C for mortals
This is a great beginners book for C programming. All topics are explained with practical examples. As with everything , it requires time and dedication, but the effort will be well worth it. I can't say much that is good at Brooklyn College, but this text is the exception.

BEST BOOK IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE FOR LEARNING C
HI, MY NAME IS RAHEEL ZAMIR. To tell you the truth this is the only book you will ever need to learn the C programming. The author of this Keith Harrow was my professor and ho was like a walking book and you will not find any other professor like him in the entire universe. His book was so easy and clear to read that I finished it in 10 days and I felt that I master the C programming language and actually I did. And the good thing is that I got A in his class. Thanks to Professor Harrow!!!!!!!!! If you want to learn C get this book right now!!!!

Psyche's Story is everyone's story
There are many ways to gauge the value of a book, an important one for me is how well it bears up to being read a second or third time. This book passes that test. It has legs. The myth of Eros and Psyche is the story of our own lives. It illustrates the challenges of loving another, of waking up to our own inner gifts and strengths and claiming them for ourselves and the world. The story shows that the growth of spirit and the opening of the heart will always take place in the school of hard knocks. Throughout the book Jacqueline gives 'seed thoughts' which the reader can begin to incorporate into their day to day lives. The book is blessed by a subtle tone of non-judgement, acceptance, wisdom and humor. Small writes of her own struggles and 'failures' and shows how these events have helped her to take the necessary steps to change that a life of comfort and ease would have denied. There is power in thinking of your own life in mythical terms. Thank you Jacqueline for a wonderful retelling of this old story that has such resonance with my modern everyday life.

Psyche's message relates to us all
Jacquelyn Small outdid herself with this, her latest, book! Starting out with the love story of Psyche and Eros, she translates the myth into every human's story. I was most impressed with the principles of soul psychology that Jacquie expounded upon as universal "seeds" for living a conscious life. The tasks of Psyche have never been this capably and beautifully expressed. She has presented them as being absolutely relevant to us all. This is a book that you will want to refer back to again and again. A definite "must read"!

Essential masterpiece
This enthralling masterpiece by established historian Dr. Jacqueline Eales concentrates on a defining period in English history. Eales focusses on a volatile time with the lead up to the English Civil War and with great depth of understanding brings alive the political, religious and idealogical conflicts of the time. By taking the Harley clan of Brampton Bryan as an example of one family who supported Parliament against the King, Eales skillfully illustrates how courage and belief are lasting virtues in difficult times. Eales' shrewd analysis and confident style is an example to any aspiring writer. Published by Hardinge and Simpole.

brilliant book on the civil war
dr eales is a great authority on this period. this book covers a fascinating period of the civil war in england and it is well up to her usual standard. any one interested in this period of english history should order this masterpiece at once!! it is also a great example of feminism at work in the english 17th century-what a powerful and competent figure brilliana harley must have been.the book is a wonderful tribute to her determination in the face of terrible odds.

Sensitive exploration of a child's saddness and grief
This book tells three separate stories about children's experiences with death. The first tells how a boy deals with the death of his uncle. The second, how students deal with the sudden death of a classmate. The third tells of a girl who is at the bedside with her family when her grandmother dies. Each one deals with the sad feelings surrounding death, but also celebrates the life of the deceased individual. Each story ends with how the children cope and come to terms with loss. Before and after each story are poems that connect death with the celebration of life. These explain that endings and beginnings are all connected. I was particularly impressed with the sensitive way that the author deals with a child's sadness and gently shows ways of coping. She notes that the sadness may never completely go away, but that eventually it is outweighed by understanding and new forms of mastery.

The Saddest Time
The Saddest Time is a great resource to use with children that are dealing with both the potential and eventual loss of someone they care about. There are three short stories in this book. The first one deals with the loss of what appears to be a middle aged uncle, the second the unexpected and accidental death of a young child, and the third the dying and death of an older person, in this case the grandmother. The first story includes the anticipatory grief phase that the child experiences. Trying to make conversation with someone who is terminally ill. It addresses the fear associated with the possibility of losing parents. It also addresses the grief after the death, and attempts to help and comfort the family. The second story is about an accidental death of a classmate. The children in the classroom are given the opportunity to remember and discuss their feelings. They are also encouraged to send the family cards and letters, writing about special times they shared with their friend that died. The third story is about a child's grandmother who is dying and actually dies when the family is present. It discusses the feelings of sadness and anger that the child feels. It further discusses in simple terms, the funeral and the support provided to the grandfather. It also encourages the child to reminisce. Overall, this book really encorporates death as a normal part of life. The emotions experienced because of death are normalized and expected. It addresses feeling experienced. Discusses feelings and common funeral rituals as well as the support that is shared with friends and families after a loss. People, including children experience grief in their own way. This is an excellent book,as it encorporates anticipatory grief as well as the grief experienced after the death of a loved one. It also addresses three different experiences that are common in life. I feel it could help adults and children alike. This book would be great a great resource for the community and should be included in school system, public libraries. We are including this in our hospice library for our community to use.

Sasha's Tail: Lessons From A Life With Cats

very well-written
Well, if you're not a cat person, you won't be interested, but I'd say even the most casual cat person would find this enjoyable. Yes, we've seen it before -- jaunts through the minds of cats and people, tales that relate intelligence and make one wonder what all goes on in the mind of a cat.

Yes, we've seen it before -- but we still enjoy it! Especially when the writing is of as high a quality as it is in this pleasant volume.

Here you'll get to meet the author's cats, especially the fascinating Sasha. The book is very well written (dare I say literary?) and ranges from the cat decision-making process, to the way her cats respond to human voice, to the cat hierarchy.

