Freddy's migration to Florida with other farm animals!
Mr. Bean's farm animals are very intelligent. They can read and some can write.A pig named Freddy gets the idea from a sparrow to migrate. He,a cow,a dog,a horse, two spiders, two ducks, and a cat all migrate to Florida for the Winter they have an exciting trip there and an exciting trip back to New York they meet the President and alligators and much, much, more. This book is full of adventure and humor.I recommend it to everyone. There are other Freddy books such as Freddy the Detactive,Freddy and the Bean Home News,Freddy and the Space Ship.

A wonderful tale of the adventures of Freddy the Pig.
The first of a series of books about Freddy. Tired of long, hard winters, the animals on the Bean Farm in upstate New York decide to go to Florida for the winter. The animals encounter burglars, outwit a group of hungry alligators, and discover buried treasure before returning to their home

The New York-Florida issue
How many New Yorkers years for the warmth of Florida during winter? Snow birds? Such are the yearnings of Freddy adn the other barn animals. They leave their farm and start on the trek just as many New Yorkers do down I-95.....but with less adventures.
it is wonderful to have the Freddy books being reprinted for in freddy and his friends we can all see ourselves. Besides, they are just plain fun.
PS. I could be moving to Florida.....

A turning point
"The Hand of Oberon", the fourth book of the first Amber series, is perhaps the most pivotal. Within, many of the mysteries we've followed since "Nine Princes" are finally resolved, setting us up for the big climax in "Courts of Chaos".

In addition to enough plot twists to make your head spin, it's also notable for Corwin's first real problem with Random - who finds that he might have very personal reason to take out a sibling who Corwin considers necessary for information purposes. The fact that by this book just the thought of a rift between them makes you squirm is proof of how important their relationship has been - not only because strategically Corwin needs someone to back him up but because, in a world where so much else has been suspect, we know they honestly like eachother.

I really really like the Amber series.
_The Hand of Oberon_ is my favorite of the books in the second half of the Amber Chronicles. And that's saying a lot.

Random's missing son Martin, Dworkin revisited, more about the mysterious Dara, and the disappearance of the Jewel of Judgement-- all these plot twists are dwarfed by the big one in Ganelon's suprise for Corwin...

LINCHPIN
THIS BOOK IS VITAL TO REALLY GETTING THE MOST OUT OF THE SERIES. I READ THIS SERIES YEARS AGO AND LIKED IT SO MUCH I JUST BOUGHT ALL THE BOOKS IN THE SERIES AGAIN. EXCELLANT

A Breeze
I enjoyed this book very much. The only problem I had with it was that the material discussed was simply too elementary. I recommend it if you are just beginning study of the philosophy of mathematics. Skip the introductary essay, it's irrelevant...

Fascinating but not good for the recreational reader
I read this over my winter break (2001) from my second year of medical school at UCSF. This is a fun book to try to grasp, but unless you are extremely mathematically gifted (like me) or have spent years plodding away studying philosophy or math, then stay away from this book. If you are a casual reader and want to read great and important philosophy then stick with Heidigger and Kierkegard and such. Being and Time is a lot more fun if you just want some easy reading. Godel is hard stuff and only accessible to a select few. I loved it.

Read the masters!
THE proof as Goedel wrote it (plus typos). I have seen modern proofs of this theorem which are much easier to follow (as an example, a Mir book on mathematical logic by a Russian mathematician whose name I cannot recall), but this one is the REAL thing.

Modern proofs can be much clearer, but the original always has an added value. The writing style is not the best, but by reading this version you get a clearer idea of how Goedel came up with his theorem and the many difficulties he faced. Remember, by the time most of us read or heard about this for the first time, mathematical logic had advanced quite a few decades.

Excellent advice for overworked people!
If you've got too many demands and not enough time, this book will help you conquor the chaos - it's the next best thing to having Mary Poppins move in. The authors give real advice on making the most of your time. Any of their suggestions can be incorporated into your life, no matter what your income level might be.

How to book on rebalancing your life
It's a problem almost everyone faces today, how do you balance work, home, pleasure, church, and other obligations so you are not completely overwhelmed? "Beyond Juggling: Rebalancing Your Busy Life" provides a realistic approach to getting your life under control.

The authors provide five alternatives to trying to juggle multiple commitments: Alternating, Outsourcing, Bundling, Techflexing and Simplifying. Each one of these alternatives is examined in detail with a description of what it is and is not, an aptitude test to determine if it is an appropriate option for you, and descriptions of the trade-offs for each option.

