This book is phenominal
This book is SUCH an easy read. It explains everything you'd need to know in plain english and gives many real life examples. I've just started to put what I've learned in the book into practice and I can't wait to see the results.
Two things would have made this a better book: 1) a tearout that can be used as a quick reference guide and 2) it really could use to be updated. It was written in 1986 and many organic and chemical products have been introduced since then that I would like to get his take on.

A fine book for anyone interested in a nice lawn
I was quite starved for information to help me repair drought damage to my front lawn as well as seed a new lawn from scratch in the backyard. I read the book from cover to cover quite quickly and I feel somewhat enlightened. The concepts put forth by Stuart et al for maintaining a healthy lawn are quite simple to understand and execute. Each aspect from choosing a grass type to how to effectively seed and then eventually maintain your lawn is covered in detail in its own chapter. One aspect of the book which I particularly enjoyed was the explanations of exactly what you need to do to cause problems in your yard. I think sometimes its just as important to be informed how to to screw up as it is to do things right. Sometimes people can accidently kill their lawns without the knowledge of exactly what they are doing wrong. The book covers the functions of different chemical approaches to lawn care, but maintains that natural care is the most cost effective and safest way to maintain a lawn in the long term. I was very impressed by the book, and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Natural Lawn Care, Presented 'Naturally'
This is the best book I have read on the topic. It is clearly written, and loaded with useful information. I recommend it as a great book for those who want to understand why their lawn looks so bad.

WELL WORTH ADDING TO YOUR READING LIST.
Will Manning Forbes get past his guilt of robbing a family of husband and father and having to watch the man he shot die?

Caddie Marsh has survived the war with at least her pride intact and now having left Richmond, she is returning her family to her husband's family plantation. Dang if Alonzo Marsh, her brother-in-law, wasn't trying to claim her son's inheritance. She hated to admit it but she was in need of a man's help.

Manning Forbes caused the shock of her life in looking so much like her dead husband. [Was he possibly an illegitamite offspring of her husband's father?? my question]

It pained Caddie to see the way her children took to Manning as he displayed tenderness and understanding yet kept withdrawing from her small overtures.

Caddie had to fight her hatred of the Yanks, as she did not want her children to live with bitterness and hatred. Neither Manning or her children would understand her bitterness against her husband - Well, she had her pride, didn't she? Was there room for love? Could she seduce her yankee "carpetbagger" husband into a real marriage?

Manning was more than willing if he could just get past his guilt. Would his proud "Confederate" widow forgive him or hate him when the truth came out?

This is one book you will love -- Highly Recommended - worth adding to your library.

Carpetbagger's Wife
I read a great deal. Not just romance, but everything that comes my way, and I often find it difficult to discover an author who delivers a well written, well-told story each and every time. Deborah Hale doesn't just come my way; I seek her books out. In Carpetbagger's Wife, Hale delivers in a big way. Her imagery is fresh and evocative, her characters a wonderful balance between heroic and down to earth, and her setting of post Civil War in Northern Virginia comes alive through Hale's attention to detail. I have ice and snow outside my window as I write this, but I swear I smelled flowering dogwood on an April breeze the minute I started reading Carpetbagger's Wife.

Another winner!
Just because RT didn't review this book, doesn't mean you should pass it up.
Caddie Marsh is a penniless widow of the Civil War, who gets some unexpected help from a mysterious Yankee stranger, who uncannily resembles her dead husband.
Manning Forbes may resemble her husband, but he's not without his own agenda.
Once again, Deborah Hale has created fascinating, turbulant characters a reader can really root for, really believe. If you only buy one historical this year, it should be this one.

Fascinating and Informative
Over the last few months, my interest in the sprit world has grown and I've tried to learn more and more about it. When I heard about this book, I realized that it would probably be an excellent one for me to read. I was right. The authors take the time to explain a lot of different "psychic-related" topics, but they do so in a straightforward way, and they do not go off on any type of "new age tangent." One thing they talk about is energy. The more books I read about the "spirit world," the more I realize energy is the basis for their and our human existence. The authors throughout the book use numerous different exercises to help the reader tune in to various psychic skills. In some ways, it's almost "interactive." Some of the exercises are meditations of one kind or another. I've come to realize that meditations and energy seem to go hand in hand in doing any type of "psychic work."

The book also contains numerous stories about spirit contact, as well as numerous drawings done by one of the authors of spirits on "the other side." I found these stories and drawings to be fascinating and for me further proof that spirits do indeed exist. It makes me wonder what spirits I have "behind the scenes" guiding my life.

I'm thankful a book like this is now available because it answered some questions for me about the spirit realm. The back of the book contains further resources, which is good because while this book answered many questions for me, it's provided me with further questions and the motivation to learn more.

