The Farrakhan Phenomenon: Race, Reaction, and the Paranoid
Singh seeks to understand the causes of Farrakhan's rise and its implications for the United States; religion and worldview have only the slightest importance for this author, whereas black American politics are paramount. Although shakey on the Nation of Islam (referring mistakenly to its seven daily prayers and female Fruit of Islam guards) and also on conservative politics in the United States (thinking Farrakhan shares important features with Jesse Helms and Ronald Reagan), Singh has a thorough grasp of American racial politics and a clear sense of his subject's place in them. Correctly, he de-emphasizes the importance of antisemitism to Farrakhan's message while placing much greater emphasis on his vituperative attacks on other black leaders. These are based on the leaders' social liberalism, which is so much out of tune with the electorate's conservatism: "Farrakhan's popular appeals are also in part based upon his persistent exploitation of the disjunctures between elite black attitudes and popular African-American beliefs." In Singh's view, the Nationa of Islam's (NOI) religious doctrines and Farrakhan's eclectic theological claims are most appropriately regarded as merely an embellishment of more fundamental traditionalist and populist political tenets." Arguing against those who see Farrakhan as a media creation, Singh points to his having built up a large constituency without help from the mainstream newspapers and television. He concludes from this that the best way to fend off Farrakhan's ugly and threatening influence is "to accord him the opportunity-and even the responsibility-for implementing effective political, economic, and social change." However scary this course, the author maintains, it is the best way to call a demagogue's bluff. Middle East Quarterly, December 1998

Complex and academic study of racial politics in the U.S.
Louis Farrakhan is an unusually emotive subject in the United States, inspiring extreme feelings of love or hate; feelings that are not common in the American political psyche. Robert Singh, a British academic, examines the rise of the leader of the Nation of Islam, and tries to explain his ascendency within the confines of the politics of paranoia. Stiring Stuff indeed! Yet, be warned - this is not a journalistic account of the Nation of Islam, Farrakhan's style or racial politics in America today. Those looking for an 'easy read' should turn elsewhere. Instead, this is an academic work, with all the trappings to match - the complex language, the unnecessary terminology, and the cluttered page. (Singh seems to have a particular penchant for commas, and utter disregard for full stops). Having said that, however, this work is an intellegent look at one of the most divisive and important issues in America today. Robert Singh is careful in his approach to the subject and provides worthy anaylsis. My advice? - read it slowly, stick with it and be enlightened

Get Your Booga King Now!
The pace of this book moves as briskly as that of a fry cook slapping out the patties for another day spent at one of our nation's greatest industries: fast food. At the Nation of Fry Cook, there are more patties waiting to be flame broiled for those hungry enough to slap down the moolah for the musk from the mosque -- and this book tells you how to cook 'em just right. Comes complete wid one of the Honorable and Most Reverend Louis Farrakhan's recipes for barbecue sauce.

The Feminine Principle in the Sikh Vision of the Transcendent

practice what you preach
I think nikky should practice what she preaches. She professes to be true sikh, but deep inside she is a hypocrit!! She just puts on a show. If you really examine her carefully, she is full of fraud, deciet and greed.

Good Job
This is a great book, everybody should read this. Shows the great tradition of Sikh/Non Sikh women.

Gur Fateh!

It is a long overdue feminine revolution in the Sikh Studies
The book by Nikky is both innovative and intrepretative of Sikh literature from an often totally ignored but essential perspective. Her ability to knit together her perspectives on the philosophy, ethics, mythology, romance, mystical, ethical, scriptural and historical of Sikh vision.

This book is essential meant for those Western scholars and activists for whom, the concepts of human rights, justice, and gender equality are reserved for their native culture and civilization, and rest everything elsewhere in the world is trash. Also the quality of research and her unique style, has shown the academic world that indigenous scholars do have capacities to undertake and accompalish such missions, as Nikky demonstrated. Further, her book will somehow, put a stop, albeit temporarily to the ongoing campaign of distortion and misinformation about the Sikhism.

Nikky will be remebered for her contribution in the arena of relgious studies, feminist scholarship and her service to the ordinary Sikhs.

Totally out of date - it's based on Beta 2!
This book was published in Dec 01 which means it was written using .NET Beta 2. It is now completely out of date and many of the examples just don't work. To be fair, there is an "Update" document available for download from Wrox but wht not just buy an up to date book in the first place. My recommendation is "Applied XML Programming for Microsoft .NET" by Dino Esposito, # 0735618011.

VB or C?
VB or C which is it? I don't mind books the have syntax for both VB.net and C#. I also don't mind books that have JUST C#(since I don't know C# why would I mind this?). I Like books that have JUST VB.NET since thats what I like. But this book doesn't do any of these! It provides C# only on many occasions! And as a VB.NET only programmer its awfully hard to build on C# examples. It's almost as if the authors didn't know how to code everything in VB.NET and just skipped it sometimes.

