Narnia for little people
Debra Maze did an excellent job at putting illustrations to these classics. Her artwork is gorgeous! She has done a wonderful job of keeping the story simple enough for a three to five year old to appreciate and love. In fact, I have happily read it over and over again to my children. All of Debra Maze's Narnia books are perfect for introducing or accompaning children to the world of Narnia.
These books make excellent gifts!

Rediscovering Narnia
Growing up I loved Narnia, and the wonderful picture books by Deborah Maze have enabled me to introduce Narnia to my 4 year old son who loves them. I tried reading the rest of the original outloud, but he is not ready for that level. This is a wonderful way to introduce children to Narnia. Our only problem is we want more. We would love to see the rest of the "Magicians Nephew" in this format and "The Vogage of the Dawn Treader" would provide wonderful illustrations!

My daughter loved it
In the first 24 hours since this book was purchased my daughter has insisted on having it read to her 7 times. No other book has had this affect. She wants to know what is holding up the next volume, and when is her dad going to get it for her.

My Grandma Wrote This Book
This is a really good book. I read it over and over again. My Grandma is Perla Fox, and the really cool part is, is that I have a page with my brother. The book is also dedicated to us. Look for the page: Ben and Rebecca are cleaning their room.......

I am very happy.

START STRETCHING THE IMAGINATION.....
This is a great book to start your child on the right road. I recommend this book for young children to get them started pretending and using their imagination. I really enjoy reading this book to my two-year-old daughter. All the "wooodles" with the different colors, swirling figures and designs keep her attention. We spend time going through this book her telling me what the figures are (sometimes they can be something different than what I see). She is expanding her mind with the help of the "wooodles". She is always asking what every thing is and this book is no exception.

Fun, imaginative, with amazing artwork. What a great idea!
This book is a great mix of cute rhymes, really cool artwork, and fun activities. My two daughters love it. My eight year old finds wooodles everywhere now, and my three year old likes to look at the pictures and listen to the rhymes. The activities are fun and I didn't have to go out and buy a thing in order to do them. It really opens their eyes to all of the possibilities in the world and stimulates them to use their imaginations in a new way. I would highly recommend this book.

You Know You're an Mk When...
Published in Spiral-bound by Watermelon World Publishing (01 February, 1997)
Authors: Andy Kerr and Deborah Kerr
Amazon base price: $5.00

Humourous, but not cheesy -- a rare find
Superb. You know those little books you pick up in the doctor's waiting room to pass the time? The ones with one funny witticism one each page, united by a general theme?

This is better. The theme is more directed, yet at the same time the content is less redundant. And they're actually funny, yet at the same time there's a serious side inherent in the topic. Even
if you don't know any MKs personally, you'll enjoy this one. A
great addition to any personal library.

Wide-ranging, accurate view of the MK (missionary kid) world
The first item: "1. You can't answer the question, "Where are you from?"

Wow! I read that first line, and was captured by this little book. I grew up in Zaire (now Congo, again...) and also spent time in several other countries along the way. My mother is an MK too. This book is 100% right on. I have always felt like a foreigner, no matter if I was in boarding school, back at the mission with my folks, or "home on furlough" to the States.

The book is serious, but also hilariously funny. I have indeed watched nature programs and thought about what that animal/insect tasted like, and marveled at the selection of coffees in the grocery store, laughed at the names of compact cars (because I knew what they really meant), spoken at churches even though I am not a pastor, been exhibited at Sunday School, and my home does look like a museum of African art. It took me years to remember not to cross my 7's, and to throw away empty jars and tins.

If you are an MK, please read this book. It will comfort you to know that your feelings of alienation and lonliness are shared with thousands of others - you really are not alone. It will also remind you of the fun times, whether you were a missionary kid in Africa, Asia, Central, or South America.

If you are trying to get to know an MK (a feat if you can accomplish it, since we don't usually let people too close), you should also read this book. It will give you some insight into their world, which is so different from the one you grew up in.

You know you've read a good book when...
Possibly the greatest set of words to ever be written down in this order. With the exception of the recipe for chocolate chip cookies, but that goes without saying.

Another worthy addition to the Darkover saga.
MZB chose well in making Deborah Ross heir to her rich Darkover literary legacy and DJR does her predecessor proud in this rich and engaging novel. How uncanny it seems when Ross develops her plots and characters using techniques of which MZB was unequivably the mistress! This and it's sister and prequel THE FALL OF NESKAYA add much to the vivid and always enchanting world. Reviewers elsewhere stated that while this would be eagerly embraced by Darkover fans, it would fail to attract new readers. Not so! Indeed, the quick-moving plot and lush details would serve well as an introduction to one of the most long-lived fantasy series. However, the proofreading and editing here lack miserably. Frankly, I expect better from DAW Books and, as a college English professor, was appalled at the mistakes even my weakest Freshman Comp students would catch in a moment.

Well written and informative
A wonderful book to "fill in the gaps" that leaves the fan of Darkover wanting more. This latest installment truly helps those who love Darkover with their un-answered questions related to the period known as "the hundred kingdoms." I can't wait until the next book. For those who are new to Darkover, I would imagine that this book would make you want to read all the other Darkover novels in order to understand the concepts of "matrix science" and culture. I would especially encourage you to read the books related to the "Ages of Chaos" and "Two to Conquer"

Wonderful storytelling
On the world of Darkover during the age of THE HUNDRED KINGDOMS, petty kings make the Towers (places where people with strong psychic powers gather) build laran (psychic) weapons that can be used without the combatants ever coming face the face. In the tower of Arilinn two young men strike up a friendship that will last them all their lives and change their world for the better.