If you can't meet with Rita Berkowitz......
I first met Rita Berkowitz in August of 2001 while on Cape Cod. I had a reading done on a lark and was floored when she immediately began telling me that my recently deceased mother-in-law had been trying to contact me or my husband. My mother-in-law passed information through Rita for me to tell my husband that explained many questions that had been left unanswered when she died. If the information hadn't been right on, which it was, her accurate drawing of my mother-in-law would have been enough to convince me. I've had two more readings with Rita since then and she's the real deal...no question about it. As soon as I heard Rita was writing a book, I placed an advance order for it and it just as good as I had hoped it would be. I am fortunate to be in a position to meet with Rita when our schedules overlap but for those who cannot, this book is the next best thing. Every reading Rita does is for healing purposes and the healing can be for the person having the reading done or the person who has died. In my case, it was a healing for my husband and I think also for my mother-in-law who died with a lot of anger and bitterness still in her. I believe Rita wrote the book to help other obtain this same kind of healing.

A nurturing look at communicating with the spirits
This book was very informative, but not dry or technical. The whole tone of the book was warm and friendly. It was like having a conversation with a friend rather than reading a manual. I found that this book complimented my views on death and the afterlife. I recommend this book highly to folks looking to broaden there horizons or improve their skills.

A Great Resource Full of Heartfelt Stories
This is a book I have been telling people about for the last couple months. As a writer of lesbian novels myself, I have been constantly surprised to discover how many women seem to be living double lives: wife and mother by day--secret, internet-accessing, coming-out lesbian by night. When women email me to confide and ask advice (which I feel inadequate at giving!), I refer them to this book knowing that the stories of the women in FROM WEDDED WIFE TO LESBIAN LIFE will give them hope and ideas.

Great editing work by Deb Abbott and Ellen Farmer, and kudos to Crossing Press for publishing this fine book.

In addition to this book, I would also recommend: LESBIAN EPIPHANIES: WOMEN COMING OUT IN LATER LIFE by Karol Jensen. For other more general true-life stories of women coming out, read anything edited by the wonderfully talented Lindsey Elder.

This is a great help....
I was leaving my husband and starting a relationship with a woman when I met Deb Abbott online about 5 years ago. She told me about her book and I ran out to buy it. I saw myself in so many of the stories, and found that I wasn't the only one going through my situation. That relationship ended badly after 4 years, and I am now with a woman that is in the same position I was. I am re-reading Deb's book, and my girlfriend is also reading it. It is a bible to us. I can't thank Deb enough for writing this amazing book.

A Guide for Unhappy Wives
This is a book for all women who feel that they are "stuck" in an unhappy marriage. The ladies in this book showed a lot of courage to put in to words what they felt from the very beginning of that first day of meeting a man to the first day with a women. This ladies tells us their heartfelt stories of unhappy marriages who some had children and some did not, some had families who was on their side and then there were other families that did not support them at all. This book could and would have been a bigger help to me 30 years ago and still is a help now. If your unhappy in a marriage with a man then read this book, it could help you to know that you can do things like these ladies did with your life with out a man there to make you unhappy and "keep you under their thumb".Some of these ladies went on to get thier degrees, and some went to work to support themselves with a job that they felt good with.If you do any thing get this book and get a "life"!

Great companion
Not intended as a reference or a tutorial for the C language, this book fills one niche well - the gory, often forgotten or differently understood, fine details. When writing code, and noticing some behaviour which doesn't look completely natural, this FAQ can often help clear some things out.
In my opinion it is also good to read it at least once from the beginning - this gives some good insight on the language that might not always be immediately visible to beginners, or intermediate programmers who do not have years of experience behind them.
Most every C compiler these days supports some extensions and non-standard features, and some of those might be difficult to notice as non-standard. This book will also help you program in a more portable manner, and think in more standardized C.

It covers the bases wonderfully!
This book would be a chapter shorter if C didn't have "++", "--", "**", etc. operators, but that's C's fault.

C Programming FAQs explains so many things I've scratched my head at, and shows how to do them properly, and most importantly, portably. Anyone interested in programming C NEEDS this book!

An essential addition to any C programmer's library.
This book gives answers to those annoying problems that always seem to come up in C programming, and which are either not mentioned in the standard texts, or are explained in Standard legalese which is not always comprehensible to the average reader. Both beginning C programmers and seasoned experts will benefit greatly from this book.

It is also arguably the most thouroghly peer-reviewed technical book ever written.

How to groom your pet
Great tips on pet grooming.I think I want to have a career switch, and this book is helping me decide to head towards animal care. Thanks!

Purr-fect
I stumbled across this book in a library, right after needing to take my cat to the vet. I had a bad experience at my vet, and wanted to learn more about the field, and this helped me enormously. I feel armed with valuable information after reading this helpful guide. A must-have for any pet owner! Meow!