The last part of the book contains a self-assessment that helps you determine the strategy that you are currently using, the ones that best fit your personal style, what will work now with your present career and life-stage and what will be needed in your future as your needs and circumstances change.

This is simply the best book on balancing your life obligations that I have read to date. Immediately useful, highly practical, it is a highly recommended read for anyone seeking balance in life.

Best Book I've Read On Balance -- Hands Down
There are lots of books out there just waiting to organize your life and tell you what to do. Problem is, once you finish reading the book, it's impossible to put everything into practice. I really enjoyed Beyond Juggling because it went past that. It gave real, workable solutions to fit work and personal life. I work at a Fortune 500 company and find it difficult in the early part of my career to take the advice of most books. I can't "get off the treadmill" or work flextime until I've build up some organizational credibility. The great thing about the book was that I found solutions that worked for me. It wasn't preachy by telling me I should, of course, put family first. I know that already. Rather they listed great strategies that have really helped me to help balance everything that's important to me.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves work, and loves their life, but doesn't necessarily want the two to be one and the same!

Touchdown!
Rudolph the East German scores a touchdown on the zero yard line with this important expose of gnostics living and dead. While Hans Jonas tends to dwell on the myth of the pearl and the e-mail to soul trapped in Egypt, Rudolph crosses the line, and suffice it see his marshland journal of the Mandeans and the spread of the Manichees which reached the Pacific and installed gnosticism as a state relion in Uighurstan knows no equal. There are also pictures for the kids to color in.

...the Knower ...and the Known...
[from Boating on the Catawba...in the
"Musketaquid"]
"The hidden significance of these fables
which is sometimes thought to have been
detected, the ethics running parallel to
the poetry and the history, are not so
remarkable as the readiness with which they
may be made to express a variety of truths.
As if they were the skeletons of still older
and more universal truths than any whose
flesh and blood they are for the time made
to wear. *** But what signifies it? In the
mythus a superhuman intelligence uses the
unconscious thoughts and dreams of men as its
hieroglyphics to address men unborn. In the
history of the human mind, these glowing and
ruddy fables precede the noonday thoughts of
men, as Aurora [does]the sun's rays. The matutine
intellect of the poet, keeping in advance of the
glare of philosophy, always dwells in this
auroral atmosphere."
-- Henry David Thoreau; *A Week on the
Concord and Merrimack Rivers*.
* * * * * * * * *
This work by Kurt Rudolph is the most
clearly defined, cross-referenced, and
helpfully labeled (in the margins) guide to
understanding Gnosticism which I have so far
encountered.
His explanations and numerous excerpts
are concise and clear, as are his numerous
guides to other places in the text which
are also relevant. Rudolph also includes
an excellent discussion of the discovery
and significance of the Nag Hammadi Coptic
gnostic texts, including an excellent and
clear outline of the Codices and their
contents. The book also contains remarkable
photographs of the places of discovery as
well as of some individual pages. In other
parts of the book there are photographs and
drawings related to other expressions
of Gnostic experience.
To explain the concept and the understanding,
one might borrow this quote from Elaine Pagels
in her remarkable work, *The Gnostic Gospels*:

"As the gnostics use the term, we could
translate it as *insight,* for gnosis
involves *an intuitive process of knowing
oneself.* And to know oneself, they claimed,
is to know human nature and human destiny."
* * * * * * * * *
As Rudolph so well puts it:
"They were not aiming at any ideal philosophical
knowledge nor any knowledge of an intellectual
or theoretical kind, but a knowledge which had
at the same time -- a liberating and redeeming
effect. *** All gnostic teachings are in some
form a part of the redeeming knowledge -- which
gathers together -- the object of knowledge
(the divine nature), the means of knowledge (the
redeeming gnosis), and the knower himself. The
intellectual knowledge which is offered as
revealed wisdom -- has here a direct religious
significance, since it is at the same time
understood as otherworldly, and is the basis
for the process of redemption." * * *
"There was no gnostic canon of scripture, unless
it was the *holy scriptures* of other religions,
like the Bible -- or Homer [sic], which were
employed and interpreted for the purpose of
authorising the gnostics' own teachings. ***
The gnostics seem to have taken particular
delight in bringing their teachings to
expression in manifold ways, and they handled
their literary producitons with great skill.
*** ...everywhere one notes a masterful practice
of the method of extracting as much as possible
out of the thoughts and expressing it in ever
new ways. In this process, the interpretive
method of *allegory and symbolism,* widely
diffused in the ancient world, was freely
employed."
* * * * * * * * *
Excellent in many ways...