Carolin Hastur, destined to become king, is sent to Arillinn tower to learn how to use and control his laran powers. Varzil Ridenow, whose family was former enemies of Hastur and now become wary allies, goes against his father's wishes to enter the Tower because he feels Darkover needs his powers as they are the strongest in the land. They share a dream of making The Towers independent of Kings and banning all distance weapons. That goal has a chance of being fulfilled if Aerlin and Carolin elude the evil sorcery of Eduin, whose father is the outlawed ex-keeper Rumail Deslucido. Carolin must also wrest the kingdom away from his cousin Rokhal who seized it when the old king died.

ZANDRU'S FORGE is a powerful sword and sorcery tale starring two heroes who share a dream and fight to make it a reality. Marion Zimmer Bradley and Deborah J. Ross have written a novel so fulfilling and satisfying that it is impossible to put down. There is plenty of action and the characters are fully developed, even the villains, making it easy to understand what motivates them. Fans of Darkover will not want to miss out on this work that adds more detail to the age of The Hundred Kingdoms.

Sushi for the Soul
Far from being a self-aggrandizing memoir, a travelogue or a spiritual manual, this book reads like a rich, delicious novel. Sandra Boliver Boehm writes with a sense of humor about her college-age self, and with meticulous and sensual detail about her experiences in Japan in the 1970's. Her descriptions of the food she ate are enough to make a reader crave sushi every night. This is a phenominal coming-of-age tale, and a must for any intelligent young woman with a lust for adventure.

I wanted to give it SIX!
Some of the most exquisite writing I've ever encountered. This delightful memoir is quizzical, poignant, sparkling, honest and brilliant. It conveys the feel of a youthful search for spiritual adventure while unconsciously brimming with maturity and a rare kind of courage, both earthy and lofty. I'm eager for more, much more, from this exceptionally witty, literate and lyrical voice.

A vivid recounting of a young American woman's time in Kyoto
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I have strong ambivalencies about the time I spent living in Japan, but reading this book evoked such strong, nostalgic images of all that is right and true about Japanese culture that I was ready to hop the next plane. I only wish that I had had her apparently excellent Japanese language skills, the more romantic locale of Kyoto over the more industrial Kobe where I lived, and the better luck with Japanese men!

The Algorithmic Beauty of Sea Shells (Virtual Laboratory)

Sea Shell Math
This book describes, using a computer, The geometry involved in the building of seashells and in particular the surface features. It shows the how and why of surface decorations found on several species of Mollusks. This is probably the only book to treat this subject and do so extensively expertly and comprahensively.

very thought provoking and visually stimulating
I came across this book at the Rhode Island School of Design library. As an artist I found it surprising that what I had considered to be just a beautiful pattern was actually an imprint of the pressure and movement of the waves upon the seashell. This insight was very thought provoking for me. Perhaps to biologists this is a normal and natural thing - but for an artist this kind of scientific approach with beautifully illustrated pages is a deeply moving experience. This book will definitely make you think twice about the objects that you take for granted - whether it's visually or scientifically. I strongly recommend this book for those who like intellectual challenges and who like to look at the world with fresh new eyes.

Modern Society versus Man
Deborah Cadbury has managed to convey an incredible amount of information in a useful, logical way. Pesticides, toxins, estrogens, and many chemicals used in every day products like food containers are tied to reproductive disorders like endometriosis, uterine cancer, testicular cancer, breast cancer, and infertility. I could not stop reading this book. Many of the points made are so obvious that I have often wondered who is hiding the information form society linking the source of toxins to the health effects. Why is it that government and industry value money over human life? I assume that most people are too ignorant or complacent to act to protect their health by not driving cars (or limiting use), eating organic foods, demanding more wildlife areas, conserving energy and using renewable sources instead of building more power plants, and being informed as to health risks and causes. The only thing I would have liked to see in this book is detailed resource information. Specifically, what companies use these chemicals, where they are known to be in the environment and at what levels, cancer rates by area, etc. - where do we go to get this information.

Altering Eden - Our Future at Risk
This is a very important book. It is based on an 'Emmy' award winning BBC TV programme. Scientists around the world are finding alarming changes in human reproduction and health. There is strong evidence that sperm counts have fallen dramatically. Testicular, prostate, and breast cancer are on the rise. Different animal species are even showing signs of 'feminization' or 'changing sex,' the males actually producing eggs like females. According to scientific evidence compiled worldwide, the prime suspect in these worrying findings is the increased exposure to chemicals that can mimic the female hormone estrogen and other hormones. Indeed, man-made chemicals like DDT, PCB and other hormone disrupters have become soaked into our environment from their use in countless modern products, from plastics to pesticides. Only now is the full impact of their extensive use coming to light. Believed responsible for genital abnormalities and cancers across a wide range of species, these hormone disrupting chemicals may pose a threat not only to our human potential, but to our very survival. Through extensive interviews with fertility experts and scientists world wide as well as members of the chemical industry, Deborah Cadbury provides a balanced, cogent, compelling argument that propels us toward a disturbing conclusion. In the spirit of Rachel Carson's groundbreaking work, Silent Spring, Cadbury's well researched, even handed analysis of these findings is a startling wake-up call to the far reaching consequences of widespread environmental pollution.
