A good guide to beginners in French.
I expected to hear a lot of words in English and its French translation, but what I found was a concise guide to understand and speak French in different everyday situations. A great surprise ! Vocabulary on the cassette is organized in 12 subjects (Feelings, the Weather, Moods / Leisure Time with Friends / Shopping / Health ...) with almost 40 expressions per subject, first spoken in English and later in French by a man or a woman. Sound is good and the English speaker introduces in a pleasant way every group of phrases. Booklet has two parts, one with the cassette transcriptions and the other with some travel tips and more words and sentences (in both parts you will learn more sentences than words) grouped in others 15 subjects (related with the events of a trip) not included in the cassette but with a pronunciation guide. Recommended for those that are planning to travel to a francophone country and has a basic or none knowledge of French.

Luminous
The color reproductions in this book of the frescoes in the Scrovegni (Arena) Chapel in Padua depicting episodes in the life of Christ (and the Virgin Mary) are among the most, if not the most, beautiful I've ever seen. Printed on textured and translucent paper, the effect is to allow them to glow with astonishing freshness. The more enlarged reproductions not only allow one to examine the artist's technique, but to appreciate the full expressiveness of face and form. Very moving.

provides the key to a little-known treasure
This book opens up a midwestern treasure spot that is not well-known to most Americans but deserves to be: the sand dunes and beaches that are around the bottom of Lake Michagan. I lived in that area years ago and this book does a great job telling the story of why the place so special. The history is told and developers' mistakes are not ignored. But mostly the book is about the present and what's there now: good living amidst tremendous beauty.

Nomi's lucky pair
This book represents an excellent experience with a vision exam, culminating with a thorough visit to the dispensary. The heroine, Nomi is a 7 year-od child who is experiencing blurry vision and can't read the blackboard at school. When she squints to see, her siblings make fun of her. The worst embarassment is when she steps on the family cat who studiously avoids her afterward. Her father wears glasses so he knows that a visit to the optometrist is in order. The optometrist hands out his diagnosis: Glasses! Nomi remembers the eighth "good-luck" candle placed on her cake and decides that her glasses must be "good luck" to counteract the "bad luck" blurry vison. Nomi tries on a variety of glasses before settling on a pair. This is a wonderful book for parents to positively present glasses to their chidren before and after an eye appointment.

a serious art book
I'm aware of only one other book, now decades out of print, that does equivalent justice to Goya's stunning, apocalyptic final visions. Even the current big, ritzy Goya monographs can't touch the top-quality reproductions that this book offers, printed as they are on a curious matt paper, thin and oddly textured, but affording an excellent impression of the painterly quality of these impasto nightmares. The author's text and various 'poetic' contributions are B-grade, but not to worry; this is not a book to read but to LOOK AT and be transported by, into a dream that, while exhilarating, one is releived to wake from. Hang the expense! If you love Goya, you must have this startling book.

Every recipe-delectable!
I purchased this at a grocery store when I first was married almost 30 years ago. It is alphabetical by herb or fresh garden vegetable or fruit. Every recipe became surprisingly a favorite. I soon realized that I could depend on these recipes and proceeded to harvest something and know that the recipe was going to bring out the best in the produce. I have moved to northwest Alaska and all my cookbooks are in storage. This is my all time favorite cookbook. I need a greenhouse here to extend the growing season. There are good instructions for growing edibles as well.

Good for Yom Kippur and year round
This book was read during services last week at my mother's synagogue. I immediately asked the rabbi for information, so that I could order my own copy. I know that my daughter will use it when teaching at our religious school, and the book will eventually be given to our children's day school. The story is charming and, while it will captivate little ones, is told well enough to be of interest to those who read it aloud to their children.

Absolutely fantastic.
Absolutely fantastic. This book is packed with ideas i've never thought of. Everything from Vinaigrettes, to stocks, to absolutely mouthwatering desserts. And it's all made with fruits, and chile!

My first attempt, inspired by the small tale about the author's grandparents, was "Mostarda di frutta" on page 39. The only way i can sum it up accurately is "!!!!!!".

I've cooked things for myself. I've cooked stuff for my family. I've entertained friends with it, and it's causing RIOTS!

If you like fruit, and if you like hot food, please please buy a copy of this!

Thanks for making me restock my kitchen, Jaqueline! I'm investing in kilner jars!