Very Good!
This is a comparatively easy read (if compared to someinsufferable history books I read in college), and it is also veryinformative. No new age [stuff] -- just scholarship and very goodanalysis. This survey is much better than Hans Jonas in that itincorporates Nag Hammadi findings, and is not as hostile. The selectbibliography at the end is a jewel ...

Give Jewgirl a whirl!
You won't be sorry if you buy this book. Kurt Meyer delivers an emotional and psychological gem. Meyer's expertise in psychology, classical music and Nazi Germany are beautifully intertwined within the story. Jewgirl is chalked full of such artful description and detail that you will feel like you are right beside the main character, Kitty, sharing in her thoughts, tragedies, and triumphs. I was on the edge of my seat wondering if the next page would bring Kitty the happiness that so long eluded her or if she would be done in by her tormentors. "They Called Her Jewgirl" is the best book I have read in years.

A tragic story written with grace!
Couldn't put the book down. It's a spellbinder. You'll want to finish it in one night. The life of tragedy one woman endured will leave you with an unforgettable image. An image that will stay with you long after you finish the book. A tragic story written with grace. Very powerful.

Hard to put down
This story will make any reader reflect upon what it means to have a "Good Life" and that sometime, a person's destiny has very little to with their actions. I could not put this book down because I wanted kitty to survive and heal. Her journey wasn't over until I completed the last page.

not a how-to-book
An interesting book. As mentioned in one of the previous reviews, if you are looking for a how-to book, this is not it. This book is more of an account of one person's experiences in the out of body, specifically, what one can expect when one passes over to the 'other side'. It is a little different from other books of the same genre because, again, it has the author's bias and interpretation. It has more symbolisms than some of the other books. Perhaps this make it more easy to understand what is going on. But for me, I felt that there were too much symbolism to make it believable. It is however an interesting book to read but for me it is not an essential book for my library collection. I would give this book 3 stars.

Best book on the afterlife this side of the Styx.
This is a wonderful introduction to the exploration of the afterlife through out of body travel. Leland uses a pragmatic, sensible model for understanding his experiences, which reduces fear and allows for a great range of differences in the perception of the other world. By sharing his experiences with us, Leland introduces us to a philosophy of living that enhances our compassion for ourselves and each other, making life more livable and death less fearsome. Highly recommended.

Fascinating Fiction!
If you are interested in dreams, lucid dreaming, or out-of-body experiences, you will probably enjoy this book! However, don't buy it if you are looking for a how-to book of OOBE's. It's not that at all. What it is, in my opinion, is a fictional account drawn from Mr. Leland's rich imagination. NO ONE can have such intricate and detailed recall of such long and involved conversations whether in or out of body! Also, it is quite obvious that Mr. Leland is having the characters in his "novel" function as the mouthpiece of his personal philosophy of life. In spite of all that, this book is extremely interesting and well-written. Surprisingly, it offers some insight into dream interpretation. Of course, it's not to hard to interpret a dream if you made it up in the first place! The book is fascinating fiction. I recommend it.

Rewarding, Thoughtful Read
A nice laid-back approach to a father-son memoir, offering interesting insights into the lives of Dads of sons - and the sons of Dads.

Shaving Lessons offers more descriptions of actual Dad-son activities and less of the author's thoughts and reflections on their meaning and importance for the relationship (but, then, this is a guy writing after all). After my initial surprise, I found that it makes for a easier, less imposing read - it allows the reader to draw his or her own conclusions, inferring the emotions evoked from the events described.

There's a nice, cozy, fireplace-in-a-log-cabin and well-worn-Volvo feel about the book, and while not all Dad's can be as accomplished as Mr. Chandler (playing rock-tunes with a live band to impress a teenage son), most of us can instantly relate to his down-to-earth struggle with a real, honest family life.

For any Son or Dad there is ample food for thought here - not just about male relationships, but about the whole notion of life as the parent of a boy, and as an adult son. Shaving Lessons might even lead some of us to reconsider our relationships with our fathers and/or sons...

Wow!
Thank you! What a tear jerker! It makes you think about your own relationship with your parents and gives you the opportunity to appreciate them even more. I admire Kurt for opening his heart and sharing his personal thoughts with the readers. That takes courage. Big Kuddos to Ben for letting his Dad write the book;-). Great Job!

Hooked from the beginning
Shaving Lessons had me hooked at the very first paragraph in the Prolouge....not to mention had me shedding tears. Kurt Chandler does a wonderful job describing his relationship with his son, as well as examining his relationship with his own father in an honest and sometimes difficult reflection.
