Medical Murder/Mystery Thriller
I was fortunate enough to be able to read the Advanced Reader Copy of this book and I have already placed an order for multiple books to share with my friends and associates.

The author happens to be my younger brother. I know that he's an accomplished ER doctor and that he has been an avid reader over the years. Now, he's woven his experiences and knowledge into a storyline that's well written, intriguing and full of suspense.

With sibling rivalry what it is, you know I'd tell you if this book wasn't worth the read.

To the contrary, I'm already eager to read his next work.

If you like a 'real life' flavor to your mysteries, this is a great book to add to your collection.

Way to go, Bro!

Lower Depths
Published in Paperback by Duckworth (1993)
Authors: Maxim Gorky and Ed. by Kurt Klein

The Truth Behind "The Lower Depths"
The central theme of "The Lower Depths" is not only the total aniquilation of human personality by misery,in the harsh struggle for life that,so many times takes Men to degrade themselves but also,a statement that that aniquilation never is complete and that the very "Ex-Men",like in another book Gorki will call them, still have a conscience, the dream to overcome misery itself,a human warmth capable of being shared and ease.

A Must-read!

good Russian play
In a crowded dark room live the dregs of Russian society: a thief, a prostitute, her pimp, and several other criminals and outcasts. The general humdrum drama of their lives goes on as they get into fights, have disagreements, counsel one another over their losses, and so on.

Luka, an idealistic spiritual sort, finds his way into the group, and starts to spread his message of hope and positive thinking. This spurs the plot along a bit, because many in the group are hard-bitten realists who have no truck with faith or hope.

This is a fine play by Maxim Gorky. Gorky doesn't have the number of famous plays that someone like Henrik Ibsen or George Bernard Shaw does. In fact, he might be better known for his memoir of his childhood than for this play.

Nevertheless, The Lower Depths is a great play. The gritty element described in the play makes it seem much more like a modern play than the 1902 publication date would indicate. The realistic dialogue and streetwise characters make it hard to put down.

The perfect book to take into the john with you...
Kurt Eisenlohr has that special gift that allows him to juggle tragedy & comedy into an excruciating hokeypokey that frequently makes the reader whince and laugh out loud in the same sentence. Meat Won't Pay My Light Bill is an extremely readable book that effortlessly combines the brain of Jean Paul Sartre with the body of Charo. If you like Charles Bukowski, Eight Star whiskey and have ever lost a part of your body to a machine- this is the book for you.

A Great Story
Kurt Eisenlohr, a first-time author from Portland, Oregon, takes an old premise: A broken-hearted guy trying to win back his girlfriend, and really invents something fresh and funny. His character's loopy thoughts and hilarious antics are always heartfelt, though sometimes misguided. The massive amounts of drinking adds a slapstick element to their actions and the dialogue is amazingly accurate.

The Definitive Music Notation text (well worth hunting down)
There are in exisstence a number of useful music notation texts. For quick reference, there is Tom gerou's 'Essential Dictionary of Music Notation'. For an in-depth examination of engraving conventions, there is Ted Ross's 'The Art of Music Engraving & Processing' (includes a history of the processes involved), and a number of titles by Gardner Read. But for all-round comprehensiveness (especially pertaining to contemporary music notation practice), Kurt Stone's book is without a shadow of a doubt the one to get. Every composer should have this book. Incidentally, the book is out of print, but if you can't get it here, you will definitely be able to get it and the other titles mentioned at NPCimaging dot com. (Oops, don't think I'm supposed to do that!)

A must have for a music engraver--too bad it's out of print
This book is very useful for the professional music engraver. It covers many topics that "traditional" engraving texts tend not to cover as far as 20th Century engraving practices are concerned.

Best book on mutual funds I have read.

Naming the Mind : How Psychology Found Its Language

Psychology beginning to understand the words it uses
Surely one of the most critical aspects of our ability to understand the human mind is to understand the words that we use to describe it.

Traditionally psychology has done a magnificent job of turning reasonably functioning human beings into research subjects and patients but has had little inclination to lay on the couch and try to understand itself. The discipline has sailed along, blown by the reassuring wind that it is a pure science, disembodied, transcendent, and insulated from the confusing realities of people and the words they use to communicate.

