Godel's unpublished philosphy
For anyone interseted in Godel's thought, this book is absolutely wonderful. Also for anyone interested in Platonism and how one can be a platonist after the crisis in math, this is a good thing to read. Moveover, Godel was sort of a freek-job and didn't like to publish stuff about his personal philosphic views, so you won't get the real deal if you only read the stuff he published. Much like his homie Einstein, Godel spent the last chunk of his life plugging away at a unified theory, Einstein's was reletivity, Godel's was metaphysics. Really good stuff. Sure, you can read that Godel, Escher, Bach stuff, but then you are only learning what the man wants you to know. You gots ta get the real deal from the source. Word.

Collector's Guide to Victor Records
Published in Hardcover by Monarch Record Enterprises (1992)
Authors: Michael W. Sherman, William R. Moran, and Kurt R. Nauck
Amazon base price: $90.00
Used price: $150.00
Average review score:

Indispensable for the 78-rpm Collector!
This book is an absolute must for any record collector with an interest in Victor records. Though small in size, no space is wasted and no expense spared to give the Victor aficionado clear and precise photographs - many in color, to illustrate the various label types. This enables any collector, from the neophyte to the more knowledgeable, to place a reasonable issue date on the record he has in his hand - not merely when it was recorded.

Charts and graphs included provide, as accurately as currently possible, chronological placement of various records according to size, price class, and label type. The book places a large emphasis on the Red Seal (celebrity classical) label type, but the popular categories are not overlooked. The text is clear, concise, and quite readable, especially when one considers the huge amount of numerical information presented.

A most interesting feature is a central section featuring Victor's most "important" classical artists of the period, taking the opportunity to use tenor Enrico Caruso (arguably Victor's greatest-ever recording artist) as an example to show every label variety presented. Since his recordings have been readily available in virtually every recording format since 1902, this is a most appropriate example. A useful annotated bibliography concludes the book.

In conclusion, no serious collector of 78-rpm records should be without this book. It has already reached somewhat of a cult status and deserves it, and your purchase of this book will ensure that Sherman, Moran, and Nauck continue the excellent research they have done in the field of vintage recordings. If you don't buy it here, buy it somewhere!

Definitive Book on Color
I conduct research using color as a variable and have had a very difficult time finding accurate sources of information. This book is not only the most accurate book I've seen on color, it is the ONLY accurate book I've seen. It takes you through the basics of defining color as well as the science behind color.

Help for the Confessing
Although written to help priests be more effective and gentle, helpful confessors by gaining a deeper understanding of what their people are saying (or trying to say or hide )in confession this book can also help laity confused about the sacramment of reconciliation. It can show you clearer and more precise ways to express yourself, or how to ask your confessor for the kind of guidance this St. Meinrad's professor would have him offer. Confession is difficult for priests, Father Stasiak points out, because it is the only sacrament they can not watch others priests administer.

The Congressional Minyan: The Jews of Capitol Hill

Like a Toystore For Political Junkies
The Congressional Minyan is a fantastic book. It combines an insiders knowledge of Capitol Hill with a political junkie's love of people, places, campaigns and issues. Stone has accomplished a lot in writing this book. Besides the 179 people profiled, there are asides on everyone from Orson Welles and Edith Wharton to Charlie Chaplin and Sam Goldwyn. Stone has an encyclopedic knowledge of American history, Congress and the people who have helped make it. Highly recommended!

Constituting International Political Economy (International Political Economy Yearbook, Vol 10)
Published in Hardcover by Lynne Rienner Publishers (1997)
Authors: Kurt Burch and Robert A. Denemark
Amazon base price: $26.50
Average review score:

Denemark proves himself as a well-sung author
As a student in International Relations, I can easily admit that books about political economics are not always the most "action-packed". Actually, most are downright narcotic. However, Dr. Denemark succeeds in blowing the roof off of this traditional stereotype with his utterly intriguing text. Merely reading his words, the reader can almost hear the fecicious intonnations and quirky mannerisms which make Dr. Denemark a unique attribute to the realm of international studies. I suggest that anyone interested in politics or history read this informative, yet light-hearted text.

Constructing the Subject : Historical Origins of Psychological Research
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (1994)
Author: Kurt Danziger

Used price: $16.80

Great Scholarship
This text should be on the reading lists for history of psychology courses for years to come. Danziger explores the development of experimental research paradigms in psychology in a broad historical context. Danziger reveals the politics of psychological discourse by emphasizing the role of social context in determining how psychological knowledge claims become legitimate. Although I have a general aversion towards "social constructionism," I was utterly impressed by both the scholarship and authority of this book.

Currency Boards for Developing Countries: A Handbook (Sector Studies, No 9)

This Book Is Hot
This book is hot. It's an easy-to-read how-to guide for setting up your very own currency board. O.K., obviously most readers don't have that in mind, but the arch, wry tone of the book keeps it interesting and makes even the greenest beginner want to read further. Also, it's tightly written and short. I never knew there was so much to learn about currency boards - most newspapers, for instance, explain it out in one sentence, and there's really much more to them. The book also lays out every single argument against currency boards, and offers excellent well-reasoned counterarguments and solutions that really persuade. Many people think a currency board is a good idea, but also think there are problems that make it impossible in the monetary wastelands of the developing world. They WILL find irrefutable answers here, answers about about reserve levels, setting exchange rates, drafting constitutions, whether country size matters and how to head off potential corruption. It's so detailed it's kind of funky - it bossily tells you where you should get your money printed, for instance. I've never read anything on monetary policy so easy and entertaining. You read this and feel like you've got your very own fiefdom to take care of, and you've just read a terrific how-to book on money-repair. Recommended reading for busy central bank chiefs, finance ministers and IMF bureaucrats everywhere!
