Thank You, Mrs. Horning
"...But I have promises to keep. And miles to go before I sleep. And miles to go before I sleep."
Those are probably the most meaningful word I've ever heard. To me, they mean that you have to do the right thing, because, when you die, you need a clear consience to go to heaven.
That Duane is racist doesn't surprise me. There are a lot of racist people in this city, unfortunately. The fact that he changed this quality was, in a way, enlightening. It reminded me that just because someone is different from me, doesn't mean there's something wrong with them. In other words, people who are different should not only be accepted, but treated with equal kindness and understanding. They're one of God's children.

Thank you, Mrs. Horning, for theses valuable lessons. See you at church!
From, Katie

Be ready to look at yourself
Incredible book! I could hardly put it down once I started reading. Not only was the storyline interesting and entertaining, but it made me look inside of my self. I had to ponder my own prejudices and also give thanks for the special Tonys who made a difference in my life just by letting me know them. It got the message about loving yourself and your fellow human beings across without being "preachy" or judgemental. I would highly recommend this book.

My Experiance with Promises to Keep
This book was very well written. i am 13 years old and this book really spoke to me. I could not put it down. it really gives and inside view of the persicutoin of all people who are of a different religon or skin color. i happen to be a little dark so when i was younger i was made fun of and this book reminded me. that is not in a bad sense, but it made me relize that i am luckly to be different and that where all different in our own little special ways. I think there should a sequal to this book. it leaves you witha hunger for more and a felling of curiosity. this book is great!!! i really enjoyed it. o and bye the way my name is matt.s p.s i know mrs Horning and she is cool to!!!

A fast moving novel!
This is a very fast moving, action packed, enjoyable book! A great compliment to the previous Deryni novels. A must read and a gauranteed favorite of all ages.

One of the best
This review is actually directed at all Deryni novels. I havent read them for a few years and have moved several times and only have 5 or 6 of the total deryni series but am going to buy all of them again. They are among the best books I have ever read and I have a large collection of about 150 books. If you are a fan of SciFi/Fantasy you will love this book. Without giving away too much this is one of the most pivotal of all the books by giving away some of the intrigue and a double person?

One action packed, suspenseful book coming at you!
Suspence, intrigue, mystery, and humor, all packed into one book. This book goes into the Protocol of Orin, a guide to many ancient, complicated Deryni practices. The plot is excellent and this book is guarenteed to keep you on the edge of your seat!

Essential kayaking book
This is a fabulous book on sea kayaking. I loved reading it because of the very useful information and mix of serious and humorous writing styles. A must read - and you'll want to read it several times to soak up all the great information. Highly recommended for any kayaker. His exploits are impressive and inspiring.

The Bible of the Sport
There are a number of good books on kayak technique, but Dowd's is the bible of the sport, and with good reason. He's been kayaking for over thirty years, and he's done some of the most difficult voyages in kayaking history. He's specific in his recommendations, but open minded, too. He favors feathered paddles, but he understands the advantage of unfeatehred paddles, and allows how they may be superior in many conditions.

Dowd's advice isn't based on theory, but on experience. He's not afraid to admit his own mistakes, and in this latest edition, he desribes how he's changed a lot of his opinons on the rescue techniques he's taught in the past. He's realistic, and realizes that not every kayaker is going to develop a bombproof roll or be able to perform the Borze's paddlefloat rescue; he endorses alternate techniques like he (somewhat contentious) Sea Wings.

What it boils down to is this: Whatever other books you may own, whatever lessons you may have taken, whatever your level of experience- you need this book.

Comprehesive and readable, good practical advice
I first read his 1988 edition as I was just getting into sea kayaking. I have since built 3 singles and a triple and have done week-long trips in Prince William Sound, Puget Sound, Sea of Cortez, and New Zealand. So I'm now fairly experienced and yet still learn (relearn?) new information and techniques when I reread it.

I especially appreciate Dowd's emphasis on self-rescues as opposed to assisted rescues. So many rescues that work in a pool with an unloaded boat are impossible in 38F water, 3-foot seas, with 150 pounds of gear in your touring kayak. And yet that is when you really need a solid rescue technique.

His references to some of the epoch, historic and recent, long-distance expeditions are inspirational. When you're slogging 5 miles back to camp against a 15-knot wind, it helps to remember that people have paddled across the Atlantic and that your task is doable.

Be safe, go see cool places, happy paddling. -David Thomas

wonderful little book!
the author is many times blessed to have such a creative, literary, and wise mother ... i can only imagine that these traits must be genetic! anyone who wants a glimpse into a magical childhood should read this book.

