Essential reading for expats in Japan
I wish I'd read this book before my experiences with Japanese hospitals in the late eighties (the book was published in 1995). The front page contains emergency information and the Japanese vocabulary necessary for calling an ambulance. The rest of the book covers all aspects of health care, what to expect in Japanese hospitals and within the health care system, drugs and nutrition in Japan, exercise resources, and health-related lifestyle tips. There's even a chapter on dealing with death and dying in Japan. Extremely useful, with extensive listings of resources. This should be on the bookshelf of every expat living in Japan.

Essential for those who live in Japan
This book got me through pregnancy and labor with it's thoroughly researched and comprehensive advice on the Japanese medical system. Now I am relying on it to get my son through vaccinations and diseases. Hundreds of medical centers throughout Japan are listed, in both English and Japanese. If you are uneasy about seeing a doctor in Japan, this book takes your hand and guides you (even includes topical English-Japanese phrases).

Just in Time for Christmas
As a member of Louise Borden's family, I'd deffinatly say that this book is worth buying. This book gave me the joyful feeling of being home for Christmas because my family has so many of the same traditions because the author is my aunt. The story is based on her life and ways of selebrating Christmas. A few months ago my family had to move to a diffrent location. When we were driveing to our new home I held this book in my arms thinking of the fact that when all of this moving was done then finaly my family would be home for Christmas. This book is deffinately worth buying!

A great Christmas memory trigger!
My first experience with this book was through a book read aloud given at a writing workshop I recently attended. The teacher reading the book had invited Mrs. Borden to her classroom to read and discuss her writing. The story inspired me to remember some of the special Christmas traditions shared in our family. I'm going to read this book aloud to my class of seventh graders this coming week and ask them to recall some of those special Christmas memories of their own.

Teachers and Homeschool Parents, Take Note!!!
This book would make a GREAT base for a thematic or unit study on music. This book appears to be geared to middle schoolers, but younger and older students will also enjoy it.

The thing I like best about this book is that it gets across the fact that music is for everyone, not just the rich and talented. EVERYONE will find something they can do in this book.

I wish every child from a low income family had access to this book.

This book covers an extremely wide spectrum of music. It changed how I viewed the word "music".

This book is on my top ten list of books for children. I can't recommend it enough.

Make and Strike Up the band!
As a teacher, I really enjoy using this book. The instrument making ideas are really do-able! You have many of the needed items around your house right now. The format is laid out in such a way that it's a pleasure to read and use. When you need a quick idea, something will usually jump out by just flipping through the pages. Suitable for children to use on their own, too. Good choice!

The Knowing Body: The Artist As Storyteller in Contemporary Performance

Great Book on Performance!
Steinman's book really stands alone among performance art books. While there are many that document what particular artists are doing, this one offers a way in for a person who wants to perform (or know more about how performance artists work). The book is difficult to characterize: while not exactly a "how-to" manual, it inspired me to create new art and to think about how we tell stories with our bodies, with images, in front of an audience. Must reading for anyone interested in performance art, it will also be fascinating to those in theatre, playwriting, visual arts and performance of any sort. I lend mine out all the time (but it's one of a few among my many books that I make sure I always get back!)

Essential reading for shamans, performers, and humans.
For some reason, this book is still the only one of its kind, delving into the performance art philosophies of Meredith Monk, Barbara Dilley, Ping Chong, and Spalding Gray, just to name a few. Beautifully illustrated, this book explores dance and performance art from a kind of Jungian/shamanist/Buddhist perspective. You can learn from this book just what it means to be an artist--or just what it means to be alive

