Floral beauty
This book is a great source for crafters or artists. There are numerous illustrations of great quality. I bought two -- one to cut up and one to keep!

This is a gorgeous book!
I couldn't resist this book because I simply like to look at beautiful things - the prints of flowers & insects are exquisite. I like the manageable shape & size of this book, as well as the texture of the paper (very good quality for such a modestly priced book.) Best surprise however, was the information about Maria Sibylla Merian provided at the back of the book - she was a fascinating woman: artist, explorer, botanist, publisher, designer & teacher of embroidery, and provider for her family. I intend to collect more books of her work.

I great Historical story.
"Maria's Story 1773" is perfect for young readers, but can reinforce Colonial history to older readers, as well. The story will keep your attention and is a quick read. This book is too young for me, but I still enjoyed it. I really felt torn between the mother's feeling of telling the news and freedom of speech, but also felt for Maria, who felt that if her mother published articles that the community wouldn't like, they wouldn't get the newspaper contract again, which would lead to losing everything. What is great about the "Colonial Willamsburg" series, is that readers are learning about ordinary people who really existed. Without this series, I doubt these people, like Maria, would get acknowledge for their hard working lives. After finding out Maria's life in the epilogue, I felt sorry for her and her losses. I recommend.

The fifth historical story from the Young Americans series.
The year is 1773, and nine-year-old Maria Rind is growing up in Williamsburg, Virginia, with her four brothers. When her father dies, the family's life changes forever. Instead of spending her days with her children, Maria's mother must take on her late husband's job of printing the Virginia Gazette. While her older brother, William, gets to help his mother and her cousin, John, print the paper, Maria is left to the tiresome task of caring for her three younger brothers. She is unable to help with the paper because of her poor reading and writing, a result of there being little time for her parents to teach her. With the loyalties of everyone in the Colonies increasingly divided as war looms on the horizon, Maria is worried that her mother's anti-British articles will cause her to lose the government printing contract. This book brought to life the years before the Revolutionary War. Maria was a real child who grew up in Colonial Williamsburg, and the author has done a wonderful job of telling her story.

One of the most beautiful works of Latin-American literature. A young man discovered the power of love when he fallen in love with the virginal Maria. A story to read only to remember how difficult being human can be.

Insightful Observations
Meditations on Quixote is the first major work Jose Ortega y Gasset published in Spain; as such, the reader will stumble across several infant notions that were later subjected to major philosophical treatments by Ortega. Naturally, therefore, this book is often passed over and dismissed. However, I believe it holds within its pages a very mature, coherent argument. It should be noted that Don Quixote is not actually the central focus of these meditations. Rather, Ortega only delves into Cervantes's great novel during the second half of the book (the "first" meditation), using that knight of rueful countenance to clarify his analysis. I will not attempt to explain the philosophy presented in this book, as I feel there is a reason it takes hundreds of pages to express these concepts. It is such with all philosophy; think of it as a food - I can compress all the contents of a five-star dinner into a dense pill and give that to you, but it would not serve justice to the original pieces. Having said that, I can certainly relay (as another reviewer has) the famous expression "I am myself and my circumstance." Ortega puts significance into what this "circumstance" is composed of, mentally dividing the material things in life and their deeper meaning, explaining that this deeper meaning is just as real as the material surface. He then leads into the concept of man as a hero via his own will ("the will to be oneself is heroism"), focusing on Don Quixote, and modern literature in general (as opposed the ideal epics of old), as examples. Julián Marías makes interesting notes throughout. Recommended!

The starting point of Ortega's philosophy
The great Spanish philosopher Ortega y Gasset left many followers, some of them also important thinkers, like Julian Marias. But most are common people who became much more educated and civilized persons by reading his wonderful books. Ortega was one of the rare species of philosophers who expresse his ideas in a very clear prose. Others in this line are Plato and Augustine, or Bertrand Russell, an Ortega contemporary. Meditations on Quixote is a small book where the master strives to give a synthesis of his thought. A synthesis of this synthesis could be given by two of his phrases: "Yo soy yo y mi circunstancia" (I am myself and my circumstance) and " I only offer a way of considering things" (modus res considerandi). A great philosopher and a great writer. His was my main intellectual influence.

