Babouk (Voices of Resistance)

A Cold Indictment of Slavery
In BABOUK, Guy Endore continues along the same artistic heights he hit the previous year with THE WEREWOLF OF PARIS, this time turning his attention to the Haitian slave trade and the brutality of Western civilization. In reading this, it's no surprise that it was a commercial catastrophe for Vanguard Press in 1934, especially since the original jacket contained the paratextual blurb "From The Author Of THE WEREWOLF OF PARIS", obviously desperate at marketing the controversial content by associating it with the former success. The story is told from the perspective of a young slave, Babouk, and, as always, Endore does an extensive amount of research on his subject matter. This new Voices of Resistance edition (the first since '34) is excellent, with an outstanding preface and postface that place both the text and the revolution into a historical context for the reader unfamiliar with Haiti's struggle for freedom. The typeface has improved (Endore consented to having the original plates melted down to aid the war effort) and the overall design is far superior. The material is disturbing and for good reason. I highly recommend this work, not only because Endore is a brilliant storyteller, but because he relentlessly attacks Western patterns of domination and oppression at a time in history when it was incredibly unpopular to do so. The author, in a 1963 inscription, once wrote accurately: "BABOUK is my unknown masterpiece. At any rate, unknown."

Ballad of the Flim-Flam Man

Thoroughly Enjoyable Piece of Americana
This is a wonderful little time capsule. Originally published in 1965, the story of Mordecai Jones, also known as "the flim-flam man," and Curley Treadway is an episodic tale filled with the local color of eastern North Carolina 40 years ago. Back then, the eastern part of the state was a rural poor man's land without speedy highways, dependent upon tobacco for its economy. This episodic tale recounts the adventures of young Curley who went AWOL from the military and meets up with Mr. Jones as he is thrown from a train. Being the obliging sort, Curley pulls Jones' head out of a puddle, saving his life, and thus sets up the friendship that creates havoc throughout the eastern part of the state. The cons they pull off are all great fun from selling punchboards, gambling, stealing chickens, playing guitar, and even substituting for the revival minister when it's time to pass the hat. They steal a truck full of liquor from moonshiner Dooley, and proceed to drive that truck all over the East dispensing good spirits wherever they go. Near the end, Curley crashes the truck right into a church, appropriately enough, setting up the final climax of the book. Like all good partnerships, this one is tested by the love of a pretty girl, Miss Bonnie Lee, who takes Curley's heart faster than you can say "jackrabbit." Some of the language remembers the old South as blacks are referred to as "coloreds." Given the time frame, it seems to fit, despite how it might currently be received. Owen certainly knows his local references and gives the flavor of this area. It's good fun, a pretty quick read. Seek & enjoy!

twinken made my daughter twinkle with laughter
Since my daughter saw the movie "Barney's Great Adventure" she could talk of nothing else but this new Barney character named Twinken. He is cute and cuddley and made her 2 year old heart twinkle with love. Twinken is not so easy to find, so when I found this book, she was so surprised to see it. When my friends saw it they immediatley wanted the same book. It was great being able to find it here .... The book has great colorful pictures and an cute storyline that my daughter was able to follow along with. She reads it everyday!

Night, Night Barney - light up moon
This is my child's first Barney book, although she has enjoyed the show. I chose this book because she loves to look up into the night sky and say, "MOON!". She started saying "night, night" the second night we read this book. At twenty months the narrative is a bit abstract, but uplifting and she will listen to it. Of course at her age she enjoys naming the pictures and pushing the button to make the moon light up. This even helps with fine motor skills - the button is small and requires steady pressure to keep the light on. The moon is neat because when it is not lit, the face has a closed mouth smile, and when it is on, the moon has an open mouth smile. She noticed the difference right away. This is a terrific book to read right before bed. It mentions some of procedures of getting ready for bed and shows hugs and sleeping children. If your child likes Barney, pushing buttons and has a before-bed reading routine, this book is a must-have! Please see my members page for more book selections!

Barney's Rainbow
My son and I love reading Barney's Rainbow book. The book has colorful, bright, fun pictures with a cute story about a red bird. It has a few cut-outs that children can touch and it goes through all the colors of the rainbow. The book is larger than standard, so it is easy for my son to carry, hold and turn the pages. My 18 month old brings me this book to read to him many, many times a day. Enjoy!

A Must Have!!
We bought this set for our 16 month old son. He has had these books now for two months and read them every single day. He brings me the book and wants to point out all of the objects that he has learned from them. He brings me the book at least three times a day!! The pictures are brightly colores and fun to look at. Some of the objects to find are small, but after a few times, my son found them! I am buying another set for my nephew.