A tale of innocence and beauty!
The Little Jesus of Sicily can be read at many different levels. On the surface it is a captivating tale. At a deeper level, it is a voyage in time, an account of life in a rural Sicilian community, a reality that has almost vanished. Pasqualino ponders the loss of customs and traditions of his native village while reflecting on the impact of industrialization and modernization on society. It is possible to discern a still deeper level--a spiritual one where Pasqualino shares his Christian beliefs without ever resorting to pious platitudes. Imagination, poetry, and faith are at the core of Pasqualino's spiritual quest as he asks simple but fundamental questions about the meaning of existence. A profound meditation on the human condition, this novel depicts in great detail the hardships and the ordinary pleasures of day-to-day life while examining the beliefs and forces that sustain people through suffering and adversity. The novel renews a tradition of literature found in works of regional and southern Italian inspiration and belongs to that category of rare books which are suited to please children and adults alike: Grimm's legends and fairy tales, La Fontaine's fables, Saint-Exupery's Little Prince, or Cervantes' Don Quixote. I decided to translate The Little Jesus of Sicily for one simple reason: I feel in love with it. I started the novel and could not put it down. I saw myself in it, I saw my child, and I saw the child who resides in all of us and longs for wonder. It was beautiful, it was funny, and it made me happy; I wanted to share this precious feeling of joy with other readers. I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed translating it.

A charming, heartfelt tale!
The Little Jesus of Sicily is a wonderful story that transcends both age and religion. The author recounts his experience as a young child chosen to be Jesus for a day for the Feast of Saint Joseph in a small village in pre-World War II Italy. As the story winds through the fanciful imaginations and commonplace activities of a youngster, the reader is reminded of his/her own experiences as a child and is introduced to an historical glimpse of a bygone era. The translation from the Italian is superb -- it was awarded the PEN American Center's 1996 Renato Poggioli Translation Award -- and the thoughtful illustrations, which burst off the page, are an asset to the work.

A profound look at history & community
In 1847 an impoverished displaced group of Choctaw Indians collected from their meager resources the sum of $170 to send toward food relief for the Irish Potato Famine.

Through the memories of Choona, now known as Tom, who is very, very old, we learn of how he, as a young man, at last learned of that part of his family's history about which no one would speak & yet everyone looked so wounded. The Long March, when his people were forced to walk from Florida to Mississippi all through one fearsome, killing winter.

The Long March is rich in American history & memory. The marvelous drawings create a magically real place. This is a must for anyone who loves looking at other ways to live in community; other ways of teaching the spirit to grow & learning about courage, wisdom & respecting the memories.

An amazing book - to be read & read again & again & the pictures to be studied & dreamed over. Beautifully evocative.

This is a moving and beautiful book with awesome drawings.
(I got this book in Dublin, Ireland, recently.)

This is a truly delightful book. The drawings are lovingly created and the story is both touching and well written. What makes it even more compelling is that it is based on a wonderful true act of human generosity over 150 years ago, from one impoverished people to another, who, although worlds apart in both distance and cultures, had a common enemy, in hunger and oppression.

The author travelled to Oklahoma to research the book and has gone to great lengths to ensure the drawings are authentic as well as inspiring. I particularly like the drawings of the great-grandmother and indeed, the clever shadow of the American eagle when Choona raises his arms in the final drawing as well as the subtle, celtic symbols to be found in this same drawing. "The Long March" is a must for the millions of us with Irish-American heritage - every Irish American child should read this book!

Looking for Susie
I love this book. I didn't think we could buy it anymore. Out of all the books I read as a child, this one I remember most. It was great and easy to learn to read. I remember reading it over and over again. Now I want to buy it for my daughter.

A Classic
Children's books come and go but Looking for Susie is a classic. I've read it to my eight grandchildren and this delightful story of a little girl lost is one they requested over and over. I've also read it to my kindergarten classes year after year and it never goes out of style. Children love it. It is the one book I plan to give to my great grandchildren when the time comes. I highly recommend it to teachers of young children and to all parents and grandparents.

One of my all-time favorite series for teens!
I absolutely adored the Swept Away series! In Love on the Range by Louise E. Powers, Tina has the chance to live in the time period she finds the most fasinating - the old American west! With the help of her friend Ashley's computer, Tina is "swept away" for an adventure in another time - a 20th century girl in 19th century America. Her adventure helps her deal with her "furture" problems, and Tina learns some important life lessons. I highly recommend this book (and the whole series for that matter!).