Modern Electrochemistry: Ionics
Published in Paperback by Plenum Pub Corp (1998)
Authors: John O. Bockris, Amulya K. N. Reddy, and Maria Gamboa-Aldeco
Amazon base price: $54.50

A Bible of Electrochemistry Education

The difference of this second Ed. from the first one is huge; the author actually rewrote ca. 50% of the first volume (Ionics) and ca. 70% of the second volume (Electrodics, still in writing), covering literature up to later 90's.

For classroom use, the most important addition of the edition is the problem set, which are extremely helpful for students on introductory level.

It was a great honor of me to be invited by the author to write part of the problem sets for all chapters in Vol.1 and a few chapters in Vol.2, and I can tell you that the author and the problem writers put in a lot of effort to elucidate the fundamental electrochemistry while also help original thinkings of the students on more advanced electrochemistry issues.

The best introductory book in Electrochemistry
This book By Bockris and Reddy, is the best book you can hope to lay your hands, if you are looking for an good introduction and thorough description of the fundamentals. This is definetely one book, or rather two books which no library should be without, including libraries of graudate students. The style of the authors is extremely simple, and reading this book is like reading a story book. you would find it quite difficult to keep the book down once you have picked it up.

An absolutely fantastic book, though slightly on the costlier side.

Montessori Method

Author: Maria Montessori

a classic work on child pedagogy
Here, Maria Montessori introduces a scientific approach to pedagogy. The Montessori schools which she established and developed are intended for children three to seven years of age. The children are allowed as much freedom as possible and are provided with "didactic materials" which are various artifacts which they can use to educate themselves. They are supervised by a single directress whose primary task is to observe the children and direct their efforts by explaining to them how various didactic materials are used (it's very simple, but nothing is obvious to a young child). This book offers some valuable concete advice, but its primary use to me was as an introduction to the approach of scientific pedagogy. The basic premises as I understand them are that (1) children have a natural desire to learn and (2) one can learn how to live in freedom and only by being free. These premises are fully supported and fleshed out in the book. The Montessori method achieved startling results, with four year old children (on average) learning to be masters of themselves, disciplined, benevolent, self-confident, and capable of reading and writing. Every educator should be familiar with Maria Montessori's work.

This book is incredible!
I couldn't get through more than 2 pages of this book at a time, because my eyes kept swelling with tears. I purchased this book as a gift for my adult daughter, and hope that she passes it on to hers someday.

FROM A MOTHER'S HEART TO HER DAUGHTER'S SOUL
A POSITIVE WAY TO SHARE A FEW CHARISHED LOVING MOMENTS WITH YOUR MOM/DAUGHTER IN OUR BUSY WORLD. THE PHOTOGRAPHS WILL TOUCH ALL MOTHERS HEART'S AND THE TEXT WILL EXPLAIN TO A DAUGHER'S HEART THE FEELING WORDS CAN NOT DO JUSTICE FOR. IT SHOWS AND TELLS THE DEPTH OF LOVE THAT PARENTS FEEL FOR THEIR DAUGHTERS, BUT FOCUSES ON THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN MOTHHERS AND DAUTHERS. THIS ALSO MAKES A BEAUTIFUL GIFT OF THE HEART TO PASS ON TO THE NEXT GENERATION.

A Great Second Helping to Firstever Spa Cookbook
It just keeps getting better! Not only was Safdie ahead of his time with the "Spa Food," but the second helping ("New Spa Food") continues the tradition. I've made wonderful, healthy dishes that amaze guests and taste wonderful. Indeed, as is true of the first volume, "Spa Food," "New Spa Food" is a must for every kitchen.
