Are you ready for a little fun?!?
Forget Dr. Phil, if you truly are down-in-the-dumps what you need is a good laugh. And this little book delivers!!! I don't know who the ladies who wrote 'I love my hair!' are, but they sure know how to put a smile on your face. My girlfriends and I sat around all night reading the affirmations & exercises out loud to each other until we were falling out of our chairs laughing. Hadn't had that much fun in a while...definitely a recommended read & gift!

Real life problems with witty and smart solutions
I have another book by these authors, so when I saw this I bought it, and my friends at work and I have been laughing at it every day since. It's true what it says- it makes you feel better- it's total comic relief and smart & helpful at the same time like no other book I've seen. It's not just one of those other books that has stupid observations and really says nothing- it really addresses the need/problem you might have and provides a solution- even if it's tongue-in-cheek. This is great for an uplifting and fun gift, or even to keep at home or on your desk for a good boost during the dull work day- try it, you'll definitely " really feel better!"

Cervantes' Heir
The books of Eca De Queiros are not easy to find. I read about him a long time ago and then slowly began picking the books up as I found them one by one. Three so far but there are others. This is the most polished of the three but the other two I have, The Relic(now available)& The City and the Mountains(availability uncertain), are really good too. I have to say my favorite is The City and the Mountains because it so funny. This novelist is funny & not many 19th century novelists are. In The City and the Mountains those two locations are compared by the wealthy protaganist to see which one suits him better, neither location is spared this novelists eye for comedy which one can tell gave him a lot of pleasure, the laughs in this book make you glad to be human. The Illustrious House of Ramirez is a more serious work. It has some funny parts but the comedy is of a higher nature. Since HISTORY is one of its topics both national identity and personal identity are subjected to this fine writers sympathetic ridicule but you feel the tragedy of those topics too while you are laughing at how clever the whole plot is. It is a grander work, further reaching than the one I mentioned as my favorite, and will probably appeal to more readers who want significant, not just hilarious, fare. However, if you read Illustrious House and still want more find the others too. Eca De Queiroz writes as well as any other 19th century writer judging by the translations I've read. Of them I think he is most often compared to Flaubert, he certainly sees through all the passing fads and illusions of the day in the way that one did. As for the Relic it is a very clever plot which hinges on a find which draws into question our religious heritage. More HISTORY but unless you can enjoy the opulent prose for its own sake its kind of a one idea book. Clever idea though it is. I think it said above that this novelist was for people with large foreign lit. collections. I will agree with that. But if you've read all the big names at least once you will just appreciate this rare find all the more.

A (wonderful)case of "anguish of influence".
This is a classical case of "anguish of influence" as Eça is attempting, above all, when portraying the chief character, to write an ersatz Mediaeval historical novel in the manner of his great predecessor and adversary, the great Romantic writer Alexandre Herculano. One could say that Eça had, late in life, made peace with something he had spend all his adult life refusing to admit as deserving of praise, and when he finally surrendered, to have done so by means of a kind of "fanfic". However, this fanfic was rendered by Eça in his costomary -and wonderful - ironic manner, as the glories of the Portuguese past portrayed in the short novel written by the hero are each moment contrasted to the pettiness and mediocrity of the present. Neverthless, Eça closes the novel by meking peace with the Portuguese bourgeois society of his day, ultimately proposing a kind of future Portuguese "Manifest Destiny", consisting in the making of a Portuguese African Empire (anyway, one can say that his support of such Portuguese colonial adventures is half-hearted, to say the least). Despite this obvious political blunder - even at the time - Eça as always excels in his usual ironic qualities, tempered in this late novel by a quality of kindness not to be found so easily in his previous novels. Deserves to be read and known in English grab.

Developmentally Appropriate Dictionary
This dictionary is a wonderful resource for children ages 8-10 years old who want to learn English/Spanish. The vocabulary is introduced through 16 scenes, 6 songs, and 1 poster and is arranged to provide optimal learning. The scenes follow a logical progression and take the form of an ordinary day in the life of a child. Each scene pertains to a specific time of the day and all the vocabulary introduced in that scene is relevant to a specific topic. For example, scene one occurs at 6 o'clock in the morning and the vocabulary that is introduced pertains to the morning. This dictionary is also wonderfully illustrated. Each scene is appealing and attractive utilizing bright colors and detailed artwork. Children will surely enjoy looking at the scenes, which will increase the likelihood of them learning the vocabulary. All the vocabulary in the book is reinforced through a series of activities provided at the end of each section. These activities have many formats in which children will not get bored and tiresome.

