A must-have anthology
This collection of stories leaves you with the feeling of having read a fine novel. It develops through a thematic and narrative arc to a satisfying conclusion--the complete antithesis of many theme anthologies, which are just a miscellaneous hodgepodge of vaguely related stories. I don't know how the editor managed to build such a coherent whole without giving story assignments--this was a completely open market during the reading period--but he did a masterly job. Individually, the stories are well written, often moving, and great fun to read. I loved it!

A thorough and descriptive guide that is worth every penny!
This book is a great guide for visiting the most popular national parks in the United States. It provides extensive information on parks such as Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Great Smoky Mountains, Olympic, Yosemite and Zion. Repanshek details the pros and cons of each park with candor with helpful comments about what to expect from the weather, wildlife and crowds.

Each chapter focuses on a different park. Within each chapter, he covers such topics as: geology, attractions, directions, fees, safety precautions, hikes, ranger programs, lodging, dining options, and other essentials such as post offices, lost and founds, etc. He writes in the first person, and often makes amusing commentaries about his own experiences and expectations. He does a thorough job covering each park - one can sense from reading that not only has he personally visited these places, but that he has returned to each a number of times and writes with the experience that is so valuable to those on a limited time schedule. He acknowledges that while each park could be a vacation of its own, many people can only spend a day or two at each place. To accomodate such travelers, he includes a section in each chapter on what to do if you only have one day to explore the park. This can be an incredibly useful tool if you are on a tight time schedule.

Frequently in travel guides, one gets the sense that the author is either an avid outdoorsman bent on roughing it, or a once-a-year vacationer who would rather die than sleep in a tent. Not so here - Repanshek clearly addresses both groups. He details all the available campsites in a park, along with his opinions on how clean/quiet/developed each site is; but also lists hotels and motels in the surrounding areas, ranging from the cheapest to the swankiest of lodgings. Same goes for the dining options. I personally appreciated this a great deal - my trip was primarily a camping excursion, but every once in a while we decided to splurge on decent hotels and were grateful for his frankness in describing what we could expect for our money.

My only gripe with this book is that it only covers 15 parks. Of course, due to its level of detail, it would be difficult to cover more. My hope is that Kurt Repanshek considers putting together two or more separate guides, for the Eastern and Western National Parks. He has a great eye for detail and leaves no stones unturned in his comprehensive tour of the American parks. I highly recommend this guide!

American Record Labels & Companies: An Encyclopedia (1891-1943)

A valuable resource for the 78 rpm record collector
I've collected 78 rpm phonograph records for some time, and was delighted to hear of the publication of this book. Sutton and Nauck provide detailed histories of virtually every American record label prior to 1943 from Acme to Zon-O-Phone, giving dates of manufature, the companies that marketed them, and offering all sorts of interesting trivia along the way about the early years of the recording industy. The first half of the book covers the actual label names and is presented alphabetically. The second half tells the histories of the companies that made and produced these records. I have found many uses for the book, from getting approximate dates for records in my collection not found in most discographies to answering questions about exact playback speed of certian early disc records, to anything else I'd ever want to know.

Th book comes with a CD-ROM filled with scanned images of the labels discussed in the book. My only gripe with the CD is that it is not very user-friendly towards those of us using Macintosh computers. I can access the images with a photo viewer on my Mac, but file names that do not display properly on a Mac make it difficult to find what I'm looking for.

Anyone who collects 78 rpm records and has an interest in the "behind-the-scenes" workings of the early record industry should have this book. It's a work I find myself referring to frequently to answer my questions about the records in my collection.

Bald Men Never Have a Bad Hair Day: Wit and Wisdom for Men on the Bald Path

love comes out on top
This book happily discredits the Samsom myth. It 1s really not all about the hair or lack thereof, but about managing who we are, living our dreams, sharing our gifts and giving our love.

Dave Beswick's humor, wit and wisdom goes a long way toward shaping baldness into beauty. If you are looking for the power and passion of baldness, look no further! It is all here in Dave's book, one that says we are the best and means it.

If you are even mildly contemplating putting out big bucks for a transplant, toupee or hair restoring medication, I heartily recommend that you read this book and Bald Men Always Come Out On Top before making the investment.

What 1s truly important, says the author, is not the quantity of hair we have, but the quality of love we are able to give and receive. What is really important exists inside the heart and not on top of the head. This is a five star message which I applaud.

Amazing collection of western photography
Truly a stunning collection of western photography. This massive size book offers an important visual slice of Americana. Many collectors have been known to cut out the photos in this book for individual framing (of course some "old school" book collector's would call that sacrilegious). Overall, a wonderfull collection of photographs.

Wow!
When I first got this book, I was amazed at all the information in it. It was very helpful to me. I expected something worst, but it is really good. It has lots of pictures and details in it. The author takes you from the beggining of the computer to the end. If you need details and pictures to help you understand what is going on, this is the book. Experienced or not, this is helpfull for all. Everyone should use this book if they want to get their A+ certification with out any confusion of questions.

My book
I am the author of this book, so understandably I will be biased. The poetry in this book has all been published in magazines and journals around the world. I was inspired to write poetry from my childhood, and encouraged by teachers and friends. While an undergraduate, I met many poets established and aspiring who encouraged me to continue my writing, regardless of whether or not it was ever published. I had one book published in 1986, and am pleased to have another collection available today.

Much of my poetry in this book is derivative of more established styles. In my latest writing, I have begun to try to develop an independent style, but this collection consists of poetry from the 1980s and early 1990s. These poems and others appeared on the Themestream website -- this collection consists of that subset that seemed to generate the most commentary.

You will find echoes of e.e. cummings and Robert Frost in here; you will find structured poems such as sonnets and others edging more toward the concrete poetry movement. Some deal with feelings, some with impressions, and some combine the two.

I've tried to write poetry for everyone, not necessarily for literary types. Perhaps it is unfortunate that poetry is almost exclusively the interest of the literary types today -- how often do people buy books of poetry, save in anthology form? Yet, poetry thrives!

I invite you to consider your own poetical voice as something to be developed.
