Chi Kung: Health & Martial Arts
Published in Audio Cassette by YMAA Publications (1997)
Authors: Jwing-Ming Yang, Yang Jwing-Ming, and Guy Peartree
Amazon base price: $15.95
Average review score:

EXCELLENT guide to beginning chi kung
Although this is not a large book, it is an excellent introduction to the practice of chi kung. It gives you a background of Chinese internal martial arts, buddhism, taoism, Shaolin temple and wudan mountain and then moves into the specific practice of chi kung. Jwing-Ming gives you advice on when and where to practice, breathing techniques, and specific exercises. This is all supplemented with drawings and pictures which are fairly easy to follow.

Also included in the book are chapters on Chi Kung and Health- which includes acupuncture and massage, and a chapter on martial applications which covers cavity presses and briefly iron shirt chi kung.

This is a GREAT book on chi kung, especially for those unfamiliar with it, it may not be helpful for the expert- although it has other material which might be.

it is very excellent for chemistry student
Altough it is an old book it is akin to the new kind of literature " science in fiction " not science fiction. it is exciting reading this book and you learn a lot of thing about chromatography when you are reading this novel like book so it is not boring, I recommend this book as an introduction book for chromatography lectures. You really wonder what will do at the end of the book.. I strongly recommend to all chemists.

Coconuts: Production, Processing, Products

Extensive and relevant coconut processing information
This book has a great value, because it explains in a very extensive manner all the main uses of the coconut. Besides it gives a really good description of the machinery needed for coconut processing in case of wanting to start a business based in a coconut product. The references given in this book are really good. The disadvantage, is that it was edited in the 70's, but still gives really relevant information. This book helped me a lot while doing research for a business project about a coconut product.

Coexisting Contemporary Civilizations: Arabo-Muslim, Bharati, Chinese and Western

The Partnership of Civilizations
In this agitated time of Arab resentment raising its head and of the ensuing American riposte, this book goes to the heart of the matter : the global failure of communication between civilizations.
After defining the several civilizations on the present scene by their anthropological, economic and scriptural building blocks, Dr Ankerl goes on to show how the West, in particular the Anglo-Saxon West, has systematically tried to infiltrate other civilizations and has denied them partnership status. "West is West and East is not."
The book ends with a call to a world-wide forum of the present day civilizations in order not only to preserve their identity but also to further global equitability, the only remedy in the end against the many forms of local violence our generation is witnessing.
I feel that Dr Ankerl, who is an internationally known and respected sociologist, offers the reader one of the best books on the subject of global communication. Its conceptual framework and degree of informativeness are impressing.

Computational Chemistry (Oxford Chemistry Primers ; 29)
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (1995)
Authors: Guy H. Grant and W. G. Richards
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

A concise introduction to Comp. Chem.
This small booklet is an excellent introduction to computational chemistry for the novice. Provides an easy to read, description of the field, its methods, applications and utilization. Covers everything: 'ab initio' quantum mechanics, molecular mechanics and dynamics, modelling of biological macromolecules with a short introduction to sequence analysis, QSAR and computational pharmacology.
While it won't provide an in-depth view of the methods, it manages to convey enough detail to understand the basics. A must have for anyone desiring to enter the exciting field of Molecular Modelling.

Configuration Management for Software (Vnr Computer Library)
Published in Paperback by Van Nostrand Reinhold (1994)
Authors: Stephen B. Compton, Joan R. Callahan, and Guy Conner
Amazon base price: $41.95

Simply the best and worth the effort to track down
Of all of the SCM books on my shelf this one is the best. The writing is engaging because the authors narrate their own experiences while imparting a copious amount of technical information and guidance on SCM. They use wry humor and case studies to reinforce their detailed description of the technical underpinnings and processes required to implement and manage SCM.

The first five chapters lay the foundation. Chapter 1 is introductory and provides the basic concepts. Chapter 2 covers the major SCM activities in detail, and addresses both technical and managerial considerations. Role and responsibilities of the software configuration manager is the topic of chapter 3. Forms, records and other essential SCM tools are covered in depth in chapter 4, with chapter 5 giving a wide survey of existing standards and procedures. The standards covered are primarily from the Federal Government and IEEE; however, the case studies in this chapter also include ISO 9000.

Chapters 6 through 8 cover how to implement and manage SCM. The chapter I liked most in this group is 8, Adapting to the Organization. The information will show you how to tailor SCM to fit within your particular organization and how to integrate it into your development processes. Chapter 9 is an extended case study of how SCM was used in the Space Station Freedom project. This chapter is a gold mine of best practices, as well as a dissertation of the challenges of applying SCM to a complex project. Chapter 10 reinforces chapters 8 and 9 by providing a conceptual framework for SCM, which contains some of the best case studies in the book.

Although this book is out of print there is a way to purchase used books. This one pops up from time to time as available - the next time it does I strongly recommend that you grab a copy if you are serious about SCM. This is a 5 star book and the best one among the dozen I own on the subject.

Blurb from Richard Hell
"It cannot be said too often and it's never said enough that the mass news-media have low-to-no standards of accuracy, whether in relatively minor or peripheral areas of their reporting where their interests may not be obviously at stake (except in that it's in their interest not to go to the expense of bothering to check facts, and to conceal this) or in the larger matters where their prejudices are more apparent. And, as the media leaders know, since almost all news becomes "old" the moment it's broadcast, most victims of their misrepresentations are at a disadvantage not only because of a power mismatch, but because a protester looks like a fool to be challenging yesterday's papers. But the consequences of the media's irresponsibility and maliciousness are real to their victims. Guy Debord finally had to react. A rare and nice touch is where he mentions that he actually has no higher opinion of the consumers of the media than he does of the disseminators of it. Heh heh.

The tract is full of these sudden sharp insights into Debord. It's great as well for its evocation of the whole intense time and place (Paris art/life radicalism, 1957-84)."
