EXCELLENT BOOK!!!
NO PERSON HAD MORE POWER OVER HIS PEOPLE NEXT TO HITLER THAN JIM JONES!!!THE AMERICAN HITLER!!THE AUTHORS TRACE THE CHILD HOOD OF THIS BRILLIANT BUT MAD MAN AND COVER THE RISING OF THE PEOPLE TEMPLE AND THE TRAGIC ENDING!!! A MUST READ!!!

For an exceptional and POWERFUL read...
...and one that is written from the inside out I would also suggest SEDUCTIVE POISON by Deborah Layton. It has received incredible reviews both on-line and in print. It is a insider's riveting accountof how and why people were caught up in this humanitarian organization. JimJones was a well respected politician and Reverend in teh early 70's and many young Vietnam protesting rebels joined him. What had seemed like a Humanitarian organization soon turned darker and 900 of his more than 3,000 members found themselves isolated in a jungle and suddenly unable to leave. VERY POWERFUL!

The Suicide Cult The Inside Story of the People's Temple Sec
This book was one of a kind regarding the many books I have read covering the Jonestown massacres. It kept me on the edge of my seat and I was unable to put it down. I felt as if I were there the authors did such a vivid job covering those horrible days leading to the final holocaust over in Guyana. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who would like a fact based view of those final days over there.

Incredible Work
Having marveled at the tapestry I purchased from Simply Tapestries, I went to the Museum of Modern Art to see their recent exhibit of Flemish tapestries. This book can almost act as a companion of this exhibit. I am amazed at the quality and quantity of the full color artwork. This book is a must for anyone who has purchased or intends to purchase a tapestry. The authors are obvious experts in their field. A wonderful art book of the highest quality. I learned so much about the history of these wonderful pieces of art.

Truly magnificient!
I had no idea how important a medium tapestry was prior to stumbling on the Met exhibition during a recent visit to NYC and then reading this book. I was amazed to learn the amount of money spent to produce (and purchase!) them, and how important the industry was to the economy of the time . Anyone who thinks of tapestries as beige, boring and historically insignificant is in for a surprise.

As for this book itself, the photography is stunning and lavish. Each time you look at one of these magnificent works you see something new--it's hard to believe that these are woven objects, the detail and color is so vivid...no wonder the NY Times listed it as a holiday gift buy. (I think they rated the accompanying exhibition one of the year's best too)

Best collection available
This collection depicting the tapestry exhibit recently held at the NY Met Museum is an indisputable gem. Entries are consise and thorough. Photographs are well done, some a bit too grey, but overall usable to all textile artists.
Well worth the price and a steal at Amazon's price.

One of the best books I've ever owned
My parents bought me this book in hardcover about ten years ago, and it has been indispensible. It covers a broad enough base of information so well, and with enough depth, that it has been a constant and indispensible reference for me through GCSE science in the UK, high school chemistry in the US, and even sometimes during my undergrad chemistry and physics. The illustrations are wonderful, and the explainations lucid. I would definitely recommend this for anyone with a child in school, or anyone who wants to look at a bit of basic science.

Absolutely brilliant.
About 15 years ago, as a 9 year old, I read the three books that make up this Dictionary of Science (the Biology, Physics and Chemistry ones). I was completely captivated by them, and read them over and over again. The science is pitched at exactly the right level for children: the colourful illustrations and short sections retain a child's attention. I went on to take biology, physics and chemistry A-levels at age 17, and went on to study Medicine at Cambridge University in England. Obviously there was more to this achievement than the Usborne books I read as a child, but I honestly do attribute much of my initial interest to them.

This book is excellant, great illustrations!!!!
This book is a wonderful source of science information, the colurful illustrtaions help explain the theorys that are explained in the book. It is a book for all levels. It is not just a dictionary but a true sience resource.

Wonderful hostessing guide and menu formatted cookbook!
The Virginia Hostess is a fabulous guide for anyone! Whether you are an experienced chef or a novice, this cookbook is more than the average collection of recipes. It features themed chapters with beautiful historic sketches from Virginia. Each chapter has complete menus for different occasions, including showers, children's parties, formal dinners, picnics, holiday occasions and more! An educational and comprehensive wine selection section is included. I highly recommend this beautiful and resourceful cookbook and entertaining guide!

A Wonderful Well Rounded Guide To Entertaining
The menus ideas are terrific! I enjoyed all the recipes and was glad to have a cookbook that covers most any occasion. The layout is superb and makes a great bridal or hostess gift. This book has really made my life a lot simpler when I am called to entertain. I own a lot of cookbooks but this one is well worn and used often.

