A Must-Have Book
This is a beautiful book. The words and images are simple and strong. There is no sappiness or "political correctness" about these people. The story feels natural, it rings true in a beautiful, effortless manner. The characters are strong in themselves and there is no TV-movie sentimentality. This is great reading and looking for all ages.

A bright, fun story with lots to ponder
I read this book to my son's first grade class and the kids loved it! The story and the art are vivid and captivating, but the best part was the discussion we had afterward. The kids had lots of ideas about how a blind person could experience color. It was a really special book to share. I highly recommend it.

A delightful read
I found this book to be very believable and tastefully done. I thoroughly enjoyed every story. Within the first week I read it several times before the impact even began to wear off.

It helped me to realize a lot about myself and the role this type of activity can play in the human mind and heart. I am not into senseless pain and punishment, but a "smarting backside" can have very positive effects if brought to that state by the right hand - as this book shows so well.

I will definitely be looking for other works by Ms. Madison. Salud!

Clearly the best book of its kind
There are few books of this kind which are written with style, intelligence and a thorough knowledge of the subject to the degree of The Reckoning. It is a collection of short stories, some from the male and some the female perspective. Although the stories are set in the modern era there is a timeless quality to them so that lovers of the Victorian era books will take to it very well. It does not have the kind of self-indulgent, unbelievable fantasy drivel that is sadly so typical from male authors of this genre. You will not be rolling your eyes and saying "Oh brother!" here. Ms. Madison has done an excellent job including characters of all ages and walks of life and at the same time manages to breathe real life into each. Every situation is as believable as if the reader had experienced them in their own life. I highly recommend this book and feel that female readers will find it particularly accessible.

It is sad that this book is so hard to find. I have given away every copy I ever owned as gifts and regret it now. If it remains out of print it will be a true loss as it remains head and shoulders above most other books in its class.

Refranes Usados En Puerto Rico

You'll Be Speaking Like an Elder in No Time!
In traditional Latin American/Iberian culture, proverbs are a way of transmitting ideals or messages to one another in order to allow the person receiving the saying to reflect on the though a bit longer. While growing up in a traditional Puerto Rican household in New York, my parents instilled these common proverbs whenever they wanted to make a point.

In this book, published by the great editorial staff at the University of Puerto Rico Press, editor Maria Elisa Diaz Rivera shares some of the most used proverbs/sayings heard among islanders. While many of the proverbs are traditional proverbs imported from Spain (e.g. "Aunque la mona se vista de seda, mona se queda" or translated "Although the monkey dresses in silk, it is still a monkey" which really means that "fine feathers don't make fine birds") others are native to the island. Written entirely in Spanish, this book will appeal to Puerto Ricans wanting to reconnect with their culture, or anyone who has a strong admiration or interest in Puerto Rico and her people.

While it is not available on this site, another great book that covers traditional Puerto Rican proverbs is "How to Speak Puerto Rican" by Felix Hernandez. It is available on the island, and through some online catalogs that deal with Puerto Rican goods. I especially liked this book's compact size, and it's design, which allowed me to tag it along with me to work. After reading this book, you'll get a feeling of being much more wiser and reflective on life. It is a great book that should be explored by all, regardless of nationality. Students of the Spanish-language will find this book appealing, and it even makes a great gift for a friend or relative born on the island and/or raised in the island's traditions and culture.

Not even one in a generation like Maria Woodworth Etter
Bearing the emotional wounds of a tragic childhood, Maria Woodworth-Etter embarks upon the journey of motherhood only to lose her children, one heartbreak after the other. The sufferings of her life were so great that sorrow nearly broke her. I have read her book but I still don't undertand how she managed to endure. Who would have thought that God would chose such a person to imprint His Name and dispaly His power upon a generation?

If God wanted to prove that He choses the weak and foolish things of this world in order to confound the strong and the wise, He found His vessel of choice in this little woman, Maria Woodworth-Etter.

A shy and timid woman, barely able to utter a word in public, Maria Woodworth Etter became one of the most legendary vessels of God since the early church age. When she took the platform and opened her mouth He filled it with His Words, and with power. Her natural voice was small but when the anointing of God came upon her she could be heard clearly from a great distance. Travelers passing through the villages where her meetings were taking place would find themselves falling under the "slaying anointing" or "falling down anointing" as custom would call it, as they came near her meetings. Record has it that railroad men finding passengers falling down mysteriously would suddenly realize that Mother Etter was preaching nearby, and they would understand what was happening to these passengers in their railroad cars. In both the Old and New Testaments it is recorded that there were times when people could not stand in the Presence of the Power of God. And this was just one manifestation of her ministry.

Some of the greatest miracles of God ever recorded were wrought in the ministry of this unlikely little woman. An awesome record of the outpouring of the Holy Ghost in her generation, this book is an inspiration. If He did it once He can do it again. And if He could use her, perhaps He could use...well.

For every student of the great moves of God this book is a must read, and a keeper for your library. You won't want to part with it. I predict that you will make a special home for it on your shelf alongside the works of John G. Lake, Smith Wigglesworth, Kathryn Kuhlman and the few others like them.

