Discovering Divine Love in the Play of Life : The teachings from Guru Arjun's Bhawan Akhri

Contemporary Sikhism
Jaswinder Singh's writing style allows the teachings of the Sikh Gurus to come alive by intertwining easy to understand translations of hymns and theology with contemporary life examples that we all share. The author speaks to the heart of humanity by: (1) abandoning the cultural context in which Sikhism originated, and (2)addressing the universal concerns that all human beings have, such as meaningful living, relationships, marriage, happiness, suffering, and death. This book is a gem for those who want to practice spirituality for self-discovery and persoanl growth.

Practical Spirituality
Jaswinder Singh's book is excellent for those persons longing to incorporate the wisdom of the Sikh Gurus into daily life. Jaswinder's detailed description of the relationship between the universe and the individual helps provide meaning and purpose in life. The author does a great job in showing how a life not centered around one's authentic Spiritual Self is the root cause of confusion and suffering in life. And like any other expert in healing, he provides the cure for such suffering. That is, the science of Naam meditation. I have read many books on spirituality, but this book provides mystical insights into the science of meditation that have remained relatively hidden until now.

Great Survey & Business Application
This work is somewhat pricy but well researched. Singh provides an excellent guide to the many and varied possibilities of Emotional Intelligence in a professional setting. He also suggests the framework for applying this thinking in many diverse cultures. Thought provoking and extensively documented, Singh provides an interesting read for both the expert and novice alike.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AT WORK
On 14th August 1998 at 5.00 P.M. Dr.Daniel Goleman delivered the keynote address on 'How Does Emotional Intelligence Matter at work?', at the opening of the 106th Annual Conventions of the American Psychological Association and the closing of 25th International Congress of Applied Psychology at Marriott Hotel, Sanfransisco, U.S.A. It was an amazing personal experience to walk up to him and getting photographed after the event. But he was in no mood to linger on and wallow in the glory of a Star speaker. He said he must leave because he had to attend the marriage of his daughter at 10.00 A.M. on 15th August 2001 in Washington DC, which is about 3 Hours ahead and it takes 6 hours flying time. A speaker has kept his promise and performed excellently by keeping the psychologists spellbound for fifty minutes. He bows in response to a thunderous applause. A father is in a hurry to be with his daughter in a personal event of joy, celebration and marital commitment. Rarely, people are called to enact such contrasting but deeply involving roles of profound emotional intelligence. Dr. Daniel Goleman, the author the great book of 'Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ' (1995)?, was on his way to release his recent book 'Working with Emotional Intelligence' (1998). I was overwhelmed by being a witness to a great academic event.

At home, another professional has come a long way in highlighting the core concept of EQ. Dr. Dalip Singh, a serving bureaucrat and trained HRD expert now tells the world how to identify and improve your EQ. The movement of a positive and affirmative psychology had reached India. The application of the deeper insights of psychology to work and the recognition of the role of 'Emotions at Work' had culminated. Probably, the overemphasis on the dark, problematic, negative and pessimistic issues like anxiety-stress, violence, war, drug abuse in the 20th century was in a process of balancing itself towards love, understanding, happiness and optimism in the twenty first century. What Dr. Daniel Goleman had started Dr. Dalip Singh is carrying forward.

What is professional success? Can EQ get you promoted?. How to manage your boss?. What are the levels of EQ required for various jobs?. How to handle stress and frustrations in life?. What are the consequences of low and high EQ?. Can EQ be developed?. Dr Singh answers some these questions. He further states that it is the emotional makeup (EQ) of a person which largely determines his or her professional success. It is interesting to note that so many people with high IQ fail whereas those with less intellectual endowment are extremely successful. It in increasingly recognized that IQ may account for only about 20 percent of a persons success in life. The remaining 80 percent depends largely on a person's emotional intelligence, i.e., EQ. Cognitive Skills get you the job but the emotional skills help thrive once you are hired.

Dr. John Mayer, a University of New Hampshire Psychologist had coined the term 'Emotional Intelligence' with Dr. Peter Salovey, a Yale University Psychologist in 1990. But it was the best seller by Goleman that Emotional Intelligence became a popular and practical concept. Dr.Dalip Singh, a trained psychologist and doctorate in Management and a serving administrator authors his book with an understanding that Emotional Intelligence or EQ is directly related to success at work and home and elsewhere. It is a compact, comprehensive and straightforward book with pointed direction and specific orientation. Certainly, it extends itself from the concept, its development, pervasiveness, and measurement to its application to different fields of human activity. The emphasis is on understanding, analysis and practice.

