Love and Honor in the Himalayas: Coming to Know Another Culture (Contemporary Ethnography)
Published in Paperback by University of Pennsylvania Press (May, 2001)
Author: Ernestine McHugh
Amazon base price: $19.95

A Gem of a Book
It's a shame this book was published by a university press that gave it such a dull academic-sounding title. The story you'll find within its pages is a wonderful eye-opening memoir that takes you deep into daily life in a tiny village in Nepal back in the 1970s--when the traditional way of life had not yet succumbed to the forces of globalization.

The author does what the best authors of memoirs do--she allows herself to become almost a transparent vehicle for you, the reader. You experience at a strange and exotic world peering through her eyes and reading her vivid descriptions. She keeps her analysis to a minimum but shows you enough that you can draw your own conclusions.

When I was done reading this book, the people she had described seemed so real to me it was hard to believe I hadn't met them myself.

Honest, authentic, and completely without the pretentious literary tone that ruins so many current memoirs. A great book!

I loved this book
If you have been to Nepal, were a Peace Corps Volunteer, or lived in another culture, you will love this book. The people in this Nepali village came alive for me, and the writer was honest about the pleasure and the pain of living in another culture.

Coming to Know Another Culture
'Love and Honor in the Himalayas' will appeal to anyone who has ever desired to travel to distant lands and lose (or find) him- or herself in the invigorating freshness of new experiences, cultures, and friendships. Living as the daughter of a Gurung family in a remote Himalayan village in Nepal, McHugh experiences the incredible richness and immediacy of everyday high mountain life. Hers is a perspective unimagined by the casual tourist, and through her wonderfully rendered observations, we are challenged to look beyond our own comfortable Western lives at a culture that deserves our respect and admiration.

Magic in menopause? . . . . . . Yes!
The story of the Wise Women is beautifully told, truly moving and will touch the deepest part of you. Must reading for women of every age. Together we will change the world as we release our fear, surrender to the process and discover our power. We are the teachers of the 21st Century . . . . we are the Wise Women.

A completely refreshing, positive approach to menopause
Louise Rouse, in her work, Magic of Menopause, gives readers/listeners a lasting gift of hope, encouragement, inner strength and love. She leads you to finding the answers within and to trusting the processes of change and transition in life. The book offers a unique approach to dealing with the phases of a woman's journey, finding power and purpose in each passage. I highly recommend this multi-faceted project (book, tape, silk pouch, and four stones), to woman of all ages and to the men who love them.

"Makes growing older a much more endearing experience."
As a woman wandering past the age of 35, I found the Magic of Menopause to be a comfort and a self-confidence boost. After listening to the tape I was inspired, and carrying the stones with me helped keep the information fresh in my mind. The booklet has also been such a good guide, small enough to carry in my purse so I can consult it any time I need a little advice or want to share information with my friends.

Ms. Rouse's story leaves you feeling privledged, honored, and on your way to an exciting adventure. Instead of being afraid of becoming a worthless senior citizen, you can feel privledged and eager to become a mentor and teacher.

I highly recommend the Magic of Menopause for women in all stages of life. It will warm your heart, make you smile and remind you of the reasons it is okay to love yourself at any age.

A must for Teddy Bear lovers !!!
This is a beautiful book with pages of photographs of teddy bears in wonderfully posed scenes. It is also very informative with lots of tips and tricks for making and displaying your bears. Plus, there are lots of full size patterns inside, to make a variety of heartwarming bears. It's just a wonderful book.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!
This book is well written. Instructions are very clear and easy to understand. The pictures are beautiful. Patterns are extremely well done. The bears I have created from this book were fantastic and truly adorable!

A must-have book for bear makers and bear lovers alike!
This isn't just a book about making bears. Of course, it IS a book about making bears, with wonderful illustrations, full-size patterns and easy-to-understand directions, but it is also so much more. Each "antique" bear (and rabbit) has his or her own charming character, complete with hobbies and favorite attire. Along with the descriptions of each bear are beautiful photographs of the bears in their "natural" settings and at their favorite pasttimes. I think I like Webster the best, with his high-top boots and his "just in case" skeleton key hanging about his neck. Even if you never make a bear, you still need this book for its quaint English garden and old-fashioned cottage style photographs.

Changed my outlook on life
This is a wonderful little book. All quotations are printed in meditation format, and some are no longer than a few brief paragraphs. Others are as long as a page. They all rejuvenate my mind, like sitting next to a crystal stream in the forest. The font, spacing, and layout of the book are exquisite.

