My thoughts
The Angel by Karl C Klein is in essence a retelling of the rite of passage story told from the female perspective. It begins with a young naive girl named Amy who doesn't seem to be exceptional in any way. Then after a series of unfortunate, or possibly fortunate events depending on how one looks at it, Amy finds herself among a group of very rural mountain people where she goes through an extreme culture shock. Among the mountain people she learns to love and live in a whole new way where she finds her inner strength, and a true beauty in life.

I have read many of the classics, and must say that Klein's telling of this age old tale truly touched me, and helped me to see love and life in a whole new, fresh perspective. I recomend this book stongly to anyone looking for a good tale that they can get more than a few hours of entertainment out of.

Women's Power or "Chick Book"
Admittedly, I am a Fan of Karl C Klein, who I see as a master storyteller. The Angel Who Had Two Mommies, his fifth book does not disappoint, though the story is mundane next to his first books, told through the eyes of his sixteen year old main character, Amy Renfeld. I do not mean mundane in a bad way. This story is about life and this story is about all women. Unlike Karl's Time's Blood and Makaila, this story stays close to the ground.

I could say that this story is a coming of age story, Amy finding the adult within herself through a series of challenges but that would fall short; Amy is an archetype. Somewhere in the masterfully crafted lines, Amy becomes "all women" as women relate to society.

Karl gives us a slice of thousands of years of human history and where that history has placed us in this world and where we have placed this world within ourselves. Amy, as any female-child, steps into a world pre-created and pre-existing. She challenges this world as the world challenges her. Neither are left the same. The story transcends Amy and becomes a story about us all.

Karl's style and devices are engaging, pull the reader in and beg for the page to be turned. Karl speaks in a voice that I find more conversational than I do "literary." As with works by Mark Twain, this work is wonderful read out loud, which makes Karl a storyteller and not just a writer.

Read this story to your children. The Angel Who Had Two Mommies stands next to any story the Grimm Brothers have given us.

Lisa, on the list for Karl's next book!

Once in a great while...
I am a reader, something I carry from my childhood, raised in a household of educators. I read a lot. Once in a great while a book comes along that gets under my skin, grabs my soul, talks right to me. A book like this shouts in my face and even before I finish the last page, I know I will never forget the story and the people. Somehow, the characters leap off the pages and I know, I will not be the same for the experience.

The Angel who had two mommies by Karl C Klein is such a book. My husband asked me more than once, "What are you crying about now?" He's reading the book now - sometimes I catch him choking up and he tells me, "I heard a joke at work today. Want to hear it?" I know better: Amy, the main character, is touching his soul and it's okay he doesn't say that. Many people, including Amy, can't find the words to express what they are experiencing.

My husband has taken to calling our twelve-year-old daughter, "My little teddy bear," right out of this book. Lori is waiting for her father to finish with book. I think we'll read it together.

The Angel who had two mommies is a powerful story told simply. I can't say enough good things about this book.

whimsy and wisdom
This is a lovely book of twenty-one maps presented using the conventions of an atlas, but each map depicts a fictitious area and covers a theme: Secrets, Knowledge, Bad Habits, Home, Boredom, Health, Frozen Wastes, Stream of Ideas, The Isles of Forgetfulness, Mountains of Work, Growth, Chaos, The Void, Adversity, Haute Cuisine, Pleasure, Change, Mortality and Elsewhere.

Each map is preceded by one-and-a-half to two pages of commentary, including quotes, musings and anecdotes. These pages are worthwhile and add to the book's concept. After reading the pages, one can peruse a map and really contemplate its details with a pleasant and unique mix of pleasure and insight.

A loose composite map of all twenty-one areas is included.

An excellent gift book
This book makes a wonderful gift for those who love maps or for those who are creative and love something imaginative and different. It's beautifully done and the content - the place names, the quotes, the ideas are all something good and interesting.

Witty, clever, thoughtful- maps that stretch the imagination
Filled with provocative quotes, intriguing demographic data, and regions like Mountains of Work, Chaos, and Elsewhere - The Atlas of Experience brings us into a fictional world that is very funny, while also being rich in depth and detail.

The book really does look and feel like an atlas - the maps are beautifully drawn, and the various landmarks have names that are appropriate and reveal considerable thought. For instance, in the region of Adversity, it is possible to stop in at Adrenaline while climbing the Peaks of Euphoria. Of course, you may wind up at the end of a road and find yourself in Exhaustion or Consequences. When you visit Knowledge, you'll find that the Forest of Curiosity is very close to Fantasy and Intuition.