Dr. Singh defines Emotional Intelligence (EQ) as 'knowing what feels good, what feels bad and how to get from bad to good'. An academic definition refers to emotional awareness and emotional management skills, which enable you to balance emotion and reason so as to maximize your long term happiness. It include qualities such as self awareness, ability to manage moods, motivation, empathy and social skills like cooperation and leadership. Sometimes, it is easier to define emotional intelligence by showing how people with a high IQ and low EQ fail disastrously in their professional and personal lives. Certainly a critical, condescending, inhibited and uncomfortable person in comparison to a poised, outgoing, sympathetic, caring, and comfortable person may reach but hardly survive a social universe. The book has an inherent emphasis on what may contribute to corporate success. It is not a denial or neglect of intelligence but a recognition of emotional factors which is pivotal in healthy, fulfilling and productive life. The entire reader friendly narration of the message in this brief and systematic book is towards increasing recognition of emotional factors and not the denied of intellectual factors. A case is built to develop competence through self-awareness, self-regulation, communication, motivation and interpersonal skills. It dispels the myth that Emotional Intelligence does not mean merely 'being nice', giving free rein to feelings, gender bias and a genetically fixed amount of EQ. It rather emphasizes on early childhood training, education, mood management, monitoring, and professional training within the organizations towards emotional monitoring, discipline and harmony. The globalization implies networking and networking has to be positive, supportive and cooperative. The development of the theme through personality aspects, developing and applying Emotional Intelligence in organizations, managing emotions and coping with anger in organizations are apt feathers. In a way the references to the EQ of U.S. Presidents and Indian Prime Ministers are in the realm of human whereas the development of a psychometric test to measure EQ by Dr. N.K. Chadha of University of Delhi, is very significant and useful contribution for organizational research and training.

The book is technically well produced and reasonably priced. For a scholar, trainer, management expert and a layman 'Emotional Intelligence at work' has all the ingredients which will 'work'. As a professional guide the material provided in this volume is an excellent package of theory, skills, strategies and insights for self-development programme, management and administrative workshops and above all to encourage competence enhancement through harvesting of emotions. Dr.Dalip Singh has raised greater expectations by authoring a stimulating book.

A Rare Gem
I have gone through many religious books in my lifetime. But once I had got this book in hand I first and foremost considered myself the most fortunate person in this world. Actually no words can really describe what this book means to me. I never got around to any other religious book thereafter, such is the impact this book had on me. It has the rarest of spiritual knowledge. But Most amazing part is everytime I read it, I unearth something new, and everytime it is as fresh as the first time.

This book is not meant for just going through once and keeping aside, for me it is part of my life, or rather it made my life.

A fascinating life journey
This is a fascinating book. Tara Singh is an interesting individual with a strong belief system. The book describes this man's life journey. He has included his life in the Punjab, being brought up by a very harsh father, his travails serving in the Indian Army and the challenges that he faced. In so doing he presents a history of the Punjab over a number of decades, all presented through one man's personal experiences. These included suffering from illnesses with no money for getting treatment; and having to transport his pregnant wife from West Punjab to East Punjab during the partition of India. He proceeds to tell about his times in Canada which are equally fascinating. My parents emigrated to England in the 1960s so I empathized with Tara Singh immensely. However, the true character of the man comes out in the book. It is well worth reading.

The reality of hardship
The Four Quarters of the Night is a creatively scripted bibliography of an immigrant Sikh facing many hardships. Tara Singh Bains takes the reader into a timecapsule to the racial era of the 50's and 60's. In this unbias book we see how Mr.Bains dealt with having to leave behind his wife and little children in India while trying to make a living in Canada. Living with his sister and brother-in-law, Mr.Bains takes the reader through a journey of juggling several manual labour jobs to survive and how he kept his religious faith alive when faced against the pressures of trying to "fit in." Mr. Bains kept his religious spirit alive by praying and turning spritual. I was so engulfed in Mr. Bains' journey of life, I could barely put the book down. It is definately something all immigrants should read. And all those who don't know the dept of the hardships of immigrants. A book well done!

Lucid and scholarly
The most readable and trustworthy account of the history of the Sikhs yet. Sikhism has stood the test of time and stands for universal brotherhood. Here is a book that narrates the history of this glorious religion without emphasizing its recent dirty and divisive politics (as opposed to Patwant Singh's attempt at 'history')

Highly recommended for uninitiated westerners, serious scholars and history buffs.

exellent account of sikh history, a subject not many peo
there millions of sikhs all over the world, who would like to know about their heritage, in a nondistorted way. there is no reliable text that one could refer to. kushwant singh probably is the most reliable source at this point.we should not be deprived of this source of enlightenment.