This book has meant so much to me for almost a decade. I still remember the time I found this book, and my initial reaction to the quotes within; imagine, a time when there were no high-rises on the American landscape, indeed, a time before it was called "America." A world before pollution and overpopulation were concerns. This afforded a connection with the world and a spiritual experience that none of us will ever truly know. This world is now gone, and if not for books like this its memory would not be preserved. This book helped make me more aware of Indian/Native American thought.

When the commotion of the world around you is overwhelming you, this book makes for a great escape. Especially insightful is the quote that reads, "We do not want churches because they will teach us to argue about God."

This book is a gem.

Rock on!
This book is fantastic! If you are considering purchasing it then do not hesitate. It is full of things that made me think. It is very educational and practical. I love it! It is helpful because it has such intellegent information in it. There are different passages in it from different Native Americans. There are several chapters, and background information about the Native Americans that were quoted in the book. I think it is an awesome book, and it had a great impact on me after reading it.

Early Native Americans had such pure thoughts about life...
This compilation of Native American sayings is appropriately called wisdom. Full of the logic and simple things that they lived and strived for. And how they were trying to understand the newcomers to their land...they could not believe that there were others in the world that were so violent, immoral, dishonest and treacherous...after reading what they have to say, it is not hard to see where their bitterness comes from. Some very well chosen statements from wise Native Americans.

Neotropical Rainforest Mammals: A Field Guide
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (August, 1997)
Authors: Louise H. Emmons and Francois Feer
Amazon base price: $26.00

You can't go without it.
This book, referred to by many other authors, is THE guide for this group of Mammals. I found it indispensible for use in the rainforest, even if most mammals are very hard to see. The perfect illustrations, combined with the thorough descriptions and clear distribution maps, make it easy to determine what kind of animal you've seen. Very helpful to understand the local guides are the translations of the names in many tongues.

It's a very practical and well illustrated fieldguide
It's the most usefull book I own related with the mammalfauna proyects ( inventories, education, management ) we are doing in Central and Western Colombia. Every aspect of the text and illustrations has proven to be very usefull and practical. The taxonomical descriptions are generaly good enough to clasify the bigger species in the field, and the habit and habitat descriptions coincide mostly with our own experiences. The distributionmaps included in the text are also very usefull. The illustrations are sometime a little small, but have proven to be easily recognized by the local habitants, what is extremely usefull during quick inventaries. The relation price-quality is outstanding

wonderful

Most Used Reference Book in my Office
I just came here looking for an update to my 1998 edition, and I can't see a pub. date for what's for sale. Over the last five years, I've seen many two-words turn into one word, and would love an update. This book is fast and easy to use. I have six copies--one for everyone in the office. What about jughandle or jug handle(the traffic engineering term)? It's not listed!

This book is worth its weight in gold!
As a court reporter and a proofreader for a newspaper, I use this book religiously. This book is a must for anyone writing college papers or writing professionally.

This book is an invaluable resource. I have two copies!
I am a freelance (no hyphen, per the book!) proofreader and copyeditor, and I have an extensive reference library. I keep TWO copies of this book around so I don't have to go far to grab it. It's amazing how many times I look something up in this book, and the answer is almost always there. I recommend this book to most of my clients, as well, as it helps minimize how many corrections I need to make on their materials. It's compact and helpful. Keep one nearby. (I also do customized travel and restaurant research, and when I'm writing reports for my clients about the best places for them to travel and where to stay and eat, I keep encountering words that I want to double check.)It is definitely NOT just for someone responsible for proofreading. While the trend is away from hyphenation and toward "solid" words, this book helps clarify what the current approved format is.

GREAT FOLK TALE
This book is super for your Kdgn. or First grade child just learning about folk tales. My son was facinated by the pictures and the story.

My favorite book
This was my favorite book as a child. While moving out of my parent's house a while back, I stumbled across it and re-read it. Whenever I have children of my own, this will be the first thing I read to them.

Our Favorite McDermott Tale
McDermott's Papagayo is our favorite of his spectacular books for the 4-8 year olds (we have them all). His illustrations are brilliant, even suitable for framing. Caution may be in order, however, for younger children or those "afraid of the dark" or "monsters". This mythological tale is a bit spooky--we love it!

Pilgrimage: A Tale of Old Natchez

Pilgrimage; a Tale of Old Natchez
As a close friend of the author's grandson, I have become familiar with the town of Natchez and have a new respect and connection with my history as a Southerner. An incredible book to say the least. Pilgrimage is among one of my favorite books, and I must say that my grade at school has been caught up in the "splendor of the Old South in Natchez as a result of reading it! I believe all ages should read this extraordinary book as it stimulates the imagination of the reader.