I purchased the book as a gift for a friend who is a geography buff with a creative streak, but now I'm thinking about keeping it for myself. I've enjoyed thumbing through it and discovering mysterious locales like Secrets, Growth, Pleasure and Change. This book would be wonderful for someone who loves maps, travel, geography, or someone who has a rich imagination and who can appreciate Experience and Life being depicted in cartographic form.

She knows her fat!
Ann Louise Gittleman is right on the money. I found this book the most important book about dietary fat I have ever read.

I, too, used to subscribe to the "fat-free" lifestyle in sad, desperate attempts to lose weight. After finding out just how much the body needs fat, especially the right kinds of fat, I realized that I was really "abusing" my body by ignoring it's needs for essential fatty acids. I have added flaxseed oil to my daily regimen and have started to incorporate dietary changes. I do feel much better.

I also appreciate the scientific evidence that supports her claims. She sheds new light on the body's need for protein and fat, something that flies in the face of traditional nutrition advice. Since I've started to give myself more protein, I feel fuller longer and my sugar cravings are much reduced.

If you have been living the "Fat-Free Lie," you owe it to yourself to read this book. I was so engrossed in the thing that I finished it in a day. It is truly breakthrough.

Great Book
I really like this book. This is more of a nutritional book than a diet book, although weight-loss is the added benefit. I found her advice sound and logical. I highly recommend this book to people who are interested in their health, especially women. I look forward to reading more of her books!

Sound Advice
I have read numerous nutrition books and most of Ms. Gittleman's books as well. I think she is one of the most thorough and knowledgable nutritionists around. Her insight into our dietary needs is accurate. This book and her "Get the Sugar Out" book have changed the way I eat and feed my family. We like our results! I believe the american people are being mislead with misinformation and half truths. We have limited choices and inferior products available in most of our restaurants and grocery stores. I hope people educate themselves and find their own good health. I highly recommend " Eat Fat, Lose Weight" as well as any other book by Ms. Gittleman.

By far and away
By far and away the VERY BEST COOKBOOK EVER. The recipes are simple, basic and absolutely delicious. I received this book as a shower gift 7 years ago and it's my go-to cookbook whenever I need a failsafe recipe. I have so much confidence in this book, I don't think twice about trying a new recipe for guests, since I know it's going to be delicious and turn out perfect. This book has never failed me. You can find the ingredients at any grocery store (nothing too fancy). People rave about the food this book turns out! Tasty tasty.

A fantastic collection of good, old-fashioned recipes
My copy of "Favorite Recipes from Quilters: More Than 900 Delectable Dishes" just arrived in the mail, and I was *very* pleasantly surprised! Usually, the majority of the cookbooks that I buy are what I refer to as "cannibalized," meaning that what few good recipes are in them are cut out and put into my folders of loose recipe clippings (giving their lives for the greater good of my collection of good, *useful* "gotta keep this one" recipes, so to speak, but cutting down on the clutter in my house ).

This book though, as full as it is of *exactly* the kind of recipes that I'm constantly foraging for, has great (and obviously easily made to a successful completion) ideas on just about *every* page! The authors were able to fit multiple recipes on *each* page's format, due to the simplicity of both the ingredients and the instructions required for each one, but *don't* think that simplicity means "boring," because some of the best tasting recipes are made with the most simple ingredients!

With this book, and a couple of others that I just now ordered, "Mennonite Community Cookbook: Favorite Family Recipes" and "Mennonite Country-Style Recipes & Kitchen Secrets" (and those cookbooks that I already own, that I've already listed on my Listmania lists like Fanny Farmer) I think that I'll have just about EVERY recipe that I've ever yearned for! Who would ever have thought it possible??

Naw, I'm sure that I'll continue to add to my collection (cookbook junkie that I am), but this book will definitely hold it's own special place, and be *used* often.

My favorite book
Honest to God, the best cookbook I have seen. I enjoy just sitting down and reading it, that's how good the recipes are. I have made several items from this book and really enjoyed them. The recipes are for simple, homey, comfort food and are easy to make without relying on expensive, uncommon ingredients. There are truly so many recipes in each category it is easy to find one that will suit my mood.

I liked this book so much, I gave it to 2 of my friends as wedding shower gifts and I recomended it to another friend; she bought it and loves it.