Not sure that you believe in miracles but would like to read about them and about the people used to perform them? This is a great place to begin. But remember, faith does not come from reading about miracles, it comes from knowing the miracle giver, and by reading His book. The books of Maria Woodworth-Etter will point you there.

The power of the Holy Spirit is for today!
An anointed(still!)record of the meetings of Maria Woodworth-Etter(1844-1924)in her own words and sermons as well as contemporary reviews, testimonies of healings, and eyewitness accounts of the real power and presence of the Holy spirit . Though the coming of the Lord for the church may not have come as soon as she seemed to be saying, I believe she spoke as the Lord directed in a prophetic voice. I would recommend this book to any one searching for God as well as to those who long to see His power today.

What was theatre really like?
So...what was Euripides like during rehearsal? Kind of cranky, it appears. What did they do for special effects in the 17th century? Quite a lot, actually: floating gods and goddesses, strange animals, they had it all. First-hand accounts will show you all this and more in a fascinating book for theatre lovers. I had read this during a college course years ago, and was delighted that it's still in print. A good read and reference for those interested in theatre, literature, and history, only slightly marred by occasionally poor quality illustrations.

Excellent book for students, teachers and (even) theatergoer
The author divides the material in 14 parts: Antiquity, The Middle Ages, The golden age of Spain, Italian Renaissance, Tudor and Stewart periods, The age of Louis XIV, The restoration theater, Venetian comedy, Eighteenth century England, Weimar Classicism, Nineteenth Century England, The American Theater, European naturalism.- For each period, the author has collected more than 300 primary texts, through which we feel that the past is still next to us. The spectator's manners, the way of acting, the conditions of rehearsals, the reactions of the audience, all of them come to us through real documents. More than 80 pictures in black-and-white complete this very good edition. (The pictures are, unfortunately, not very well printed.) I really suggest this editon.

Stitches in Air: A Novel About Mozart's Mother
Published in Hardcover by Smoke & Mirrors Press (01 September, 2001)
Author: Liane Ellison Norman
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

long overdue!
Recognition of Mozart's mother is surely long overdue but it was worth waiting for this well researched, involving, and at times poetic fictional account of Anna Pertl Mozart. Not only did it make me want to read more about the Mozarts but also visit all the places in Salzburg that are associated with them. Ms. Norman is to be congratulated on illustrating so vividly why women composers (or women artists of any kind for that matter) have had to struggle so hard for recognition over the centuries. She has certainly succeeded in rescuing one ANON from obscurity.

A fascinating, entertaining, fully engaging read
Liane Ellison Norman's Stitches In Air is a compellingly written, superbly crafted historical novel about Anna Pertl Mozart, who was the mother of the legendary 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. An evolving, personal tale of conflicting family dynamics and the struggle to balance responsibilities to kin with individual freedom, Stitches In Air is a fascinating, entertaining, fully engaging read, and a very highly recommended addition to community library collections.

Sixth and last of the Green Knowe series
Odd that some of these are out of print and some aren't, but any public library with a collection dating back to the sixties should have a copy.

Stones is indeed about Roger, son of the Norman lord who built Green Knowe, and the building of Green Knowe. Like all of the series, mysterious and imaginative and full of historical detail.

Like the best books of this type, the series creates a world of which the books merely touch the surface.

Highly recommended.

The best of the Green Knowe books
Tolly, the hero of most of the other Green Knowe books, is a supporting character in this one. 'Stones' is centered around Roger, son of the Norman lord who first built Green Knowe. His travels into his future bring him into contact with Tolly, Susan, and some of the other children from the series. Without being dry and preachy, this book conveys the richness of English history along with the warmth of its characters and story.

Eye-Opening
I do not ordinarily read crime fiction but occasionally do so to pick up some local color about a place that interests me. In this case, the draw was Barcelona and Mallorca. I got much more than I bargained for, however. Maria-Antonia Oliver shows with this effort that the genre can transcend itself yet remain gripping. I dearly hope for more translations of Oliver's work.

Fast paced, funny, and socially relevant
Study in Lilac is one of those rare mysteries where you're fooled into thinking it's another run-of-the-mill detective story, only to suddenly find yourself engaged in a complex, multi-layered plot that not only delivers intrigue and suspense, but tackles sensitive social issues and examines a culture to its very roots.

Set in Barcelona, Study in Lilac begins when Private eye Lonia is hired by an antiques dealer to locate three men she claims defruaded her. Lonia investigates and soon discovers she is chasing a lie, and the truth lands her in hot water with local authorities, a ruthless crime syndicate, and her own close friends.

Things grow more complicated when Lonia becomes the reluctant guardian of a pregnant young runaway rape victim, who cannot decide to have the baby or get an abortion.

These two threads, while seemingly unrelated, eventually come together in a most unexpected twist, and delivers to the reader a no-holds barred ending that will resonate for some time after the last page is turned.

In addition, Study in Lilac also paints a vivid picture of life in Barcelona, examining the attitudes, customs, and culture of the people who live there.

HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED!!!