Top Dog
Aside from the fact that this is a voluminous source of information for pet care, I have found that the approach the author has taken is both informative and personal. This is a must read for new and veteran pet owners alike!

The Hellstrom Chronicles meets Watership Down
There will come a day when Mankind (the Duo Pods) is extinct and the insects have inherited the Earth. The Earth Mother has allowed the Duo Pods' chemical wastes to change the ants and roaches into self-aware beings with unique and viable cultures. Plastics mined from ancient waste disposal sites are essential food supplements for the proper growth and development of these sentient insects. Vying for access and ownership of the plastic mines has created decades of intense animosity, exacerbated by occasional military actions between the ant and roach nations.

This book chronicles four generations of dairier ants and two generations of adopted roaches, who reach out to the roach community to end the hostilities. The ants strive to create common ground in mining, construction, trade and law. Among the roaches, there are those who savor their privileges and will go to any lengths - even murder - to maintain the status quo. If the ants fail, both species will pass away, just as the Duo Pods did.

I had trouble starting this book, because I'm a cat person, not a roach person. However, by the time I got to Chapter 11, I was cruising. Looking back, I think I'll miss Anthony. It takes a very special ant to adopt a roach, because his mate can't have any children of her own. I thought of this book as "The Hellstrom Chronicles" meets _Watership Down_ and I hope you enjoy it too.

A Fantasy for all
Deborah Frontiera has written a book that will appeal to both adults and children. While it is a story of two waring insect factions, it could as well be a tale of human frailties and emotions. A delight to read; it is easy to lose yourself in this make believe world.

Awesome Illustrations
I haven't had a chance to read the book, but based on the cover illustrations, I suspect it will be great. I'm not sure I've ever seen this illustrator before in print, but I look foward to seeing more of his work. If anyone knows the illustrator's name, could you please email me? good work, christin

Engaging personal finance tome
Everyone knows that couples fight about money but it's still hard to stop. Ms. Knuckey offers strategies to manage the "family" finances without coming to blows. Her advice is sound and understandable. I recommend this book to new couples and those who have been together for a while.

fun and informative!
This is an excellent book full of sensible and relevent advice. It is easy to read and well-written. I highly recommend it.

Required Reading for
One of the most meaningful books on finance I've ever read. Deborah Knuckey puts complex financial concepts within easy reach of readers of all backgrounds, while keeping the subject matter lively with real-world examples, humorous asides and just plain good advice. I wish I had read this book ten years ago!

Like many people, I have found that while my personal finance was in check, I have had trouble "sharing" money in a relationship. Agreeing how money is to be spent and how it should be handled is one of the most common sources of friction between couples. This book addresses the very real challenge facing people when deciding to share not only their lives, but their money.

Ms. Knuckey clearly explains how people's view on money differs according to their background, education and personalities. Without preaching specific financial advice, her book outlines the most common problems that couples face when handling money together, and some suggested ways in which to mediate, compromise and agree upon mutually beneficial financial strategies.

Buy this book for the new couple in your life. They'll thank you for it later!

The Cross by Day, Mezuzzah by Night
Published in Hardcover by Jewish Publication Society (1999)
Author: Deborah Spector Siegel
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $13.95

Great Idea, but mistakes
As a descendant of Conversos, and researcher of their history, I am REALLY glad to see a young adult book of this kind. However, I was very unhappy to see mistakes. They are minor, and I hope that a second edition will be better edited. For example, the mother, at one point, says, "Uno momento." This is horrible Spanish and only non-speakers would say this. The correct way is, "UN momento." Still, I'm glad that the subject is being written by and for non-scholars. Isabel/Ruth's experiences are true to the time she lived in, and this period in history is widely ignored by many. Secret Jews (Anusim) and their descendants deserve more attention!

Rolling Meadows, IL
This is touching story of a family courageously dealing with cultural and religious genocide. There is, perhaps, no better way to fight intolerance than to journey with a victin, fictional or otherwise, through the nightmare of persecution. This story needs to be told. As a Catholic, I welcome the opportunity to come to terms with a dark time in our past when Christ's message of love was unrecognizable in Christianity. We don't have to look far to see parallels in the ethnic cleansing taking place today, to realize vigilance is necessary if history is not to repeat itself. I would very much recommend this book and hope it will be read by Christian and Islamic, as well as Jewish, young people.

The Cross by Day, the Mezzuzah by Night
This is an excellent book for both adults and mature junior high and high school age. The information was obviously researched well as I am of this heritage and have read much on the subject. Isabel is a believable young woman who has to grow up way too soon in the face of the Spanish Inquisition. I found the story to be both exciting and educational. Many of the situations Isabel finds herself in are well documented as fact. Parents should read this book first before giving it to their children because the information may be difficult to digest. Treat it as you would a Shoah (Holocaust) book.