Recipes, menus and other resources!
I've owned this book for a couple of years now, and have reallyused it alot! It has great recipes in it, but in addition, it hasmenu and entertaining suggestions, a list of Virginia wineries, and even ideas for kids' parties. (Who knew how to make face paint?) I also like the fact that it comes from a community service organization, so I know part of my purchase price went to a good cause.

I love it! Finally a cookbook written in "man" language. Nothing complicated about these recipes. Now I can pig out with a pigskin. I hope they do one for my favorite sport...NASCAR.

Fun, Good Food, and great trivia
2 Regular Guys is a primer for those wishing to throw a great party-especially during the football season. Easy, fun and a fresh new idea. A great gift book and the food is really good for ordinary people. Jill Bertolet

Davenport's Greeks
This is a gem of a book for anyone who is interested in ancient Greece. Guy Davenport is a wonderful interpreter of Archilochos, Sappho, and the rest; his introduction, describing each poet is as interesting as the poetry itself. Davenport's explication of how translation of the ancient poets is done is fascinating, and lends integrity to the book. Mr. Davenport tells you when the papyrus he is translating is simply too worn to read (explaining gaps in the verse), but he also speculates about what the original poem might have been, when, for example, the entire left side of a papyrus page is missing. His "wishful thinking" about how a certain poem of Sappho's might have read (if we had the entire text) gives us a better idea why the Greeks and Romans loved her, but Davenport scrupulously identifies what is his "tuckpointing" and what is the actual text. Mr. Davenport's translations of the fragments of Archilochos are particularly powerful to me. He has captured with great sensitivity the thinking of this remarkable soldier-poet who is the second oldest Western poet after Homer. Archilochos' writing brings us a view of war in the sixth century before Christ with a realistic pen, and also a passionate one. This was the poet who could write in one poem of throwing down his shield and running away at the height of the battle ("somehow life seemed more precious"), and in another speak with respect of bravery and defense of home ("remember us, remember this earth when, with hearts against despair, our javelins held Thasos from her enemies"). In all, another fine book from an extraordinary author who range of learning is enormous, and is used to entertain as well as to educate.

Scrupulously accurate, thoroughly modern
This is a little book that will take your breath away. Most of the poets here survive only in tatters, rags of verse and words quoted by other authors. Yet the power that dwells in a handful of scattered words from a great verse is poetry itself, like haiku. Sappho and Archilochos read as though they could have been contemporaries of Ted Hughes. The key here is Davenport, a man of incredible sensibility, and the best bridge-builder between the ancient and the modern since Ezra Pound.

Acts of the Apostles

Acts of the Apostles
In Acts of the Apostles, Manchester's viewpoint on fundies is as accurate as it is entertaining. Having been a fundamentalist for years, I recognized the power-hungry leaders of the church in this book. There's a good bit of satire as well as suspense in this story, which builds to a great ending. I wish fundies would read this and get a view of how their actions look from the other side. And although it seems quite scary, much of this story could happen, and would if the fundies could get by with it. It has been said that "fiction is the lie that tells the TRUTH." This is GREAT FICTION!

Glad I read this book!
As a gay man, this is one frightening book and I'm glad it's just fiction (I hope), because we can't afford to lose the freedom we have in America. Acts of the Apostles had just enough comic relief to allow me to sleep at night. As a child I, too, attended a fundamentalist church, and this book rang true with me. God bless the author.