Refreshing thought on young adulthood
I loved the book and thought it was so well written. It gave an inside view into children's thinking that was so true. I am 75 years of age but it made me remember what it was like to be a child. Anyone, especially of the female persuasion, will enjoy this book.

A Child hood Odyssey
I read this sweet and charming book in less than an hour. The author has delved into her childhood memories and come up with some real gems which she shares with us in both an honest and humorous way. I found a great deal of everyday wisdom for parents in her clear revelations. Any parent who happens upon this modest book will be fortunate. Good tips! And I do envy the pure and pleasant memories of the writer's childhood. We should all be so fortunate!

Stories of courage and spiritual insight
Katherine Martin's Women Of Spirit gathers stories of courage and spiritual insight from the women who lived unusual lives. Stories of spiritual guidance and how these women made a different in their worlds prove inspiration and absorbing, with the book providing sections based on the type of spirit exhibited by each.

Human courage in ordinary lives
This book is full of stories from average women who decided to take a stand for themselves or for someone else and suddenly found themselves making a difference in the world. Julie Su was one year out of law school when the slave like conditions of an El Monte sweat shop were uncovered. No one wanted to take the case of illegal Thai immigrants against big business so she did.
Kathy Buckley was born deaf, misdiagnosed and placed in an institution of the mentally retarded. She didn't start learning to speak until she was 8 yrs old - She now is a motivational speaker for others who are often "unseen and unrecognized." Most of the women in this book live average lives like me and I found their acts of courage very inspirational because I could relate to them. It makes you want to cheer for women who color outside of the lines, "good girls" who don't always behave as they are told. These women face fear and keep going. The chapters are short, inspiring to read, and there are contact numbers for each women in the back of the book. Very cool. It's a inexpensive gift that packs a wallop.

Reaffirming the American Woman's Spirit
In a time of terrorism, violence and uncertainty, Women of Spirit showcases courageousness, spunk and fortitude - true American attributes. The stories are both uplifting and fascinating. A great gift for the person in your life who is seeking inspiration.

Unfinished Christmas Gift
Review of Katherine Paterson 1979 Angels and Other Strangers: Family Christmas Stories. New York:Harper Trophy By Pamela Wright, Ph.D. This book contains moving stories that might be a nice accompaniment to Christmas family devotionals. Some stories also might be a good selection for a mother-daughter reading group, provided the daughters are mature. Paterson's characters, though set in seventies America, pull us into their worlds: a confounded minister, a mother who has recently suffered bearing a dead baby, a young girl who isn't sure she likes her new baby brother, and Woodrow Kennington (child theologian), all exist like gameboard characters in various positions in relation to God. All are listening; it turns out, for that voice, that song, that metaphor which will draw them into His light. Unlike much of today's TV fare Paterson's stories do not always have pat resolutions. Instead, they teach those infinitesimally small movements in which God reworks human souls. Many characters are awkward Christians, doing good but not always knowing how to accomplish it without danger or distress. One minister's mother comes to babysit in the place of a young girl who is to play Mary in the annual church play. Her efforts at tending the young baby in the house initially provoke rage in the baby's mother. Yet this rage is smoothed out as are other difficulties of Paterson's characters, even though the total context which challenges their Christianity is not transformed. My favorite story "Tidings of Joy" is a story of a mother who struggles to explain to herself and her son the reason for her baby being born dead. It is her encounter with a creche that brings her some illumination which frees her from her agonized search for blame to a new understanding of how pain, death, and suffering touch us all. Smiles, in addition to these pictures of pain, also abound in "Angels". We warm to tough foster kids and a little girl named Elizabeth who's afraid she's going to be jailed for punching out her new baby brother. Paterson lived in Japan for many years asa missionary. She moves us Eastward to Japan in one story to remind us that the Christmas story can be told with love anywhere in the world, even in the face of persecution. Love rings round all these stories - in one story a father hunts for a lost son with the indefatigability of love to find the lost son is beginning responsible love himself. In another of these stories, a minister abandons the safe world of a mundane Christmas to search for a lost soul in a den of despair, even though his Christmas schedule is scuttled. To find this book you may end up in the juvenile section of your library or bookstore, which is where I found my copy. However this book is not for adolescent Christians but those for who mature enough to know Christmas is an unfinished gift. For these Christians we must not only receive the gift but accept the dilemma and hope that we incur in giving to others as we are given.

Simply Wonderful
Once again Katherine Paterson wrote a book that's full of life and feeling and that fills your heart with warmth, love and care.