This book is a masterful account of the history of the words central to psychology, words such as "behavior," "motivation" and "emotion." We use these words as though they are objective categories of brain function, however Danziger explains that they are products of academic fashion and pop psychology and as such they are ever-changing.

This book is clearly written, scholarly but not weighty. It covers an aspect of psychology that is not mainstream - nonetheless it is a seminal book because it is written by an insider and adds momentum to the revolution in thinking that is overturning the prevailing dogma that the brain works like a computer manipulating symbols. The brain is instead an emergent system and words are created through social interaction - therefore words and their meanings are ever-living and not scientifically "pure."

This book confirms that you can understand psychology only be understanding the words that psychologists themselves use.

Cleaning up in Psychology
This is a critical book about the development of psychology. It is not a pink description of a development from primitive thinking to present glory, as most books on the subject are. It is almost the opposite. It can be compared with Stephen Jay Gould's "The Mismeasure of Man" because it is very critical of main-stream psychology's view of man, its methodology, language and so on. (In an earlier book from 1990 he described the statistical methods in psychology as "methodolatry"). There is no doubt that Danziger is an authority in the history of psychology, and his researchs has influenced many books in this field. The basic idea in the present book is that the language of psychology developed as a soft kind of behaviorism using dependent and independent variables. From a broader variety of approaches, this "variable psychology" came to dominate international psychology almost totally, and only in the 1990's signs of weakenings in this hegemonistic approach seems to appear. The development of this dominant approach in psychology is explained from using a kind of social-constructivistic methodology. Psychology developed the way it did because psychologist allied themselves with school administrators, the Army, and similar groups. A psychology serving the students, the mental health patients, and other (end)users would have looked very differently. This book deserves to be read and discussed widely. I myself have used it in a paper about "the classification of psychology" in the journal Knowledge Organization, 1998, 25(4), 162-201.

A powerful, useful book to get free
This book is written by one of the pioneers in this modern age helping people get free of demonic bondage only through Christ.
Very effective, useful information building on the theme of faith in and reliance on Christ being the only way of freedom out of bondage to demons.
His tone is compassionate and he writes concisely and powerfully and his exhortations have helped me to stay free, after being delivered by Christ from many kinds of occult bondage.
He teaches that even Christians can have problems with demons due to any involvement, knowing or unknowingly, in the occult.

A must for those in deliverance ministry
This is an essential book of discernment and training. One must learn the difference between mental illness and possesion. Too many mistakes have been and coninue to be made in this area due to untrained individuls. Get this book, if you are walking in this realm of spritual bondage.

Enter the Garden, If You Dare.....
"Once upon a garden rotten,/Twice forlorn and half forgotten..." So begins Kurt Cyrus' marvelous collection of "a bug's garden of verses." As winter ends and spring blooms, all the creatures begin to wake up and come to the surface. Join aphids, bees, crickets, dung beetles, earwigs, and fleas, grubs, katydids, snakes, snails, frogs, stinkbugs, and many other creepy, crawly, slimy friends as they eat, work, and play. The seasons change and spring turns to summer, and then summer turns to autumn, when "Drip-drip-wet and muddy./Party's over, everybody." Mr Cyrus' exuberant and entertaining text is full of energy and motion, and wonderfully enhanced by his bold, vibrant and engaging artwork. These illustrations are a real feast for the eyes, and youngsters will enjoy poring over the pictures, and always finding something new and humorous each time they open the book. Perfect for little entomologists aged 6-10, Oddhopper Opera is a very creative and innovative look at the garden, and all who live there.

Delightful ANT-ics!
If you love children's poetry, or bugs, or snails, or frogs, or gardens, or humor, or fabulous art, you will enjoy this book. :-) Cyrus is not only a talented illustrator, but this book proves he is also a gifted writer. Here is part of the beginning:

Once upon a garden rotten, Twice forlorn and half forgotten...

Drip--drip--cold and wet. Winter isn't over yet.

Drip--drip--soaking, sopping, Always dripping, never stopping.

This is just beginning of the many rhythmic, funny, surprises crawling inside. A must see-- A must read-- A must own! Enjoy!