Just what you need to learn XML and .NET
Very interesting title and content. This book is very helpful to learn XML .NET features.

Infants of the Spring (The Northeastern Library of Black Literature)

don't
Don't read, don't skim it, don't waste you time! I read the book because anything I open I must finish however, this one really was a pin to complete.

I will admit, the author has a lot to say and a lot to tell you, but the way it was done. The prose, no timing, no clear thoughts and no coherence. It was all too OVER THE TOP...

He will go on to tell you a back ground of a person and then throw in the present timeline. He use the word Negro and the Ni- - ger in the same paragraph with no though why a person would use both.

I do not think a lot of work was into detailing this book. There are so many characters and none are really describe, unless they are the unused Characters, such as Pig Lady.

Out of 170 pages, the last 50 or so had some sense in them. Particularly, the notion that Negro should not be around low class white. As though we must only be around the best whites to be seen well. Where as the low class white can hang around whoever they want and not be seen ill.

The other notion is, all negros on the same page of though. People often say that we can't ever agree as a people. Well, 29 million people with one thought is not really easy. So, let me use this point as for voting. We can't get ever negro to vote for the same man, but just to get every negro to vote would be great. And in this book, this is brought up in some light. People being of the communist light, or in the rebellion stage. Well, you don't have to pick a party, but at least make sure you have the same cause. To this degree, the book had some thoughts

Too many characters
I liked the idea of the book, but Thurman almost spoiled this one by creating too many characters for the reader to keep up with? There were several characters in the book that had nothign to do with the plot, as a matter of fact, I think it is safe to say that only four characters were needed in the entire book. Infants of the Springs was a slow read, and pales in comparison to Thurman's other novel, The Blacker the Berry.

This book speaks to you!
Thurman was not the most polished of writers, but he makes up that shortcoming by having a lot to say. I was enraptured with the number of ideas present in this book, and many times I paused to consider the weight of his words.

Yes, the text is often clumsy, but the dialogue is sterling. So this is really what the Harlem Renaissance was about? I wish I could have been there. There are so many memorable characters in this book, and they all are real and possess unique personalities. Even the minor characters are fleshed out.

Buy this book and read it. You won't regret it. After reading it, I have only one question: Why isn't Thurman's third novel, INTERNE, available? I can't think of any author to whom to compare Thurman. His dialogue reminds me a bit of Hemingway, but not really. Reading Thurman is a unique experience!

All that glitters is not Rob Vieira
I had mistakenly thought that Wrox books were held to a higher standard. First getting a taste for them going through both of Rob Vieira's two SQL Server Programming books and regarding them as the finest technical books I've ever seen. However this Professional SQL Server 2000 XML is a disappointment. Part of the problem lies with having 12 different authors because it seems a bit jumpy. I think I'll really try to limit my future purchases to single source efforts. Also, no care was taken with the code examples that you can download from the Wrox website. The book shows the source but there is really no way of really matching the example to the source other than guessing the name. Often I've needed to open up all 15 or so files in the directory to realize that the particular example is not included. I'm picking my way through but it is not pleasant.

Not that good for .Net developers
It is a good book as far as explaning what SQL Server has to offer regarding XML capabilities but it should have covered the case studies fully with the .Net Framework. Also, it covers very good the IIS configuration, and how to manage XML Templates, XPath and Schemas. The book has a migration example from ASP to ASP.Net which does not cover ADO.Net. If you want a rich source on how to integrate SQLXML and the .Net Framework THIS IS NOT THE BOOK.

No other book covers SQL XML features like this one does
I looked at two other SQL Server 2000 XML books, but found this one to be the best - covering almost everything on SQL Server 2000 XML. Very well written, nice examples help understand the technology better. The chapter on Updategrams is very useful. I wanted to learn updategrams and this chapter covers it nicely to get started using them in production.

Touching the sky : the Indian Air Force today

Boring
Unfortunately about all the Indian Air Force can do these days is crash their fighters. Get a real book about the USAF

A Fairly accurate account of IAF
This book gives the right account of Indian Armed Forces high command concept of projecting numbers over quality of armaments.
Majority of Indian Air force and armed forces inventory has below average combat reputation and IAF is known to have very poor training standards for its pilots. IAF is known for the practice of acquiring equipment without thoroughly testing it in its own climatic conditions, hence has very high loss rate among the airforces of the world.

A must have
This is great coffee table book. A must for anyone who is interested in the IAF.

Good for beginners - REAL Beginners...
Having been into robotics and electronics for several years, this book really didn't hold my interest long...

However, it does show some good ideas on construction techniques. Occasionally the grammer and spelling could be improved. Also, it has a pretty good synopsis on balancing, and walking techniques.