I especially enjoyed the section where she wrote about the cats raising their tails to express greeting when they neared her, or she called their names. I was really able to picture Sasha's silky, sashaying tail in all its expressiveness.

I enjoyed it

The Secret Letters of Marilyn Monroe and Jacqueline Kennedy: A Novel
Published in Hardcover by Thorndike Pr (Largeprint) (2003)
Author: Wendy Leigh

Average review score:

A Thumping Good Read!
Wendy Leigh has accomplished a truly amazing feat with her most recent book! As a biographer, what better subjects could she find? And, how better could she have revealed the secret nature of two of the most mysterious women in American popular culture?

What could have been a strange fantasy became a living experience for me as I read the letters between Marilyn and Jackie. I kept reminding myself that these letters - though historically and accurately encapsulated in time - were in fact, a work of fiction.

The relationship between Jackie and Marilyn that develops in the course of the book via the age-old epistolary genre is highly plausible - if alarming to consider - and there is no doubt that the evolution of such a relationship could truly have occurred.

Both women come across as needing something from the other that no-one else could provide, and though we know from history that both women were polarities in background, appearance and status, their meeting place was in the relationship bound up with John Kennedy.

This book is a page-turner, it is impossible to put it down because the authenticity of the writing, and the dramatis personae are so realistic, that I "forgot" that this was a work of fiction.

However, by the end of the book, fiction becomes so enmeshed with facts that one is completely bound up in the last few pages, and left thinking - as usual - "what really did happen"?

The emotional denoument is critical to the book - it simply must be read in sequence. Chilling, sad and possibly too too true. . .one is simply compelled to read on. And, "hurrah" to Ms. Leigh for her bravery and creativity to have brought such challenging subjects together in this well researched and brilliantly written book.

A great romantic read
Bought the book in New York before flying back to England this weekend, and read it non-stop during the flight. The moment I finished it, I started it all over again. Because, although it is an extremely easy read, the book - which tells the story of Marilyn's love affair with Jack Kennedy through her letters to Jackie Kennedy - works on so many different levels. Apart from the fact that you really feel that you are reading a true correspondence, this book gives more insight into Marilyn and Jackie than any biography of either of them I've ever read. The letters change from being letters between strangers, to letters between friends, and then, rivals. When I finished the book, I felt as if I had been in another world, another time, and had in the hearts and minds of both Marilyn and Jackie. Before I read the book, as someone who admires Jackie, I was afraid it might be disrespectful of her. But that is not the case. The letters reflect everything I've read about her in biographies - and much more. And made me care about her more than ever. The ending of the book made me cry - it seemed so real, so true, so very sad - and went to the heart of Marilyn and Jackie. As I said before, I am reading it again and can't recommend it enough. Reading The Secret Letters is as addictive as eating Godiva chocolate. Enjoy.

Sister to Sister
Sister Wit by Jacqueline Jakes is one of the most spiritually uplifting devotions for women that I've read. Jakes is the sister of well-known author and speaker Bishop T. D. Jakes. This powerful devotional is Jakes' testimonial. At the request of her brother the idea for this book was born. Jakes shares her unique experiences of life with women. At age twenty Jakes suffered a life-threatening experience. She was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The road to recovery was long and difficult but Jakes held on to her faith for strength and courage.

Sister Wit is an inspiration to all women. Packed with Bible scriptures and quotes from ordinary people this book delivers positive messages. The devotionals are Jakes' secrets about her unique life experiences and the wisdom she gained. In one devotional she writes about "My Missed Opportunity." Shirley Caesar writes the quote that goes with the devotional. "I always had only one prayer: "Lord just crack the door a little and I'll kick it open all the way."

I found Sister Wit to be so real. The book was not preachy but inspirational and thought provoking. I recommend this book to all women who face everyday life struggles...

A Book for Everyone!
SISTER WIT, is insightful, touching, and real! This book is not just for women but for everyone who faces everyday life issues.
Not only are the quotes of infamous people uplifting, but the biblical verses sighted are great references. I give the book 5 stars for it's lovingly spirtitual guidance, it's realism, and wealth of hope!!!

Powerful and entertaining!
I love this book so much that after reading it years ago, I still want to read it again because it's so entertaining with an astrological and psychic twist. I have been studying astrology for years and have never read a book that brings people together by matching their decans!

Sassy, Light and Fun
For those of you that are intrigued by your zodiac sign, but don't want to wade through pages of boring charts--this book is for you. It takes a more lighthearted approach to your "sign" but also gives it an interesting twist. I loved this book! In fact every copy of the book I have bought has been borrowed (a.k.a. stolen) by friends who just can't seem to remember to return it. Sly's mom certainly knows how to entertain you!

A Great Read
I found myself reading this book through in two sittings. If you like history, personal stories, diaries or the like, you will enjoy this book. I compare it to Jimmy Carter's An Hour Before Daylight in that it gives a picture of rural life in the early part of the century. It is human, candid, and lean in its verbage. It captures all of the emotions and leaves you with mental images that will last a lifetime. Try it.

A window into a world gone by
In an era of urban sprawl and corporate farming, this is a gentle reminder of a world of small towns and kind people. Jackie's experiences growing up on the dairy farm range from laugh-out-loud humorous to tears rolling. "The Round Barn" illustrates what family values truly were before the demogogues got hold of the term: integrity, caring and principles put before profit. The Dougans were--and are--intelligent, hard-working people who have a tremendous joy in living.

The stories are brief enough to read aloud---and deep enough to read again and again with pleasure.