This book kicks butt!!!
This book was a very funny and distinguished. It had a whole bunch of bad language so I wouldn't share it with your younger children. It is a christmas book so it will have a whole bunch of little stories in it. The titles incluede Maggies gift and a lot of others. I really enjoyed this book, hope you do to!

The best Tobias book ever!!!!
I'm normaly not a big fan of Tobias books, but this is the exception, I recomened it to everyone. Tobias only lives because Visser 3 slips up big time. I was very suprised to find out who Tobias's dad is, and why he was on Earth, I would never have expected an Andalite Prince to run away and hid on Earth. But it dose, in my opinion at least, explain the way Tobias acts when he meets Elfangor, In "The Invasion"

Finally!
When I read the caption on the book, I yelled, "Finally!Tobias finds out who his father is!" And he does! And who itis-that is a really cool secret. But Tobias is also in a big dilemma. A woman named Aria has shown up and claims to be his cousin. Should Tobias go and live with her? But then he discovers the fatal truth. Aria is really Visser 3-which would mean death if the Visser found out who Tobias really was. But why is Visser 3 pretending to be Tobias's cousin? Find the answer in this action-packed, exciting book! (Sorry if I sound like a lying magazine, but it really is all that.) K.A., if you read this, I would like to see more romance between Rachel and Tobias!

The Truth Is FINALLY Reveled
So, the Bird-Boy has someone on his tail. A mysterious cousin appears on the scene. (Luv the suspence, huh?) Says she has Tobias's dad's will. Tobias finally finds out who his father really is. You do know his father is if you've read The Ivasion. If you didn't, then read the book.

Educational While Entertaining!
Great plot. Enjoyed the mix of textbook material and the fictional story.

A Fun Read with Lots of International Business Insights
This was a very informative and enjoyable "educational" novel. Lots of info about accounting and business issues (e.g. ethics) mixed into a fun adventure story. The action moves from Atlanta to Europe to India. A great mix of textbook info and a mystery novel.

The Bottom Line is Great Reading
This is a great book that incorporates various accounting and business topics into an adventure story...

A Must-have Book for Fluid Mechanics Researchers!
This is the best and the most classical fluid mechanics book that i have read. Read it through carefully and you will get much from it. Reading it from time to time can give you many new knowledge every time.

Applause
An excellent resource. A tough act to follow for any other author of BLT books.

Another ChE classic!
This book is as much as a classic as BSL's "Transport Phenomena" (the bible) - it surely is a "holy" book to me!

Good book for younger readers
This book is very good, a lot of quality like any American Girl book. Please remember that this is not a book about one of the AG Doll characters, but a new girl. The story is easy to follow and has a very surprising ending. How Charlotte overcomes her worst fear to help her brother is a really good point. I also liked how she seemed very close to her brother fighting in WWII for the Navy and was really concerned for him. A good read for girls (or boys, too) ages 10-12. Good capturing of the time period, and the "Peek into the Past" is cool.

Good Book
Charlotte's older brother Jim is in the services for world war two. Charlett wants to help but she doesnt know how. when she finds a old bottle cap on the street she gets her hole school to help with the metal drive. When they finally get two old classrooms full of metal it all disappears Charlotte is shure it was stolen her new friend Pete wants to get more metal to show the thief they won't stand for it. When Robbie [Charlotte's brother]breaks his hand and can't work in the mill while Charlotte helping he sees a big pile of metal across the river he gets Charlotte to help get it. But this is thair metal how did it get here? Charlotte, Robbie, and Pete stay in a boat over night for two nights before they found the thief. Who is it and why did they do it. Find out when you read Voices On Wisper Bend.

A Voice In Favor
This history mystery takes place in 1942. America has joined the fighting in World War II and the normal patterns of everyday life have been disrupted. Charlotte's brother is in the Navy, her mother is working in a local factory, and her father and his tugboat are very busy hauling freight on the Monongahela River. Charlotte has started a drive at her school to collect scrap metal. Before they can send their scrap to the local mill, however, it disappears.

This is another very good story for kids. The mystery isn't quite as compelling as some of the others in this series, but that is made up for by its depiction of the difficulties of wartime life. How much families missed sons who had gone off to fight, the anxiety felt even by the children when the "brown car" that carries notification that somebody has been killed is seen in the neighborhood, and the unfair suspicions aimed at people from different ethnic backgrounds. Young girls will also be able to identify with Charlotte, the main character, as she struggles to overcome a deep personal fear and help her younger brother at a critical moment in the story.

Girls in the 9 to 12 age group will enjoy this book and benefit from its lessons, both historical and personal, at the same time. My daughter did. Definitely recommended.