Khushwant is the man
Like Train to Pakistan, this book explores a side of Indias history that was very very painful. It is a towering achievement in storytelling, and is a compulsively readable book. Khushwant Singh is a well known Delhi based journalist who views India with an unflinching eye, and populates his stories with utterly believable characters and situations. There is much tragedy, and much humour throughout the book. Do not be surprised if you shed a tear reading this one.

A deeply intimate look at a sikh family in turmoil
Khushwant Singh's genius is in plain view. This is a story of a Sikh family in the days before India's independence. The father is a minor official, a loyal servant of the British. The son is a hot blooded young revolutionary, but emotionally still a child. I Shall Not Hear The Nightingale gives the reader a window into the world of this family caught up in changing times and the turmoil they endure. It is a unique look at the relationship of the British masters with those Indians who were loyal to them, at the unravelling of that relationship, and at the heartbreaking devastation it brought to the families of Punjab.

This book is a must read for those interested in Indian history, culture, and psyche. All Britishers, Indians and Pakistanis should read it, as should students of the social impact of decolonization.

Kundalini Yoga for Body, Mind, and Beyond

Kundalini Unveiled
This is an excellent primer for the beginner and an useable reference for the more advanced yoga student. Ravi Singh avoids two of the most common problems with books on the subject of yoga which focus too heavily on either the philosophical or the physical, thus missing the point.

Singh has written an easy to follow practical guide which balances attention to the spiritual, physical, and philosophical transformations that are possible with the practice of yoga. This is also a program that anyone can follow and which will fit into the conventional or domestic life.

Kundalini yoga was originally in the domain of the common people and not meant exclusively for mystics with time to sit for days on end contemplating life, the universe, and everything. Nice work if you can get it but not a required occupation for the art of living consciously. This book will illustrate how to balance both worlds.

This is the key.

Great Introduction to Yoga
This is one of the best books I've encountered for the philosophy of yoga, its mental and physical benefits, as well as a solid plan for starting yoga.

Singh does a great job presenting the fundamentals so that beginners and experts can benefit.

I'm very happy with this book and recommend it often. It has made a positive difference in my life and others.

A Love Gone Wild
I laughed and cried over Love's Last Madness. I have long admired the poems of Darshan Singh even though only a limited number had been translated into English. Now, the Lerner and Bedi translation brings 86 of his wonderful ghazals to us in English for the first time. As in the poetry of Hafiz and Rumi, image after startling image evokes the moods and struggles of a serious mystic traveler.

While reading, I sharply felt Darshan's sense of urgency as he struggles into awakening consciousness. He says:

"If only I'd awaken, I'd perceive what this life means;
My existence now, an obsessive confusion of dreams." (4:4)

I sighed with him as he sees the world falling short of expectation. Darshan's perceptive criticisms do not spare the social institutions, both religious and philosophical, from which he turns his face. For example:

"I, too, walked the path explored by the rationalists:
The wayfarers were half asleep, their guides wandering lost." (8:3)

I shared his empathy with despairing humanity, entangled in delusion:

"Every hour is grief, each breath a sigh for the times -
Am I really living or paying for some crime?" (21:1)

I thrilled with him as he glimpses the faces of those who may guide him into reality:

"They were clothed in poverty, as humble as the dust,
But waiting at their door I saw the sovereigns of the age." (7:1)

I agonized with him as he suffers the transforming blows and testing of his guides. For this subject Darshan often uses imagery of worldly love:

"How unexpected is your visit - and to ask of my condition!
What new ingenious torture prompts you, my dear?" (83:4)

I took heart as Darshan hints at the great turning points of the mystic's immense journey. One such landmark is the transcendence of mind:

"Every mote I saw scintillating with your beauty
In a world where intellect stands bewildered." (18:4)

Another landmark is the transcendence of selfhood or ego. I could share his apprehension at the prospect of loss of self, and I vicariously exulted with him in his freedom from it:

"Of self I lost awareness, so life's secret was revealed,
A boon of my oblivion, not the fruit of my wits." (60:7)

Through Darshan's poetry I saw through an intimate window into the mind and heart of a man of our own time who deeply immersed himself in the spiritual quest. This is the record of "the anguished vigil of a love gone wild...." (22:5)

Exquisite!
Having great respect for the works of the renowned mystic Urdu poet Darshan Singh, this newly translated collection was purchased with anticipation. Thankfully, I was not disappointed. The book is high quality, with artistic formatting. And the verses of Darshan Singh? Goodness--such beauty! They move me to tears on each re-reading. It is said that translation from Urdu to English is fraught with problems and a true rendering basically impossible. Even with that as an accepted fact, any lover of mystic poetry will be enthralled by this collection.
