Augusto Pinochet: Dialogos Con Su Historia

A very interesting book.
Reviewing the listing of books in connection with Chile's former President Augusto Pinochet, I detect that in English there is a lack of impartial publications regarding the difficult years of the so-called "Unidad Popular" (Allende's regime), which drove to Chile's military government. In Chile there is plenty of information on all sides. We Chileans lived the critical years from the end of the sixties to 1990, and obviously for us the opinions on the figures of Salvador Allende and Augusto Pinochet are quite divided. This book is very interesting for Spanish-speaking readers, because it depicts several personal aspects of the personality of former President Pinochet, and has been written by one of Chile's most famous journalists. If books like this one were available in English, the true of the history of Chile would be easier to understand for foreigners.

Lots of good stuff to bake as gifts
The synopsis that appears with this book, is not for this book at all. There is no mince pie or ginerbread in this book. This is no countdown calendar, either.

However, I really like this book for what it does have: cookies that pack well to mail to faraway friends, some interesting biscotti recipes (I can't wait to try the cranberry pistachio one), and special holiday breads and cakes, including some unusual fruitcakes (one made with dried berries instead of that yucky, gooey stuff in most fruitcakes).

Base Pairs

A Powerful Invocation of Language
I made a very wise literary purchase recently. I had just learned of the new publisher of poetry, Swan Scythe Press, and ordered several of its chapbooks. The first one I read was Maria Melendez's "Base Pairs." I was immediately caught up by Melendez's unusual rhythm and word-use in the first stanza of the first poem, "The Bothered-By-Questions Method":

"How do you tell the difference?" "Lunate scar within the ligule
signals Great Basin witch grass."
(The new-moon birthmark on his underarm--)
"Am I prying?"

As you can see, we are immediately thrown into a conversation with words that seem both familiar yet strange. Where is Melendez taking us? What is she telling us? We are sucked into her world in this way. She mixes in a few prose-poems such as "Sensing Home: Aural" where easy vernacular tells us a story of culture with concise beauty. My favorite poem is "In Birute's Camp," a fearsome telling of the rape of a researcher's assistant by a male ex-captive orangutan.

These poems are not meant to lull and comfort the reader. Melendez offers us powerful, evocative and surprising language to tell important stories, stories about life and all its shadows. She also offers the reader a nice feature: She ends her chapbook with notes on selected poems to give a bit of background to help us know a little about where some of her ideas come from. This is a beautiful, enchanting little book.

Basics
The Basics of Artistic Drawing is an OUTSTANDING book. I have learned so much and whenever I review the materiel I learn even more. There are so many helpful hints. It is a book that keeps teaching; if you have any questions just review the section on that topic and your question will more than likely be answered. With the step by step instructions anyone can learn how to draw, shade, and paint. I am very impressed. This is a well thoughtout course with the student in mind. A lot of course books have the teacher in mind, this book is definately made for me as the student. THANKS!!!

The Beat Generation in various forms
This catalogue has excellent photographs that gives one a sense of the attitude of the Beat Generation. Everyone is familiar with the writers of the period, but not everyone knows about art generated during those years. This catalogue gives a review of art, film, and writing being created at the time. Not only that but it devotes a chapter to women and a chapter to minorites working during the time period. A good source of information for anyone interested in the 1950's to the early 1960's.