Americans in Kodachrome 1945-1965

A "Must-Have" picture book for any American!
I have had the great privilege of seeing this project from conceptual stages through it's fruition in the form of this wonderful book and the amazing collection of images assembled by Guy Stricherz therein. Not only have I been able to see many of the original transparencies, themselves, as well as some of the tens of thousands of images from various amateur archives from which these images were brilliantly edited and carefully selected over more than ten years time...But I have also seen the magic of the dye transfer prints themselves, which Guy and his talented wife Irene Malli, have lovingly crafted, and how they have given those images a whole new life and have immortalized them for all time. I state this to assure you up front that I certainly do have some bias in writing this review, as I also have the privilege to be able to call Guy and Irene my dear friends. I state this also because it may offer an interesting perspective of having an inside view of this project, as well as how this book brilliantly succeeds in doing justice to Guy's wonderful concept. Culled from the archives of amateur photographers from across this country, Guy has carefully selected those images that will resonate on many levels, with any American who has lived through the 20th century. Immortalized by the legendary song by Paul Simon of the same title, Kodachrome slide film was used predominately throughout the period from 1945-1965 by almost every American amateur photographer to document the triumphs and tribulations of day-to-day life. The film itself has a particular color palette and vibrancy that speaks of an entire era to anyone even remotely familiar with it (even thought they may not know they are familiar with it). Through the dye transfer process (which is a painstakingly demanding archival color printing process of which Stricherz and Malli remain of the few, and most certainly the finest practicing masters on this planet of that artful craft) Guy and Irene have been able to restore, and subtly transform these images, not simply back to their original splendor, but to a rich and vibrant palette that speaks not only of years gone by, but also to the idea of 'color' as 'content'. The images themselves are sometimes quirky, sometimes quiet, sometimes loud and brash. Each of them succeeds, not only in preserving a unique, often mysterious, document of time and place and people, but also in engaging us to look and see beyond the subject matter. What is amazing is that these images are snapshots, created by moms and dads, aunts, and grandparents, fishing buddies, and friends of all kinds...people just like you and me (well, I'm disqualified I guess as photography is also my profession)! It is credit to Stricherz' brilliant idea, his steadfast belief in the concept, his tremendous patience, devotion and hard work, and mostly to his keen and discriminating eye for what brings magic to a color image, that this collection of images succeeds on so many different levels. These are not ordinary 'snapshots' by any means! Their magic and mystery will move you. It is a tribute to post war America, and to the Americans who created and lived that life, and to those who created these images. It will delight both the non-photographer, the amateur, as well as those more versed with visual arts. I can say from first-hand experience that I was delighted to see that the reproduction in this beautiful volume certainly does justice to the amazing collection of dye transfer prints that Stricherz and Malli have crafted. I've come to expect nothing less from Twin Palms Publishers who published this book and have done many distinctive and remarkable photography books in the past. Congratulations Guy and Irene - you have realized your brilliant vision and have shared it with the world! Congratulations are also due to those individuals across the country who submitted tens of thousands of photographs for this project, both those whose images were selected, as well as those whose images were not, for it was also through their efforts and contribution that made this collection possible! Buy this book! It is destined to be a classic coffee-table photo book that will seldom see shelf-time! If you get an opportunity to see the collection of dye-transfer prints, which will be in a traveling exhibition, do not pass up that opportunity!

A Rich And Rewarding Look At Mid-Twentieth Century Americans
In 1994 or thereabouts I read an article about an exhibition to feature "snapshots" made by ordinary people using Kodachrome slide film. I sent along a 1960 photograph of my mother for review. Unfortunately it was not accepted and returned to me with thanks. Just a few months ago, having all but forgotten about it, I saw this book being advertised. It is now in my collection and I must say, "wow!". It will definately bring back memories for anyone born in the post WW II years and enthrall those who just love photography. The book is beautifully crafted and printed with heavyweight paper stock and a dust cover that folds underneath along the length. Highly recommend.

The best book I've ever read.
I can offer no greater enticement for a book other than that I have given it to all of my friends and "forced" them to read it. It is touching, sentintimental, and at the same time richly funny; all in the same way that real life is. It contains all the wisdom of self combined with that of a best friend, harshly honest and thought provoking. I'm sure everyone will find a great deal of themselves in it. I can't wait until it circulates back to me so that I may read it once again.

THANK YOU, DAVID GUY!
How refreshing and exciting to be able to peek inside a man's mind, heart, and soul for an honest and uncensored look at how he REALLY feels about love, sex, relationships, and desire. I'll read this one again, something I've never done with any other book. I can't help myself -- I've fallen in love with this guy! I'll be looking forward to more from this author

Excellent
Hersey covers it all. This book is incredibly powerful , wonderfully written and offers the reader comfort during a break-up with a Bad Guy which can be very confusing and difficult. On a personal note, this book has become my safe place- and reference point to move on and that has been the greatest gift of all.

Extremely insightful, comforting, and well-written.
Hersey's book is both reassuring to women whohave been on the front lines of "bad boy" relationships, and helpful in explaining why women are drawn to men who, in ways both obvious and subtle, are not good for them. Instead of a lecturing Ph.D. thesis, Bad Guys benefits from being in the voices of real women telling their varied stories, scattered with wise, emphathetic musings from Hersey. Think of it as a non-threatening support-group between two covers. For this reader, it was a life-saver.