A Splendid Embodiment of the Old South
As a frequent vsitor to Natchez I am well aware of its grandeur and mysterious intrigue. As the sister of Charleston, Memphis, and New Orleans, Natchez has become the symbol of steadfast glory in the Old South. Mrs. Collier has captured the story of the Walworth's in extensive detail. Based on the events which actually did occur in Natchez from the early 1830's to the 1920's. Thius fabulous novel expresses trully the joy, beauty, great tragedy, and majesty of the Walworths in the little rivertown of Natchez.

Add this historical fiction to a tour of Natchez's treasures
I loved this book about the old south and the before- and -after of the civil war. Louise Collier's personal family saga captured me and transported me back to fragrant gardens, dusty roads, magnificent mansions and a family I fell in love with. Add this to a tour of the historical homes of Natchez for a wonderful treat.

A Question of Choice

Authors: Sarah Weddington and Mary-Louise Parker

Average review score:

Dynamic recap of the past century
I had the honor of taking a leadership class with Sarah Weddington where this book was used as a main text. The story of this accomplished woman bears testament to the changes fought for and won by women in the second wave of feminsim, both in the state of Texas and in the Nation.

Prior to reading this book, I knew that Roe vs. Wade originated in Texas, but I never actually understood how much things changed for women of my generation. Both women and men alike will marvel at the antiquated norms Weddington faced as a young woman and how she ultimately overcame them. For all of the frustrations I presently voice about the status of women in the world, I am not at all certain I would have her personal courage when faced with such overwhelming sexism.

As a Texas state legislator, she was responsible for an equal credit act, a rape reform bill (co-sponsored with another new female representative named Kathryn Bailey) and the state's Equal Rights Amendment. To realize that one woman had accomplished all of this is simply amazing and inspiring.

Although there is not as much White House era musings as I would have prefered, the fact that she got in when few presidents of either party appointed large numbers of women is really signifigant. Not satified with her own personal triumph, she then worked to ensure that future generations would not have the same hardship. Working alongside Midge Constanoza, Weddington used her position to encourage more women to get involved in policymaking.

Also heartening is Weddington's inclusion of steps to protect reproductive choice at the book's end.Unlike some other books on reproductive rights, the message comes in loud and clear: Defend choice every day and without compromise. The battles may be long and weary, but the nation cannot afford to abandon the 30 year old (at least in spirit) promise of women's bodily autonomy.

Even though the original version of the book was released during the 1992 elections, it is a message that bears repeating in every presidential campaign. Vote pro-choice and vote often to protect women's right to life.

Important lessons on leadership for both women and men
This outstanding book offers an excellent perspective into the life of one of America's most important female attorneys. Regardless of one's political views on abortion, "pro-life" and "pro-choice" advocates alike can agree that Sara Weddington's critical role in this monumental turning point in U.S. abortion rights history serves as an important lesson on the development and evolution of leadership roles for, and the civil rights of, women. This book is for men just as much as it is for women. Men will gain an invaluable insight into their counterparts by adding significantly to their understanding of women. This book is a "must read" for any person of any political persuasion who wishes to add to their comprehension of the question of abortion, the rights of women, and the evolution of the leadership roles assumed by women.

Not just about Roe vs. Wade
Weddington's piece is not just about the culmination of Roe vs. Wade and beyond, but a heartfelt autobiography that helps readers understand and appreciate the challenges of women in the that time period. Readers can gain leadership secrets from the experiences of Weddington from Roe to her work in the White House.

As a young woman, it helped me understand how far women have come in the past century and be more thankful of women leaders, like Sarah Weddington.

READ ME <3
I love this author, i have not read this book but the other books that i have read of hers are so good that i have read them all at least 2. She is funny and sensitive in all that she writes and i am sure that this book will be as great as the other books she has written.

Excellent book!
Annie is a girl who must deal with a lot of changes in her life-- a new country, a new school, new friends, a new language. She is also dealing with those turbulent teenage emotions and how to reveal or conceal them. Annie is so real as a character, and Louise Plummer writes with such a great sense of humor that this book is a delight to read. As a Utahn, it was also fun to read a book with a setting that is familiar. This book made me laugh and cry, and teaches that of all the people in the world, the one you should be is yourself.

Hi
I have never read this book but she is a great author so read up
