Straightforward, helpful and highly recommended
I certainly didn't think that such a little book would have such a big impact on my thoughts about myself and others, but it did! While much of what Dr. Hart says feels often "common-sensical", and the analogy of the emergence of the butterfly seems simple and cliche, everything she has to say is also very valid. The way in which it was presented was accessible without seeming condescending or too simple. (More "a-ha" moments than "Well, duh" ones.) I took several weeks to read through this book, do (most of) the simple exercises, and really think about what I was reading and how I felt about myself - past and present. I've read a lot of things on self-esteem, and this was the first book which really helped me CHANGE my self-esteem. I think almost anyone would benefit from it, and highly recommend it.

The best self esteem book on the market
I am a therapist and have led groups using this book and had clients read this book to accompany our individual therapy. I think I have had at least 35 clients use it. Every single client has loved it! They have found it to be practical and useful to help them overcome poor self-esteem and feel better about themselves when they didn't get this foundation in childhood. It is easy to read, encourages insight, offers specific ways to change. A very useful book. Thanks, Dr. Hart!

Our hotel in Bali : how two young Americans made a dream come true : a story of the 1930s
Published in Unknown Binding by January Books ()
Author: Louise G. Koke

Delightful Tale of Learning a New Culture the Hard Way
This heartwarming but level-headed book entertains and informs the reader on varied levels.

First, there is the simple tale of falling in love with a PLACE and following the dream of building a home there. That'll appeal to those of us crazy enough to create our dream house. Whether a person builds with straw, wood, or bricks, he or she earns membership in the dubiously grand brotherhood of homebuilders. Fellow members: you will recognise your project in this book; you'll laugh, groan and perhaps sob, along with the author, whose slightly dry, self-deprecating humor buoyed her in times of good and bad.

Secondly, the book focuses on the author's cultural clashes with the Balinese. She is never condescending, never patronizing, & refreshingly never glorifying towards the Balinese. Little by little, through trial and error, Louise and her husband learn about how to communicate with, how to get along with, and how to employ these unique people. Expatriate westerners living in Bali will see themselves in the foibles and complications arising in the author's interactions with the Balinese.

Thirdly, it's a great little taste of Balinese culture, circa 1935. If you're going to Bali, or have been to Bali, or you just like the IDEA of Bali, you'll find much to appreciate in the intimate, non-travelogue descriptions by this author/artist.
A delight.

Amazing artwork!
I am not a huge fan of old "nursery rhyme" type poetry, but this book caught my eye and my 3 yr old boys and I love it! The illustrations are simply amazing as each page unfolds from 2 children visiting an eccentric, storytelling neighbor to the children becoming the owl and pussycat. My boys immediately noticed the firepole in the man's house among other curiosities. As the children enjoy a snack and the man reads the poem, the floor turns to water and the window seat to a pea green boat. The bespeckled little boy becomes an owl and girl becomes a cat. The poem is read a second time with them as the main characters and the illustrations cleary 'telling' the story. Just as fluidly, the children return to human form and their mothers call them for dinner as the poem winds down. This book would certainly be a wonderful addition to a classic nursery rhymes collection.

Another Great Entry in the Knight Revival
If you're a fan of Hilary Knight's artwork (and if you're not, you ought to be), you will definitely want this book. Those who are only familiar with Knight's wonderful pen and ink drawings for Eloise and Mrs. Piggle Wiggle will be amazed at the beauty of his full color illustrations. This book is good enough for either your child's/nephew's/niece's bookshelf, or (in my case) your own. The illustrations of a young boy and girl slowly becoming part of the tale are beautifully rendered. I am glad to see so many Knight books on the market again, and hope that i will get to see some more.

One of the best painting books!
I have been painting for a few years, and I love the way this book breaks down the steps of painting. It is helpful to know a little color theory before using this book, but if you are comfortable mixing your colors, you'll be having a good time immediately. DeMore even gives formulas for some of the color mixing she does, which is helpful if you are a beginner. This is a fun and knowledge-filled book. It also helped me to know that Louise DeMore hasn't been an artist since birth. She has a degree in mathematics. This gives me hope that even I can be a good artist, as I embark on my full-blown art career! The book is filled with wonderful advice on how to paint: that you should make mistakes in order to learn, that you should paint faster than you are comfortable with, and that you should have fun. It is absolutely wonderful! I keep reading it and reading it.

Great book for beginners
This book teaches the basic and simple oil painting techniques for any new inspiring painters. The book also helps you get right down to it. As a beginner I am well aware that one has to start something that is very basic and easy before getting into paintings that are more complex and detailed. Highly recommended.

an essential dramatist
as fine a writer as england has produced since the second world war. these plays represent bond simply and completely, as a man of passion and vision and a writer that any reader or writer MUST reckon with if they wish to have an understanding of modern drama. genius, and handed out when the word is knowingly overused. here it is earned.

A social dramatist with insight into modern society.
If you are considering the plays of Bond there is no better place to start than here, at the beginning of his career. This volume contains his first three plays. Whether you have seen thse works performed or not is irrelevant. Just reading them is an interesting experience. This is essential modern literature! Bond's introductions (to all the volumes of his collected plays) are also essential. They have a socialist leaning but are not too preachy. Bond's self-educated working-class position gives his articulate essays a powerful punch. (A punch modern society needs.) I would buy these volumes just for these introductions, they are that good!

After this, go on to PLAYS:TWO for the brilliant LEAR.

Popular Religion in Late Saxon England: Elf Charms in Context
Published in Hardcover by Univ of North Carolina Pr (April, 1996)
Author: Karen Louise Jolly
Amazon base price: $55.00
Average review score:

Excellent and needed scholarship
Karen Jolly has produced a wonderful source of information on Anglo-Saxon charms. She makes a powerful case for the charms as elements of Anglo-Saxon popular religion, and explodes many of the myths of a pagan/Christian dichotomy that flooded the field during the age of patristic readings, and that have returned under the guise of neo-paganism in our own popular culture. One cannot claim to be a scholar of the Anglo-Saxon charms without having read this book.

A very interesting book.... keeps you turning pages
the book is great, you see, cause it's informative and incredibly detailed. It's obvious much work went into the book, and that much research was done. The book, however, isn't for those just starting out in the field of charms and magic... you should have a little background before reading the book. It's more for the historical reader then just any plain person... details on spells are also found in the book. Just plain great

Straight Forward
I have to give it to Dr Rita Louise on this one. Most books you read addressing spiritual development seem to be written for someone that is spiritually evolved. Rita takes you step by step through a realistic process that can improve your life. She helps you understand how your "power within" relates to your everyday life and how to change it for the better. I recommend.

Power Within
I have always been interested and fascinated by psychic abilities. With reading this book and going through the simple exercises that the author has provided I was able to tap into my own psychic ability!!! I was totally amazed. The the step by step exercises made learning about my abilites so easy. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn and develop thier own abilities.

Excellent resource
As a tutor at a university Writing Center, I have found this book very useful. The sample tutoring sessions are very realistic and can teach new tutors to gently and skillfully direct a student to come up with his or her own answers. Also useful are the brainstorming and organizing techniques. A person with no teaching or tutoring experience can pick up this book and learn how to tutor effectively.

Helpful!
I had to read this book for a class entitled "Teaching Writing." It contains a lot of useful information on tutoring-I applied some of the principles to the students I tutored, and our sessions became much better! I highly recommend it!