The Larousse Active Dictionary for Beginners is a wonderful resource for parents, teachers, and children alike.

an attractive and useful book
the pedagogy is efficient and the progression clearly stated. the illustrations are appealing to every kid. the poster is worth to sit on the wall, colorful and full of life. the songs style is awesome.

The Life and Artistry of Maria Olenina-d'Alheim

Tumanov's Book Celebrates Maria Olenina-d'Alheim
Here are the excerpts from the review which appeared in Edmonton Journal on December 23, 2000:

"The "supporting players" of classical music are very often relegated to the margins and footnotes of musical history. Even though they may have been among the most influential and important people of their time, the judgment of time has worked against them. In his book The Life and Artistry of Maria Olenina-d'Alheim, retired Edmonton professor Alexander Tumanov has found a way to not only acknowledge one of these supporting players, but also to shed light on an area of music close to his own heart. In her career, Olenina-d'Alheim was regarded as a singer of the first order-not, perhaps, in sheer beauty, but in the way she dramatically shaped each song. From Russia, Olenina-d'Alheim found fame and success in Paris. But no doubt the singer's greatest contribution to music was in helping the western world discover the music of her homeland composers-and no one more than Modest Mussorgsky. Tumanov's chronicle uses, wherever possible, the words of the participants themselves in the life of Olenina-d'Alheim. The result vividly captures the spirit and flavour of the time and place. Nadia Boulanger, Alfred Cortot, Mili Balakirev-some of the great artistic lights in the early 20th century figure into mercurial, bright and long life of the artist, who lived to 101. The story Tumanov helps to tell is a worthwhile and interesting one- and makes you wonder about the others who have, as yet, laboured unremembered to make classical music what it is to us." D.T. Baker, Classical Music

An Intriguing Book About a Singing Artist
The following review appeared in the authoritative Choice Magazine which publishes definitive reviews of current books for academic libraries:

"Even in the scholarly community, the name of Maria Olenina-d'Alheim is little known. Yet she enjoyed a long and brilliant career as performer and public personality, greatly furthering European recognition of the Russian art song, particularly the songs of Mussorgsky. Tumanov has written a documentary biography in which events of the artist's life and work are told largely in the words of the protagonist herself. Early childhood and youth, career beginnings, an international career, the history of the House of Song (which she founded, together with her husband, Pierre d'Alheim), her long years of exile, and her return to Russia are deatailed. Olenina-d'Alheim is presented as a forgotten, creative, rebellious artist who had a major impact on the performance world. Extensive notes and index add a scholarly touch to this intriguing book about an early-20th-century singing artist." -- R. Miller, Oberlin College

As part of my studies in the University of PR, I had the extraordinary experience of reading "the soul" of Jose Maria Arguedas. He trully wrote from his heart about his lack of belonging of either culture he was exposed or came from. As a Hispanic dealing with Hispanics in the States, I strongly recomend this book as an eye opening to the struggles that other people have faced in their life.

Soul Saving
I am first generation Mexican American and I had been struggling with a lot of the very same issues that the book talks about. It has explained many things to me about the Latino culture that I could not before put into words. It has helped me so very much to first of all, know that I am not alone and am not crazy, and secondly, that there are ways to deal with this conflict of having two cultures in a healthy more productive manner rather than simply becoming enchilada. My friends and I have had very very very lengthy discussions about the subjects of having two cultures, dealing with our moms who were born and raised in the Old World Traditions, experienced suffering and humiliation for not being traditional and particularly the difficulty of finding the 'ideal' man versus getting the 'real' man. This book has put words to my old feelings and I am eternally grateful. It is, by far, one of the most enlightening and soul saving books I have ever read - and I read A LOT!

The Maria Paradox
I recommend this book to all immigrant women. It is such a magnificent book for women that come to this country from afar.