If you like gourmet, fancy or low-fat food, do not buy this book. If you like good food that is not hard to make and will get a lot of compliments, buy this book.

Total paradox!
This book is very interesting, it tells the voyage of Varka, while he searches for his dead love, 'following' the tarot's major arcana cards. It's very simple and at the same time very complicated, in a manner that shows Louise Cooper's talent and originality. The word paradox will follow you throughout the book.

lost book
I, like other reviewers, read this book in the early seventies.
It is one of the most profound books I have read because 30 years later I am still trying to find a copy.

Buy it; read it; do not ever lose it.

A MUST_READ for literary escapists
I read this book in 1974. Lost the copy and have been searching for another copy for 24 years. Last week I found one for an exorbanant cost and bought it. It is worth every penny.

Very inspiring -- a wonderful study
A friend who is a river guide gave me this book. I never really understood the fasination with rafting until I read this. The writing leaves a little to be desired, but the subject matter and the information is very moving.

Stories that need telling
A friend told me about this book several years ago when I was raft guiding on the Colorado River a little north of the Grand Canyon. I bought the book, and absolutely loved it. As one of the rare breed of female white water rafting guides, it was amazing to read about other women who shared my passion for the river and for the wild places around us. Breaking into the Current is NOT a male-bashing book; it filled with stories that are waiting to be told--stories by and about interesting women who went into a career that few women would consider entering. I loved reading the stories about Lava Falls, the making of Crystal Rapid, and all the others. Each time I return to the book it makes me ache to be on the river yet again.

This book sings.
A few years back on my first trip through the Grand Canyon I was lucky enough to be in a group that included Louise Teal as one of the guides. I bought this book after the trip and read it on the drive home. I was blown away. Her love of the canyon, the river, the people...it all glows from every page. Rafting the Grand is a life-changing experience; and the elements that make it so are all here--captured and expressed by a woman who has become part of the river and vice versa. She tells the stories of the women who 'broke into the current' with humor, sensitivity, respect and love. On top of all that, she is a very talented writer and this book works purely on that basis. If you've ever run the canyon, buy this book. If you have ever wanted to run it, buy this book. If you've got no interest in the canyon or the Colordo river but enjoy good writing about real stuff, buy this book.

better when it's shared
When I first read this book (silently to myself), I thought it was okay. The very first time I shared it with a class (4th grade), the book came to life. What a powerful story of learning and living. A student reported to me today that she repeated "KEMP-CHIN-SKI" on the soccer field and her team scored soon after. Oh, the great, far-reaching power of a wonderful, affecting book.

Illustrations of the most excellent caliber
I revelled in the charming illustrations. Gustavson has managed to create a clever, believable, and thoroughly entertaining world that could only be accomplished with a deft hand and and a sharp, thoughtful mind.

A truly inspirational story to be loved by children & adults
Mrs. K encapsules what we envision our favorite teacher to have been like. She motivates learning by incorporating amusing tactics, such as dancing, to teach subjects on a different level. Her courage through her illness leaves her students always remembering the stronger side of Mrs. K and everything she taught them in Room 3, even making them teachers to one another. Children & adults alike will love Good Luck, Mrs. K!!

A Fun Read
I am a big fan of the Georgia Nicolson books. Each one so far has been hilarious and fun to read. The third book doesn't fail to meet my expectations. However I wish the book was a little longer. It seems to go by too fast. All of the characters are funny and easy to relate to. I love how Louise Rennison can give any of Georgia's aquaintances a humorous trait. The relationships in this book are great as well. Georgia cares about Libby very much even though she is probably the most annoying sister in the universe. The Ace Gang shares a special bond also. They all have their lives but can remain the greatest friends and share the best times. Georgia's family also sparks my interest. There is always some new problem going on, but they continue to stick together. I'm happy that Georgia gets the choice between Robbie and Dave, but the end is so abrupt! I guess this means all of the readers will be quick to buy the next book. This would be a five star book if only it was a bit longer. However, it is still great as is.

Boisterously Entertaining.
This book (along with the other books in this series) is amazing. Louise Rennison never ceases to amaze me with her wit. Once you pick this book up you will have an extremely hard time putting it down.

Hilarious!!!
This novel is so great the main character georgia is such a fantastic character she represents most all young teenage girls she is funny and fresh. this novel is sure to have you on the floor laughing, a great pick me up novel!