Although, I personally didn't get much from it - I don't feel like I've wasted my money. Like I have with other books...

Good step-by-step introduction
Takes you step-by-step through the basics of motion control and building a moving robot. A good primer if you are interested in the subject but are starting from zero knowledge. You will need basic model-building skills and persistence to complete the project, but you should know a lot more at the end.

Knowledge@Wharton is great, but this book is shallow!
If you're impressed with platitudes, by all means read this book. It's amazing how obvious some of the recommendations are. "Target profitable customers, and avoid unprofitable ones." "Form a consistent corporate strategy, and stick to it -- until, of course, the time comes to abandon it, and then abandon it." Wow. Deep stuff.

If the authors had spent more time explaining how to know when to change strategies, rather than focusing on hindsight, this book could have been powerful. It's a shame, really. Singh and Clemons have published much deeper research in strategy and MIS journals. Knowledge@Wharton is free to subscribe to, and quite interesting, but there's no need to pay for two-year-old stuff.

Excellent reading!
This is one of the best book on information-based strategies. Book does an excellent job in brining new and old economy together.

not recommended
I bought this book for my trip to Kenya Uganda and Tanzania. I thought that I might want to travel to Ethiopia or down to Zambia and Zimbabwe....this guide is much too condensed to be helpful, and most travelers I met hated this guide and would borrow or end up buying the LP East Africa guide. You would be much better off buying a regional guide rather then this monster. Just the weight of the book alone isn't worth carrying around with you. I actually ended up ripping this book to shreads and keeping only about ten pages of it then buying the more in depth East Africa Guide.

Don't get me wrong, I love the lonely planet guides. Just not this one. I can whole heartedly recomment the East Africa guide and the Trekking East Africa guide.

LESS THAN A SHOELACE?
This book, "Africa on a Shoestring, 9th Ed" has a broad coverage; although its chapters are not as detailed as many tourists would expect them to be.
Again, this book would have been of better psychic value, had its authors showed confidence in the sections they dealt with. Its 'information' became a wet blanket for me. Many readers who intend to visit African countries are likey to be discouraged by its relentless pessimistic approach. Its outlook is more critical than 'touristical'. The general impression is this: "something good may not come out of Africa". That is shameful! The term "bush-taxi", which was used over and over again, in lieu of a more cordial 'local-taxi' sounds offensive.
I think that if written (or revised) without assumptive bias, this book would be of better quality and value to its users.

Truly an indispensable tool for all Africa visitors
Africa is large, and it's hard or impossible to concentrate so much information and advice into one book. Yet, Lonely Planet - as always - managed to do this with great muster. Unless you have time and money to buy the many LP guides to single regions and countries of Africa, this is the book you want before you even plan of visiting the black continent !

worst microprocessor book!
Now that I have completed my digital design course and using this required text at San Jose State University (home of the second author), I would like to comment on it.

There are more mistakes in this 3rd edition than in the 2nd edition. Because of the errors, I found it hard to learn for two reasons. Either I've made the mistake (granted the book is correct), or that the authors and editors failed to do their jobs so I have to seek outside help. Even the solutions in the back of the book has obvious errors! I don't believe learning from and paying [this kind of money] for this book is fair to any customer! SJSU students have used the 2nd and 3rd editions as REQUIRED text and paid dearly. (I don't believe that students should be FORCED to buy a book because it is written by a faculty member, especially one this bad! )

Suggestions and recommendations to the authors to correct blatant errors and make improvements were not implemented by the 3rd edition. How can a book create errors from one edition to another? Let me give one simple example. Figure 10-13 on page 470 has the input and output configurations for the 8255 reversed in the 3r edition BUT is correct in the 2nd edition. I also believe a spelling checker was not used as there are typos throughout the book.

Granted there are new materials in the latter part of the book, the older core part of the book should be error-free by the third edition. It has been an extreme headache to study from this book. It has been frustrating, to say the least. To those who wish to waste their money and time, please buy this book. There are other texts less costly and probably better written. The authors need to be more proactive in producing the best possible product when their reputation is on the byline!

An essential book for basic ic knowledge
this book has been very useful in learning the basic concepts involved in the creation of a microprocessor.it has been presented in a way understandable by stdents coming from non-computing backgrounds

Very Interesting and organized
I am taking this class at FDU (where Professor Triebel is teaching this class) and I find that its a very organized text.

there may be a few errors here and there, but it also helps to simply ask the Author for help regarding any possible errors.

Professor Triebel retired from Intel and has intimate knowledge of the 8088/8086 core (as well as the new Itanium) so he's more than qualified in this field.

We are also taking the lab to accompany this class (there's a separate lab manual) and that pretty much bridges the gap between theory and practical applications. The reason being that you can learn the theory behind the instructions in the lecture, but the lab allows you to see the instructions in action.
