Making Sense of College Grades (Jossey-Bass Higher Education Series)
Published in Hardcover by Jossey-Bass (1986)
Authors: Ohmer Milton, Howard R. Pollio, and James A. Eison
Amazon base price: $32.95

Why you should read this book
Have you ever been graded by a college professor? Are you a college professor? If the answer to either question is yes, you should read this book.

It details the results of a national survey on student's, professor's, parent's and business recruiter's attitudes about grades. Among the results, college faculty think that the difference between a "C" student and an "A" student is apparent in what that person knows and can do for 2-5 years or more. Other people thought it was much less.

The authors describe how grades depend on the context. Everyone seems to know this except the people who assign grades. You have probably experienced classes where you were thankful to get a C and other classes where an A was of no consequence. Unfortunately, reliance on GPA to sum up a person's college education does not take into account this context effect.

Another focus of the book is the discussion of the differences between learning oriented students and grade oriented students. The authors conclude that grade oriented students are using grades as a benchmark of their own value and performance. See how the structure and organization of a classroom can promote grade orientation or learning orientation.

Find out which college pollicies promote grade inflation and how grade inflation is a non-issue to everyone but college faculty.

In the end, the authors make 2 provocative proposals that would produce a wonderful transformation in the college experience of everyone and promote learning in college classrooms.

Outstanding book about the Civil War
A Man Called Shiloh is action packed. Reading this exciting novel about the Civil War and the years immedately following the war has enriched my knowledge of prevailing conditions during and after the war. Returning home from war to a defeated nation has never been easy. It was easy to feel the frustration and pain experienced by the returning Confederate Officer. The locations and battles are historically correct. I have read "A Man Called Shiloh" several times. I highly recommend this book.

A Black Star
This book was absolutely fabulous. It tells you many troubles black people went through in the 1960's. I learned so much about how hard Martin's life was and all the ups and downs he went through just for what he believed in. I thought he was the best leader ever. I don't want to tell you too much because you should read it for yourself.

Well written story of great inspiration
I read this book 2 years ago while getting my teaching credential. I have since put the book in my 4th/5th classroom library, yet it is never there. My students read this story of a hard working single mother and educator constantly. They know that Mary McLeod is one of my heros and they want to read why. I teach in school with little ethnic diversity, and Mary McLeod's story of learning and teaching and fighting for equality has been eye opening. None of my parents or students had heard of Mary McLeod before this year, but this wonderful book of her life has been a huge inspirational hit with the 9 and 10 year olds I teach and their parents.

A masterful study of how the novel ideas of Milton's time inform his vocabulary and thought. Rogers is especially attentive to the differences between our notions of "science" and those of the early Enlightenment. Essential.

One of My Favorites
This book is just as the title indicates, one of my favorites. I absolutely love the village type look of the countries in the Mediterranean coast. Since I've travelled throughout various of these places, I've become addicted to their beauty, both natural and manmade. This book, on Vernacular Architecture is something for me to hold on to, when I think of such lovely places, with their tiny passageways, whitewashed walls, and the ocean down below. I first discovered this book in the library, and must have checked it out over a dozen times... Now, I own it, and can't resist looking at it, at least once a day.
