Excellent for intermediate to advanced students
This book cleared up a lot of lingering questions that I had, and does a good job of focussing on and clarifying troublesome topics. It's done in a way that allows for self-study, which is how I used it. One thing I liked about it is that it doesn't try to be cute and amusing like many language textbooks do in order to keep your attention, while often forgetting to include good information. Instead, Ollivier gets right down to the question at hand which is studying grammar and vocab, and the fact that she does it in a thorough and organized way is what kept me involved. She also does it almost entirely in French. The only reason why I might have taken off a star is that I would have liked to have more exercises with corrections, but I believe that most of the exercises are intended as homework assignments for class, and I made do. In short, if you're serious about learning French and aren't put off by explanations about grammar, then this is an excellent book.

Best French grammar book for non-francophone students
Absolutely the best tool for studying French for students who already have some background. Detailed, comprehensive explanations followed by examples. This book made me fluent. Marvelous!

The Great Sophists in Periclean Athens

There's More to the Great Sophists Than Plato Would Allow
"The Great Sophists" by Jacqueline de Romilly is a thorough and first class book on an important but rarely studied aspect of ancient Greek thought: the Sophists.

Ms. de Romilly is a great French classicist with numerous thoughtful publications to her credit of which "The Great Sophists" is the most recent.

The Sophists have historically had an evil reputation as the first cultural and moral relativists; as corruptors of virtue; and for degrading philosophy.

Ms. de Romilly attempts to demonstrate that this view is due to a variety of factors (primarily Plato's laregly negative characterization of them and the dearth of Sophistic texts)which can and should be re-examined.

She attempts to lay out, to the best of the knowledge available to us, exactly what the Sophists teachings actually were; their similarities with many of Socrates views; and why Plato viewed them with hostile but at times ambivalent feelings.

In all of this Ms. de Romilly does a superb job of rooting out every reference to the Sophists in ancient literature as well as their own statements (often from hostile witnesses like Plato). With this awkward mass of material Ms. de Romilly has fashioned a very interesting and useful work that diserves a prominent place in the history of Greek thought. With the notable exception of Kerford's "The Sophistic Movement" it is difficult to recall any modern work other than Ms. de Romilly's that attempts to so thoroughly arrive at what the Sophists actually believed and what their effect was on Greek thought and civilization.

The most important question though is does she finally redeem the Sophists from the charges of amorality and corruption that were assigned to them? Ultimately I do not think believe she can regardless of how neutral a face she puts on her analysis and how much she endeavors to redeem their thought. As with so much ancient literature it is deeply sad that we do not pocess more texts by the sophists themselves. Given that we do not and given what remains, it seems that Plato was entirely in the right to cast them in the evil light that he did. But that is certainly no reason not to buy and learn from this terrific work of scholarship.

Someone review this book!
I haven't read this book but the Sophists fascinate me. How good is this book?

Great book - I Know the Author
I read this book when I was a junior at Cornell College, no relation to the Univ, and Jackie Martin was the Prof. At first I did not like the set up of the book at first, yet when I thought about the wide range of readers this book apeals to I enjoyed it more. The side bars are interesting and would be use full in some cases to the adult -- i.e. teacher, or parent -- yet older children who find this book interesting will want to know more and find them most usefull. Also the basic story line will be interesting to younger children and I have used read it seveal times to the first grade children I tutor in Ohio. It is well written and is a perfect book to read when spring come around or for a group project dealing with spring.

A parable of compassion vs. misery
This tiny tome is in actuality a parable of compassion vs. misery, a story of triumph of life and vitality over common desperation. It is an example of how good work that encompasses the light of the sun and the miracle of the seed supersedes the doldrums of disenfranchised lives. The recipients of the gardens thumb their noses at their personal misfortune and rise to find that beauty and joy are possible. The garden givers have brought them that possibility. It is a sound Emersonian lesson for children. And fun to read.

Half Woman

INSPIRING
This young author explodes onto the scene with this debut novel! Not only is it well-written, but the characters are extremely well-developed. Although I am not of African descent, I could relate to many of the themes in the novel. The book trancends ethnicity -- and gender as well. Nkem is a wonderful character and Ms. Onyejekwe looks to be one of the budding, hot, young Black female writers -- young writers period!

Telling A Universal Story
I am utterly impressed with the quality of Ms. Onyejekwe's work. She has written a story with a very central and universal theme. Although I am not from Nigeria, I can relate to the environment and traditons she narrates so well. I still wonder why many cultures are slow to appreciate the female child - without them, we would have no mothers to raise the world.

This book uses the life of its main characters to tell an emotionally captivating story that crosses over oceans and continents. I recommend it for anyone who believes in freedom.

Hang up your sign...Gone Fishin!
Will Simon Henry catch the legend of Higgins Bend, Oscar, the sneaky catfish? No one ever has...but Simon is determined. Get this book and find out! This great book is brought to you by two of Kansas's finest, author Jackie Briggs Martin and illustrator, Brad Sneed. The story is the perfect length (each page is one or two paragraphs, tops) and the illustrations bring joy and energy to this classic tale of the one that got away...or did he? Your children will ask for this one over and over!

AN ORIGINAL TALL TALE, UPROARIOUSLY TOLD
This book is written to be READ ALOUD! The music of the language, the surprise of unlikely phrases crafted with the liberal use of hyphenation, the authentic voice, and the lively story are everything a tall tale should be! Martin has three irresistible characters here - Simon Henry, Potato Kelly, and Oscar, the uncatchable catfish. Sneed's wildly exaggerated paintings do perfect justice to this joyride of a story!

Great comedy!
I loved the book, "How to Survive Summer Camp". It was original, humorous, and right on the dot with feelings. I love all Jacqueline's books; right now my favourite is "Girls Out Late", which is the 3rd in the "Girls In Love" series for older readers. So, if you love a good book, read this, and all the others. Really! You wont be disappointed.

How Would You Survive As an Ancient Egyptian?
I had to use this book as a report on Ancient Egypt. It had so much information on everything that I needed. It had information on mummies, life, and gods, and more all in this book. If it wasn't for this book I wouldn't be hear with a good grade.

How Would You Survive As An Ancient Egyptian?
As an educator and parent, I found this book to be phenomenol! The kids in my classroom were fascinated by all the details and illustrations that show what it was really like to be an Egyptian on a daily basis. It has a "quiz" at the end of the book that's fun to take to test your skills as to what you learned. This book really takes you back to Egypt and helps you put your own two feet into the real world of Egypt! Superb detail on every subject; housing, foods, typical daily life, women in society, mummification. Just wonderful!
