilliant mind and a sensitive spirit, only held back by her frail body and the era in which she wrote. The letters end with D'Epinay's death. Galiani states that we do not out survive our true friendships, something of us dies also. During this twenty-five year correspondance we meet other important figures such as Catherine The Great and the young Mozart and Voltaire. If you appreciate the power of letters and their ability to reveal a life and you are interested in the Enlightenment, this book is not to be missed.

Fascinating lives! Incredible times! Historical yet personal
This books transports you back to the 50-year span preceding the French Revolution. It reproduces and describes the letters passed between Mme. D'Epinay, a French aristocrat and the Abbe Galiani, a Neapolitan priest diplomat during a twelve year period. But before launching into these letters we are provided with a rich background of the times and lives of these two protagonists. Through it one has the opportunity to experience life as it was lived by the European upper classes of that time. It is startling to be directly exposed to the mindset of such peoples. How natural it was to promote cultural gatherings at one's estate for the sake of diversion and fun. The unmasked and unaffected vanity common and widely accepted within that society. The book provides the reader with the ability to relive relevant and marking events and thoughts that made enormous impact in world history side-by-side with mundane and trivial daily occurrences to one's life. Here and there one is presented with "unpublished" thoughts from Voltaire, Diderot, Grimm, the Neapolitan Prime Minister Tanucci, Rousseau and many other personalities. The absolute brilliance of Mozart, Galiani himself, the greatness of Catherine, Empress of Russia is constantly shared with the reader via anecdotes and dialogues established among these figures. The book is so powerful, so skillfully presented and sequenced to the point of making the reader forget that someone did extensive research, collected thoughts, inserted views and actually wrote it. Francis Steegmuller offers us a delightful reading.
