Be aware, however, that Odom pulls no punches, and is refreshingly clear in the light of political correctness. I will not give away the full gist of his argument, but strongly encourage anyone who considers themselves literate and educated to read this book. Ideally, the topics within the book could become the enlightened basis for the development not only of the family but of democracy as well.

This is the most spectacular book I have found in coffee table editions. The black and white photographs are captivating! Many of them are two-page spreads. The photographer, Guy Le Querrec, is said "to have the eye of a tragedian." The Big Foot Memorial Ride is called "the symbol of the Indian [eradication]." This book covers the 100th anniversary Big Foot Memorial Ride, which took place from Saturday, 15 December, 1990 to Saturday, 29 December, 1990.
In 1890, just after Sitting Bull was assassinated, Chief Spotted Elk, nicknamed Big Foot, was called an "Indian agitator" by the government. A warrant was issued for his arrest by the government. Big Foot knew he could not protect his band, which consisted mostly of elderly, women, and children. He was seventy years old and being riddled by pneumonia. He planned to take his band to Pine Ridge and seek the help of Chief Red cloud.
Many members of the band were barefoot and all were starving. Only two had rifles. On 17 December 1890, the band began the trip of more than 260 miles through the snow. On 29 December, soldiers of the Seventh Cavalry surrounded their camp. These men opened fire with the new Hotchkiss machine guns. They slaughtered roughly 350 Native Americans, plus an "accidental forty-five soldiers, and then calmly rode away to wait out the blizzard before sending a detachment back to bury the Indians in mass trench graves.
On 1 January 1891, photographer George Trager recorded the incident. His photographs are included in this book. The book of Big Foot lying dead in the snow has been widely published and is the photograph most commonly associated with the government's ...eradication of Native Americans.
Only four men and forty-seven women and children survived. Survivors of the massacre said that the seventh generation following the massacre would restore unity to the Sioux people. That generation is being born today. The children of today will become the unifying generation!
The government rewarded the actions of the soldiers by awarding thirty-five nedals for actions during "the battle."
Each year for five years, the Sioux gathered for a memorial ride, with the biggest ride being planned for the 100th anniversary of the massacre. This was supposed to be the final ride, with the Big Foot band being buried in the Wounded Knee cemetery at the completion of the ride. Renowned French photographer, Guy Le Querrec accompanied them on this ride and documented the activities from the planning to the following celebrations.
This book is so much more than simply a collection of photographs and writing. It is a memorial for a band of people, a memorial for the Native American culture, and testament to the Native American spirit. It is a critically important documentation of a historical event. But, more important than anything else, it is, according to Jim Harrison, a book that "will start a fire in your brain that will last forever, assuming you are a true human being."
How could I ever add anything to that final statement? See for yourself!
